In my mind, geometry was only a question of math with a specific answer before it was connected with architecture. However, geometry becomes an issue of space after I began studying architecture. Abstract points and lines are turned into physical forms which are used to create space. Although the answer is no longer fixed, the logic of geometry is still a clue leading to the result. My focus also switches from the shape to the inherent logic in geometry. ……

The materiality, orderliness, and scalelessness of geometry are logics of geometry, and also the logics of architecture. In my point of view, geometry is a way to understand architecture and design buildings. It is also a logical way of thinking. In this portfolio, five of my previous projects are shown. And they all have some kind of relationship with Geometry.

GENERATION We started our design from a basic chair that is combined with several repeated robs. Through several changes, it became a more comfortable and powerful design. Horizontal Radian

CONCEPT In Duchamp’s famous drawing, he used a series of abstract lines to illustrate a nude woman descending a staircase. There is no specific body, but a trajectory of movement. All the lines are strict ordered. How it looks, it’s discontinued. How it works, it’s continued.

GEOMETRY

GEOMETRY RULE

All the rob-shaped components in this design are strictly confined by multiple levels of control lines. The first level is to define the basic shape of a chair that is comfortable to sit, the control lines themselves are arc-shaped for geometrical purity. The second level is controlled by the first level, it defines the radian of robs. This level ensures the extent of the gradual change. The two levels of control lines are the logic behind the form of this chair.

CONSTRUCTION To ensure the components are well combined and able to swivel. We designed the construction basing on the physical structure. This construction consists of several different metal components. Some are for controlling the interval, some are for connecting to the wood robs, and some are for fastening.

MAKING PROCESS We made a real chair at last. All the wood robs were made by CNC machine, and metal components were made by machine tools. All the components can be assembled easily, which was benefited by our well-designed construction.

RESEARCH PROJECT

SUBSTANTIALIZATION

This project is designed by Felix Candela. Behind this beautiful form, the hyperboloid structure is what makes the difference.

The geometric logic behind this hyperboloid structure is lines that rotated in space. Batten that has a width can not objectivize geometrical line, so I twisted it to follow the trajectory.

FORM GENERATION

FORCE ANALYSIS The hyperboloid structure only has axial force, which makes it extremely thin. The combination of several hyperboloid can interact to support lateral force.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS The construction started at finding locating point and making support frame. Then, the turned battens were fixed step-by-step.

GEOMETRY - L Geometry - L is an abstract swerve. It can be divided into four different prototypes of combinations of passages and rooms. Each of the prototypes has different way of showing views.

ARGUMENT

A museum should not only be a container of exhibits with perfect function, it can be a master exhibit of its theme. As a museum of local culture, the architecture of the museum should demonstrate the spirit of traditional architecture. I chose classical south china garden as the representative, because of its unique space experience. Then I started to research one of it, names KE Garden.

Straightforward way

ANALYSIS OF KE GARDEN The biggest difference of a classical garden space, compared to a normal garden, is the way of showing views. The beautiful views are not shown in a simple straightforward way, but a meandering road with a lot of corners, and views always hide behind the corners. A series of swerves gives people an infinite number of fabulous feelings, so I want to design this museum base on this abstract corner.

Geometry-L has infinite possibilities as it grows. And there will be even more varieties, when they are divided to rooms and passages.

As the L-form grows, different transformations of the volume can enhance the variety of space.

PROTOTYPE SUBTRACTION As the Geometry-L grows, it has various combinations of passages and rooms. There will be special effects, when different rooms be removed.

GENERATIVE PROCESS This project is developed from the basic L-form. As it grows, gardens are enclosed. After transformation, dividing rooms & passages and subtraction, the final plan is created.

INFINITE IN MIND By carrying out the Geometry-L and adding different transformations, the final building shows an organic combination of passages, rooms and gardens. Both exhibition rooms and gardens are in various size, and the road connects them in a well-regulated way. People can enjoy the exhibits inside the exhibition rooms, and outside the rooms there is a fabulous space which is highly related to classical south china garden. Every turn gives people new views, so the place seems like an infinite space. People will get lost in mind but never in physical.

VARIATION ON COMBINATION

SKYLIGHT

In the N-S direction, five successive sections show the variation of the combination between rooms, gardens and passages. With the combination of the three items always changing, a series of space experience have been created.

This component can keep off all the direct sun light of any angle, and transform direct sun light to soft diffused light.

Beside watching beautiful views, people also have different ways of looking each other or viewing the place you have been. This enhance the fabulous feeling, people would not have a clear cognitive map in their mind, and that is exactly the feeling of visiting a traditional Chinese garden.

The time that my journey takes is long and the way of it long. I came out on the chariot of the first gleam of light, and pursued my voyage through the wildernesses of worlds leaving my track on many a star and planet. It is the most distant course that comes nearest to thyself, and that training is the most intricate which leads to the utter simplicity of a tune.

COMBINATION IN TWO SCALE

PROTOTYPE ANALYSIS

Putting the furniture into the architecture can dramatically change spaces inside and outside. Different arrangements of the furniture lead spaces of the architecture to various situation. That is not only the change of indoor space, but also different connections between indoor and outdoor. The situations of arrangement have infinite possibilities. Its flexibility makes it very convenient to transform usage scenario.

COMBINATION IN SINGLE SCALE In the chair level, units of the prototype can be combined in various ways. And infinite possibilities can be created. People can flexibly use the chairs in different situations.

CLASS BUILDING ANALYSIS The single class building of this kindergarten is generated from the original prototype, the first floor is classroom and the second floor is the bedroom. It also has three different outdoor activity spaces which are in three different altitude. This building is built by a concrete frame structure. The walls are composed with precast plates, thermal insulation and decoration integrated plates.

CONCEPT

PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT

This project is based on the rural architecture problem in china. In the ancient stage, Chinese village had strong identities and peaceful lifestyles. Everything was controlled by traditional rule. Nowadays, both Chinese cities and villages have changed a lot, the old rule does not work anymore and the new order has not been completely formed. In architecture aspect, traditional form of dwellings can not perfectly fit modern life. But the new form of dwellings is built in an unordered way, and the classic rural views, of which we are proud, have disappeared in this 20 years. In this project, we designed a dwelling for people in rural place to solve some of the problem that has relationship with architecture and life.

The updated version continues traditional space experience. More over, it has more possibilities for modern life.

CHANGE OF DWELLING Chinese classic dwelling form has been developed for thousands of years, which make it perfectly fit the traditional lifestyle. The views and space have strong identity.

With the development of modern building technology, people tend to choose easy and cheap ways to build their dwellings. Because of lacking design, modern village become a new but chaos situation. Second Level Interaction

USAGE VARIATION Because of the cross-shape garden, this house has a flexible function. It is able to meet the various requirements for different family, which is more convenient for usage and also enhances the identity of a house.

FINAL PROFORMANCE This building has the feeling of classical Chinese architecture, which makes it easy to be accepted by people in the countryside. Also, it has flexible part, which can show the identity of different families.

PASSIVE SOLAR TECHNOLOGY Summer Situation When summer comes, people can remove the glass of the solar house and let wind in. With the water and chimney, wind can be cooler and faster. The sunshade and loft resist some sunshine and heat.

Winter Situation When winter comes, people can install the glass of the central garden and make it work as solar house. The sunshades are removed for more sunshine. The loft and stair case can be heat insulation case for inside space.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE & CONSTRUCTION This house is made of bamboo which is amply grew in the target area and reliable as structure material. Also, bamboo can grow rapidly, which makes it very environmental friendly. Bamboo can be processed to be plate and rod, so it can be used everywhere in the house, from structure to decoration. Moreover, the original bamboo is also perfect to make furniture or tool.

CONSTRUCTION DETAIL

STRUCTURE & LAYERS This house uses the structure system of wood grid bearing wall. And the wood is bamboo plywood. It is designed and built by modular, which makes it able to be prefabricated in factory and built quickly.

HVAC SYSTEM Facilities in this house is actually flexible. People can add of subtract facilities depend on their economic condition.
