Daniel Greenstein Chancellor

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education

Daniel Greenstein became the fifth chancellor of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Sept. 4, 2018.

In this role, he serves as chief executive officer of the State System, which operates Pennsylvania’s 10 public universities on 14 campuses, serving more than 85,000 students. The chancellor works with the board of governors to recommend and develop overall policies for the System.

Greenstein previously led the Postsecondary Success strategy at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he worked with other higher education leaders across the country on initiatives designed to raise educational-attainment levels and to promote economic mobility, especially among low-income and minority students. He developed and implemented a national strategy for increasing the number of degrees awarded and for reducing the

attainment gaps among majority and non-majority students at U.S. colleges and universities.

Before joining the foundation, Greenstein was vice provost for academic planning and programs for the University of California system. In that role, he oversaw system-wide academic planning and programs, including the University of California Press; the California Digital Library; the UC system’s Education Abroad Program; internship programs in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento; and UC Online Education.

Greenstein has created and led several internet-based academic information services in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and served on boards and acted in strategic consulting roles for educational, cultural heritage, and information organizations. He began his academic career as a senior lecturer in modern history at Glasgow University in Scotland.

He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Oxford.

An enthusiastic cyclist, he and his wife, Melissa, have two children.

Domenic Ionta Chair

Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees

Domenic Ionta was appointed to a seat on SRU’s council of trustees, Jan. 31, 2020.

A native of New Castle, Ionta earned a bachelor’s degree in education from then-Slippery Rock State College in 1963. He is a former teacher (Southwest Butler County and Seneca Valley school districts), principal (Beaver Area Jr.-Sr. High School), superintendent (Union Area School District) and acting superintendent (Union and Greenville Area school districts). He also served as interim director for the Lawrence County Career and Tech Center and Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School.

Ionta also earned a master’s degree in education from Westminster College (1967) and a superintendent’s letter of eligibility from Youngstown State University (1978).

Karen Riley

President

Slippery Rock University

Karen Riley joined Slippery Rock University as its 18th president on July 1, 2023. As the University’s top executive administrator, Riley is continuing the legacy of keeping SRU as one of the leading public institutions in Pennsylvania. During Riley’s presidency, she will create a new strategic plan and oversee the next era of the University. From its heritage as a teachers college more than 130 years ago, to today offering more than 150 academic programs and credentials across five colleges, SRU will continue to evolve to support its students.

Riley was previously provost and chief academic officer at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, from 2021-23. While there, she developed and launched an academic plan focused on excellence in teaching, research and student thriving.

Before joining Regis University, Riley was dean of the College of Education at the University of Denver from 2014-21. During

that time, Riley increased scholarly productivity across the college, raised over $27 million dollars, increased the number of students, faculty and staff and launched a Center for Professional Development to provide certificates and stackable credentials.

Riley began her career at the University of Denver in 2001 as a project coordinator and rose through the faculty ranks as an assistant (2004-10) and associate (2010-17) professor of child, family and school psychology. She became chair of the Educational Research Policy and Practice Department in 2011, before becoming interim dean of the College of Education in 2013.

An expert in neurodevelopmental disorders, Riley has researched approaches to addressing societal issues and improving the lives of those affected by Fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome. She spent the first decade of her career as an early childhood specialist and special education coordinator in public schools.

Riley earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Colorado State University and a master’s degree in early childhood special education and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Denver.

Cheryle Campbell

Commencement Speaker

Cheryle Campbell worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for nearly 40 years before retiring as the director of the agency’s Pittsburgh Field Office. As director, she coordinated the operations of an 80-person staff in the fields of community development, affordable family housing, fair housing and equal opportunity, public housing, human resources, media representation, congressional relations and strategic management planning.

A 1967 SRU graduate, Campbell was recognized in 2015 as a recipient of the SRU Distinguished Alumni Award. She also received the distinguished alumni award from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

Campbell is a member of the SRU Foundation, Inc., Board of Directors. She established the H. Margaret Campbell Endowed Scholarship for Advancing Women’s Leadership and she is recognized at the Aquamarine Level of the Lifetime Giving Society.

A resident of Pittsburgh, Campbell spends winter months at her home in Bradenton, Florida.

Jonathan Bailey

Commencement Speaker

Jonathan Bailey, a 1996 SRU graduate with a degree in exercise science, is the vice president of operations at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, Pennsylvania. He is responsible for the hospital’s daily departmental operations, access and utilization of services strategies, long-range planning and physician recruitment.

Prior to his vice president role, he was the director of operations and imaging services at UPMC Horizon/ UPMC Jameson. In that role, Bailey served as the administrative contact between UPMC Jameson, UPMC Horizon and systemwide UPMC service lines to include UPMC Centers for Rehab Services, construction, laboratory services, corporate real estate, marketing and supply chain management.

Bailey serves on a variety of boards including: the Pitt Titusville Hub Advisory Board, PennWest ClarionVenango Advisory Council and Northern Mercer County Community Foundation. He is chairman of the Greenville Borough Planning Commission and the Greenville Sanitary Authority.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree at SRU, Bailey has a master’s degree in business administration from Point Park University.

Jack Cohen

Jack Cohen is the president and chief executive officer of the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, a nonprofit organization designed to attract visitors to Butler County, Pennsylvania. In 2001, when the bureau was founded, Cohen became an active board member and chair. He was named head of the bureau in 2003. Since that time, Cohen’s dedication and vision have been instrumental in the growth of the bureau.

One of Cohen’s most notable contributions to Butler County is the creation of the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. Since the first event in 2011, the festival has attracted Jeep enthusiasts from all over the continent. In 2016, it was named “Pennsylvania Event of the Year” by the Keystone Society for Tourism.

In addition to his role as president of BCTCB, Cohen was the 2022-23 Rotary district governor of District 72-80. He has been vice president of the Community Development Corporation of Butler County since 2012.

Previously, Cohen was on the executive board of Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association, the president of the International Association of Family Entertainment Centers and also Pittsburgh & Its Countryside. He served on the board of the North Country National Scenic Trail, Moraine Preservation Fund, the Butler Community Health Clinic, and Cranberry Township’s Parks and Recreation.

Roxanne Dunn

Roxanne Dunn is a 2020 Slippery Rock University alumna and former pole vaulter on the SRU track and field team who was paralyzed from the waist down following a car accident that occurred a few months after she graduated.

In addition to a spinal cord injury, Dunn had severed intestines and a smashed orbital socket. She had four surgeries, three within 48 hours following the accident, along with a 53-day hospital stay in the intensive care, neurological and inpatient rehabilitation units. She spent three days on a ventilator and complications with the feeding tube that she used while hospitalized resulted in her relying on IVs and losing more than 30 pounds.

Now, three years later, Dunn is dealing with the aftermath of the life-altering moment with immense positivity and willpower. A graduate from SRU’s early childhood and special education program, Dunn is now a teacher at the Starlight School, a program for students with special needs that is managed by the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities in Ohio. She is walking with the help of a rolling walker after extensive therapy.

Earlier this year, the Dover, Ohio, native was presented the 2024 NCAA Inspiration Award during the NCAA Convention in Phoenix. The Inspiration Award is presented to a coach or administrator currently associated with intercollegiate athletics or to a current or former varsity letter winner at an NCAA school. It honors those who used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome a life-altering situation and become role models, giving hope and inspiration to others.

University Grand Marshal

Larry McCarthy

Larry McCarthy, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of accounting and assistant to the dean of the College of Business, is the University Grand Marshal.

Historically, the grand marshal led all processions and their role was to protect the president from harm. Today, the grand marshal serves in a ceremonial capacity to set the tone and pace for all formal University events.

As commencement grand marshal, McCarthy carries the University mace to the podium to indicate that a formal academic session is in order. The grand marshal who leads

SRU Medallion

Faculty and administrators with 25 or more years of service at Slippery Rock University are identified at major University academic events by a specially crafted medallion. The 3.5-inch medallions bear the words “Slippery Rock University - Founded in 1889” on the front, with the recipient’s name engraved on the back. The medallions, worn around the neck from a green-and-white ribbon, were crafted in bronze at the Wendell August Forge in Grove City.

SRU Mace

Slippery Rock University ceremonial occasions begin with the entrance of the University Mace, carried by the University Marshal. The mace symbolizes the University’s governing authority and is present only when the president and trustees are in attendance. It signifies the proceedings have official sanction.

The tradition of the mace derives from medieval times in England, when the mace was held by a bodyguard to protect dignitaries at ceremonial functions. The Slippery Rock University mace is used only at Freshman Convocation, Commencement and Inaugural ceremonies. As an ancient symbol of authority, it reminds us that universities are custodians both of the enduring traditions of learning and of the power they bestow upon those who come to learn. It is also a reminder that the learning process has not always been comfortable and easy.

The late Kenneth Thompson, a local artisan, handcrafted the University mace in 1973. The curly maple wood that was used for the mace was taken from a tree cut near Slippery Rock University. Considerable lathe work was required to obtain the elaborate shape and design in the wood. The brass figure adorning the head of the mace was taken from the original furnishings of Old Main during a period of renovation. The mace is on permanent display in the President’s Office in Old Main.

McCarthy has been a faculty member at SRU since 1985. He currently teaches accounting theory, nonprofit accounting, economics of social issues and accounting for mergers and acquisitions. His interests include small business, economic development of the region and veterans affairs. His research interests include the impact of shale gas on Pennsylvania’s economy and the availability and types of veterans services and support programs on American college campuses.

A lifelong resident of the area, he is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, an SRU alumnus, and earned his graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Gonfalons

The gonfalons – or college banners – add a wonderful element of color and pageantry to official ceremonies. The gonfalon is a long banner that is suspended from a crossbar. The name derives from medieval Italy, where “gonfaloni” was the name given to community meetings in Florence. Each neighborhood had its own flag and coat of arms and the word gonfalon eventually came to be associated with the flag. Each of the five colleges and Graduate Studies at Slippery Rock University has its own gonfalon. The “gonfalonieres” –or flag bearers – precede each college during the processional. The gonfalons are placed on the platform at the beginning of official ceremonies.

SRU Alumni Association Gift

The Slippery Rock University Alumni Association provides a zipper pull for every graduating student. The zipper pull should be attached to the zipper of the gown and worn during the commencement exercises. The zipper pull carries the official seal of the Alumni Association.

The seal depicts a view of Old Main, the oldest building on campus, surrounded by “Slippery Rock University Alumni Association.” The seal is green and white, representing the official colors of Slippery Rock University.

Rock Life is a four-year college-based program that provides an inclusive college experience for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities ages 18-26. Rock Life incorporates a combination of person-centered approaches that includes program specific coursework; auditing of selected SRU courses based on student interest; clubs and social organizations; on-campus housing; on-campus vocational opportunities; faculty advising; and peer coach support. Rock Life students who complete the four-year program receive a certificate of completion issued by SRU.

Honors College Graduates

The University Honors College offers students an opportunity to gain the most from their undergraduate careers. Students enrolled in the Honors College take 21 credit hours of special course work in limited enrollment classes that emphasize extensive reading, critical thinking, intensive writing and group discussion.

In order to earn recognition as Honor graduates, they must maintain a 3.25 grade-point average or higher and participate in various honors activities, including community service, leadership and extra curricular requirements. Honors graduates wear dark purple and silver cords.

Academic Regalia

The pageantry and dress of the academic procession have been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries where academic life began, first in the church then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the guild of the Master of Arts. The Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibilities.

Principal features of academic dress are the gown, the cap and the hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and the meaning of the academic dress. Two English universities, Oxford and Cambridge, are particularly noted for the development of the authentic costume, which has changed only slightly through the centuries.

The gown originated in the 12th century. While the flowing gown originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, today it has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. Gowns vary in the trimming and the design of the sleeves. The doctoral gown has velvet facings down the front and three velvet chevrons on the bell-shaped sleeves. These velvet trimmings may be black or the prescribed color of the academic area.

As the focal point of the University, the president wears a distinctive gown unique to Slippery Rock University. The distinctive feature of the presidential gown is the addition of the fourth chevron to each sleeve. This honor is granted only to one who holds the rank of president or chancellor of an academic institution. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves while the bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves. Neither has trimming. The bachelor’s gown is always worn closed; the master’s and doctoral gown may be worn open or closed.

When Roman law freed a slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship as well as responsibility and dignity. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The square black mortarboard with a black tassel is the recommended cap. Doctors may wear a velvet cap with a gold tassel. Tassels are worn over the left front corner after a degree has been conferred.

The hood identifies the level of the degree, the school that granted it and the academic area. The silk lining of the hood is the color or colors of the college or university, while the color of the edging of the hood represents the degree.

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) was established on July 1, 1983. However, the universities that comprise the State System have a much longer history. The mission of the System is as relevant today as it was at its founding: to provide high-quality education at the lowest possible cost to students; to increase educational attainment in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; to prepare students at the undergraduate and graduate levels for professional and personal success in their lives; and to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural development of Pennsylvania’s communities, the commonwealth, and the nation.

The universities combine to enroll the largest number of Pennsylvania residents among all four-year colleges and universities in the commonwealth. With 85,000 degree-seeking students and thousands more enrolled in certificate and other career-devel-

opment programs, the State System is vital to Pennsylvania’s economy. State System universities collectively offer more than 2,300 degree and certificate programs in more than 530 academic areas. The universities have nearly 800,000 living alumni, most of whom reside in Pennsylvania.

The State System recently redesigned itself to ensure the longterm sustainability of all universities so that each may continue to serve students, its region, and the commonwealth for decades to come. The State System universities are Pennsylvania Western University (California, Edinboro, Clarion) and Commonwealth (Bloomsburg, Mansfield and Lock Haven), Cheyney, East Stroudsburg, Indiana, Kutztown, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania.

The Department of Military Science (Army ROTC) provides a program of leadership development preparing college men and women for service as officers in the U.S. Army. After graduation, they serve as commissioned officers on Active Duty or in the Army Reserves or National Guard. These young men and women possess confidence, discipline, physical stamina, poise, and other attributes essential to leaders of character. They are prepared to serve the Nation or the Commonwealth. Since the first commissioning class in May 1984, the program has commissioned 501 officers.

Special Notes

A professional photographer will capture the moment when graduates receive their SRU diplomas. Ordering instructions for photos of the ceremony will be emailed to the graduates’ home by early July.

In order to avoid congestion, and as a way to maintain decorum for this prestigious ceremony, the University asks that family members and guests refrain from approaching the stage to photograph or videotape the ceremony. No photos will be allowed on the floor following the ceremony. To avoid obstructing the view for other guests, please do not bring balloons or large signs into Morrow Field House.

Individual presentation of diplomas takes time, but the recognition of each graduate has special significance for family members, friends and guests of the graduates. Everyone is requested to remain seated throughout the program to avoid disruption of the commencement activities.
