National television and radio broadcasting were formerly controlled by the central government. During this time, politicians often abused the media by using it for their own political purposes. This problem has helped to increase the flow of information now available from other television stations that are broadcast from satellites. Starting in the early 1990s, India gained access to programming that includes the international version of CNN, an Indian version of MTV, and other programming from Western nations. TRADE India has many trading partners including both the United States and Russia. The European Union and Japan have recently become important trading partners. The United States, however, leads in trade with India, accounting for about one-sixth of all exports and imports. Much of India’s trade comes via the major seaports in India. Large containers are loaded with goods and then shipped to ports around the world where they are unloaded and carried away by rail or trucks. The primary exports include clothing, gems, agricultural products, leather products, iron ore, and other minerals.
