SWIMMING IN INSPIRATIONS Stately American homes have been adorned by swimming pools since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The earliest in-ground pools were sometimes dug around existing ponds or “swimming holes” and often took simple geometric shapes like rectangles, circles, or ovals. But in the 1950s, with the emerging Golden Age of the motion picture industry, more and more Americans began making their swimming pools more romantic and fanciful, with statuary, water features, and floral landscaping to mimic what they saw in scenes from Hollywood movies and photos of their favorite stars’ homes.

Luxurious design trends in pools continue to take their inspiration from imaginative sources. Today, rather than from celebrities, the origins of many trends in pools come from resorts and travel sites in far-flung corners of the world. Tom Threlkeld, president of Nassau Pools Construction in Naples, Florida, reveals that residential architectural design trends are increasingly reflected in pool designs. “Like the latest luxury properties, pools are trending toward a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic. Rectilinear profiles are outpacing the freeform styles now.” “International resort destinations still drive cutting-edge upgrades,” adds Tim Grey of G2 Studios and G2 Aquatics in Naples. “Americans with the means to travel to the world’s most exotic places are inspired by the materials, the intricate artistry and the visual impact of the pools they see and want to emulate those details in their own backyards.”

What’s happening in pool design is ubermodern, leveraging technology advances to achieve that elusive “Wow” factor. Take for example, the infinity edge. “Also called a “negative edge,” Threlkeld explains, “it creates the illusion that water in the pool continues endlessly into its backdrop, many times a nearby body of water. In fact, customers with pools on the water usually expect a negative edge.” Top designers and water shapers are pushing the envelope even further, incorporating 360-degree perimeter over­ flows. According to Grey, “The beauty of this feature is that the pool water and deck are on the same plane, allowing the water to appear that it’s overflowing, but magically vanishes.” This detail requires a talented builder and engineer to execute it properly. Adding drama to overflowing water is fire. Fire bowls have become such a hot pool adornment that there are already many mass-produced, ready-to-install models that can be plugged into any pool project.

However, a custom-designed fire feature will make jaws drop, expertly transforming an understated pool design into an unforgettable experience. Water and fire combine to make hot water; in pool terms, a spa! New trends in spas are all comfort-centric, like arm rests, sloped backrests, and custom jet configurations. They are also getting more comfortable—getting in and out of the pool vis-à-vis a sun shelf or walk-in entry sloped like a beach sliding gently into a sea. On the higher end, the sun shelf, that first broad extended step, is customized with tile and water bubble features. Speaking of tile, it is the focus of one of the most dazzling and visually stunning trends of all—tiling the entire interior surface of the pool. Typically, this type of intricate adornment is done with smaller mosaic tiles, whether glass or porcelain. According to the experts, “to be properly built with artistry and enduring appeal requires a high level of detail and quality control”. JohnRWood.com

No longer are pool owners limited to the traditional 6” ceramic tile and 4”x 9” brick coping. There are endless options for the waterline tile and larger format stone coping. In fact, any tile an interior designer uses inside the home can be either used or simulated in the pool area. Glass tile has become a huge trend within the industry that can make a significant impact to the simplest of projects. Both Grey and Threlkeld recommend that you choose tile carefully. The market is flooded with inferior glass tile that can cause significant issues down the road. Also, turn to a pool design professional for installation. Even the best materials can deteriorate if improperly installed—and within a short time. Grey says, “I have seen significant maintenance issues arise on tile installations that are less than two years old.”

Threlkeld sums up that “trends in pool design have a lot to do with personal taste and preferences. Geometric shapes remain popular as homeowners express a strong desire to blend outdoor and indoor spaces visually.” Pool designers with experience in landscape architecture are uniquely capable of drawing on the architecture of the home to blur the division between interior and exterior spaces. Carrying a tile or mosaic motif from the great room out to the pool deck is yet another way to integrate the outdoors with the indoors.


Grey concludes, “The perfect pool design not only fits with the home design but with also with the backdrop it overlooks, whether a coastline, golf course, marina, preserve, or neighboring homes and properties. Surroundings often spark ideas and can even simplify the pool design. Water features can be used to enhance an existing view or to mask an unwanted view. Waterfalls and similar designs can provide audible white noise to help buffer outdoor living space from adjacent property noise or to simply add a peaceful and tranquil setting to the space.” Properly performed, and taking advantage of the latest trends and technologies, any client—with the collaboration of a talented, experienced pool designer and engineer—can achieve world-class results that will heighten the mood, personality, and resale value of their homes.
