The only community of any size is Leticia. This city of about 25,000 residents is located at the point where the borders of Peru, Brazil, and Colombia meet. It also has the advantage of sitting on the upper Amazon River, allowing it to be a local trade center, although only air and river boat link-­ ages exist to the outside world. Despite being located about 2,000 miles (3,218 kilometers) upstream from the mouth of the mighty Amazon, ­ocean-­going vessels reach Leticia and beyond (to Iquitos, Peru).
