COORDINATED EFFORTS GUIDE

Coordinated efforts are present in the work of the Administration at Winona State College. Basic in the aims of the college program is the helping of the prospective teachers to grow in understanding the physical and mental problems met in teaching. Education for prospective teachers and businessmen includes a program of selfrealization and growth as well as a wealth of background and information. Teaching skills and techniques are taughtthrough the observationparticipation and supervised teaching programs. Curriculum changes are made to keep in step with the students and with the world. Changes in the needs of the students bring about changes in the type of work presented in the college as well as in the methods of presentation. In collaboration with the college deans and supervisors, this department also handles student counseling, housing, recruiting programs, and financial matters.

WE CAME

We, the 1200 students of Winona State, came from large cities from farms of the dairy and corn belts from small towns and villages from the East We came from everywhere to further our education to gain new experienees with a new group of people

People who represent... twelve states of the Union and three foreign countries We came prepared to accept new responsibilities and to learn Many of us had to adjust to new surrounding to new friends and to "collegiate" ways.

We came with suitcases.

Homecoming, the highlight of the 1960 football season, got off to a blazing start on Friday with a bonfire sponsored by Sigma Tau Gamma. Following the bonfire, Sharon Lang was crowned homecoming queen. The coronation was followed by the performance of the electionyear musical comedy, "Of Thee I Sing." The combination of all of these events added to the spirit and excitement of a big weekend. Saturday was the big day. Beautifully decorated floats, music-making bands, and various dignitaries made up the street parade. The Gamma Delta float depicting Alfred E. Newman and "What, Me Worry?" captured first place. Saturday afternoon the spirit mounted as the game was played, but the Warirors lost 0-2. After the game the annual dance brought another homecoming to a successful close.

To serve all the students both as a group and as individuals is one way of defining the duty of the Student Commission. In attempting to do this, the Commission worked on several projects. It was their responsibility to sponsor Homecoming, set up the budget and the social calendar for the year, boost school spirit, organize Religious Emphasis Week, and assist with orientation activities. One big issue this year was the preliminary planning for a student union at WSC. ORIENTATION TEAM

It is during the first week of college that the members of the Orientation Team fulfill their purpose. Clad in white sailor hats, the Orientation Team tried to help acquaint new students with Winona State. This year they helped with registration, counseling tests, mixers, a Garvin Heights Picnic, and the river tour on the Hiawatha Belle. Mr. M. L. Mariner was the group's adviser.

YOUNG DEMOCRATS

The Young Democrats took an active part in the presidential campaign this fall. Besides discussing pertinent campaign issues, they helped set up the local Kennedy headquarters. Young Republicans began the election year on an enthusiastic note by assisting the local GOP Headquarters with house to house campaigns. They also took several trips to hear prominent Republican Party speakers. STUDENT NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

Activity was a keynote of the Etta Hudson Howell Chapter of the S.N.E.A. throughout the 1960-61 school year. One of the larger clubs on campus, it is open to all students who plan to enter the teaching profession. Monthly meetings featured mock interviews, films, and interesting speakers. This year theclub sponsored the Sham Rock, a Spring Registration dance; the Christmas Seal Drive; and a Homecoming queen candidate. Several members attended the M.E.A. Convention held in St. Paul in October and the Spring Convention held in Bemidji. COLLEGE CHORUS

The college chorus, under the direction of Mr. McCluer, presented various concerts during the year, the first of which was the Christmas concert given for the student body. Also the group sang for various city organizations and neighboring high schools. In addition to their usual full schedule, the chorus sang in the Brahm's Requiem in conjunction with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Oratorio Society and presented SouthPacific this Spring. Chorus appearanees were also made at both the Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. COEDS

The Coeds, a service club consisting of fourteen girls, is Winona State's most recent club. The purpose of this organization is to promote enthusiasm for school functions in such a way as to encourage athletic attendanee and a sportsmanlike spirit, to create a more progressive parent-school relationship, and to offer services to other campus groups. This year the girls ushered at several assembly programs and assisted with the Spring Carnival. The officers were Ancy Helleckson, President; Mary Lou Martinson. MASON MUSIC CLUB

Membership in the Mason Music Club is extended to music majors and minors and to any other students interested in that field. The group fosters enjoyment of music by listening to visiting speakers and records. This year the club sponsored two college band concerts and a mixer for visiting band members who participated in the Homecoming parade. Mr. R. McCluer was the group's adviser. ORCHESTRA

Under the direction of Mr. MeCiuer, our newly formed orchestra adds an element of completeness to many of our school functions and activities. Besides lending wonderfull support to the Christmas concert and the presentation of 18th Century Music—Mozart, the orchestra is a pleasing musical organization when performing by itself. THEY PROVIDE THE MUSIC

COLLEGE BAND

As usual, the Band was a very busy group of musicians this year. The band served a two-fold purpose, giving students who like to play an opportunity to do so, and also serving as a proving - ground for various music classes. Although the public saw the band perform for only two concerts and the Homecoming Parade, many long hours were spent on practice and drills. A part of the band also played at football and basketball games. Officers were Lester Miwa, President; Jerome Paulson, Vice-President; Patricia Bristow, Secretary-Treasurer; and Beatrice Nyrud, Librarian. Mr. Heyer served as adviser and director.

WSC SWING

BAND

The Ryhthm Masters, swing band of WSC, performed several times during the year, under the direction of Mr. Fred Heyer. The

group played for school assembly programs and provided music for a number of dances during the year including the Tri-College Dance. They again participated in the Battle of the Bands with the Merry-Notes of St. Mary's College.

VOICE OF THE CAMPUS IN PRODUCTION

Writing articles, doing paste-ups, meeting deadlines, and stuffing P.O. boxes were common activities for the members of the Winonan staff. Under the capable leadership of Dave Harris, the Winonan offered students and faculty coverage of news, sports, and features. The aim of the staff was to achieve more complete and concise reporting of the happenings in and around WSC. OUR CLUBS OFFER VARIETY

RANGERS CLUB

The Rangers Club, an organization of students from Northern Minnesota, is composed of eleven members who meet once a month. Their activities this year included a Christmas party and bowling. Sob Indihar was President; Paul Martella, Vice-President; andSharon Kern, Secretary - Treasurer. Acting as advisers were Mr. Emanuel and Dr. Fremling.

SIGMA TAU GAMMA

Fraternities can be of use to college men and to the college which they attend this is the belief of the members of Beta Xi Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma. Although this fraternity is not primarily a service organization, it has served W.S.C. this year by building the Homecoming bonfire, handing out wrestling programs at home meets, placing a Christmas tree in Memorial Hall for the holiday season, making possible the student tickets to the State Theatre, and sponsoring a record hop after a football game. The members of this fraternity number twenty-six. The officers were Roger Reupert, President; Warren Hull, Vice-president; Irvin Plitzuweit, Secretary; David Rislove, Treasurer. The adviser for the fraternity is Mr. Jones and the patroness is Miss Finch.

DOLPHIN CLUB

The Dolphin Club is a campus organization open to all students who enjoy swimming for recreation. This year the club sponsored the Beatnik Ball and several openswim nights. Their main project is the swim show presented each spring. Officers were David Percival, President; Robert Renslo, Vice-President; Vera Miller, Secretary; Minnesota Hoyt, Treasurer; and Ruth Ann Nord, Historian. The adviser was Mr. Voorhees.

RADIO GUILD

The goal of the Radio Guild is to set up a radio station on campus which would publicize college events at the Smog and the Cafeteria. Plans for this project are now being formulated and in the near future we should see some progress toward that goal. This club works in conjunction with the speech department, and presents broadcasts over radio station KWNO regularly twice a month. The officers were John Davis. President; Gerald Ziebell, Secretary; Scott Streater, Technician. Miss Magnus and Mr. Reidelberger were advisers.

GAMMA DELTA

Lutheran college students of the Wisconsin and Missouri Synods belong to Gamma Delta. This club endeavors to conserve and develop Christian faith and to encourage Christian action among college students through Bible discussions, programs, projects, and inter-campus fellowship among students of the Lutheran faith. Activities for the year included a Halloween party, a hayride, Christmas caroling. Religious Emphasis Week, and the sponsoring of the winning Homecoming float. This year the local chapter was host to the Lakes Region Leadership Conference. The Lutheran Student Association, LSA, is a fellowship of students working together, dedicated to Christ and His church. It supports an active program consisting of five points: worship, study, service, evangelism, and recreation.

The Newman Club of Winona State College serves a threefold purpose: educational, social, and religious. This triadic aim is carried out mainly through weekly meetings held at the newly acquired Newman Center. The activities sponsored by the club included classes explaining the Mass and the Sacrament of Marriage, and the Tri-College Dance held annually each Spring. WESLEY FOUNDATION

The objective of the Wesley Foundation, the Methodist student organization on campus, is to develop a better understanding of the Christian faith. At Christmas the club brought joy to shut-ins with their caroling. Y.W.C.A

Remember the big sister who helped you so much when you were a confused freshman? She was a member of the Y.W.C.A., and she was participating in one of the projects of the Y.W.C.A. at Winona State. The annual BigLittle Sister Tea is something which few girls forget. Other projects of the Y.W.C.A. include bake sales and decorating a Christmas tree in Richards Hall Cafeteria. Participation in these activities helps to fulfill the goal of the “Y," which is to develop the social and spiritual aspects of of a girl's personality. CIRCLE K

Circle K is one of the more recent organizations, but it is already a very active service group on campus. The motto of the club is "We build." This year the club sponsored a club night which helped acquaint new students with the clubs on campus. Circle K also conducted a "straw vote" and a "Get Out and Vote" campaign. Members of the group help in the publicity for the school by acting as guides for visiting groups and by participâting in recruiting trips. The Rifle Club is a newly formed club on campus which will promote rifle, pistol, shotgun and archery marksmanship. The club plans to participate in inter-collegiate match rifle competition. Kappa Delta Pi, a national honor society in education, is open by invitation to college juniors and seniors who rank academically in the upper fifth of the institution and have completed a required number of credits in education. Among their activities were speakers on the International Education Theme, an Honor Tea for freshmen and sophomores on Valentine's Day, and the selection of seniors to the Purple Key. Drama is the synonym for Wenonah Players at Winona State. The members carried out their style of drama in superb performances in the three plays produced this year: The Crucible, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Candida. Each one was one to be remembered in the history of drama at Winona State College. Winona State Speech Association gives valuable service to the people in the department. The interesting monthly meetings and speakers are only one of the services. The District Three Speech Festival was ably managed by the Speech Department. This allowed the majors and minors to gain valuable experience in judging and in the other work of conducting a speech contest. ACADEMY OF SCIENCE

The Academy of Science pursued its general purpose of furthering interest in science by having guest speakers at their meetings, previewing films, attending various Science Fairs, and taking tours. Each year the club sponsors the Winter party. AAale students compete on teams to win the name of Fair Lady for the girl oftheir choice. The Business Club was organized for students majoring or minoring in business who desire closer contacts with the business field. The activities of the club include field trips to industry, guest speakers, movies, discussion sessions, and college service projects. The Amateur Radio Club was formed to promote amateur radio activity on the campus of Winona State College. This year the club held a demonstration in the Smog in which messages from the students were sent to points all over the United States with almost one-hundred per cent delivery. WARRIOR HOPES FALL SHORT

The Warriors completed a successful season with four wins, three losses, and one tie. After opening the season with non-conference victories over Stout State 13 to 0 and Eau Claire 14 to 0, the Warriors then turned to conference battles and tied Winona's arch-rival Mankato in a game hampered by mud and rain. The Warriors got back on the winning road at Maxwell Field with a well deserved 26 to 6 victory over the Beavers of Bemidji. This game marked the first time this year a team crossed the goal line against thé defensive-minded Warriors. The Warriors then left on a long roadtrip to Houghton, Michigan, and lost a heartbreaker to Tech 7 to 0. In the homecoming game against the Dragons of Moorhead, our team won the statistical battlebut lost the ever important battle of the scoreboard 2-0. In the final conference game of the season the Warrior defense gave up only two TD's of the five given all season, but this was too much as the Warriors lost 14-6. The Warriors ended a three-game losing streak in the final game of the season by defeating the U. of Illinois, Chicago Branch, 28-6. Overall the Warriors scored 87 points while limiting opponents to 35 points. In conference the Warriors outscored their opponents 32-29 while outscoring non-conference opponents 55-6. The Warriors' defense was tops in NSCC and was rated nationally. Four WSC gridders named to the All-American team were Bob Wolf, Gale Sprute, Dave Rislove, and Dave Glazier. Gale Sprute was named to the second team Little All-American defensive unit. Seniors on the squad were Dave Glazier, Merlin Zimmer, Ellsworth Simon, Lance Carroll, Jon Parker, and Bernie Pieper.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Winona State cross-country team, hampered by lack of depth and experience, posted a mediocre 6-3 record. The team started strong by posting victories over Wartburg and Carleton Colleges, but they lost in following meets by small margins. The meet with La Crosse State was part of the homecoming festivities of 1960. The team finished second in the Northern States College conference; Mankato was first. Dick Anderson, WSC's only entry, was runner-up in the Amateur Athletic Union's Northwest Cross-country Open at the University of Minnesota. The harriers were led in their meets by Dick Anderson, John Finnegan, and John Modjeski. Other members of the team were Jim Slifka, Harry Davis, Jerry Freseman, and Allen Grimes. This was the third season of cross country as an intercollegiate sport at Winona State.

WARRIORS POST 14-9 RECORD BEST SINCE '51

Coach Joe Gerlach's varsity basketball team finished a 23 game schedule with a very impressive 14 to 9 record, the best Winona State record since 1951. The Warriors were a young ball club this year, lacking the really big man who has become a necessity to college teams nowadays. However, high team scoring overcame this handicap in most games.

Four returning lettermen, Sprute, Stellpflug, James, and Goetz made up the nucleus of the young team. Other members of the team were Dick Papenfuss, Jim Vinar, Clarence Brodt, Charles Weisbrod, Arlan Klinder, Al Bronson, Gavin Grob, and Lyle Papenfuss. The defense used by the team was basically man-toman, but it caried to meet particular situations- Winona State's Ken Stellpflug finished second in the individual NSCC scoring race; Goetz came in seventh.

Prospects for next season look good as not a single man on this year's roster is a senior. The 1961-62 season will see a more mature and experienced basketball squad at Winona State.

The Warriors "B" Basketball team, coached this year by Arthur DeWitz, included sophomore and freshmen prospects and transfers and may very vyell make a big difference in varsity basketball for next year. The team played various city league teams and other collegiate "B" squads and showed a great deal of potential. The Winona State wrestlersclimaxed a fine season under the capable direction of coach Bob Jones, when they returned from Colorado with fourth place honors in the National Wrestling Tournament. The team finished the toughest wrestling schedule in Winona State's history with a 7-5 record. The grapplers were "Champions" of the Carleton College Tourney, and placed second in the Northern States College Conference.

In the N.A.I.A. meet, Jerry Wedemeier regained the heavyweight championship which he had held as a Freshman. Ray Haworth and Dave AAoracco both took third place honors and Larry Willis placed fourth. Next year, the National Tournament will be held at Winona State.

On the Warriors' schedule were meets with such outstanding teams as those from Bloomsburg (Pa.) State Teachers College, defending N.A.I.A. champions; Iowa State and Iowa State Teachers; and Northern Illinois.

SWIMMING

Winona State tankers in 1961 connpiled the finest record in Winona swimming history with a 10-0 record in the dual meet season and seventh place in the NAIA. This was Winona State's first trip to the NAIA tournament. The Winona mermen saw many records broken this season.

The A squad was made up of 21 members, all of whom shared in this victorious result. The first competition this season, a telegraphic meet with Grinnell, caused added interest. The co-captains of the WSC team were Wayne Fatchett and Mike Hull. Other lettermen returning from the previous year were Jerry Clingman, Robert Renslo, Jerry McCartney, Dave Percival, and Dick Theurer. The team competed in 11 different events during the season. The enthusiasm and spirit of the group along with the skill and experience may result in increased suecess in the future. The swimmers who were named All-Americans of NAIA were Wayne Fatchett, Jim Hauser, Mike Hull, David AAarqueson, Jerry Miller, Stuart Miller, Bob Renslo, Dick Schleicher, and Jerry Ziebell.

DISPLAYING CINDER PROWESS

The Winona State track team under Coach Jones met a challenging season this Spring. With only four letter-winners returning from the previous year, Dick Anderson, AAarv Rouse, John AAodjeski, and Harold Perkingstacf, the team needed added experience and depth. They were assisted in their meets by outstanding Freshmen John Finnegan, Carl Grimes, Phil AAicheau, and Paul Blumentritt. In the 1960 season, the squad posted a 6-0 dual meet record and finished second in the conference.

This year the cindermen fell to Kentucky State and placed second in the triangular meet with AAorehead and Ballarmine College in early Spring meets.

BASEBALL

Ten Warrior lettermen and 42 candidates and a 29 game schedule greeted Coach Joe Gerlach for the start of the 1961 baseball season. The Warriors will be a veteran ball club except at first base where Lyle Papenfuss takes over and in centerfield where duty will be divided between Larry Joyo and Chuck Zane. The top Warrior hitters, Johnson, Grob, Klinder, and Rogneby, and mound aces Jon Kosadowski and Mike Sund will be returning from the 1960 squad. The Warriors will open their season with a southern trip, going first to Illinois to play Augusta and Wesleyan and then playing Loras on the return home. The Warriors then play Eau Claire, Iowa Teachers, St. Cloud, La Crosse at home before taking to the road to play Mankato and Carleton. The Warriors then come home to play River Falls, Stout, Loras, and Bemidji before concluding the season against Northern Illinois, Concordia, Moorhead and La Crosse.

The Warrior hopes for the future look bright as only three seniors Bob Rogneby, Jim Swanson, and Mike Sund dot the roster, but these three will be sorely missed.

PARTICIPATING ACTIVELY - INTRAMURALS

Intramural sports serve a definite and useful purpose in any school. They provide an opportunity to everyone interested in sports to play on a team in general season games and also a concluding tournament. This year's activity ineluded basketball, bowling, and softball. The CATS won the League Basketball Title, and the Pups, captained by Irvin Plitzuweit, were the champions of the WSC Intramural Basketball Tournament.

Coach M. Molinari had two letter winners on hand when he issued his initial golf team-call. The monogram men were Rich Gabrych and Bob Hogenson. Other WSC students reporting were Ray Hinkly, Dave Feindt, Dave Vail, Mike Voelker, and Gary Hatch. In 1960, the team finished third in the NSCC meet. Loss of several good players and lack of experience may hamper the team's results for this season.

WOMEN'S RECREATION ASSOCIATION

The women on this campus enjoyed a year-around sports program. Among the many activities of W.R.A. members were volleyball, basketball, bowling, and badminton. This year the club sponsored a college sports day, a Homecoming float, and a modern dance clinic. Besides participating in activities within our college, teams were sent to other college play-days. The Women's Physical Education Club cooperates with the Department in promoting the interests and welfare of Physical Education at W. S. C. It is open to all majors and minors in this field.
