Overall objective

To improve assessment and monitoring capacities in environmental protection and coastal zone management in Lebanon by strengthening and enforcing the role of the National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) through capacity/institutional building and training and education of its staff.

Specific objectives

To critically analyse the present status of natural resources in Lebanon To improve integrated resource management with major focus on coastal marine ecosystems To strengthen capacity performance of CNRS and transform it as a centre of excellence To develop a prototype system for institutional analyses and performance to be replicated in other ENP countries of the region To develop frameworks and common indicators for assessment and monitoring To enhance EU-regional networking, training and cooperation To improve governance structure of CNRS and of Lebanese institutions To design and implement an efficient environmental Information Technology and Earth Observation (IT/EO) monitoring platform To develop an integrated framework for the analysis of relationships between production, natural resources, urban and rural development and environmental protection in a Mediterranean context, in order to support national decision-making following EU standards
