Word of the Week - B is for

BANNET

In Scotland, many words resemble American English but have a vowel or a consonant changed. For example, a BANNET is the Scots spelling of BONNET, a type of cap. The color BLUE in English is BLAE in Scottish. In English we BLATHER on, in Scots we BLETHER. It’s CAULD outside in the winter. An EEJIT is an IDIOT. To be GUID is to be GOOD. (And GUID can be pluralized – GUIDS.) MAIR is MORE. Not all Scottish words sound like English. TREWS are TROUSERS, for example. A TATTIE is a POTATO. WHA is not WHO, but rather WHAT. Word of the Week Provided by Barbara Peterson Barbara Peterson is the President of the Scrabble Club. “Please join us every Wednesday night at the Laramie County Library.
