Jar of Hope Appeal Many people are surprised to hear that even today one person is diagnosed with leprosy every two minutes. Over 300,000 children and adults are diagnosed with leprosy each year. Leprosy is completely curable, it only costs around £21 to help cure a child of this disease and LEPRA Health in Action is asking youth groups to support the Jar of Hope Appeal. With your help LEPRA will be able to ensure a cure and further care for many more children who have leprosy. For some of these children it may mean the restoration of sight, for others the use again of hands and feet. Others, diagnosed early will be prevented from disability, but for them all it will be the gift of health and a more secure future. The LEPRA Jar of Hope allows young people to collect modest donations from family and friends, to undertake tasks for modest rewards towards their donations and compliments the Community Service element of Guiding. This simple, easily managed fundraising initiative will ensure that children are cured of leprosy. Your young people would play a crucial role in the important work of LEPRA. There can be no finer example of Community Service! All those who take part will receive a LEPRA badge. What to do now! Ask the children in your group to get an empty jar & attach one of the labels and start collecting donations straight away. Give them a date to return their donations – we suggest one month from the day the labels are given out. Collect the donations in from the children, count and bank the money and send LEPRA a cheque for the amount they have collected. Cheques made payable to ‘LEPRA Health in Action’ and post it to the address below.
