WELKOM

Beste deelnemers, genodigden en bezoekers, Het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd in Neerpelt (EMJ) is verheugd om duizenden jongeren van 23 nationaliteiten te mogen ontvangen in Neerpelt. Europa heeft na enkele beproevingen beseft dat, naast een open markt, cultuur en identiteit onmisbare bouwstenen zijn. Een gegeven waar ons Festival al 66 jaar aan werkt. “Jongeren stimuleren om in een koor te zingen” blijft de belangrijkste missie van dit Festival. Maar zingen in een koor is meer dan klanken die in harmonie in elkaar opgaan. Het gevoel van samenhorigheid moeten wij optimaal stimuleren om onze jeugd te laten voelen dat wij met zijn allen wel degelijk in harmonie en met respect voor elkaar kunnen samenleven. Ons Festival wil in deze een toonaangevende rol spelen. In het kader van de 100ste verjaardag van het einde van WO I heeft het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd haar plichtwerken opgedragen aan dit thema. Maar wij willen dit heuglijk feit graag extra vorm geven door een internationaal koor samen te stellen en deel te laten nemen aan de “Last Post” ceremonie in Ieper. Deze plechtigheid gedenkt reeds vele jaren de gesneuvelden uit de Common Wealth en andere landen, allen gestorven voor vrijheid en waarden in Europa. De Last Post is normaal een signaal voor het einde van de dag. Maar elk dageinde is eveneens de voorbode van een nieuwe dag vol met nieuwe opportuniteiten. Wij willen graag met onze deelnemers bijdragen aan deze positieve boodschap. Op maandag 30 april zal dan ook een grote delegatie bestaande uit negen deelnemende koren afreizen naar Ieper om aldaar verschillende dagconcerten en de “Last Post” te verzorgen. Het hele bestuur is ervan overtuigd dat wij met al onze deelnemers en partners naast dit uniek event eveneens een gevarieerd programma kunnen aanbieden voor elke muziekliefhebber. Wij hopen u dan ook te mogen ontvangen op een van onze vele concerten of activiteiten. Het Festival dankt de Europese Gemeenschap, de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Provincie Limburg, de Gemeente Neerpelt, de diverse sponsors, de vrienden van het Festival en de vele vrijwilligers voor hun structurele ondersteuning en sympathie. WELCOME

My dear participants, guests and visitors, The European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt (EMJ) is delighted to welcome thousands of youngsters from 23 nationalities in Neerpelt. After a few ordeals, we, in Europe have realized, that, in addition to an open market, a “cultural identity” is indispensable. An item that our Festival is working on for 66 years now. The main mission of our Festival will always be to “encourage young people to sing in a choir”. But singing in a choir is so much more than sounds, blending in harmony. We must show our youngsters that a feeling of unity and togetherness needs to be stimulated, to make them feel that we can indeed live in harmony and mutual respect. In this, our Festival wants to play a leading role. Bearing in mind the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the European Music Festival for Young People has dedicated its mandatory works to this theme. Also, in order to emphasize this joyful event, EMJ is putting together an international choir to participate in the “Last Post” ceremony in Ypres. Since many years now, this ceremony commemorates those from the Common Wealth and other countries, who gave their lives for freedom and values in Europe. Normally, the “Last Post” indicates the end of the day. Then again, every end of the day is also a prelude of a new day, full of new opportunities. We wish to contribute to this positive message. Therefor a significant delegation, consisting of nine participating choirs, will travel to Ypres on Monday, April 30th, in order to attend to various day concerts as well as the “Last Post”. The entire board is convinced, that, next to this unique event, we can offer a versatile program with all our participants and their partners for every music amateur. This is why we hope to be able to welcome you at one of our many concerts or activities. The Festival would like to express its gratitude to the European Community, the Flemish Community, the Province of Limburg, the Neerpelt City council, the many sponsors, friends of the Festival and the many volunteers for their structural support and sympathy. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Kari Ala-Pöllänen Espoo – Finland Kari Ala-Pöllänen behaalde zijn diploma leraar en studeerde muziekwetenschap en orkesten koorleiding. Hij is een veelzijdig muzikant en dirigent en was muziekleraar, muzikant, dirigent, koorzanger, componist en schrijver van muziekboeken. Momenteel is hij artistiek directeur, jurylid, gastdirigent en lector in Finland en het buitenland. Ook is hij voorzitter van het IFCM Songbridge artistiek comité. Kari Ala-Pöllänen graduated as a school teacher and studied musicology and orchestral and choral conducting. He is a versatile musician and conductor and has acted as music teacher, musician, conductor, chorister, composer and writer of music books. He is artistic director, jury member, guest conductor and lecturer in Finland and abroad. Jo Annemans Merksem – België Jo Annemans studeerde notenleer, gitaar, voordracht en toneel en vervolmaakte autodidactisch zijn muzikale kennis in de populaire vorm van het meerstemmig zingen. Hij is zangerarrangeur van de pop-a-capellaformatie “Voice Male” en zong met hen meerdere shows in binnen- en buitenland (o.a. Europa Cantat). Hij is een veelgevraagd docent voor nationale en internationale workshops en jurering in wedstrijden en festivals in binnen- en buitenland (o.a. EMJ, Balk Top festival). Jo Annemans studied music theory, guitar, speech and drama. Self-taught, he perfected his musical knowledge, in the popular polyphonic singing. He acts as singer-arranger of the pop acapella band “Voice Male” and sang on several shows with them at home as well as abroad (i.a. Europa Cantat). He is frequently asked as lecturer for national and international workshops and as jury member at competitions and festivals in Belgium and abroad (i.a. EMJ, Balk Top festival). www.joannemans.be

Luc Anthonis* Antwerpen – België Luc Anthonis is docent koordirectie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij is dirigent, gastdirigent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland. Luc Anthonis teaches choral direction at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. He is conductor, guest conductor and jury member in Belgium and abroad.

JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Kurt Bikkembergs Stevoort – België Kurt Bikkembergs kan bogen op jarenlange ervaring als dirigent en componist met een grote voorliefde voor de hedendaagse koormuziek. Als neoconservatief herkent en aanvaardt hij de verworvenheden en kwaliteiten uit het verleden zonder de positieve verwezenlijkingen van de huidige generatie uit het oog te verliezen. Evenwel verliest hij zichzelf niet in maatschappelijkeconomische valkuilen. Je leven ten dienste stellen van de muziek en mensen – die willen kennismaken met de muziek – is het mooie leidmotief. Bikkembergs werkt graag met jongeren (van geest) die de muziek centraal willen stellen in hun leven, tijdens concerten en bij uitvoeringen om luisteraars schoonheid te laten ervaren. Dit houdt dus onvermijdelijk zelfstudie, - reflectie en –ontwikkeling in; zowel bij de leiding als bij de uitvoerders. Kurt Bikkembergs builds on years of experience as a conductor and composer with a particular fondness for contemporary choir music. Being a neoconservative, he recognizes and accepts the attainments and qualities of music and society from the past, without losing sight of the current generation’s achievements. In addition to this, he consciously resists socioeconomic pitfalls, like the unreliability of present-day media. Devoting his life to the service of music and of people who want to learn about music is his primary motive. Bikkembergs likes to work with people who are young at heart, who want to put music first in their lives and during concerts, to let the listener experience beauty. This inevitably means self study, self reflection and self development, both for those in charge and for those who perform. www.montefagorum.be Timothy Brown Cambridge – Verenigd Koninkrijk Timothy Brown kreeg zijn eerste kooropleiding in Westminster Abbey en als lid van het “King’s College choir”, Cambridge. Van 1979 tot 2010 was hij dirigent van het gerenommeerd “Clare College Chapel choir”, in Cambridge. Gedurende meerdere jaren dirigeerde hij het “Cambridge University Chamber Choir” en, sinds 1994, ook het professionele, in Londen gevestigde kamerkoor “English Voices”. Van 2011 tot 2016 was hij oprichtend-dirigent van de “Sing-Akademie” in Zürich, Zwitserland. Hij dirigeert concerten en workshop over de gehele wereld en recent nog in Thailand, Griekenland, de VS en Israël. Timothy Brown received his initial musical training as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and as a member of the “King’s College choir”, Cambridge. From 1979 to 2010 he was Director of the renowned “Clare College Chapel Choir”, in Cambridge. For many years he conducted the “Cambridge University Chamber Choir” and, since 1994, also the professional, London-based chamber choir, “English Voices”. From 2011 to 2016 he was the founder-conductor of the “Zürcher Sing-Akademie” in Switzerland. He directs concerts and workshops all over the world, most recently in Thailand, Greece, the USA and Israel. Erika Budai* Leuven – België Erika Budai studeerde voor beroepsmusicus aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven en aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel. Zij is docente harmonieleer en muziekcompositie aan het Conservatorium in Leuven en actief als componiste. Ze wordt als jurylid regelmatig gevraagd op nationale en internationale festivals en compositiewedstrijden en is bestuurslid van het Béla Bartók archief in Brussel. Erika Budai studied for professional musician at the “Lemmensinstituut” in Louvain and at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. She teaches harmony and music composition at the Conservatory in Louvain and is active as composer. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Ludo Claesen Hasselt – België Ludo Claesen studeerde percussie, muziekschriftuur, compositie en koor- en orkestdirectie aan het Lemmensinstituut van Leuven en het Vlaams Muziekconservatorium van Antwerpen. Hij doceerde 36 jaar lang polyfonie en orkestspel aan LUCA-ARTS Leuven. Momenteel doceert hij koordirectie aan de Hogeschool Zuyd - Conservatorium Maastricht en aan het Stedelijk Conservatorium Hasselt. Hij is componist, dirigent, docent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland. Ludo Claesen studied percussion, notation, composition and choral- and orchestral conducting at the “Lemmensinstituut” in Louvain and the Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp. He taught for 36 years polyphonics and orchestration at the LUCA-ARTS Louvain. Alain Craens De Klinge – België Alain Craens studeerde aan het Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium Antwerpen en Brussel, waar hij verschillende diploma’s behaalde waaronder “meester in muziek” (compositie) met de grootste onderscheiding. Als musicus was hij solo hoboïst in de Vlaamse Kameropera en het Vlaams Kamerorkest. Nu is hij artistiek directeur en docent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen. Hij ontving de prijs Paul Gilson voor harmonie, de prijs A. De Vleeshouwer voor compositie en tweemaal de Cantabile-prijs voor compositie. In 2018 werd hij genomineerd door Sabam in de categorie “hedendaagse muziek”. Hij schreef werken voor het Nationaal Orkest van België, I SOLISTI, Vlaams Sinfonietta, het Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble, het Europees Muziekfestival voor de Jeugd Neerpelt, e.a.. Hij is internationaal actief als arrangeur en dirigent en heeft zich toegelegd op lichte muziek en het opleiden van koordirigenten. Hij is medeauteur over de ontwikkeling van het muziekonderwijs, gastdocent en jurylid tijdens binnen- en buitenlandse festivals en wedstrijden. John is artistiek leider en landelijk juryvoorzitter van het Nederlands Koor Festival. John Damsma studied the cello, school music and orchestra conducting at the Conservatory of Groningen. He is internationally active as arranger and conductor and concentrates on light music and educating choir conductors. He is a co-author for the development of school music, a guest lecturer and a jury member at festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Hendrik Derolez Gent - België Hendrik Derolez is sinds 1989 verbonden aan de “Opera Ballet Vlaanderen” te Gent en Antwerpen. Als koorrepetitor werkte hij jarenlang met gerenommeerde koordirigenten. Hij werd koorleider van het Kinderkoor van de Vlaamse Opera bij hun start in 1991. Deze groep van jonge kinderen is uitgegroeid tot een uitmuntend koor dat vele stijlen beoefent en regelmatig wordt geëngageerd door befaamde Belgische orkesten. Hendrik gelooft dat dit mooie resultaat ligt in het nastreven van een natuurlijke techniek, maximale voorbereiding en het individueel responsabiliseren van elk zangertje. Ever since 1989, Hendrik Derolez is connected to the “Opera Ballet Vlaanderen” in Ghent and Antwerp. As choir tutor, for years he worked with highly valued choir conductors. Right from the start of the Flemish Opera Children’s Choir, in 1991, he became their conductor. This group of young children evolved into an excellent choir, that now practices many styles and is regularly committed by famous Belgian orchestras. Hendrik likes to believe that this successful result comes from pursuing a natural technique, maximum preparation and individual responsibility of each singer. Johannes Dewilde Gent – België Johannes Dewilde profileert zich in de muziekwereld als pedagoog, docent, trompettist en koordirigent. Hij behaalde een master in de muziektheorie, een bachelor als uitvoerend muzikant en een master in de koordirectie aan de Conservatoria van Gent en Antwerpen. Hij geeft les aan de AMWD in Gent, waar hij ook het kinderen jeugdkoor dirigeert en is ook als docent verbonden aan de Artevelde Hogeschool. Hij is sinds 2012 dirigent van het (inter)nationaal bekroond jong dameskoor Amarenthe. Ook met zijn gemengd vocaal ensemble Saevus viel hij reeds in de prijzen. In 2017 ontving hij in Rome de ‘conductor prize for outstanding achievements’. Johannes Dewilde in the music world presents himself as a pedagogue, teacher, trumpeter and choir conductor. He holds a master in music theory, a bachelor as performing musician and a master’s degree in choral conducting at the Ghent and Antwerp Conservatories. He teaches at the AMWD in Ghent, where he also acts as director at the children’s and youth choir. He also teaches at the ‘Artevelde Hogeschool’. Since 2012 he acts as conductor of the (inter)nationally awarded young women’s choir “Amarenthe”. With his mixed vocal ensemble “Saevus” he also won several prizes. Margrethe Ek Moss – Noorwegen Margrethe Ek dirigeert vanaf haar 14 jaar, studeerde master in zingen, muzikale uitvoering en presentatie en behaalde een diploma in directie aan de Noorse muziekacademie. Ze werkt momenteel als hoofd van de afdeling Muziek-Dans-Drama en als docent aan de “Kirkeparken videregående skole” in Moss. Ze werkte gedurende 11 jaren aan de universiteit van Oslo in de departementen zang en directie en dirigeerde verschillende internationaal bekroonde en hooggewaardeerde vocale en instrumentale ensembles. Vandaag dirigeert ze het in 2010 opgerichte “Moss Ensemble Consensus”. Margrethe Ek started conducting at the age of 14, studied master in singing, music performance and presentation and received a diploma in conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music. She currently works as head of the Music-Dance-Drama department and as professor at “Kirkeparken videregående skole” in Moss. She worked for 11 years at the University of Oslo within the subjects of song and conducting and has conducted several internationally awarded and highly valued vocal and instrumental ensembles. JURYLEDEN JURY MEMBERS Inge Feyen Halle (Saale) – Duitsland Inge Feyen verwierf reeds vele muzikale ervaringen in koorleiding, orgelspel, zang en pedagogiek. In 2012 ontdekte ze het “Lichtenberger Institut” en is ze sindsdien vol vuur voor deze manier van werken. Sinds 2017 onderricht ze dan ook volgens deze Lichtenberger methode, een methode die ze nu als basis van haar werking toepast in de zangschool van Halle, Duitsland. Inge is er sinds 2016 actief als koorleider en heeft er daarenboven ook de leiding. Inge Feyen already acquired many musical experiences in choral conducting, organ playing, singing and pedagogy. In 2012, she discovered the “Lichtenberger Institut” and ever since, has been thrilled about this way of working, which is why since 2017, she teaches according to this Lichtenberger method. Already this method is the basis of operation in the singing school of Halle, Germany where Inge acts as choral conductor since 2016 and in addition, acts as principal of this singing school. https://www.mz-web.de/halle-saale/inge-feyen--eine-belgierin-in-halle-24238926 Masis Aram Gözbek Istanbul - Turkije Masis Aram Gözbek studeerde wiskunde aan de Boğaziçi Universiteit en compositie aan de Yildiz Technische Universiteit en de Mimar Sinan Universiteit voor Schone Kunsten. Hij nam deel aan talloze competities, festivals en meesterklassen over de hele wereld en studeerde bij hooggewaardeerde dirigenten en componisten. Hij won internationale prijzen waaronder twee ‘World Championship Awards’, de ‘Young Conductor Special Award’, ‘The Most Successful Young Person Award’ en in Turkije ‘The Music Entrepeneur of the Year’. Hij werd met het ‘Boğaziçi Jazz Choir’ uitgenodigd naar de meest prestigieuze festivals en is oprichter en artistiek directeur van zowel dit als van het ‘Boğaziçi Youth Choir’ en de ‘MAGMA’ koren. First Masis Aram Gözbek studied mathematics at Boğaziçi University, then composition at Yıldız Technical University and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He attended countless competitions, festivals and master classes all over the world and studied with highly regarded conductors and composers. He won international prizes including two ‘World Championship’ awards, the ‘Young Conductor Special Award’, ‘The Most Successful Young Person’ award and ‘The Music Entrepreneur of the Year’ in Turkey. Hij volgde eveneens de voortgezette opleiding koordirectie bij Kurt Bikkembergs. Hij is oprichter, dirigent en gastdirigent van menig koor, waaronder de Camerata Aetas Nova waarmee hij de titel ‘Koor van het Jaar’ behaalde. Als leraar muzikale opvoeding is hij verbonden aan het Heilig Hartinstituut te Heverlee, geeft hij dirigentencursussen voor Koor en Stem en is hij actief in de beheerraad van de Vlaamse Federatie voor Jonge Koren. Dieter Staelens studied at the “Lemmensinstituut” in Louvain. He got his degree in music education, music theory, choral conducting, solmization, harmony and polyphony. Ze is of was bestuurslid van de Estse koorfederatie, Ests centrum voor muziekontwikkeling, “European Music Council”, “European Choral Association – Europa Cantat” en “Choral Festival Network”. Ze organiseert (inter)nationale koorevenementen, presenteerde tijdens (inter)nationale congressen, publiceerde artikelen in (inter)nationale magazines en kranten, leidde (inter)nationale workshops en was actief in juryteams van internationale festivals. Kaie Tanner finished choral and music education at Georg Ots Tallinn Music School and the Estonian Academy of Music. She is working as general secretary of the Estonian Choral Association and conducts the preparatory-, children’s- and girls’ choirs of the Estonian Radio. She is or was board member of the Estonian Choral Association, Estonian Music Development Center, European Music Council, European Choral Association – Europa Cantat and Choral Festival Network. She organizes (inter)national choral events, presented at (inter)national conferences, published articles in (inter) national magazines and newspapers, lead (inter)national workshops and worked in juries of international choir festivals. Hans van den Brand Berkel-Enschot – Nederland Hans van den Brand studeerde schoolmuziek, orgel, piano en koordirectie aan het Fontys Conservatorium en volgde meestercursussen orkestdirectie en arrangeren. Hij is verbonden als hogeschooldocent muziekdidactiek en ensembleleiding aan de Fontys Academie voor Muziekeducatie Tilburg en het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Daarnaast is Hans koordirigent en -coach, componist-arrangeur, veelgevraagd gastdocent en jurylid in binnen- en buitenland. Hans van den Brand studied school music, organ, piano and choir conducting at the Fontys Conservatory and attended master classes orchestra conducting and arranging. Marijke van Klaveren Voorburg – Nederland Marijke van Klaveren studeerde koordirectie, schoolmuziek, orgel en kerkmuziek aan de Conservatoria van Den Haag en Rotterdam. Ze is als locatiemanager verbonden aan de Academy of Vocal Arts in Den Haag; zij doceert er aan de opleiding voor kinderen en is ook hoofdvakdocent van de opleiding voor kinderkoordirigenten. Daarnaast is zij docent ensemblezang aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag en dirigent van diverse koren. Terug in Oostenrijk werd hij koordirigent en –componist van werken die door meerdere internationale koren en festivals werden opgevoerd. Hij was voorzitter van de Oostenrijkse Korenvereniging en is artistiek directeur van de Internationale Korenwedstrijd “Ave Verum” in Baden. Hij is artistiek directeur van het “Vox Humana” kamerkoor en de “Salzburg International Choral Celebration & Competition”. Hij is jurylid en workshopdocent in diverse internationale festivals. Wolfgang Ziegler worked, after finishing pedagogical studies, as an assistant in music education, violinist and electronic music composer in the USA. Back in Austria he became choral director and composer of pieces commissioned by international choirs and festivals. He was president of the Austrian Choral Association and is artistic director of the International Choral Competition “Ave Verum” in Baden. To qualify for the pennant series the choirs must have gained a remarkable result at an international festival or at least be able to show a thorough artistic experience. De maximumleeftijd van de deelnemers bedraagt 12 jaar in de reeks A1, 14 jaar in de reeks A2, 15 jaar in de reeks D en 28 jaar in de reeksen B, C, E, F en G. The maximum age in the category A1 is fixed on 12 years, in the category A2 on 14 years, in the category D on 15 years and in the categories B, C, E, F and G on 28 years.
