CWD Testing Encouraged This Hunting Season

As the 2026 hunt season gears up in areas across Wyoming, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department would like to remind hunters to have their harvested animal tested for chronic wasting disease. Game and Fish needs help from hunters this fall to collect lymph node samples from deer and elk for chronic wasting disease testing in focused monitoring hunt areas across Wyoming. Hunters play a critical role in helping Game and Fish understand the disease and achieve CWD monitoring goals. To submit a harvested animal for testing, hunters can visit a game check station, drop off the animal at a Game and Fish regional office or collect a sample themselves by following online guidelines and submitting it directly to the Wildlife Health Lab. Animals harvested from any hunt area, even outside of focus areas, will be accepted. If you hunt in a focus area selected for monitoring or mandatory sampling, you may receive additional communications about how to submit CWD samples. Hunters can view 2026 monitoring and mandatory sampling areas to determine if they may be asked to participate in surveillance efforts. Results from Game and Fish surveillance are typically accessible online within three weeks through a hunter's website dashboard, or within 10 working days via the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab in Laramie for a fee. To minimize risks and meat processing costs while waiting for results, hunters are encouraged to quarter and freeze their meat, wear latex or rubber gloves during field dressing, minimize handling of brain and spinal tissue, bone out meat and refrain from eating the brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen or lymph nodes. Processing tools should be cleaned of tissue and disinfected in a 40% household bleach solution for at least five minutes before rinsing. Hunters can further assist wildlife management by reporting sick animals, having harvests tested in designated focus areas and adhering to Wyoming’s carcass transport and importation regulations. 2026 Wyoming Game & Fish Hunt Forecast Laramie Region

Pronghorn - Pronghorn populations are performing well throughout most of the region, with license issuance increasing in most Hunt Areas west of the Laramie Mountains. However, grassland herds east of the Laramie Mountains, including Hunt Areas 11, 34, 38, and 103, are experiencing severe drought conditions. While buck numbers remain decent in these herds, pronghorn may be more difficult to locate due to a scarcity of water on the landscape. Overall, hunting opportunities within the Laramie Region will remain similar or better than previous years. Mule Deer - Mild winter conditions likely benefited mule deer herds throughout the region. Adult buck numbers are strong in the Platte Valley and Sheep Mountain herds; however, a warmer-than-average fall could lead to difficult hunting conditions. Hunting in the Shirley Mountains and Laramie Range should be consistent with past years. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) continues to slowly increase across herd units. The Goshen Rim Herd Unit currently has the highest prevalence at 36%. Other herds that averaged less than 10% five years ago have risen to approximately 15%, representing a concerning trend for mule deer populations. Hunters in Hunt Areas 15, 61, 74, 75, 76, and 77 must be aware that these areas are under mandatory CWD sampling. Wildlife biologists, technicians, and game wardens will be active throughout the season at check stations to assist with collection efforts. CWD head box locations, and other sampling sites for harvested mule deer. Elk - Populations remain above objective, providing ample harvest opportunities throughout the region. The Type 8 license, introduced in 2024 for Hunt Areas 3, 6, 7, and 8, will continue in 2026. This reduced-price cow/calf license is unlimited in number; however, limitations vary by Hunt Area, so hunters are encouraged to review the regulations. Bull hunting opportunities remain favorable across the region, including in general hunt areas. Given the hunting pressure on public land, hunters should be prepared to pursue elk at a distance from well-traveled roads and trails. Look for additional access on properties enrolled in the Game and Fish "Access Yes" program, and ensure you secure a permission slip if required. Weather Conditions - While winter conditions were mild, spring and summer precipitation has been below average, especially at lower elevations. Consequently, range conditions are poorer than in previous years. Source: Wyoming Game and Fish Department

Limited Quota Deer Licenses es There are two categories of deer hunt areas in Wyoming: limited quota and general. Limited quota deerr hunt areas have a set numberr of cific licenses valid for that specific ve hunt area. These areas have d" d full-price "any" or "antlered" deer licenses (Type 0, 1, 2 orr 9). Type 3 licenses are only valid for (any) white-tailed deer, and do NOT permit mule deer harvest. Many hunt areas provide reduced-price limited quota "doe/fawn" e licenses (Type 6, 7 or 8). Type ke 6 and 7 licenses permit the take of doe or fawn mule deer o orr nse es white-tailed deer. Type 8 licenses awn n are only valid for doe or fa fawn white-tailed deer.

General Deer Licenses General deer licenses are e full-price price licenses es umber of lice licenses cen issued that are unlimited in the number statewide and are available for purchase "over-the-counter" for Wyoming residents. Hunters may apply for or purchase a maximum of one general deer license per year. General deer licenses may be used in any hunt area open to general license hunting and are subject to the season dates and limitations for that hunt area as set forth in the Chapter 6 Deer Hunting Season Regulation. Nonresident deer hunters wishing to hunt a general area must obtain a Region General License specific to a select region. Region General Licenses allow a nonresident to hunt deer in any hunt area within that region that is open to general license hunting and are subject to the season dates and limitations for that hunt area as set forth in the Chapter 6 Deer Hunting Season Regulation. For example, nonresident Region B Licenses are valid in Deer Hunt Areas 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 21, which are open to general license hunting. However, Region B licenses are NOT valid in Deer Hunt Areas 10 and 22 (although these two hunt areas fall within Region B) as these hunt areas are limited quota. Many general license deer hunt areas also have additional limited quota full-price and/or reduced-price licenses available.

Location In the table of tentative deer hunting season information for this coming year, some license types are denoted with an asterisk (*) as having difficult public access. For these license types, there is limited opportunity to harvest a deer on accessible public land. If applying for a license type(s) with difficult public access, hunters should recognize that hunter densities may be high on accessible public land or that deer densities may be low. Five most common hunting violations

CHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and Fish offices receive numerous questions about various game laws and what hunters can and cannot do while in the field. Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may differ from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some laws and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of five common violations that crop up every hunting season. Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred. Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally fire a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement. Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular traffic to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not defined as public roads. Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specific sex of animal. There are also season dates in different hunt areas when only a specific sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: “in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specific sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.” Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, fish, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property. The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsibility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307- 775-6256. Many Wyoming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. For hunters with GPS units a micro SD chip is available from the Game and Fish, 307-777-4600, that shows land status and hunter location. 2 lbs antelope roast sliced thin 2 cups rice (cook as directed on package) 2 tbsp hoisin sauce 1 tbsp soy sauce 3 garlic cloves minced 1 tbsp fresh ginger minced 1/2 cup chicken broth 1 cup sweet mini bell peppers chopped 1 small white onion diced 8 oz sliced water chestnuts drained 6 green onions chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 1. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. 2. Add the antelope and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until lightly browned. 3. Add garlic, sweet peppers and white onion and cook an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently. 4. Stir in the water chesnuts. 5. In a small bowl, combine chicken broth, hoisin sauce, soy sauce and ginger. 6. Add to antelope mixture and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. 7. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 4 to 5 minutes, or until sauce thickens. 8. Serve over hot cooked rice. Garnish with chopped green onions.

Cajun Dirty Rice

1 1/2 cups long-grain rice 3 tablespoons duck fat, lard or vegetable oil 1/2 to 1 cup livers from birds or about 3 ounces deer liver 1/2 to 1 pound of ground meat from gizzards and hearts or any other ground meat Salt 1 1/2 cups meat broth 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 to 3 hot chiles, anywhere from Tabasco to jalapeno, finely chopped 1 to 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning 1 teaspoon dried oregano 4 green onions chopped 1. Cook the rice as usual. Move the cooked rice to a sheet pan and lay it out to cool. You need to start with cool rice. And yes, you can do this step a day ahead if you want. 2. If you are using gizzards, clean them of grit and that silver membrane and either chop fine or grind in a meat grinder. A meat grinder is better, but not everyone has one. Alternately, you can use any ground meat. Either finely grind or finely chop the livers. 3. Heat the duck fat over medium-high heat and, when it is hot, add the ground gizzards and the chopped livers. Toss to coat in the fat and then let them sit a bit to develop a crust on the bottom of the pan. Stir only occasionally, as you want to develop a good crust. If your Cajun seasoning isn't salty, salt the meat now. 4. Pour about 1/4 cup of the broth into the pan and use it to scrape up the browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Add the onion, peppers, celery and garlic. Mix to combine and Cook for a solid 3 to 5 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. 5. Sprinkle over the oregano and the Cajun seasoning and let a crust form on the bottom of the pan again. When it does, add the rest of the broth and the rice and mix to combine. Scrape the bottom of the pan again. When the liquid has almost totally evaporated, mix in the green onions. You're ready when the liquid has all evaporated. Serve hot.
