Academy will boost education potential Specialist supplier Sherriff Amenity has acknowledged the importance of BIGGA members to the wider industry by becoming the association’s latest education supporter.

Sherriff Amenity is the specialist amenity division of Agrovista UK and is host of the online Sherriff Amenity Academy, where members can now complete online courses and examinations, earning Continued Professional Development credits.

Hedge funds Hedges are often better than trees at soaking up air pollution among tall buildings, research has suggested.

A paper in the journal Atmospheric Environment says tall trees are good at absorbing pollution in more open areas. But hedges can trap toxins at exhaust pipe level, so reduce people’s direct exposure to harmful pollutants.

Lead author Prof Prashant Kumar said councils should try to plant low hedges between pedestrians and the street if pavements are wide enough. He and his partners in the EU and US are still researching the best pollution-busting plants, and the optimum height for the hedge.

They say the role of the hedge has been neglected, especially in city “canyons” where tall trees can in some circumstances trap pollution at street level.

But any gardener in a major city who has trimmed a privet hedge, for instance, will attest that it is full of dust and pollutants that the tight-knit foliage has filtered from the air.

Dr Kumar, of Surrey University said “The big thing about hedges is that they are right down at tailpipe level.

“The emissions from vehicles starts to dilute very quickly as you move away from the road - so any hedge that acts as a barrier slowing down the airflow and catching pollutants on the leaves is going to offer people in homes better protection.”

The paper comes as cash-strapped councils round the UK are starting to charge households for collecting green waste.

If this policy prompts people to remove their hedges to avoid the charges, it seems that the neighbourhood may suffer.

Gardens under threat An invasive species that could put UK gardens under threat has prompted an appeal by scientists.

The New Zealand Flatworm eats native earthworms - which are a vital part of healthy soil - but also has a slime that can cause skin rashes.

Accidentally introduced in the 1960s, it was first spotted in Scotland but has been moving south.

Flatworms can be found in shady places in gardens but also in the countryside.

The flatworms attack by wrapping themselves around the earthworm and secreting digestive mucus to dissolve them.

The flatworm is ribbon-flat, slimy, and pointed at both ends, growing up to 15cm long and 1cm wide, with purplishbrown on top with buff-coloured edge and a pale buff underside.

A Proven Biostimulant

Vitalnova Blade is a biostimulant for turf developed

by ICL to boost microbial activity and encourage better rooting, amongst other things.

It is a product that combines seaweed and carbohydrates to provide a readily available source of carbon together with a range of micronutrients, amino acids and bioactive molecules. Consequently, regular applications of Vitalnova Blade through the growing season have been independently proven to stimulate soil biology and plant growth to enhance the benefits of a conventional fertiliser programme.

Independent research for Vitalnova Blade has demonstrated an increase in soil borne microorganisms as well as improved rooting. Plots treated with Vitalnova Blade showed a doubling of indigenous mycorrhiza levels as well as up to a 50% increase in beneficial bacteria levels when compared with untreated control plots. Such increases in fungal and bacterial activity increase soil nutrient re-cycling to help release ‘locked-up’ nutrients and enhance growth.

Furthermore, the same trials showed a 40% increase in rootmass compared with the untreated control plots. With a greater rootmass the turf’s ability to take up nutrients and water is increased to give a stronger, healthier plant and minimise stress which leads to better pest and disease resistance. The small quantity of macronutrients included within Vitalnova Blade (5-6.5-3.5) also help to enhance the benefits of routine fertiliser inputs by supplying a direct source of readily available nutrients to support overall plant health.

Funding down, aesthetics up With research reporting widespread budget cuts, Reesink Turfcare looks at how to make that all-important budget go further without a drop in park appeal.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) found in its 2016 ‘State of the UK Public Parks’ report that 92 percent of park managers have had cuts made to their revenue budget over the last three years and 95 percent of park managers are anticipating cuts to their revenue budget over the next three years.

Edinburgh City Council has estimated that for every

£1 spent on green infrastructure around £12 of social, economic and environmental benefits are delivered through the community use of parks and green spaces. So with that kind of return on investment, Danny Lake, regional grounds manager at Reesink Turfcare, looks here at what groundsmen can do to ensure green land is maintained in the most efficient and cost effective way.

“The pressure to implement further cuts means that investment in good machinery is imperative for long term plans,” says Danny. “Traditionally lots of councils would use triple cylinder mowers, which provide the best cut and after-cut appearance, but can only cope with grass that is cut quite frequently – difficult during the spring and autumn growth. Councils are now cutting verges, parks and recreational areas less often in order to make savings and this has meant that many are moving to rotary mowers, which can cope with longer grass, less frequent cuts and are cheaper to maintain. This has partly solved the problem, but the finish a rotary mower leaves isn’t always aesthetically pleasing and can cause extra clean up work around paths where grass clippings and debris are left.”

Driving a Deere for dementia

HMP Kirkham prison officer Andy Maxfield from Inskip in Lancashire is aiming to break a six year old Guinness World Record by driving from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a John Deere lawn tractor, while raising money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Andy and his daughter Kathryn, who is a hairdresser at Leckonby Hair Studio in Great Eccleston, are planning to drive non-stop to break the record, which stands at four days and 23 hours. They will be using a standard 24hp X950R lawn tractor (less the rear collection system and mower deck) and support vehicles provided by John Deere. The X950R has cruise control and a top road speed of 10mph, and will also be equipped with a GPS tracker to qualify for the record.

The ‘Driving the Distance for Dementia’ Challenge is due to set off from John O’Groats at 10am on Tuesday 25th July 2017; the traditional distance by road to Land’s End is 874 miles. The planned route goes past the family home in Inskip, where Andy Maxfield spends much of his spare time cutting the grass in public open spaces around the village.

North West England: Embracing Diversity The North West England region encompasses an area of wide diversity, from the narrow lanes and boulder-strewn hillsides of Cumbria, and upland and urban Lancashire, to the gentler Cheshire landscape, and the busy conurbations of Greater Manchester and Merseyside Ffion Llwyd-Jones reports

T

he region’s landscapers reflect that diversity in their projects, which range from wildlife gardens and water features, outdoor kitchens, polished steel and powder-coated sculptures, reclaimed industrial elements, to landscaping for privately funded nursing homes, and large infrastructure projects. However, they also share common challenges: finding good employees, adjusting to a changing climate, and coping with an increasing amount of legislation.

DIVERSITY It’s the weather and narrow lanes, and ‘getting deliveries anywhere north of Manchester’ that first occur to Liz Newport from Buzy Lizzie Garden Design when asked about challenges. She counters that comment by remarking on the positive attributes of working with Cumbria’s diverse geology, scenery and properties. ‘Beautiful slate in the central lakes, granite in the middle, and amazing limestone pavements in the south,’ Liz comments. ‘Gardens often need to be in keeping with the landscape, so we use big boulders and create large water features, or rockeries – not the ‘70s rockery format – on a big scale. If you’re working on a property, it looks like it blends in.’

Liz also Liz Newport operates Wild Roof Landscapes, and offers clients both design and build. She adds: ‘We do a complete transformation, not just green roofs.

with planning.’ From a design perspective, Liz sees the trend for outdoor kitchens coming north. ‘It’s all the style for the Danish ‘hygge’ – being together and eating together,’ she says. ‘We’ve always done a lot of sheltered seating areas that are dug into the hillside, to get you out of the wind.’

WILDLIFE FRIENDLY Also based in Cumbria, Bea Ray of her eponymous garden design company, Bea Ray Gardens, comments on the area’s challenging climate, adding it makes sense to bear in mind what materials and plants are available locally, who can supply them, and what works well in Cumbria.

Like Liz, she finds Cumbria is an inspiring place to do garden design. ‘I always enjoy trying to link a design with views from garden to the countryside, and bringing in a naturalistic feel where possible,’ Bea says. ‘The county has a range of diverse climates, and rainfall can vary Buzy Lizzie: Garden banner

Bea also makes her designs as wildlife friendly as possible, including nectar-rich plants for bees and butterflies, food and water for birds, and insect homes.

EXPECTATIONS From its head office in Lancashire, Glendale Services’ clients are under increasing budgetary pressures, creating a challenge to match their requirements with their customer’s expectations, according to Simon Smith, Glendale’s Regional Manager for the North. He adds that health & safety, and legislative requirements, and working with various utilities can lead to the hard elements of any scheme outweighing the soft elements.

‘Often, the benefit (i.e. the tree) is actually a small element of what has to be delivered,’ comments Simon. ‘In rural areas, there’s probably less reliance on the harder

elements – you can use planted materials to deliver a job, whereas you might have to put up a fence in an urban area.’

SCULPTURES Based in Cheshire, Alexandra Froggatt of Alexandra Froggatt Design often combines sculptural elements and planting in her designs; recent large projects include polished steel and powder-coated sculptures, and bespoke water features. She is also a distributor for the tree-box living wall system – her ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ design won a Gold Award at the RHS London Plant and Design Show 2012. And she is creating a rural retreat for the local children’s hospice charity, with woodland walks,

fragrant planting, and soft grasses. ‘There is a lot of clay on the site,’ she adds. ‘And it’s shaded, so there’s a limited colour palette, and the idea is to introduce colour, and we also add bird houses and animal runs.’

Concurring with Bea Ray, she also sees a definite trend towards wildlife and beefriendly gardens: ‘To encourage children to get out more, and explore, and clients request interesting decorative items to attract wildlife, such as insect hotels.’

PERSONALITY In keeping with a general trend in the North West, Jane Bingham of The Cheshire Garden comments: ‘This year has been the busiest yet, with a massive increase in people wanting to have their gardens designed and landscaped.’

Jane likes to get a good idea of client’s personality, and reflect it in their garden design. ‘For example, one client initially wanted to keep the lawn and be low-key, but as the relationship developed, he got increasingly excited about my design, and now we’ve completely dispensed with the lawn, and he wants his garden to be different, and the people who come to visit it to say: Wow! That’s really different. So it’s developed as it’s gone along.’

In addition to doing a show garden at Tatton Park Show, Jane is creating a conceptual garden for MidCheshire Hospitals charity, which tells the story of dementia from first diagnosis to requiring 24-hour care: ‘We’ve done that through structures within the garden and the planting. It’s an exciting project, and we help a really good cause at the same time!’

INFRASTRUCTURE Chris Whittingham, commercial director at Hultons Landscapes (with offices in the North West and Midlands) also notes optimism in the North West region. He comments on the momentum behind it since the government moved on some of the Northern powerhouse initiatives. ‘We’ve seen a lot of promise with the investment into the infrastructure, which is now being realised,’ he adds. ‘In Manchester, and in terms of construction, not just landscaping, there are big economic indicators for us that are strong across the construction industry.’

Chris comments the company has grown from £3 million to £12 million in just under two years, opened an office in the Midlands, and acquired North Wales-based Wright Landscapes in October 2016. In addition, Hultons Landscapes has been appointed to deliver £1.5 million worth of landscaping works for Manchester’s new Ordsall Chord.

Current challenges include the recruitment of people: ‘Getting great staff who want to work in the industry is tough. Hultons is trying to get young people into the industry, so we have five apprenticeships, and have good relationships with the local horticultural college.’ Chris remarks that Manchester nearly doubled its residential projects between 2011 - 2014, and adds that keeping a stable network of subcontractors is a tough challenge in a buoyant market.

SOURCING Based in the urban areas of Greater Manchester, Hahn Plastics sees an increase in the specification and application of recycled materials. ‘It’s hugely satisfying for us that the messages – to reduce the amount of recyclable waste going to landfill, as well the reduction in carbon emissions associated with the creation of virgin materials – is

A recent challenge is adapting to increased specifications in tree planting, in particular with the tree-pit detail. ‘Many years ago, you would dig a hole, put in top soil and plant the tree,’ he comments. ‘Commercial developments are employing intricate tree pit systems, involving structural ground retention units, irrigation systems, root protection barriers, and air vents to the tree pit. We’ve become skilled, and I believe it’s something that every landscaper will have to adapt to. It’s fascinating that the tree pit can cost four to five times more than the actual cost of the tree; a tree pit can cost anywhere between £3,000 to £5,000, while the tree is more in the £500 - £600 range.’

‘I believe the privately funded retirement home market is going to expand massively,’ he adds. ‘Landscapers need to be aware of that and the workload.’

RECYCLING Despite being based in the urban area on Greater Manchester, David Keegan of David Keegan Garden Design says his design approach is affected by the wider landscape of the North West. ‘I try to use as many materials as I possibly can that you would find in the natural landscape,’ he says. ‘Recycled materials and sustainability is a big part of that. I use big boulders, and the limestone that was used

so extensively by the Edwardians that there’s an abundance of it. Nobody’s using it, and it’s being dumped into skips, which is such a shame. So, I create a ‘forest garden’, where we re-use the limestone to create banks and planting beds, so the planting areas are less formal and less structured.’

He also takes on longer projects, sometimes up to five years, with clients who are understanding and open, and

planting, and canal-side plants. I like to use reclaimed railway sleepers, and metal – especially in planters – using quite brutal materials and softening them with plantings, or using them in a fashion that makes them softer, so maybe using a girder for a bench in a sunny spot in the garden, where it becomes quite a nice, cool place to sit.’

Most of Lee’s work is town-based, and he designs with zones to break up space to make it multi-purpose. He notes clients want spaces to be more child friendly, and sometimes

realise some of the plantings may be experimental, and the associated risks.

For David, challenges include climate change, and the resultant change in gardening approach: ‘We seem to go through periods of relentless rainfall, which affects drainage, so we have to take a slightly different approach in designing spaces and take into account potential flooding.’

He gets enquiries from people with water-logged lawns, which were previously pretty much problem-free. ‘Then we have periods of no proper rain for three to four weeks, so the weather is getting more extremes, although we’re not getting the cold either, so insects problems are increasing and not being knocked back. The way we garden, and the approach is changing.’

that means a ‘grown-up’ serious space, but with the function of it being suitable for children. ‘In the past, people thought a garden for children meant a bit of turf, and a swing set, and then you wait until they grow up before you have your garden,’ he says. ‘So, I give them the adult area and the children’s area. I’ve also been doing that for clients with dogs – so dog-friendly gardens, with non-toxic artistic planting, suitable for dogs, and quite robust. I’m trying to blend the beautiful with the functional.’

He is also seeing clients’ increasing acceptance of the seasonality of gardening: ‘People are happy to see the cycle of plants growing, flowering die back, and returning as opposed to evergreens. People are more adventurous with the plantings, and bees and butterflies – and aware the impact a garden can have on their own well-being.’

While challenges and diverse opportunities abound in the North West, they are more than adequately matched by the industry professionals who chose to work – and thrive – in this wide-ranging region.

ZONES In Merseyside, Garden Ninja’s Lee Burkhill is inspired by clients coming to him and saying they don’t know what to do, or their garden looks a mess: ‘I like to storm through and design something that meets their requirements and looks nice as well.’

He comments that a show garden he did in 2016 was quite industrial, and a ‘feel-good’ garden: ‘It was a fun garden you could sit in, with Manchester as its inspiration. So, industrial elements softened with prairie

Lights to Enhance – Day or Night Garden Lights can be attractive in their own right. Martin Bennett reports Many people regard outdoor lighting as an aspect of the garden that is best not noticed until they are in use once darkness falls. The large quantity of lower cost and mass produced lighting has influenced this theory; that lights should be purely functional rather than attractive in their own right.

There are, however, many light fixtures that blend in fabulously with the garden landscape at night as well as significantly enhance it during daylight hours. Brass and Copper lights are an excellent example of this, with Brass Steplights, Spotlights and Spreadlights providing a specific function once illuminated while also looking beautiful as part of the garden. Copper is also a great material which has a fantastic decorative quality. After a while, Copper will oxidise to change colour, to really look as if they have always been in the garden - as much an ornament as a light.

Copper wall and spotlights are also available in matching styles to the familiar Spike spotlight design, and will give an authentic, elegant, and classy look to any exterior wall.

Various new products such as Rock and Stone Globe lights are designed specially to add to the garden scene, blending in well on gravel pathways and rockeries when not lit. A new product just introduced to the lighting market is the Airlite Path/Bollard light. Etesia UK has announced the launch of the Bahia Joyride – a ride-on mower controlled by a joystick or via GPS for autonomous operation.

Working in partnership with FeBroLift GmbH, the Bahia Joyride is operated exclusively by a joystick: some of its features, such as automatic emptying of the grass box (optional) or start/ stop of the machine and cutting deck controls are all controlled from the central joystick control unit.

The joystick control can be installed on the right or left hand side of the machine ensuring that the ride-on mower can be used by people with reduced mobility and also by experienced professionals.

Les Malin, operations director of Etesia UK explains: “We started from a standard Bahia with a Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki or Honda engine on which we installed a joystick control as well as a servo motor for the steering and another servomotor for the forward drive, which enables users to control the machine with a simple joystick with all the controls within easy reach: blade clutch, initialisation to start and authorisation of mowing in reverse.”

The functions are simple: • A steering control to go left or right; • A steering control to go forward or backward; • Starting the blades is located at the front of the joystick with a short press to turn on or off; • An initialization button to calibrate the joystick when the

• Mowing permission in reverse, to force the blades into operation when moving backwards with the machine.

he Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has awarded 73 RHS Gold Medals at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments.

A total of 117 medals were awarded to the gardens and floral exhibitors in the Great Pavilion, which also included 30 Silver-Gilt Medals, 13 Silver Medals and one Bronze Medal.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show sponsors’ The M&G Garden was awarded their 7th Gold Medal and scooped Best Show Garden. Showcasing ecological sustainability based on the unique environment of Malta, the garden designed by James Basson also received the coveted Best Construction Award making it the second year running for contractors Crocus.

James Basson, The M&G Garden designer says: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won Best in Show for the first time at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It is an incredible feeling and a testimony to the hard work of the whole team, including Crocus and my wife Helen, and I am very grateful to M&G for its support.”

A total of 61 Gold Medals were awarded to nurseries and growers at the heart of the show in the Great Pavilion, without any Bronze medals in sight. The Diamond Jubilee Award for the best display was presented to Penberth Plants for their ‘A reflection of Penberth – A Cornish Garden’ and New Design Award was given to Raymond Evison Clematis. The South African National Biodiversity Institute – Kirstenbosch stand received the popular President’s Award, while David Austin Roses Ltd, Cayeux Iris and Waterside Nursery were among the Gold Medal winners.

The 2017 updating tour!

Over the last two months, the Amenity Forum has been on tour across the UK holding some 13 free events aiming to update those involved in the amenity sector of current issues and matters related to weed, pest and disease control. John Moverley, chairman of the Amenity Forum writes Some 450 people attended in total and the topics discussed were wide ranging. However each demonstrated the important and essential nature of weed, pest and disease control impacting upon every UK citizen in terms of creating safe, healthy and fit for purpose amenity areas.

The launch of the website www.GetBritainMoving.uk was widely well received, emphasising as it does the important role of amenity in society. Just one example recently was to those who watched the FA Cup semi-finals played on an excellent pitch. We take this quality too often for granted but it would not happen without the dedication and actions of those who maintain such surfaces.

We are in the grip of both local and national elections â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a good time to emphasise to those seeking office, how important amenity is to us all and that maintenance of our streets, pavements, railways and more is so vitally important.

We should also not miss the opportunity to emphasise that decisions need to be based upon science and evidence,

not just opinion. We still see headlines about methods of weed control which do not have such evidence checking.

Approved professionals engaged in the amenity sector, certainly those who are members of the Amenity Forum, always put health and safety at the top of their list in terms of choosing the appropriate methods of weed, pest and disease management.

It was certainly quite hectic to visit so many locations in such a short time but equally it was inspiring. It was great to see so many elements of our vital sector represented and to talk to those directly engaged in the activities. Whether in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales or the regions of England, this stood out loud and proud. We do need to communicate this even more widely to all.

What is undertaken is vital and important and impacts upon everyone.

The Forum will continue to engage in discussions and events throughout the summer and on October 12th, will hold its annual conference and exhibition at the Pirelli Stadium at Burton on Trent, now regarded as a must attend event for anyone involved in or with an interest in weed, pest and disease control and amenity. A safer cut Working in built-up areas can present hazards when cutting close to bystanders, cars or buildings. It only takes a few stones or loose objects to get thrown into the air and there is the potential of damage to property or even a risk to safety.

The new Makita DUR187 18v LXT linetrimmer has a 240watt output Brushless motor in the trimmer head, providing capacity to run the head at three selectable speed settings up to 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000rpm. RENAULT Renault will join be entering the lucrative pickup truck market with the all-new Alaskan. The Navara-based pickup took centre stage on the Renault stand, but the French manufacturer has been forced to push the sale date back to the first quarter of 2018, due to supply issues at Nissan’s Barcelona factory.

TOYOTA The Japanese manufacturer launched the eighth generation of its globally renowned pickup, the Hilux, last year. Since it went on sale, the Hilux has been available as a single, extended and double cab, but Toyota was keen to exhibit its new tipper as part of its ‘Trade Plus’ conversion program.

SSANGYONG As well as recently taking on the DFSK franchise for the UK, SsangYong was boasting about the new upgraded towing capacity on its pickup. The Musso can now tow up to 3.5t thanks to the recently upgraded chassis and brakes, and the more powerful 2.2-litre e-XDi engine with 178bhp and 400Nm.

VOLKSWAGEN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES While the all-new Volkswagen Crafter van has been on sale for a couple of months, chassis cab derivatives are not yet available but the German manufacturer gave us a taster of what to expect at the CV Show. On the stand was a crew cab Crafter with a factory-built dropside body, with a payload of around 800kg for the 3.5t model.

Planting the future CONFOR has delivered a five-point forestry action plan to create rural jobs, tackle climate change, build new homes and protect wildlife in its manifesto for the UK Government election.

The document - called Planting The Future - calls on the new government to: PLANT MORE TREES: At least 5000 hectares of annual planting is needed in England, when barely 500 hectares has been achieved in each of the last two years. At least half of new planting must be productive species.

TAKE THE FORESTRY COMMISSION BACK TO ITS ROOTS: The Forestry Commission should be given full responsibility for planting targets, as well as woodland creation applications and funding.

APPOINT A MINISTER TO STAND UP FORESTRY: We need a minister with forestry in their title, to press the importance of a £2 billion sector in the industrial strategy and after Brexit,

and to champion home-grown timber.

CUT RED TAPE: England should follow Scotland’s example and appoint a planning expert to identify the bureaucratic barriers to new woodland creation.

ENSURE FAIR TREATMENT FOR FORESTRY: Government agencies and politicians must give equal treatment to a £2 billion sector employing 80,000 people, which offers multiple social and environmental benefits.

Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, said: “We have outlined a positive, straightforward and achievable vision for the next parliament.

“We have highlighted planting more trees as our top priority as it underpins everything else. The record of planting in England in the last two years has been very disappointing, but the new government starts with a clean slate.”

Mr Goodall said the fifth point in the manifesto, fair treatment for forestry, was crucial.

He said: “Explaining the true story of modern forestry remains a high priority for Confor. Mixed, modern forestry can provide rural jobs and a timber supply to underpin a £2 billion industry supporting 80,000 jobs - but it can also deliver a range of environmental and social benefits.

Future cities?

Believe in better The landscaping industry will be busy for the next hundred years – our present cities and towns will have to be greener and many more will have to be built.

Carol Dutton looks to the future

W

hatever the future of Ebbsfleet, (hailed as the first new garden city for over 100 years), or that of the 14 new villages and towns announced by the government in January, it’s a safe assumption that in order to meet present and future housing needs new cities will have to be built. But what can we expect, encourage and implement to protect both citizens and the environment?

Nilufer Danis of Lotus Design Studio expects future cities to be sustainable with adequate SUDS, permeable paved areas and planting that enhances the natural habitat. “There should be a mix of native planting in woodland areas to feed insects and provide them with a natural habitat, ponds with plants that will clear the water and large, semi mature trees such as London Beech to reduce global warming and tackle pollution,” she says. Nilufer, whose award winning ‘Green Oasis Garden’ utilized rain water from it’s green roof to irrigate fruit trees wants to encourage people to grow their own by providing allotments and city farms. Provision for all these amenities needs space which means housing a large proportion of the population in tall buildings. “People are fearful about living in high buildings,” she continues.

“Perhaps one of our biggest challenges as landscapers is to make high rise living attractive. We should landscape every part of the building creating green terraces, gardens and balconies and provide adequate communal space to combat isolation and loneliness.”

“I defy anybody to say that it’s not possible to do this within a high density urban development” says James Lord, a partner in landscape design with H.T.A. Design, who created the scheme for Saffron Square in Croydon, a development providing 755 residential units of mixed tenure, including a 45 storey high rise apartment block, commercial floor space and a new public square on a site less than an acre. Extensive roof gardens and terraces abound. Regarding future cities, James is in favour of phasing out the use of private cars.

“Have we reached peak car ownership?” he asks. “We have the potential to use driverless car technology and encourage walking and cycle ownership. If we can begin to steal back roads from private cars there will be more space for homes and children will be able to play in front of them. Perhaps one of our biggest challenges as landscapers is to make high rise living attractive Fenella Griffin, the landscape architect arm of Untitled Practice would like to see commercial traffic restricted by way of communal deliveries. “I’ve heard of an area where all the businesses get together and order collectively so that one vehicle serves them all,” she says. “If we can get over our expectations of ‘next day delivery’ this system could help towards cleaner cities.”

Once deliveries are made by location commercial vehicles could access the city under ground using lift shafts to deposit goods in the right area. These could then be collected above ground. Similarly waste, both for recycling and landfill could be disposed of via shafts leading to underground bins, ready

“I think we’ll be seeing more green industries as businesses on the high street work out what to do with their waste,” Fenella continues. “One company is already producing fuel for stoves out of used coffee grounds.”

Fenella would like a cleaner more joined-up city and one that preferably produces a lot of its own food. “A high proportion of food for Vienna comes from a small radius outside the city which prevents flying in vegetables,” she affirms. Like Nilufer Fenella is in favour of allotments and also toys with the possibility of urban agriculture in the form of market gardens and orchards. She cites Frinberg in Sweden as an example of a place that has urban forests fanning out like green fingers, acting as lungs for the city.

This would be a situation to gladden the heart of David Elliot, Chief Executive of the charity ‘Trees for Cities’. “In my model city every person would be able to see a tree from their window,” he says. “At the moment many of those we do have are under threat from developers, pests and diseases.

which makes them over 100 years old and we don’t know how long they’ll last.” David would like to see every school involved with gardening and food creation. “It’s critical that kids understand nature. We do orchard projects and woodland projects, the biggest to date planting 20,000 trees in Ealing. Everybody needs access to high quality woodland.”

It seems that our ancestors did other things right as well as planting the London Plane trees. “I’ve been here for 10 years now and often the challenge is to take an area back to find out what makes the project special,” says James Spencer, an Associate with Glen Howells Architects. “We still use The Bournville and Moor Pool Estates in Harborne, Birmingham with their quality of building and surrounding spaces as benchmarks for the success of a place. The Bournville Estate was built by the owners of the Bournville Cadbury factory to house their workers, in reaction to the living conditions within the inner city slums. There was a real movement of people trying to do the right thing.” At the outset of a project Glenn Howells considers five key elements, density, quality (of materials and spaces), a healthy mix of population, context and the creation of a sense of identity. “People need to define where they live,” he explains. City Island scheme provides 1,706 apartments built on a 4.7 hectare former brown field site between the river Lea and the Thames. Although the area is a peninsular which helps identify it, it is the brightly coloured construction materials that set it apart from the surrounding sea of grey skyscrapers. “We used different coloured bricks for each building so that although each one is different there is cohessian throughout the scheme” James explains. Winning the 2017 Mayor of London planning award for ‘best new place to live’ the London City Island scheme weaves together a network of apartments, connecting walkways, open spaces and resident’s membership facilities including a clubhouse, screening room, spa and pools.

James can see a positive future for the ‘high street’. “I can see the high street coming back,” he says. “Although it’s been hit by both supermarkets and on-line shopping we still want the independents. Pop up businesses allow small firms to be flexible in how they operate. Perhaps they’ve started operating on line and now want retail space for a limited time to judge reaction. They can overlap craft and farmers markets and they have the advantage of not being branded.

In this way the high streets can flourish.”

Fenella Griffin is also concerned about the social aspect of our cities and cites the Coin Street Co-operative on London’s south bank as an alternative model of regeneration which helps the homeless and unemployed. “Everybody has a decent home and a collective garden” she says. “They have created a conference centre which is let out to raise money and a successful restaurant.” The Coin Street Community Builders is a social enterprise established by local residents as long ago as 1984, following a campaign against large scale office proposals. Since it’s inception it has transformed a largely derelict 13 acre site which includes the old Oxo building into new co-operative homes, shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes, bars, a park and riverside walkway plus sports facilities. Coin Street, whose board members are all local residents, also offers employment opportunities and advice and support to local families.

Although we may not have all the answers to create the perfect city, the will to keep the best of the old, discard the worst of the present and embrace new technology and living patterns, bodes well for a more fertile future. As James Spencer says, “people come first and we want them to spend their whole lives living in the inner city, not just a few years when they’re starting out.”

“I have seen my own high street in North London change dramatically over the last five years,” says Mary Bowman, a partner at landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman. “Small shop owners have created a destination with a fantastic fishmonger, butcher and bakery. A fresh fruit and vegetable vender with a huge variety of produce is a favourite local shop despite a Sainsbury’s further down the road.” With a DIY shop, gym, yoga studio and beauty salon trading alongside vendors of African products plus restaurants and dress shops, it is an important social hub.

“Though the social space of the street is not much more than a narrow pavement it is a vital space for a diverse community,” Mary maintains. For Gustafson Porter + Brown public spaces are fundamental social spaces, and these include streets, courtyards and plazas as well as parks and ‘the high street.’ The practice has designed a new courtyard garden at Rathbone Square just off Oxford Street, to act as an oasis in the heart of the city. Accessed by pedestrian links and mews passages leading from the ‘lively quarter’ of Fitzrovia and Charlotte Street the central garden with raised

A previous award winner back in 2012, Nathan has created a wonderful outdoor dining area out of a modest space. Living screens create an air of mystery Chris Myers’ Gold Medal winning show garden at this year’s RHS Cardiff Flower Show has wowed the crowds in Wales by utilising the local myth of Blodeuwedd as his inspiration. Fourteen of Green-tech’s homegrown, living screens were installed within the perimeter of the design providing a lush ivy backdrop to the show garden.

Chris has spent months working on his RHS Cardiff designs and after seeing the screens growing in his native home of Yorkshire was keen to incorporate them into his garden. The garden, inspired by the legend of Blodeuwedd, who was a woman created from flowers to be the wife of the hero Lleu, Chris’ woodland and water garden incorporates elements of the couple’s fateful story.

The Hedera helix ‘Woerner’ is carefully woven into the mesh screens to provide even coverage and supplemented by additional fertiliser to enhance the lush green appearance.

Different elements of the local myth are represented in the garden. A thatched canopy above a bath marks the scene of the attempted murder. Since Lleu did not die, blossom and wild flowers bloom along the banks of the river and the sculpture of an owl looks on. The living screens provide an enclosed backdrop to provide atmosphere and the representation of the solitary woods where Lleu thwarted death.

The importance of plants Tucked away beside the Thames, Chelsea Physic Garden is a celebration of the beauty and importance of plants.

Founded in 1673 it is one of London’s oldest botanic gardens and contains a unique living collection of around 5,000 different edible, useful, medicinal and historical plants within its sheltering walls.

Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673, as the Apothecaries’ Garden, with the purpose of training apprentices in the identification and use of medicinal plants.

The location was chosen due to its proximity to the River Thames. This allowed the Apothecaries to moor their barge, collect plants in the surrounding areas and take advantage of the river’s warm air currents, which contribute to the Garden’s unique microclimate. River access also allowed plants arriving from around the World to be introduced to the British Isles via the Garden. Its international reputation was established early on as a result of the global seed exchange scheme, known as Index Seminum, which it initiated in the 1700’s and continues to this day.

During the 1680’s trainee physician Hans Sloane studied at the Garden. He later become its primary benefactor when he purchased the Manor of Chelsea from Charles Cheyne and leased the Garden to the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London for just £5 a year in perpetuity.

Under a number of notable Curators, such as Robert Fortune and Thomas Moore, the Garden has adapted to the changing times, whilst always retaining its medicinal plant collection.

Different growing environments have been established such as the Grade II listed Pond Rockery, Fortune’s Tank Pond and an evolving collection of Glasshouses including one of the first heated greenhouses in the World. The Pond Rockery, which was completed in 1773, is the oldest planted structure of its type in Europe and employs Icelandic lava (brought to the Garden

by Sir Joseph Banks in 1772 on a ship named St. Lawrence) and carved stones from the Tower of London.

The Garden has also had a wide impact around the World, playing a key role in introducing the rubber industry to Malaysia and cotton to the Southern US. Perhaps most significant was the establishment of the tea industry in India. This was as a result of tea seedlings being transported from China to India by Robert Fortune in the newly developed Wardian cases (a type of portable glasshouse).

By the end of the 19th century the Apothecaries decided they could no longer retain the Garden. As a result the City Parochial Foundation took over running the site until 1983, when it became a registered charity and its gates were opened to the public for the first time.

Chelsea Physic Garden continues to play a significant role in education, running a range of courses for adults and activities for over 5000 school children a year. Strong demand Derbyshire floral features company Plantscape has reported strong demand from councils across the UK after it began the mammoth task of preparing 12,000 planters for the summer.

The company, in Hulland Ward, near Ashbourne, is the country’s leading supplier of floral features, including hanging baskets and multi-tier floor-standing planters, to local authorities and business improvement districts all over the UK. Last year it was acquired by landscape services, estate management and play space services providers TCL Group and, following the acquisition, Plantscape has begun to access markets already served by the Group’s other companies, including Burleys and TCL, alongside its traditional parish, town and city council customers.

It has already agreed deals with a number of facilities management companies working with shopping centres and pubs up and down the country and more opportunities are in the pipeline, in addition to healthy orders from

Plantscape began its planting up operation three weeks ago, having added an extra 500sqm to its 30,000sqm growing space over the winter to meet extra demand. It estimates that it will plant some 300,000 individual plug plants over the next month and will start to deliver its displays at the beginning of June.

Richard Webster, group operations support manager for TCL, said: “Once again, we are experiencing strong demand from local authorities and business improvement districts but we are delighted to have extended our service to other sectors, namely retail and leisure, through our growing working relationship with TCL Group’s other companies.

“It all points to a busy summer ahead for everyone at Plantscape, from our sales executives to our road crews and planting teams, who are currently busy creating our displays in our greenhouses ready for when they will be delivered in early June.”

New species Almost 2,000 new species of plant have been discovered in the past year, according to a report by The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Many have potential as food crops, medicines or sources of timber.

However, scientists say some of the newly-discovered plants are already at risk of extinction.

They are developing new ways to speed up the discovery and classification of plants to help safeguard them for future generations.

The second annual assessment of the State of the World’s Plants by scientists at Kew found that 1,730 plants were recorded as being new to science in 2016.

They include 11 new species from Brazil of the Manihot shrub known for its starchy root, cassava.

Seven species of the South African plant best known for red bush or rooibos tea were discovered, of which six are already threatened with extinction.

Other discoveries include new relatives of Aloe Vera, widely used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

The report found that more than 28,000 plant species are now recorded as having medicinal uses and new climbing vines from Borneo and Ecuador may add to the list, being relatives of plants already grown to produce treatments for Parkinson’s disease.

Dear Fans, As you can see I’m back - that was due to the millions of e-mails that flooded into Kim Jon Curtz computer as soon as the last issue came out with my page redacted.

Here is the story. After reading my copy he went completely mad and sacked me! Due to your protest e-mails, and a sharp phone call from my mother, who really is a bloody difficult woman, he was forced to re-instate me.

The office will be relaxed for a while as our leader is heading off to The Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court and Dublin’s Bloom 2017.

Junior has also decided that his four hour working day was a bit too stressful so he’s jetted off to a much warmer climate to recuperate.

Even though most of us would be happy to have a spare £25 I’m delighted had ExConservative PM David Cameron had a spare £25,000 to purchase that beautiful garden shed. After all he did such a good job, he gave us a strong and stable government - not a hint of chaos.

I would like to suggest however that he should have opted for a more robust construction. When the people of England are confronted with a massive rise in taxation in order to pay £100 billion to leave the EU without the help of a newly independent Scotland and Northern Ireland – they will be bloody angry.

The construction (right) should fit the bill, fire, flood and mob resistant. It’s very roomy so he could offer sanctuary to his best pal Boris.

They should be able to come out in 2055. It’s certainly not pretty but I would be willing to help advise on how to establish some interesting vertical planting.

A recent survey has suggested that an impressive garden is the biggest property turn on for home buyers. The survey of 1200 UK residents revealed that 60% of us would be most swayed by an impressive garden when buying a home. After a garden, a kitchen was cited as one of the most important features we consider when purchasing a property. I hate kitchens. A room full of very expensive wooden boxes with fancy handles.

Oscar Wilde described fox hunting as “the unspeakable chasing the uneatable” – a sentiment that, 12 years after the Hunting Act came into force, continues to reflect the views of British public, 84 per cent of whom find the idea of frightened foxes being torn to shreds by packs of hounds deeply offensive. It’s hard to believe Theresa is going to let the dogs loose again.

There is a strong case however for a Richmond hunt as urban foxes are picking up and ripping more rubbish sacks than the local council. Instead of horses we could make good use of all the 4x4’s that are used to ferry the children to school.
