WESTERN SICHUAN CHARACTERISTIC RESIDENCE
Adopt traditional western Sichuan architectural style. Most of the residential buildings have wooden bucket structure, slopingtop, thin eaves to adapt to the hot and humid climate. The buildings are open and transparent, light and comfortable. The white wall makes up for the lack of daylighting in Western Sichuan. Obtain raw materials locally, including wood, lime, green tiles. The design is material -based, which is economical and in harmony with the environment.

03 VOKA 2018.11 - 2019.3
VOKA is an therapeutic interactive toy designed for children with Selective Mutism to help relieving speaking anxiety and assisting in different stages of the treatment combined with the form of games. Also, it provides data information to auxiliary therapists to help them conduct the treatment in a more effective way.

Why didn't she talk?
SM children often have...
Selective Mutism is an anxiety
disorder where children don’t speak in certain situations, such as school, even when they can speak in other situations, such as at home with close family members
One in 140 children suffers from selective mutism
Confident children with selective mutism can use gestures to communicate
Age of onset around 3 or when a child enters school, but mean age of diagnosis is 6
More severely affected children tend to avoid any form of communication – spoken, written or gestured
SM does NOT tend to remit on its own
Anyone ( parent, teacher, peer, stranger...) prompting the child to engage verbally or behaviorally
Uncomfortable being introduced to people Being teased or criticized Being the center of attention Bringing attention to himself/herself Perfectionist (afraid to make a mistake)
Symptoms Abnormal Appearance
Frozen-looking, blank, expressionless face Stiff, awkward body language Lack of eye contact
I really wanted to be like a normal person, but whenever I was in that scene, I felt like my mouth was sealed with glue, and no word in my brain was complete.
Treatments found effective for SM
I interviewed some people who are closely related to SM children to talk about their observations and suggestions
A reinforcement menu (what types of REWARDS the child wants to earn and for what behaviors) is first developed in collaboration with the child
Communicate by POINTING, GESTURING , NODDING ( use games, toys, and ageappropriate projects)
GRADUALLY INCREASING the number of people and places in which speech is rewarded
3 Contingency management
In the Japanese movie “East wind blows across the campus”, a girl with selective mutism speaks normally at home but she can't speak at school, even can't eat normally, and is excluded by her classmates.
A 17-year-old boy killed his girlfriend because of lovelorn. It is reported that he suffered from selective mutism at an early age. The shadow of his childhood made him irritable and extreme in dealing with problems.
Young children who go abroad to school often suffer from selective mutism due to environmental changes. Many children were eventually forced to drop out of school and return home because of academic delays.
We can see from the news that children with SM can easily develop into social isolation and withdrawal in the future, with Poor self-esteem and self-confidence. They often have poor academic performance. More seriously, it maycauses crime or possible suicide.
SM Children are usually utterly silent in my classroom, and forcing questions would make them extremely stressful.
Communicate by DRAWING OR WRITING (use games requiring these modalities)

Self-modeling Repeatedly play tapes that show the child's own fluent speech, expecting the child to get used to hearing him or her speak in these environments, and begin to believe in his or her abilities.
Talks spontaneously using sentences
My daughter can freely express their views at home, but they are extremely resistant to public speaking, even unfamiliar relatives.
TALK SPONTANEOUSLY using words or phrases
We are very worried about his school life. Sometimes, by giving rewards, he would try to speak a little more. LIN Age : 45 Job : SM children’s mother

Every one feels relief
Child is prompted to engage verbally or behaviorally
Environment’s role in shaping the inhibited stance
Environment has empathic response
What is the key to the treatment of Selective Mutism in general ?
Child experiences distress & inhibits
Environment observes distress
Group therapy may be an effective mode of treatment for children with SM. Some of them find support from others who are dealing with the same challenges.
“ A learning history ”
Accompaniment of Familiar People
Prevents children with SM from speaking to those who they have a history of not speaking to
The environment of children with selective mutism (including parents, teachers and peers) often causes more anxiety and aggravates the condition because of the over-direct treatment.
Group therapy programs may include public spaces such as malls, ice cream parlo and senior citizen living centers...

05 LIFE CUBE 2019.09 - 2019.11
Death is "forbidden" in Chinese culture. Chinese people advocate life but avoid death, which leads to many people lost their way in life and seriously limits the development of hospice care in China. This project enables people to understand death, so as to better understand life. When we try to get close to death, we will find that life, like cube, has great tension and capacity, and is full of vitality. Color Scheme #
BACKGROUND WHY IS IT TABOO ? DEATH TABOO IN CHINA
COGNITION IN DIFFERENT REGIONS
In Chinese folk, the topic of death is regarded as very unlucky by Chinese people, which is a kind of "despondent words". Until now, most Chinese people are very taboo to talk about. All the topics and places about death are avoided as much as possible. Funeral homes, crematoria and cemeteries are all places where people stay only for a short time and are considered to be full of misfortune
Traditional culture influence
European countries all have "death
The spirit of "in This World" of Chinese traditional culture takes "Immortality" as the ultimate goal.
education" to guide people to face Primary and secondary schools
death with a calm and wise attitude
Take “being towards death” as their belief. People live in harmony with cemeteries,
offer death courses to deliver
which even appear in central city
education through performance
Lack of soul consciousness Chinese people believe in the culture of "body worship", So talking about "the demise of the flesh" will create a sense of disillusion-ment and even guilt.
LOW DEATH QUALITY
Germany Neth. Italy
In this cultural context, the topic of death will make people feel a "disappearing threat"that creates a sense of fear and meaninglessness, leading to a kind of rejection from the heart
POOR DEATH EDUCATION
Demand for palliative care
According to a survey conducted by East China Normal University, more than 50% of parents have a negative attitude towards death education
Parents’ explanation to children...
According to the report on the death quality index issued by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the death quality of Chinese people ranks 71 out of 80 countries
Unprepared for death
HOSPICE STATUS Unknown about their illness & Pass away in pain
Of the 3,000 patients at Beijing Songtang Hospice Hospital, 93% of them were unprepared for death and had not talked about death with their families. More than 50% of patients did not understand their illness and lived in the lies of their loved ones
Explain scientifially Unexplained Evasive and deceptive Playful and unrealistic
It is difficult to accept teach children about death Death education will make children feel horrible which would be unfavorable to his body and mind
Chinese people did not get proper death education when they were young
CASE STUDY & EFFECTS
Songtang Hospice in china was forced to relocate six times. Due to strong opposition from nearby residents
Throughout my growth, talking freely about death is not allowed, because people think it brings bad luck. Even on the death day of our loved ones, people are very cautious about talking, and are especially taboo
Death taboo create obstacles to the development of domestic hospice care The Chinese way of thinking is very resistant to the term “deathbed”. Talking about the this problem makes people feel cruel and ruthless. The hospice service provided by the hospital made the family dependent think that the hospital did not do their best to save the patients. Therefore, Chinese domestic hospice care hospital is even less well known, and there are not even a few.
Death taboo create an illusion of "infinite life" Such traditions prevent Chinese people from having a correct recognition of the integrity of life and thus give up the experience of limited life process. When they are alive, they muddle along without any aim, as if life will never end. When death comes, they turn grieved which seems that they have never lived.
I have witnessed the departure of many patients, and many of their families concealed their condition from their parents in order to be so filial. Chinese people can be born with high quality but cannot die with high quality

× fail to deal with as a “complete concept”
Human thought can only deal with the "complete concept" of "starting and ending". Only in the view of rational thinking, death is a necessary topic. It can be said that talking about death is the premise of thinking about life, because only when the two points of life and death are established, the integrity of life will be presented, and the meaning and purpose of life will become necessary.
