Taiwan is one of the most welcoming countries in the world. Eating in Taiwan comes a close second, with a vast array of Chinese food and local delicacies on offer. Taiwan is a relatively rich country compared to China or southeast Asia, but prices are generally lower than in most other developed nations, and the willingness of almost everyone you meet to help means it’s almost impossible to get stuck. In Taiwan you can criss-cross mountains on colonial-era hiking trails or cycle a lone highway with the blue Pacific on one side and green volcanic arcs on the other.

ACROSS OUR SHORES 3 Foodie Gems for the Johor Bound Running out of food adventures in Singapore? Hop across the causeway to Johor Bahru. There’s plenty more to JB than meets the eye, so on your next trip here, go off the beaten path and dine at one of these underrated spots Burger Bakar Abang Burn

Abang Burn, Malay for ‘Burn Brother’, is a local grilled burger chain in Malaysia known for their juicy and crispy patty combo. The anonymous face behind the successful burger franchise used to be a butcher in Australia before returning to his home country. His burger chain is currently the leader in the local grilled burger space, with outlets throughout Malaysia. Burgers start at around RM$8/S$2.70 with their premium burgers priced around RM$16/S$5.40. Patties are perfectly chargrilled and served on toasted buns with a variety of sauces and a fresh lettuce slice. Warning: They’re the classic Ramly on steroids. Address Lot 25231-A, Jalan Yahya Al-Datar, Johor Bahru 80300 Directions If driving, upon leaving the Malaysia Immigration, head past the Shell petrol station and take the next left. If taking a taxi, inform the driver you’d like to go to B.Point, situated after the petrol stations near the immigration. Hours Daily 5pm - 12.30am

The Replacement

You haven’t experienced a place until you’ve lived like a local. Hidden between two of the busiest streets in Johor Bahru, this hidden gem will delight your senses. As your tastebuds explore the rich and savoury Sup Tulang (Mutton Soup), the aroma of barbecued satay and sambal stingray wrapped in banana leaves will tantalise you to order a few more rounds. With its rustic and laid back atmosphere, you are sure to be set for a good evening. The best part? All this at a slice of Lau Pa Sat or Chomp Chomp’s price. Address Between Jalan Meldrum and Jalan Wong Ah Fook. Directions From McDonalds at City Square, exit City Square, turn left and walk straight. Cross a traffic light, pass Hong Leong Bank building and turn left into a small side street. Hours Open from noon, recommended to come after 6pm.

Address 33 Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru 80000 Directions Taxi drivers should know the address. If not, the nearby Roost Café serves as an iconic landmark. When you’re near, The Replacement’s all-white building is hard to miss. Hours Mon - Fri 10am - 7pm | Sat 9am - 10pm | Sun 10am - 7pm

So the next time you come to Johor Bahru, what’s it going to be: Fried oysters paired with satay, crunchy churros downed with a creamy latte or a mouthwatering grilled burger? Whatever your choice, there’s something here for everyone.

Street Food

What happens when a medical student and an interior design student with a shared passion for coffee meet? You get The Replacement. Coffee enthusiasts Edward and Vince are no strangers to the cafe scene. Their first cafe, Faculty of Caffeine was initiated 2 years ago and is a mere short walk away from The Replacement. A haven for caffeine lovers, the café has been open for 4 months with a lodge coming up in the following months. The Churros (From RM$12.90/S$4.35) brings a satisfying crunch when bitten into and the Breakfast Platter (RM$25.90/S$8.74) is a must-have. Of course, they make a mean latte (RM$10/S$3.37).

Make Lasting Memories in Taiwan A vibrant night market scene, an endless gamut of Chinese cuisines and street snacks, and beautiful nature found at every corner - Taiwan holds a certain allure that keeps travellers coming back for more.

Hailed as the heart of Asia, Taiwan is a mishmash of culture, heritage and Chinese traditions jam-packed into one small island. With so many exciting places and so little time, we help you make the most of your vacation by sifting out some of the hot favourites.

Jiufen & Shifen

Your trip to Taiwan is never complete without visiting Jiufen and Shifen, both village towns that are rich in Taiwanese culture and history, complete with a retro atmosphere. Jiufen is an old mining town that shot to fame when it was featured in award winning movie “A City of Sadness”, while Shifen is well-known for the railroad tracks that is built right in the centre of the town such that visitors can freely cross and walk along them. Here, you will also get to release a Chinese lantern into the sky with your wish written on it, a meaningful and unique activity

Taipei 101 The second tallest building in the world with 101 stories, housing a multi-level shopping mall, a food court, an international grocery store, restaurants and stores – need we say more? This fascinating architectural masterpiece also has an observation deck and museum, where visitors can learn more about how the building is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. Host venue of the internationally renowned Taipei 101 New Year Eve Countdown annual event, the building lights up with colours at intervals from the base floors to the top as you count down to the new year, along with a massive display of fireworks and a star-studded concert that is sure to get you partying till the sun comes up.

Cingjing Farm Take some time to relax as you immerse yourself in the scenic verdure of Cingjing Veterans Farm and inhale the fresh air of the countryside. With

rolling plains that stretches as far as your eye can see, you can enjoy one of their nature trails and hikes or simply watch and interact with the herds of sheep freely grazing on the grasslands. While you’re here, make sure to stop by the beautiful Small Swiss Garden, where the Northern European ambience and design will instantly transport you to Switzerland.

Yehliu Home to some of the most famous geological rock formations, the Yehliu Geopark resides along a cape that stretches for 1.7km. The soft composition of the rock layers in this area is prone to erosion by seawater, waves and wind forces, forming interesting rock structures with representative names like the ‘Queen’s Head’, ‘Sea Candles’ and ‘Fairy Shoe’.
