From the street the axial formality makes the building seem distant, imposing and inaccessible.

The symmetry and formality of the lawn also make the addition of new elements and objects difficult.

Design Concept: Create Three Distinct Spaces

+ lawn

+ garden

plaza

The primary design strategy is to insert a garden that mediates between the entry plaza and the formal lawn. This garden will accommodate memorials and artifacts and will extend the identity and program of the institution towards the street. Diversifying and distinguishing the various parts of the site can allow them to serve different functions and each have their own identity. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Create Three Distinct Spaces

Today the site has very little functionality for wheelchair bound visitors. The design strategy reorganizes the site to create three distinct spaces and to the degree possible makes the entire site accessible, including portions of the lawn, the new garden and the plaza. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Create Three Distinct Spaces Add new paths to create accessibility and reorganize the site into three distinct parts: 1. Expand the Plaza

Design Concept: Veterans’ Plaza Create an Accessible Entry Relocate Soldier & Sailor Statues

Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Veterans’ Plaza

Relocating the large Solider and Sailor Statues to some point along the Fifth Avenue edge would bring the identity of the building to the street. This in turn would create space for integrating new accessible ramps to the front door. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Veterans’ Plaza

The extent of the plaza can be expanded and smaller spaces, seating and entrances to the garden can be integrated into the plaza edge.

Design Concept: Memorial Garden

Rather than abandon the formal language of the site and building, our approach is to add to it. Formal Gardens: Vaux-le-Vicomte, France Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Memorial Garden

Hornbostle’s original landscape concept for the site used curving paths and plantings to define smaller areas Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Memorial Garden

Adding garden elements of curving paths and undulating plantings can create flexible and accommodating spaces to showcase memorials and artifacts while maintaining the formal integrity of the building and site. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Memorial Garden

This design strategy is also in keeping with the language of ornament in Hornbostel’s building.

This strategy is also informed by other examples from contemporary design.

Design Concept: Honor Lawn Create a single formal lawn space that can function for a variety of uses Create elements and spaces around the lawn to represent the 6 branches of service

Design Concept: Honor Lawn

Spaces and elements representing each service branch enforces the mission of Soldiers and Sailors to honor the service by active duty and veteran members from these branches. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: Honor Lawn

The consolidated lawn space can be used for informal seating and for organized events with the possibility of setting up a stage at the bottom. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

The transition from garden to lawn could have one or more terraces connecting it to the garden creating a natural seating area.

A grand stair could also be created to connect the garden to the lawn along the central axis.

Design Concept: New Identity Signage & Lighting A variety of opportunities exist for adding new identity signage and signature lighting elements.

Design Concept: New Identity Signage & Lighting

Kinetic Lighting - use lighting patterns to create flow and energy to the landscape.

Marking Lighting - use lighting for way finding or to create boundaries. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering

Design Concept: New Identity Signage & Lighting

Lighting as Object - use the luminaire itself as part of the visual experience.

Silhouette - use lighting to show form by shadow versus brightness. In shadow, forms take different meanings. Powerhouse Design | Studio for Spatial Practice | Lamm Engineering
