C

olombia, as is true of many Latin American countries, exhib- its a rich blend of Amerindian, Spanish, African, and other human features. This is true in regard to both biological ancestry and culture (a people’s way of life). Today, in fact, it is this mix of human traits that best defines Colombia’s population and lifestyle. In this chapter, you will come to better know and understand Colombia’s people. You will learn about their demographic (statisti- cal data pertaining to the human population) characteristics and patterns of settlement. You also will meet the various ethnic groups that have created Colombia’s unique and somewhat diverse human landscapes. Finally, the chapter identifies the major culture traits that bind Colombians together, including their language, religion, society, and diet.
