N OVEMEBER 2012 I SSUE Social Assistance Coordinator Report

Hello everyone in Xatsull and Cmetem! It’s been great to be back working for the Band. My new position as Social Assistance Coordinator is an exciting new adventure for me. I love it. Getting to see everyone at least a couple times a month has been awesome. I have been learning the Policy and Procedures for the SA. I see why Bonnie loved this job. It’s a little bit of everything, bookkeeping, visiting with people, interacting with different business and busy (which I love). I have been updating each of Soda Creek Chief 1901 @ Rancherie the files and work alongside Housing, Education, and Health, so we can find ways of assisting everyone and keep our programs running like a well oiled machine. So, please be patient as I learn more and more about SA. At a meeting earlier on, we found out about BCAMTA (BC Aboriginal Mine Training Association) which is an organization which does preliminary assessments for people to see where they are at, whether its upgrading, getting your licence or Grade 10 or 12, plus training in an area that you would like to work in. The mines have hundreds of positions so go check them out. They will assist you in finding funding for a program, money for travel, and shelter while taking training. Call Sheila or Cici @ 250-3928102 or email: sbooth@bcamta.ca or csterritt@bcampta.ca. The mines are always looking for workers and are in support of BCAMTA, which has a 95% employment success rate – which means it’s almost guaranteed you will be hired! Anyone applying for assistance can come in and fill out the forms in the office with me or take them home. They will need to be DATE STAMP’d at the front office, so I know when you applied. This is for Retro-pay to that date. Also, I would need a recent Bank Statement (the bank can do that for you-upon your request). Two picture ID’s and one without. The Release Forms for EI and Ministry, and any recent bills like Hydro, Telus (basic only), and we will discuss Propane and Wood. Once I have received these items we wait for a response from EI and Ministry. Also, when applying there is wait period of up to 30 days for receipt of assistance. It helps me, keep you up to date on your bills - if I get them each month before they are due or as soon as they are mailed to you, then that way they do not fall behind in payments or you get charged for late payments. Please, keep me informed of your employment status or if the # in your household changes. This also helps me give you the best options for your Social Assistance income. By working together we hopefully won’t have any misunderstandings and I look forward to seeing each of you. Yours in Wellness, Andrea Gilbert.

N OVEMEBER 2012 I SSUE Community Health Rep. Report

Happy November 2013 Everyone The Health Station Team has had some busy months recently. There have been a lot of trainings being attended to be able to share skills, educate and learn with the community in the next coming year. We are hoping to have some new workshops for community to generate some positive growth and strength for the people of Soda and Deep Creek. Some of these trainings have been Community Health Representative (Gina) and the Family Support Worker (Sandra) participated in a Family Support Worker Training, and a Core Addictions Participants workshop. The CHR then attended further training in the Core Addictions Practice by taking the Facilitators Training. The CHR also just completed Pediatric First Aid and attended a Purple Crying Period workshop. Sandra and the Support Counselor (Molly) are attending the Family Violence Training last week. Huge Thanks goes out to those who organized, and executed such a wonderful Halloween experience for the community. You know who you are! It was a great turnout for this event. Sandra’s Family Supports Program hosted the Possession and Acquisitions Licensing Workshop and we are proud to say “Thank You” to Sandra for all her hard work and a “Big Thank You” to the community for making it one of the most successful attended events of the year. Molly recently held a Protective Factors Workshop (part two). It was very informative and gave the parents who attended a chance to share common values, wants and needs for raising our children. Also a wonderfully prepared lunch had been offered and well received for those who attended. The Head Start Program facilitator Alicia, has been working with Sandra, Head start members and two elders; Minnie Phillips and Celica Derose, to practice their singing and drumming for an upcoming presentation at the Wildwood school November 29th 2012. Hope to see you all there. The Health Station Team has also developed a fridge friendly calendar to notify and remind community of the upcoming health events, and regular service schedule. Along with this new development the CHR is also working closely with Band Administrator, Chief Bev and Three Corners Staff to develop an Adult Day Programming for Soda Creek and Deep Creek members and we should have some news soon. CHR has modified hours of the Medical travel guidelines for the winter roads season. The full new hour changes guidelines have also been added to the newsletter. The changes are asking that those who are utilizing the service to please make appointments with the knowledge that the Health Van be leaving town by no later than 3pm. This will allow time to have everyone home safely, while driving the winter highways and roads. The Dentist will also be in the community November 26th from 9am to 4pm and on November 27th from 10am to 6pm. Please call the Health Station to make an appointment. Don’t forget we give a great dental package with each visit.
