In this day and age everyone seems to be trying to cut corners and save money. One way to save money is to take a few simple steps to lower your electricity bill by making your home more energy efficient. If you're like me and cannot afford to run out and buy a wind and/or solar system for your home you can start small with these few tips. We purchased an older home and after getting our electric bill during our first winter, we decided we needed to do something to lower our outrageous electricity usage. We didn't have a lot money to start so we started small and easy. Here are a few first steps that you can try to make your home more energy efficient. 1. Seal the cracks - Go around and seal all windows and doors by using caulk and weather stripping. Make sure there are no broken windows and that you don't feel a draft anywhere. Also, make sure if you have a fireplace that you close the flue when it's not in use. 2. Control the temperature - Get a thermostat that you can pre-set the temperature to change automatically. For example, while you are gone to work you can set it warmer (or cooler depending on the season) than when you are home. Also, using ceiling fans will help circulate the air and keep your air conditioner from working so hard. You'll also feel cooler and not feel the need to turn the a/c down as much as you would without the fan. 3. Install Insulation - Check your attic and make sure that you have enough insulation. This can make a huge impact on the temperature of your home if do not have enough insulation. For example, in the summer if your attic is extremely hot, it makes it more difficult to keep your main house cool. A good option is green fiber insulation that is made from recycled products. Not only will you not get that itchy feeling installing it that you get from fiberglass, you'll also be making your home more environmentally friendly! If you will try these few energy saving tips I believe you will be happy with the results you will see on your future electricity bills. The key is to take it one step at a time and before you know it you will have a green, more energy efficient home!
