Year in Review 2018 – 2019


Dear Friends, I am so pleased to share the progress and accomplishments of the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis over the 2018-19 academic year. This has been an exhilarating year to see our community’s vision and efforts flourish. We marked 10 years of strong growth in our Master of Public Health program, which was ranked by U.S. News & World Report for the first time this year. Our ranking at No. 17 is the highest of any program of public health. Our Master of Social Work program, a renowned leader in the field, has been reaccredited for the next eight years by the Council on Social Work Education. Our Master of Social Policy program has expanded further, so that individuals who obtain master’s degrees at other institutions can also pursue this high-level of social policy training at the Brown School. Our commitment to policy engagement and community impact has seen exciting developments. The work of our Clark-Fox Policy Institute is now amplified by the university’s new Social Policy Institute, directed by Michal Grinstein-Weiss, the Shanti K. Khinduka Distinguished Professor at the Brown School. Our post-master’s certificate program, begun in 2018, offered four course offerings on topics including program evaluation, assessment and treatment of PTSD, and mediation and conflict resolution. We are grateful to advance leadership and evidence-based practice among professionals in our region through these certificates and our upcoming offerings.

One of the developments I am proudest of is our new approach to meeting the financial need of students with new and existing scholarships. We are committed to creating access to exceptional graduate education for ALL students, regardless of their economic background and resources. Our focus on addressing student debt — which included offering 32 full-tuition scholarships for master’s students — alleviates financial barriers and ensures that students are better able to follow their unique pathways to impact the world. Research and Innovation INNOVATION IN CHILD MALTREATMENT

EFFECTIVE SCHOOL-BASED SUICIDE PREVENTION

Melissa Jonson-Reid, the Ralph and Muriel Pumphrey Professor of Social Work Research, and her team were awarded a fiveyear, $6.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to create the Center for Innovation in Child Maltreatment Policy, Research and Training (CICM). The CICM has assembled an extraordinary group of researchers and experts dedicated to advancing transdisciplinary science and developing innovative approaches for dissemination and training. Its work to prevent child maltreatment and promote healthy development among victims of abuse and neglect will include the implementation of Child Welfare Data SMART (Specification, Management, Analysis, Replication and Transfer), a multistate project led by Professor Brett Drake.

More than 100 school stakeholders gathered at the Brown School in June for the Hope Policy Academy, led by Associate Professor of Practice Ryan Lindsay. They learned about the development, implementation and evaluation of effective suicide prevention policies and were able to tailor their own practices through targeted workshops. The academy was designed to fill a gap in the capacity and resources of schools to identify mental health issues and appropriate treatment connections. ILLUSTRATING THE BENEFITS OF TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE

A new web-based resource helps scientists and researchers demonstrate the health and societal benefits of their work. The Translational Science Benefits Model (TSBM) is an effort of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences and the Brown School’s Center for Public Health Systems Science led by Professor Doug Luke, in partnership with the Bernard Becker Medical Library at the Washington University School of Medicine. Using the TSBM framework, researchers can track the clinical, community, economic and policy benefits that result from their work — such as the creation of a new diagnostic procedure, improvement of health care services, development of a patented product or impact on a change in policy. TREATING SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

The Brown School has partnered with Preferred Family Healthcare in St. Louis to launch the Community Academic Partnership on Addiction (CAPA), a teaching, learning and research clinic aimed at combating the opioid epidemic and treating other substance use disorders. Associate Professor David Patterson Silver Wolf is an expert on substance use disorder treatment services and CAPA Clinic’s chief research officer. Inspired by the models used by university hospitals, the CAPA Clinic is an innovative partnership for a school of social work.

ADDRESSING HUNGER: E3 NUTRITION LAB

To address “hidden hunger”— poverty-related nutritional deficiencies in mothers and young children around the globe — the E3 Nutrition Lab at the Brown School is investigating nutrition interventions that are environmentally sustainable, economically affordable, and evolutionarily appropriate. Led by Associate Professor Lora Iannotti, the lab’s team includes faculty from pediatric radiology, neurology, engineering and more.

Student and Alumni Impact EXPANDING COLLEGE ACCESS FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED

Robert Sagastume, a thirdyear MSW/MSP student, is fighting for state policy that supports, rather than curtails, the opportunities of undocumented youth. Last spring, as a legislative intern for the Missouri House of Representatives, he promoted Robert Sagastume a bill that would extend instate tuition to undocumented immigrants. His policy acumen earned him the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy outstanding student of the year award, and he was selected to attend the 11th annual Clinton Global Initiative University. The work is deeply personal for Sagastume, a former Dreamer. A LIFETIME OF SOCIAL IMPACT IN INDIA

Murli Desai, PhD ’83, received the Life Time Achievement Award from the National Association of Professional Social Workers in India. Desai, who spent the majority of her career as a faculty member and leader at the Tata Institute for Social Science, has focused her research on family and women’s studies, childhood adolescence, and old age. The award honors her important contributions to social development policy and practice from a human rights perspective.

IMPROVING THE WELL-BEING OF UGANDAN REFUGEE CHILDREN

A group of Brown School students participated in a new 10-day field course in Uganda to explore the ways of addressing child protection concerns for the more than 1 million registered refugees and asylum seekers in the country. Led by Associate Professor Lindsay Stark and Fred Ssewamala, the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor, the students were able to visit and learn from not only government officials, including the Ugandan Parliament, but also many NGOs who are delivering services on the ground. Students participated directly in data gathering to inform current programming and their understanding of the complex issues the country is facing.

FIGHTING STARK DISPARITIES IN MATERNAL MORTALITY

Brittany Ferrell, MPH ’20, a well-known activist and leader in the Black Lives Matter movement, is developing a documentary that focuses on how the health care system fails Black pregnant women. The documentary, working title “You Lucky You Got a Mama,” will echo her experiences working as a high-risk labor and delivery nurse in St. Louis, where she saw how systemic racism and related stress affects the health outcomes for women of color and their babies.

Our Program and Values ADDRESSING STUDENT DEBT

TOP-RANKING MPH PROGRAM

The Brown School is committed to creating access to exceptional graduate education for all students, regardless of their economic background and resources. All students requesting scholarship funding receive an award, and 32 full-tuition scholarships were granted during this year’s admission and award cycle. We also increased need-based scholarships for tuition costs. In total, 44 admitted students were offered need-based awards. With a lessened debt burden post-graduation, these students are better able to follow their unique pathways to impact the world.

The Master of Public Health program recently celebrated 10 years of innovation and excellence. The strides over the past decade have been remarkable: more than 25 full-time faculty, 500 alumni, a growing doctoral program, and a unique transdisciplinary approach with a health equity lens. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report began ranking programs of public health. The Brown School MPH program’s debut at No. 17 distinguished it as the highest-ranked program among a field of public health schools.

CONVENING COMMUNITY

A trilogy of convenings, “Blacks in America: 400 Years Plus,” welcomed hundreds to campus and honored the struggle, resiliency and contributions of Black Americans since the first documented arrival in 1619. Associate Professor Jack Kirkland led the event series; his legacy includes work as an activist and strategist in the civil rights movement.

In 2019, 400 Years+ events took place in February, June and November.

ADVANCING SOCIAL POLICY

The Brown School’s Master of Social Policy (MSP) program continues to expand. In addition to being open to the School’s MSW and MPH students as a dual degree, there are now jointdegree options in partnership with other Washington University graduate programs — as well as paired-program options for those who have obtained master’s degrees at other institutions. The MSP program is designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders to understand the substance of social issues, as well as how to design, manage and evaluate social policy on local, national and international levels.

Faculty Additions and Accolades Ross A. Hammond joined the faculty as the Betty Bofinger Brown Associate Professor. Proscovia Nabunya joined the Brown School as an assistant professor, research track. Deborah Salvo joined the faculty as an assistant professor, tenure track, from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Lindsay Stark joined the faculty as an associate professor, tenure track, from Columbia University. Timothy McBride was installed as the Bernard Becker Professor. Ross Brownson was installed as the inaugural Steven H. and Susan U. Lipstein Distinguished Professor.

Professor Brett Drake and Melissa JonsonReid, the Ralph and Muriel Pumphrey Professor of Social Work Research, received the 2019 Society for Social Work and Research Book Award for “After the Cradle Falls: What Child Abuse Is, How We Respond to It, and What You Can Do About It,� Oxford University Press. Three faculty members were inducted as fellows in the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare: Professor Brett Drake; Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Shanti K. Khinduka Distinguished Professor and associate dean for policy initiatives; and Fred Ssewamala, William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor and director of the International Center for Child and Health Development (ICHAD). Mary McKay, Neidorff Family and Centene Corporation Dean of the Brown School, has joined the AASWSW board of directors.

Shenyang Guo, Frank J. Bruno Distinguished Professor of Social Work Research, received the Distinguished Faculty Award and delivered the convocation address.

Founded in 1925, the George Warren Brown School was named with a generous gift from Betty Bofinger Brown in memory of her late husband.
