The BIG Camp, to be held at the Yorkshire Events Centre in Harrogate between the 4th and 7th May 2012, promises to be a fantastic event offering over 250 on site activities for members of all sections. Network / Explorers and Scouts will arrive on Friday 4th May, Cubs on Saturday 5th May and Beavers on Sunday 6th May. Full details including prices can be found on our website - http://www.thebigcamp.net/about.php Can you help? At BIG Camp we are holding a small trade exhibition and selling advertising space in the camp program. This is to raise money towards the camp but is also a great advertising opportunity for companies. There will be about 1000 leaders at the camp from groups all over the north of England so the potential market is quite large. We already have a major Scout tent manufacturer and an outdoor retail company on board. If you have any contacts in companies who might be interested please pass their details to Trevor Newman, ACC Event Management (preferably with their consent). Contact Trevor on trevor@ilkley.me Security Team The event needs to provide an individual(s) for the Big Camp who is/are SIA registered and is willing to provide Security cover between 6pm and 8am on Wednesday 2nd May to Monday 7th may inclusive. So anyone who can help - even for one shift would be very welcome. The security officer would be based in a building controlling potential access and exit from the site. Please get in touch if you can help or have a contact we can follow up.

Read all about it! The latest issue (number 11) of the camp newsletter can be downloaded by visiting http://db.tt/gopBYOva Staff support needed! Are you taking your young people to the event? If so... can you spare a little time over the weekend? Any time that you can give would be great and we can work around your group commitments... whether it is half a day or the whole weekend... it all helps and we would love to hear from you! Are you an activity instructor? We are looking for instructors for climbing, abseiling, caving, crate stacking, water activities, archery, shooting and much more! If you are suitably qualified and can join our programme team then please get in touch! Do you know a group of people who would like to support the event? Maybe you have a contact with your local guides? Or contacts in another County? We are looking for teams of people including Active Supports and Networks to support us! Making everyone’s small contribution into BIG difference The phrase “value added” is something we all look for in everyday life, something for not a lot extra. In Scouting we are great at achieving big things from next to nothing. A Scout District which has a lot happening and people pulling together, often achieves a lot. Setting the tone and scope of how this is done is often down to the District Commissioner. The District Commissioner creates a team which empowers people to do and make things happen. You look at the last big district event – what made it the success it was? Yes lots of people doing many small things which contribute to a huge sense of pride. The District Commissioner search, which is currently on-going, is looking for individuals, who love motivating others to achieve, especially in the bigger picture of the district. These very District Commissioners have a talent for leading from the back and ensuring the credit for the success is shared, this takes someone special. Do you know someone who excels in doing this? With only a few days until the close for nominations, please get your thinking caps on and encourage others to think like-wise. We know that both Districts have extra-ordinary people doing some great things. We want to make sure that the future is bright for both of them, by finding the right individuals to take on these important roles. The nominations for the vacancies close on 23rd March, we welcome nominations from as many different people involved in the districts. Details and forms/letters can be found by visiting http://www.wyscouts.org.uk/dcsearch/ and nominations should be emailed to: Stuart Nimmo stuart.nimmo@scouts.org.uk

Margaret, as she was known, was a stalwart of the Scouting community in Bradford and served faithfully for over 37 years, first in Bradford South in 1958 as a member of the now closed, St Andrews Church Scout Group in Listerhills, before moving to Bradford East which later became Bradford North. Some years ago Margaret was also awarded runner up in a National good neighbour award which clearly speaks volumes of the kind of person she was. As a Scouter Margaret clearly followed her Law and Promise to the letter and did her best right to the end. Thank you Margaret for your dedication and service to the young people of Bradford.. Our thoughts at this time are with her family in their sad loss. Stew Jessop District Commissioner Bradford South

The 50th Fellsman 28th-29th April 2012 www.fellsman.org.uk Do you fancy a challenge? The Fellsman, organised and run by Keighley District Scout Service Team, is most certainly a challenge and this year it is celebrating it’s 50th birthday. The first Fellsman took place in May 1962 with only 57 starters, 15 of whom managed to complete the event. Since then there has been a dramatic increase in the popularity of the challenge, with the 450 place limit being met on numerous occastions. I’ve never heard of the Fellsman, what is it? The Fellsman is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield, through the picturesque landscape of the fells which includes climbing both Ingleborough and Whernside – two of the famous Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well defined footpaths, so the entrants' navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness.

The bar will be open, as indeed we will also be providing non-alcoholic refreshments and nibbles.

OTHER ITEMS Bag a bargain! I have recently started making bean bags to order in various different shapes and sizes, advertising via Facebook and my new website www.bagofbeans.co.uk and have had a good take up. I have also had enquiries from a local scout group regarding throwing bean bags, as they are quite expensive through other sources. I have priced these up and are now making them available at £1.00 per bean bag and are available in various colours. I have made these available to my own district and am now opening up the opportunity to purchase them to the County. If anyone is interested in purchasing them or would like any further information then please get in touch with me on info@bagofbeans.co.uk or ring me on 0771 938 9868 Joanna Nelson
