WHEN VIVIENNE TALKS WE SHOULD LISTEN by LOUISE WHITE Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood DBE born 8th April 1941 is a British fashion designer and businesswoman, largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream creative industry. Westwood is a designer who often let’s her clothes speak for themselves, as independent designs and as her own statements of culture. She came in to public notice when she made clothes for Malcolm McLaren’s boutique in the King’s Road, which became famous as “SEX She was deeply inspired by the shock-value of punk and wanted to do the same through her creations. She went on to open four shops in London; eventually expanding throughout the United Kingdom and the world, selling an increasingly varied range of merchandise some of it linked to her many political causes. She’s a fear less 74 year old an English acentric, but extrodanery with her first language being clothes and an owner of a multi billion pound fashion business you can see why Vivienne Westwood is respected by the world industry. She dabbled in both men’s and women’s design, specifically in uniforms, which combined her forties dressmaking with touches of Savile Row These pieces were more functional designs of Westwood, as they were primarily for work, but still contained her flair as a designer. She has designed for some of the post powerful and iconic women, such as Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Adams, Minika Kelly and Lana Del Ray. . As-well-as Westwood designing we have seen her in the lime light

for campaigning against industrial farming, restrictive gender norms and Scottish Independence using the runway as a platform to voice her outspoken views on politics. As she fights to maintain her brand’s integrity, her principles, and her legacy we now see a documentary film that takes you through Westwood’s early life with Malcolm McLaren, who made their fashion store sex punk headquarters. In the film Westwood is very reluctant to speak about her personal life, this could be because of her biography, which was launched later this year, which she talks about family life, perhaps aware of the controversy? A favorite classic of mine is the Green Label where Westwood made a similarly powerful statement for men in her AW15 menswear show, where models with severely bruised faces channeled eco-warriors on a mission to save the planet (in a nod to the efforts of Prince Charles. Earlier this year, it was reported that Westwood was donating £300,000 to the Green Party The best part that really caught me is how Westwood pushes the boundary’s like no other designer, using icons with the industry to get them working with her as a community to tell a message through fashion creation – she clearly makes the world a better place. Towards the end of this documentary, Vivienne Westwood’s son Joe Corré describes her as Britain’s last genuine punk I couldn’t agree more. There is truth in that. Punk may have effectively vanished in music, but it lives on in Westwood’s clothes, style and the poses she strikes publicly.

The Association of photographer (AOP) will be celebrating their 50year anniversary with an exclusive exhibition held at Lobby of One Canary Wharf Square. Invited to the show preview, I was quite excited on entering the exhibit it was quite compelling, as the images are of the larger scale and there is mixed emotions I remember thinking that each image tells its own story, very powerful, you see yourself stood there starring for a little while trying to get the juxtaposition. The Pregnant Man Poster’ By Alan Brooking is the most exceptional image that really stood out among the most, the diversity and how very different from today, when the very concept would be casually dismissed at birth – it’s looking at reverse psychology. Alan, this picture was all about restraint—no place for funky lighting tricks. The identity shows that males also have that femininity side, his hand placed delicately on to the bump the look in his eyes expresses to me that he’s insecure and isn’t sure about what’s to come – he does make one proud mum through!!! The eyes that are looking into the future tells me that he is unsure what’s about to happen and has a few personal issues. There is no flash lighting; this off-guard moment captures some kind of poignancy and sadness reflecting, possibly, his state of mind. The member’s work of the AOP is published worldwide in magazines, newspapers, books and advertising campaigns. Many works are produced as fine art, sold and collected through traditional galleries and online. The Association brings professional photographers together and provides a sense of community that is simply unavailable anywhere else. We promote the highest levels of achievement. The exhibition will be open until the Friday 1st June 2018.

TRUST ME - KEEP YOUR KNEES BENT! I love brands that ooze quality and above all offer style, and Bomber Ski is one of those companies. For those of you who like to ski and what to look good while on the slopes, you will be pleased to know that all the Skis offered by Bomber ski are made in Italy.

Bomber team are lead by Bode Miller who is an accomplished golfer, snowboarder and of course skiing too. Bode has won over six Olympic medals (which is more than any other American Skier). With this much pedigree, he is the perfect Brand Ambassador for the company. He wasn’t the only one who was impressed by the skis, the five-time World Champion Ski Racing legend Marc Girardelli also was blown away with the quality and performance of the skis. Marc even reached out to one of the company owners Robert Siegal and said “the skis were so special he wanted to represent Bomber” says Robert, “and recognizing the power that comes with a world-class endorsement, we signed him to a multiyear contract as our global ambassador. Our designs really are that good, and it’s because we are uncompromising in our mission to create the world’s best skis.” And Bode had this to add, “For the first time I had found a ski company that enabled every skier to experience the quality that is normally reserved for the best in the world. I am excited to be part of bringing this level of quality to skiers of all levels, as it vastly enhances the ski experience.” Robert’s experience with Bomber similarly resulted from using Bomber’s skis. But though he was impressed by the quality, he was reluctant to make an investment, “as the industry has commoditised skis,” states Robert. “The industry has trained consumers to think of skis as products for which they should bargain and that are not of value. The same people that spend over $100,000 on a brief trip to leading European luxury resorts would never think of doing so for their equipment because there is not significant enough distinction between the brands.” Robert’s view changed in 2013 when he had the revelation that the consumer that desires optimal ski equipment was underserved and Bomber Skis so enhanced the ski experience that, together with his long-time business partner they decided to combine

their shared interests of luxury brands and skiing. “I was reading Steve Jobs’ biography, and a light bulb switched on in my head,” says Robert. “The iPhone was created because mobile phones were unattractive, utilitarian commodities. Likewise, skis were seen as the cheapest aspect of the ski experience that have historically been unattractive and not of the quality that modern man is capable of producing. We recognized that many skiers would appreciate the opportunity to experience the same quality ski that is normally reserved only for a limited selection of the world’s most elite skiers, designed specifically for recreational skiers of all levels, adding, you don’t need to be a race driver to appreciate driving a Ferrari.” What about their skis? One of the first skis to look at are the Bomber Pro Carve. Pro Carve was designed to offer stability, but high performance for the skier who’s passion is carving the ultimate turn. Bode Miller led this project from the front and spent 2016 working on the design with the production team in Cossato, Italy, where Bomber owns its own factory. They spend the time testing, refining to produce the best possible carve skis.

“The Pro Carve’s design is a culmination of my concepts of the ideal high-performance recreational ski which I have contemplated for years,” said Miller. “The quality speaks for itself the moment you carve your first turn, and the dual radius and traditional camber design combine to produce incredible edge-to-edge responsiveness and high-speed stability. Working with Bomber’s team of artisan craftsmen to transform my concepts into reality has been the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. While I am also working with them on the design and construction of my World Cup Race Skis, the Bomber Pro Carve is specifically designed for the recreational skier.” The second pair of skis that Bomber offer is the Pro Terrain, which is for those of you who want to ski on softer snow. These skis are engineered for high speed and quick turning but at the same time keep you on top of the snow. The third pair is the Gunpowder which delivers smooth flotation and stable all-mountain performance.

WHERE CAN WE GO TO MY LOVELY? There is a vast demand for experienced-based holidays; the rich are increasingly looking for exceptional locations and itineraries that are unique and where memories will last a lifetime. Hawk Yachts has put together various commercial investment propositions that capture this market and produce numerous superyacht experiences for an ever-increasing demand. Many of these experiences are only accessible by sea, and only in relatively small superyachts. There are 33m HNWIs and 226,450 UHNWIs, 4 million individuals have assets of between $5m and $50m, and according to Wealth X 2017 report, the number of UHNWIs will increase by 72,000 by 2021. The desire to ostentatiously display wealth is becoming less appropriate, especially for the younger wealthy. Buying high-value items such as jewellery, perfume, watches, fashion and cars will continue. But the younger rich are increasingly substituting the purchase of large wasteful fixed assets such as yachts, houses, jets and helicopters with rentals and charter. They do not want

As one Family Office said just week, “People don’t buy anymore”. The substitute, the new boast if you like, is gaining unique, extraordinary experiences, experiences that are remembered for life. The travel market at the high-end is increasingly benefiting from this trend. Suites in amazing hotels are sold well in advance, the top end safari lodges are operating at high capacity levels, private jet experience tours are sold out. But what of experiences only reached by the sea? Well, there is certainly no shortage of luxury cruise ships. Indeed there are over 40 due to be delivered in the next three years. They again sell from the top down with the owner’s suites selling first. Whilst the top end of these ships use the descriptor of Yacht for their ships, these are clearly cruise ships with between 100 and 700 passengers. Research proves that these ships and the resultant cruises only appeal to a very small percentage of UHNWIs. This group want a yacht experience. Normally this will be through charter, but this is highly restrictive since there is a definitive number of 40m+ yachts for charter, and many of these are designed for coastal cruising. For people following the trend of special experiential experiences, the choice is becoming restrictive. Capable of going places that cruise ships cannot go, and with a full world itinerary put together by our experts. Our business plan proves that this will return high yearly returns and strong money on money multiplication over a 12-year period. We are currently looking at investors for this project. Our smaller yacht, the 48m Cape Hawk 690, with six suites, is equally capable, with long range and eminently capable of sailing in challenging areas, whether extreme hot or extreme cold conditions. The most luxurious charter yacht in the Pacific awaits! Bonus Season has passed, and some of you will be thinking about how best to reward yourself after another successful year, and I personally think SPIRIT might just be the answer. This superyacht was designed from the get-go to entertain, to be enjoyed with a group of friends. SPIRIT is unique as she is a wavepiercer with two hulls, affording one significant advantage: a smooth ride. There are very few superyachts on the market that have two hulls, and if you haven’t been on one before then you are in for a treat. SPIRIT is a guaranteed head turner - she is ultimately stylish, and there is plenty of space on her three expansive decks for you and your guests to relax and entertain. She can accommodate up to 12 yachts in five staterooms, which include the master stateroom, VIP cabins with two queen size beds, which can be converted into twin cabins, plus two further cabins. The exterior design was realised by Ken Freivokh - a world-renowned designer, who made sure that any guests on board had plenty of space and stable ride. Combining comfort, luxury and fun, the range of fantastic facilities on board plus her top notch and highly knowledgeable crew complete a charter holiday that only dreams are made of. Welcome to your own slice of paradise. So where can you charter SPIRIT? To experience SPIRIT, you need to head to Australia and the beautiful South Pacific. This is a part of the world attracting sun all year round, meaning you can charter both in the winter and summer. SPIRIT is also not a high price to charter, with rates starting at USD 90,000 per week; this is a fantastic value compared to other superyachts in this class. As per usual terms, this does not include expenses, so factor in another 30% for the advance provisioning allowance, on top of that rate, to be sure. The Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef are ideally explored by yacht, opening up new possibilities and discoveries, entirely out of the ordinary. With SPIRIT’s intimate local knowledge, you are ensured of top quality service, alongside unparalleled safety and security throughout these regions, when chartering with friends and family. Her high-level crew provide a warm welcome, eager to share their detailed knowledge of the South Pacific and make your charter memories unforgettable. Snorkelling, fishing, diving, kiteboarding - there is an endless list of activities available (some with instructors), set against

the backdrop of natural beauty, where the Pacific turns into your ultimate playground. SPIRIT cruises some stunning and unusual areas, why not go out on a limb and move away from the ordinary. So, let’s meet our chef on board SPIRIT, and this month I pleased to present Jo Debanks. What made you want to become a chef? I guess you could say cooking is in my blood. My mother cooked professionally, and therefore we grew up surrounded by great food. I have continued my love for food throughout my life, and I started working on boats in my early 20’s. It seemed a natural progression to pursue a career in cooking. There is nothing like the feeling of putting your heart and soul onto a plate and your guests enjoying it.

How long have you been cooking professionally? I have been cooking for over 25 years now on boats and yachts. I started my career working on high-end dive charter boats in the Middle East and Africa, which could certainly be challenging at times but this is definitely something I thrive on, sourcing fresh local produce and turning it into something amazing. I then progressed to working on superyachts worldwide.

Do you have a favourite ingredient? I worked on a 40m sports fisher for 12 years, which we circumnavigated on twice, so would have to say fish and all types of seafood are my speciality. It is very exciting for a guest to have his/her catch of the day served up for lunch or dinner after they have either fought the fish or sat on the aft deck with a rod or hand line soaking up the day.

What is your favourite wine? Living in Australia, and so close to New Zealand, we are spoilt for choice. My tastes have definitely changed over the years, and I have to admit there is nothing like sitting down to a delicious seafood lunch with a cold glass of Pinot Gris in hand. A full-bodied Shiraz is my favourite of the reds, and the choice that we get here is amazing. A great steak that has been charred on the BBQ and glass of red is an excellent way to end the day. We often do theme nights on board and Australian night is always a hit. The guests get to taste kangaroo, crocodile and emu. These all pair great with a Pinot Noir.

What do you like to cook when you

YACHTING

Captain Martin & Chef Jo Debanks are home alone? My husband and I tend to eat simply and healthily when at home. With such fantastic fresh produce at our fingertips here in Australia, once again we are spoilt for choice. Of course, living in Australia, the BBQ is always ready to go. Living and having a home port, gives me the chance to grow my own herbs and edible plants which I incorporate into my menus. That gives me great pleasure.

What is the most stressful part of your job? I wouldn’t say my job is stressful. It can be challenging at times, especially when we are in remote areas and I am relying on other people to procure my provisions. If the order doesn’t show up and your guests have requested something specific, that can be an issue. I do pride myself on creating gourmet food with what is available to hand.

What are you your top 3 career highlights? Being lucky enough to have been on the same yacht for 12 years has let me see and experience some of the most amazing sights imaginable. Nature and what she has to offer is truly wonderful. It is hard to pinpoint the highlights as there are so many. When we were in Alaska we waited three months to see the humpback whales “bubble netting” which is a unique and complex feeding behaviour performed by a pod of whales, the sound, sight and smell is something we as a crew will never forget. The fresh fish I got to prepare was amazing. Hundred and one ways to cook salmon and halibut! Keeping the menu exciting, as the owner and his guests were on board for the whole time we were there, was easy with all the fresh seafood on hand. I would decide on a menu, walk down to the aft deck, see a beautiful side of King Salmon freshly filleted and salmon was once again on the menu. There were never any complaints. Spending time on the African coast was raw and exhilarating. We spent a good amount of time in Bom Principe Island, which is in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Africa and that really was a

place lost in time. This was probably my most challenging country to get provisions that were up to standard, but so rewarding when you see the finished product served to your guests. When in Mexico our boss owned a very well-known and reputable highend hotel, which often had celebrity guests. We were lucky enough to get to take them out on the yacht to experience all that the Sea of Cortez has to offer. The diving and sea life there is phenomenal.

How did you get into yachting? Well, I will have to cut a long story short on this one! As I mentioned above, I was working in the diving industry for over a decade in farflung places worldwide. Myself and my husband chose to get married in Mexico where we met a very wealthy hotel owner, and he asked us to run his yacht for him. We did this for a couple of years based in Mexico which was a fantastic experience and then we ventured onto yachts with a more adventurous itinerary.

What is your view on the yachting industry? Well having spent the past 27 years in this industry, I guess you could say I love it. It is a fantastic way to do what you enjoy doing for work, and the massive bonus is you get to travel and see the world. Our last yacht saw us circumnavigate twice around the world, so the sights I have seen are amazing. Getting the right boat for you is by far the most important, the owner and itinerary are also a big part of it. The camaraderie you can build with the right crew is something that you will take away with you forever and use through the rest of your life. I feel it is a privilege for crew of any level to experience working in the yachting industry. What is your favourite yachting destination? I would have to say Australia and the South Pacific Islands. We have so much to offer here for the most discerning clients. Diving, fishing, snorkelling, hiking, paddle boarding and kiteboarding, to name a few, are so easy to facilitate.

What is the difference between cooking in a restaurant to a yacht? There are many differences between cooking in a restaurant to on board a yacht. Depending on what size yacht you are on, as a yacht chef you are generally doing everything all yourself. From the breakfast breads, to the 3-course lunch and dinners plus all the bits in between. Once you leave port there is no popping to the shops if you have forgotten something. You have to be prepared for anything that your guests may desire at the last minute. An open mind and quick thinking and massive organisational skills are, in my opinion, imperative to being a successful yacht chef. The guest’s preferences are the most important ingredient, and I strive to make all our guests happy.

What is your most interesting or fun experience on board the yacht? I would say the most interesting and fun experience is travelling to new destinations when you never really know what is in store for you. You can you do your research but you never really know until you get there. One of my favourite parts of my job is getting in amongst the locals on the islands, and tasting produce that I have never seen before and learning how to prepare it the way the locals do. Where possible I always incorporate local cuisine into my menu. As long as the guests are game! What advice would you give to firsttime charter guests? From the food side of things, I would suggest being clear in your likes, dislikes allergies etc. It will make their trip so much better from the get-go, that they are getting the food and beverages they like. The crew are there for you. They have a lot of experience about the yacht, the ocean and the current cruising area, so it is good to use their knowledge and expertise. We are lucky enough to currently have a crew on board that are passionate about all things to do with the ocean and what she has to offer. SPIRIT is special and should be experience whether you are new to chartering or experienced.

REAL ESTATE

ON THE MARKET IN CANNES The French Riviera gets over 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, which is why is so very popular for real estate investment. With villas, mansions, apartments and homes located throughout the coastline there is a property for anyone, no matter what your taste, budget or size is. The exciting part of buying a property on the coast is that you very rarely need to do extensive work on the property as they are all very

well maintained by their owners. Naturally, you will need to redecorate the interior, but this is normal for any new purchase. Our Advice... When purchasing a property in the French Riviera, take your time and see a more than a handful of properties, as each one is unique and offers something different. Some may have more bedrooms, more land, a

private beach etc. Most buyers are open minded and buy property as their summer vacation home, a place they can retreat too for family time. This also brings us to another factor, why are you buying? Is it for your family, for hosting, or investment. Once you know precisely why you are buying in this part of France, you then have a more comfortable decision when you are ready to buy. The other main reason to buy a

property here is that you have direct access to the Cannes Festival. This is an event where we celebrate the film and fashion industry drawing professionals from around the world. If you have not been, it is a definite must. We had a look at some of the properties that Cannes had to offer and with so many we hand picked three that we liked and they are for sale right now!

“You hear people saying, ‘Oh I’m so tired, I’ve had enough of Cannes.’ How can you have enough of Cannes? It’s just the best place to be, like a fairytale.” - Marjane Satrapi

The world’s most comfortable bed, hand made in London

Ever since it first opened in 1889, The Savoy has been famous for luxury and innovation. Not surprisingly, given the importance of a great night’s sleep to a great hotel, way back in 1905, Rupert D’Oyly Carte, Chairman and son of the founder, decided it was time to create the world’s most comfortable bed. The Savoy Bed became legend, and soon the bedworks, owned by the hotel, was producing beds not just for the hotel but also for guests who wanted the same quality of sleep at home. The secret to the bed lay in the finest natural materials, including long, loose, curled horse tail, and unparalleled craftsmanship. In 1997 the bedworks became independent as Savoir Beds. To this day Savoir continues to hand-craft the original Savoy Bed and still supplies the The Savoy with beds for all the Riverside Suites and The Royal Suite. Luminaries as diverse as Sir Winston Churchill, Giacomo Puccini and Marilyn Monroe have experienced the cloud-like comfort of our beds, and others such as Liza Minnelli and Emma Thompson have insisted on taking one home after a stay.
