County Explorer Scouts Linking Challenge 2011 There are four simple elements to this challenge (details on www.wyscouts.org.uk). All that you have to do to take part in the challenge is register on the Explorer pages of www.wyscouts.org.uk and keep updating us on how your challenge is going!

Chief Scouts Award Presentations There is a confirmed date in the diary for the next event which will take place in Keighley on Sunday 2nd October 2011.

But that's not all why not make a weekend of it, camping is only £2.50 including breakfast on the Sunday and you could even try one of the many activities on site. Safeguarding courses update The update on course dates until the end of 2011 is: Tuesday 19th July (7pm – 9:30pm) Wednesday 7th September (7pm – 9:30pm) Sunday 9th October (9:30am – 12:30pm) Sunday 9th October (1:30pm – 4:30pm) Tuesday 22nd November (7pm – 9:30pm) Wednesday 7th December (7pm – 9:30pm) All the above courses are non-uniformed and held at the Jubilee Centre (Bradley Wood Scout Campsite, HD6 3TU). Please note that the evening courses start at 7pm prompt – it’s a very busy two and half hour course and if you turn up late you might be refused admission. Help us to celebrate our 60th anniversary! On Saturday 23rd July it’s our Group's 60th Anniversary, come along and help us celebrate! The day starts at 10.45am with a parade through the centre of Golcar at 11am. Following the parade the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire will officially open Golcar Scout and Community Centre on behalf of the Queen. The Chief Commissioner of England will be officially opening the 'Gilwell Room', a multipurpose room designed for both meeting and training events. You can visit our History of Scouting Museum, have a go at Archery or have fun on the bouncy castle! Why not sit back and relax and watch 'The Legend of Robin Hood' - our feature length film, staring members of 4th Golcar Scout Group! Blackhills Campsite Updates Energy Costs As with most of you at home and along many other campsites and Group headquarters, we have absorbed consistent price increases from our energy suppliers of gas and electric. We are no longer able to sustain these increased costs within the hiring fees and for building bookings from October 1st 2011 to March 31st 2012 a winter surcharge will regrettably be levied. In order to be as fair as possible, we will be investing in energy conservation equipment by installing time and temperature clocks to the buildings. We will be calculating the potential savings against our energy bills and discussing the surcharge level during August; we will then post the final figure on the website, and update the on-line price lists. We will be accepting bookings (where availability exists) at the current price list till then, on our usual number 0845 094 8894. Smoking Policy We all have a responsibility to make sure we offer Scouting to young people in a safe environment. The well-being of the young people in Scouting is paramount and we must ensure that no young person is subjected to tobacco smoke. This also applies to anyone who does not wish to be subjected to tobacco smoke. As such this campsite operates a smoking policy in addition to laws which already prohibit smoking in all enclosed buildings, and tents/marquees. Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area of the main site car park. Please dispose your cigarette butts responsibly.

Night Hawk Challenge This event is will take place on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October and is organised by Huddersfield North.

You Scout With members from every part of the UK, Scouting represents a range of views - we want our public affairs work to do the same.

The event is open to teams of 4 to 7 Scouts or Explorers who have been trained in night navigation and stealth who will aim to complete the hike without being caught by the hunters.

That’s why we are setting up YouScout (http://bit.ly/youscout), an opinion poll made up of Network, Explorers and Young Leaders in these sections.

We will be calling on members of this group to give their opinions on a range of topical issues, quite often at short notice, to inform our work with the Government, media and other decision makers. Gilwell Reunion Reunion is an event which happens every year on the first full weekend in September and is open to all adult Scouters.

Reunion is an event which allows adults and Scout Network members to come together for a weekend full of: socialising with old and new friends programme ideas to take back to the younger sections training sessions and workshops on topics that affect you as an individual on-site activities meeting the UK Chief Commissioner and team evening entertainment including Abba Girls Gilwell Reunion bookings are now open (http://www.scouts.org.uk/reunion) for this year’s event taking place at Gilwell Park on 2nd – 4th September 2011.

Changes to badge requirements

Apex Extreme

A number of badge requirements have been updated or amended as of June 2011.

The massive adventure event is taking place from Friday 30th September until Sunday 2nd October 2011 at a stunning new location – Bramhope Scout Campsite.

Most changes are very minor, but for full details please see the PDFs below which describe changes relevant to each section. For a full list of all badge requirements, please see the badges and awards section of Member resources (http://bit.ly/badgesjun2011).

Media workshops A series of national one-day media workshops have been arranged to provide media skills to any adult interested in doing positive Scouting media work at Group, District or County level. These events will be taking place on: Saturday 24th September 2011 - Leicestershire Scout County Centre Saturday 21st January 2012 - Leeds There will be no charge for participants to attend any of these courses. Objectives The aims of these workshops have been designed to meet the following needs: To be able to describe the Scout brand To use the brand to positively package Scouting To understand benefits of creating a positive Scout image To show participants that good PR is possible and how to do it To demonstrate the importance of planning To know what support is available for Media Development Managers and how to access it To commit to action to raise Scouting’s profile through positive media work. The team are already busy working on plans for the event including the introduction of an 'urban challenge' as well as a stack of other adventure activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and head-spinning high ropes courses. Another key date for your diary is Tuesday 30th August 2011. This is the day when online entries will open for this Apex Extreme competition, and please bear in mind the last event filled up in just 36 hours. YouScout The views of our youth members are a powerful way of influencing the media, government and decision makers. By canvassing young people via a short poll (http://bit.ly/gstaAo) on key issues, Scouts will be able to comment on topics that affect young people. Please ask members aged between 13 and 25 to fill in a short questionnaire.

Giants Birthday Bonanza

Safety at sea competition The Maritime and Coastguard Agency is on the lookout for Scout Groups to take part in a competition to produce material promoting safety at sea or along the coast to other young people. This could be a film, poster, leaflet, magazine, article, radio interview or whatever you like. The winning entry will receive £500 towards an adventure of their choice, while two runners-up will be awarded £300 and £200 respectively.

Eureka! Cub Badge Days We thought you might also be interested to hear about a new programme we are offering to uniformed groups called Eureka! Badge Days where groups of Brownies, Cubs etc will be able to take part in a number of drop-in activities whilst exploring the museum and at the end of the day they will be awarded with a very special Eureka! If you are not aware we have had to move our current home to The Shay ground in Halifax and have played 2 of 3 fixtures there, we have our first game back in Huddersfield on the 31st of July. For this game we are also doing a special ticket offer of a ticket price of £10 for adults, £5 for concessions, £2 for 12-16 year olds and under 12’s are free do you think this would also appeal to the Beavers/Cubs/Scouts/Explorers in our area as we are trying our best to get a bumper crowd for our first game back at home.

Austrian Jamboree Anniversary It is 60 years this year since the Jamboree in Austria and I was the youngest member of the West Riding contingent. I am in regular contact with a fellow attendee now living in New Zealand and am wondering if there are other survivors of that exciting event. I was invested in 1947 by the late and much loved Stanley Jackson who was Skipper of the now defunct 42nd Bradford East. After the ceremony he told me to remember that once a Scout always a Scout and I have tried hard to honour his memory by remembering that. Unfortunately, for long periods I had no direct contact with Scouting, however I have always felt to be a Scout bound by my Promise and the Scout Law. (I have heard that Mr Jackson’s daughter is still involved in Scouting in Bradford.) Currently I have a close involvement with the 1st Shipley (Windhill) Group having been Chairman for 5 years and now a Committee member. If there are other members of the contingent still around, please consider passing them my contact details.
