BHS football team wins national ‘spirit’ award.

The maps are drawn. The fields are set. The date would appear to be locked in. Turns out Texans may get a chance to vote this year after all. The May 29 primary date is nearly three

months later than the initial March 6 date. The extra time to deliberate and last week’s additional filing period didn’t have a major effect on the county’s races, with one big exception. Following former Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald’s resigna-

tion from that post last Monday, three candidates have thrown their names into the hat to replace McDonald when terms start next year. Democrats Ed Rivers and Joe Ternus will face off in the May 29 primary, with the winner running against Republican Paul Pape in the gen-

Area aquifers and their future conditions were the subject of hearings in recent weeks as an environmental group and a water marketer, usually foes when it comes to groundwater, both brought their legal and technical teams to bear on the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District. The hearings, held in Milano, were part of the Desired Future Conditions (DFC) petition process that had the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) hearing from End Op, a water marketing company headed by former Williamson County Commissioner Frankie Limmer, and Environmental Stewardship, a Bastropbased non-profit environmental group fronted by Steve Box. Both parties had challenged the DFCs developed by Groundwater Management Area 12, which is made up of five groundwater conservation districts, including Lost Pines. The DFCs are a snapshot of how they want water levels, water quality, overall volumes

and spring flows to look for the area’s aquifers 50 years from now. Both End Op and Environmental Stewardship are in agreement that the drawdowns, or water removed from the aquifers, are incorrect as noted in the present DFCs. The similarities end there though, as End Op wants more drawdown and more water along with the permits they need to establish water contracts and negotiate deals. Environmental Stewardship wants less water removed from the aquifers, saying the DFCs as presented will lead to a shortage of water for future generations and to declining rivers and streams. At the time the petitions were filed, Lost Pines General Manager Joe Cooper said the hearings would probably delay the district’s Managed Available Groundwater data that’s needed to create a water management plan that might lead to a lifting of a pumping and drilling moratorium that’s been in effect since March 24, 2010. Commissioners delay replacement By ERIC BETTS Staff Writer The Bastrop County commissioners court met Monday for the first time since former county judge Ronnie McDonald resigned from his post as the county’s top official to make a run for Congress. The three commissioners present – commissioner precinct two Clara Beckett was absent from the meeting – designated commissioner precinct three John Klaus as their presiding officer and signatory for all documents approved during Monday’s meeting. The commissioners didn’t take any action regarding the naming of an interim county judge who would serve until next January, when the successful candidate who is elected in November assumes the office. Three citizens spoke during the

citizens’ comments portion of the meeting to recommend the commissioners name Pati Jacobs to the vacant seat, citing her work on water issues and the fact that she, like McDonald, is a Democrat so the appointment wouldn’t mean the seat changed party hands. The commissioners said they hoped to name McDonald’s interim replacement as soon as possible, perhaps as soon as next week so the new judge would be available to preside over the next regular meeting March 26. Green Expo names sponsors for event Balcones Resources, Bluebonnet Electric and Lost Pines Toyota have stepped forward to be major sponsors of the Heart of Texas Green Expo at the Bastrop Convention Center June 8-9. All three of their administrators live in Bastrop. Balcones Resources has just completed construction of a state-of-the-art recycling facility located off Highway 290. Their CEO, Kerry Getter, says that this new plant was con-

structed in response to the continuing growth of their company as well as their receiving a contract to be a primary recycling company for the City of Austin. Mr. Getter noted that their sponsorship of the Expo “… is an opportunity for Balcones to ‘live our values… to transform waste into resources, create recycling programs, and foster environmental stewardship.” Bluebonnet CEO Mark Rose wants to continue to show central Texans how

Go fish on March 17 For the ninth year, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is sponsoring learn-to-fish clinics in the Lost Pines State Parks. Because of construction and restoration efforts in Bastrop State Park, the class on Saturday, March17, will be at the pond in Buescher State Park. This free class is geared toward kids, but all ages are welcome to participate. The class starts at 9 a.m., but attendees can come any time after that. Hint: the earlier you arrive, the more time you have to fish. Parents or a responsible adult must accompany their children. There are five learning stations, including safety, knots, casting, habitat and fishing regulations. Kids get a goody-bag and small gifts after completing each station activity. After visiting all stations, they get a diploma and cool fish pin. Then everyone gets to fish. You

can bring your own fishing equipment or use the rods, reels and bait the park supplies. Parents may want to bring lawn chairs. No fishing license is necessary in Texas state parks. At noon, there is a drawing for the kids, where fishing tackle will be given away. The class is over by 12:30 p.m. Dress appropriately for the weather and closedtoe shoes are strongly suggested. There is no preregistration and no charge for this class, but park admission rates apply. There will be four more classes this summer, including at Bastrop State Park, June 9 and July 14 and at Buescher State Park on June 16 and July 21. For more information, call the Buescher State Park office at 237-2241 or Bill Brooks, GO FISH! program coordinator at 581-0377 or email Bg brooks@mail.utexas.edu.

Bluebonnet is providing futuristic methods of energy production and distribution as well as empowering consumers of their services. Toyota’s local owner Carlos Liriano and his staff will be providing opportunities for Expo visitors to see their new facility on Texas 71. The Green Expo weekend will feature more than 50 speakers and panels and demonstrations. They include a presentation by city managers and may-

ors of Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville of their newly developed “sustainability” programs. John Ikerd from Missouri is the keynote speaker, followed by talk show host Howard Garrett (“The Dirt Doctor”) from Dallas. Friday, the first day of the event, will focus on issues for professionals, such as city planners, architects and green builders but the public is invited to attend. Woman celebrates 100 By Eric BEtts Staff Writer Annie New still remembers the first airplane she ever saw, an old biplane with a light frame and wings made out of canvas. “It had two wings stacked like this,” she said, demonstrating with her hands, as though her audience wouldn’t believe such a thing had ever existed. You wouldn’t blame her for thinking so, nor for the sense of wonder she felt that’s kept the memory with her for so long. New turns 100 later this month, and the first airplane was newer to her when she was born than the original iPod would be to a child born today. New was born in Bluff Springs on March 21, 1912. She says she spent both her girlhood and the years after her marriage on farms. “I did everything that had to be done,” she said, from cutting fodder to picking cotton. She and her husband, Talmadge Edgar New, raised mostly cotton, corn and cane while also rearing their five children. Like the aerospace industry, farming has seen in-

It takes the work away from people.” Despite the changes she saw in it, her life on the farm is something New says she thinks back on more and more often these days, and one she admits she misses. “I really do,” she said. “That’s the only life I ever knew.” New’s husband passed away in 1969, and, soon after, she moved with her daughter to the Bluebon-

net Acres neighborhood in Cedar Creek, where she’s been in a position to watch her family grow, adding new grandchildren and great-grandchildren to their ranks, including one born within the last couple of weeks. “I can’t even name them all,” she says, of her descendants, with a laugh. New says she doesn’t really have advice for living as long as she has. “They tell me that I’m sent for a purpose or that I wouldn’t live so long,” New said, “but I don’t know what it is.” Fortunately for her, she still has time to figure it out.

Man dies in trailer collision By tErry HAgErty Assistant Editor A Bastrop man died last week, the day after being involved in a wreck on Texas 71. On March 6 at approximately 8 p.m., Bastrop police were dispatched to an accident on Texas 71 near FM 20. A tractor-trailer truck and a Nissan Xterra collided while both vehicles were

westbound in the inside lane of the highway, police chief Michael Blake said. The driver of the tractortrailer rig was uninjured, but the driver of the Xterra, Eugene Louis Pfeiffer, 74, was pinned inside of the vehicle due to severe frontend damage, Blake said. He said Pfeiffer had run into the rear of the 18-wheeler. Blake said Pfeiffer, who was wearing his seatbelt, seemed “alert and respon-

sive to emergency services personnel on the scene.” The Bastrop Fire Department used the jaws-of-life to free Pfeiffer from the vehicle and he was transported to Breckenridge Hospital in Austin by PHI Air Medic Services. On March 7, police were notified by the hospital that Pfeiffer died as a result of his injuries, but did not release his name until Monday.

ELECTION: Four Democrats, WATER: Groups discuss future of local aquifer levels and calling into question three Republicans vie for Pct. 4 Continued from page A1 the technical merits of the Continued from page A1 Four Democrats and three Republicans will run for the commissioner precinct 4 spot, currently held by Vivian Dildy, who was appointed after her husband Lee passed away last May. Michael Flowers, Liston Crim, Paul Mogonye and Keith Joesel will compete for the Democratic nomination, while Chris Cannon, Ron Jay and Gary “Bubba” Snowden will run in the Republican primary. The precinct 4 constable race will also see four Republican contenders. Sal Abreo, Paula Birran, Ron Lundrigan and Michael R. Knight will run in the primary for the right to face incumbent Democrat Roy Pruneda in November. One of Democrats Matthew Henderson and Alex Z. Peña won’t have to face a Republican opponent in their race for constable of precinct 3, while the incumbent constables in precinct 1, Dan Hall, or precinct 2, August “Gus” Meduna won’t have a challenger in either the primary or the general election. Elsewhere on the ballot, 423rd District Court Judge Chris Duggan and tax assessor-collector Linda Harmon, both Democrats, are also running unopposed. Looking at races that extend beyond Bastrop County, McDonald will

face a trio of South Texas Democrats, Rose Meza Harrison, Murphy Alade Jundaid and Jerry J. Trevino, in the primary to represent the 27th Congressional District. The winner of the primary will face a Republican challenger from the field of Don Al Middlebrook, John Grunwold, incumbent Blake Farenthold and Trey Roberts. In other congressional races, Eddie Traylor and Michael McCaul are running as Republicans for the District 10 seat, while Tawana L. Cadien and William E. Miller Jr. are running as Democrats. The 17th congressional district will be contested by Republicans Bill Flores and George W. Hindman. In state legislature races, local resident Colin J. Guerra is running as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Tim Kleinschmidt for the Texas House of Representatives, District 17 seat. Incumbent Kirk Watson will try to hold on to his State Senate seat against Republican Guy Fielder. Three Republicans, Carson Campbell, Derek R. Van Gilder and Chris M. “Matt” Dillon, are vying to be district judge of the 21st Judicial District against Democrat Sam Z. Damon. Republican Reva L. Towslee Corbett is running unopposed for another term as 335th Judicial District judge.

COUNTY: Citizens want Jacobs to fill Judge McDonald post Continued from page A1 tractors, TFR Enterprises and SAIC, to cut, haul, grind and monitor trees that need to be cleared out of the right of way of state highways. County engineer Ronnie Moore told the court the number of trees was approximately 4,000. Moore said the county would serve as a pass-through for funds going from TxDOT to the contractors, and would not be responsible for any of those costs. However, since TxDOT’s funding for the operation is coming, not from FEMA, but the Federal Highway Administration, Moore said all the materials cleared on behalf of TxDOT would have to be kept separate from the piles the county is generating. To that end, additional site preparation will be performed on the Texas 71 debris processing site in order to keep the piles separate. n Heard an update from Seton representatives on the new Patient Prescription Access Program. Seton community health

coalition manager Liz Johnson told the court that the first several months of the PPAP program were mostly spent raising awareness among indigent patients and healthcare providers, but in the last several months they were beginning to see more patients applying for medication. So far, Johnson said, 70 patients had submitted nearly 225 applications for their prescriptions. n Approved a submission of a proposal to the US Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women for their Grants to Encourage Arrest Policies program on behalf of the Family Crisis Center. Executive director Sherry Murphy told the court that non-profits like the center weren’t allowed to apply for the funding, but a local government body like the county was. The county would serve as the fiscal agent for the funding, which would help the crisis center improve reporting and tracking of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault cases.

End Op

End Op’s Frankie Limmer and his partners lease groundwater rights covering 17,000 acres in Bastrop and Lee counties, all within the Lost Pines district. The water marketer filed for permits for 14 wells on July 25, 2007, which if granted, could lead to the pumping of an estimated 56,000 acre feet of water per year from the Simsboro aquifer. At stake for Limmer and End Op are deals to sell water to burgeoning developments along the Interstate 35 and Texas 130 corridors. In December 2009, Limmer signed a letter of intent with the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority to sell them groundwater – up to 45 million gallons a day, according to published reports. In late 2010, Bill West, general manager of the GBRA, secured a loan from the TWDB for $2.5 million for research and development for a proposed state pipeline to carry that water to urban areas along the I-35 corridor. The 100-mile pipeline system has been estimated to cost $400 million. At their hearing on Feb. 29, End Op, represented by attorney Stacey Reese of McGinnis, Lochridge and Kilgore, told the TWDB that the DFCs are unreasonable because the DFC process used by GMA 12 did not provide sufficient opportunity for stakeholders to comment on them. End Op also claimed that the drawdown is vague, ambiguous and “inherently arbitrary to be an effective management goal.” End Op also claimed the DFCs negatively impacted private property rights. To support its claims, End Op attacked the science used by LPGCD through presentations by hydrologist Mike Thornhill, managed available groundwater data and through revised modeling and test well information. End Op says they have spent $3.5 million on test wells and on research on pumping from the Simsboro aquifer.

The Environmental Stewardship team gets together to prepare their final rebuttal at a Texas Water Development Board hearing in Milano last week. From the left are, Steve Box, director of Environmental Steardship, Eric Allmon, attorney, Cindy Loeffler, Water Resources Branch Chief of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Myron Hess, Manager of Texas Water Programs and attorney for the National Wildlife Federation. The water marketer also said the DFCs did not provide for prudent development of the states groundwater sources and discouraged economic development. Days before the hearing, the Texas Supreme Court made a ruling that local water authorities would have to reimburse private property owners for water that they would not be allowed to pump from their land, effectively complicating the job that groundwater conservation districts are legislated to do. End Op noted the ruling as another reason the DFCs were unreasonable.

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship, established in 2007 and based in Bastrop, is listed as a water resource, wetland conservation and management charitable organization. Steve Box is the executive director, researcher, spokesperson, publisher and technical expert. He holds a master’s degree in environmental science and ecology and a bachelor’s degree in zoology. Environmental Stewardship’s case was based in part on the effect that pumping would have on the Colorado and Brazos rivers leading to a reduction in river flow. Environmental Stewardship’s attorney, Eric Allmon of Austin, was joined by Cindy Loeffler, Water Resources branch chief of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

and Myron Hess, manager of Texas Water Programs and attorney for the National Wildlife Federation. The group presented technical information on modeling and pumping from George Rice, a groundwater hydrologist from San Antonio. Much of the Environmental Stewardship presentation pointed to the relationship between underground aquifers and streamflow, and that’s where studies from Texas Parks and Wildlife researchers added weight. Box and his associates pointed to scientific studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and the TPWD that show how the Colorado and Brazos rivers gain water from the aquifers and if the aquifers are over pumped the loss of groundwater discharge into the rivers will be environmentally detrimental. The group also raised concerns about the effect pumping would have on environmental flows, which could reduce river flows to sensitive bays and estuaries, impacting the very lucrative sporting and recreational industries in the state.

Lost Pines

Lost Pines, represented by David Lein and Helen Foster, attorneys for Graves, Dougherty, Hearon and Moody, used similar tactics against both End Op and Environmental Stewardship, claiming the water district’s science was sound

opposition. Lost Pines also questioned the relatively new science of streamflows as brought forth by Environmental Stewardship. “The relationship between groundwater and surface water should be considered in DFCs,” testified Cooper. “However, the current groundwater availability model does not allow for it.” Cooper’s statement acknowledged that there is a relationship, but that no allowance for it exists in the state’s models that are used to arrive at DFCs. Lost Pines utilized technical presentations by John Seifert Jr., of LBGGuyton Associates and Andrew Donnelly, a hydrogeologist with Daniel B. Stephens and Associates to prove their modeling data and disprove the claims of the petitioners. Cooper said that having two opposing petitioners was good for the district, giving them an opportunity to defend the DFCs that were already approved by the TWDB. Lost Pines said the DFCs were done legally, with a long list of stakeholders, including End Op and Environmental Stewardship and were derived as statutory obligations required. The conservation district also stated that the drawdowns were reasonable and prudent use of the state’s water resources.

TWDB

Four members from TWDB attended the hearing, including attorney Joe Reynolds and Larry French, director of groundwater resources at TWDB. “We will review all the proceedings and give them all their due weight as we go through our investigation,” Reynolds said at the hearing. Reynolds said the TWDB board would present findings from the hearings on June 21. Results will be sent to LPGCD and the petitioners on June 14 and will be posted to the TWDB website on June 15.

SHERWOOD: Popular medieval fest continues until April 1 Continued from page A1 Last weekend’s substantial rains did not seem to dampen the enthusiasm of participants or attendees. By Sunday afternoon the weather had cleared and the sun was shining. The fair, held on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to dusk, opened Feb. 11 and runs through April 1. “The cold and wet does not dampen our

spirits, because we are Englishmen of Nottinghamshire and this faire is our expression of our souls,” read one post on the faire’s website. The words nicely summarize the dedicated spirit of those who don costumes ranging from nobles and merry maidens to imposing-looking Vikings. There is also much humor in the air at the Sherwood Forest Faire. “Hi, I’m Marquise

Zany from Zanzibar,” said Mark Reed, who was dressed as a jester in an exquisite costume as he greeted passers-by. Reed said he “hails from Pennsylvania” and travels the U.S., attending Renaissance-style fairs. When a photographer asked if he could take a “mug shot” of Zany, he raised his drinking mug, placing it inches from his face and said, “You mean like this?”

Sherwood Forest Faire’s own magazine tells of the fun that youth and adults will experience. The interaction between attendees and those who dress up is magical. “I love all the people you meet doing this,” said Daniel Bufford, dressed as a pirate. “It’s really fun to interact with people and put a smile on their faces.”

All About CedAR CReek

Cedar Creek Park gearing up for busy spring season As spring is rapidly approaching, park director Rick Brearer had this to say, “Hopefully you have been enjoying our county park and I have much to share with you regarding some improvements, projects, and what’s in store for our little piece of paradise…another Eagle Scout project in the Cedar Creek Park has recently been completed. John Huerta from Boy Scout Troop 533 constructed an “Information Shack” located at the park circle. The intent of this structure is to provide a place for information boards to be placed and for a specific entry/exit point in the park. Eventually we will have an entry gate on each side of the structure which will be opened each morning and secured each evening. The shack will also be a place where park maintenance personnel can get out of the extreme cold or heat for breaks during work days. There are several additions to this little building planned, such as a security light, mounting of a first aid kit, and the bulletin boards for general information on both sides. There will be improved landscaping around the site as well. I haven’t heard much regarding our annual spring family festival for this year. I believe it is being planned for April and when I receive more specific information I will

Our Butterfly Discovery Garden is getting ready for a major makeover and lots of planting. The project unfortunately hit a standstill and if you are interested in helping with this important project, please do not hesitate to call me at 321-3994. The recent rains we have been blessed with sure helped things grow in the park and we’ve got a lot of green that we usually don’t have in January. I was very excited to break out the mowers re-

cently to clean things up and make the park more presentable as we head into the spring season. Lots of work and maintenance to be done. That’s it for now as far as updates. I am very proud to be taking care of our wonderful Cedar Creek Park and look forward to meeting more of our community members in 2012. Please do not hesitate to stop me while I’m working in the park to chat and feel free to bring a treat for Angel…. as if she isn’t spoiled enough.”

Not Rocha’s

Well folks, I messed up. That is not Rocha’s towing going in at FM 812 and Hwy 21. It is a holding facility for Insurance Auto Auction who is moving out there from Dalton Lane in Del Valle. Their home office is located in Illinois but they have other locations nationwide. The yard here is open to dealers only on auction day, which is every Tuesday, but some of the other yards in other states are open to the public. This facility should be open by May of this year. It has been delayed because of the rain. My apologies to both companies for giving out the wrong information.

Campground is and let me tell you what, ya’ll have had me running all over Bastrop County looking for it. One lady said “well I hear it’s in Cedar Creek somewhere.” Really! Do you know how big Cedar Creek is? Another one said it’s probably the new one at 21 and 71. Nope, not that one either. Well, I finally ran it down and it’s not in Cedar Creek. It’s in Bastrop proper. It’s the gated RV Park on the river, on the right, before you get to the Texas 95/21 intersection. So there you go. As I go this week, I want to say how much I enjoy your emails and questions. Please keep them coming to cedarcreek50@yahoo.com and I will do my best to find you answers. Also, how about sending me some birthdays and anniversaries of our folks out here at the “wide spot in the road.” Next week’s recipe - Biscuit Cinnamon Rolls. God bless.

She has turned her considerable energies to helping the mission of the Boys and Girls Club, which is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” She wrote to me with this message, “Thirty artists from Bastrop and Smithville have painted beautiful metal stars for us, and each is an individual work of art. We are auctioning them during the evening of March 17. Guests will enjoy wine, listen to the Academy Jazz Players and eat wonderful hors d’oeuvres and desserts prepared by chef Mike Morphe. The event will be held at the Rock-CRanch from 6-9 p.m., and tickets will be $20 per person or $30 per couple. It will be a lovely outdoor venue serving a very worthy cause. Lots of business news

Rockin’ Threads is moving from its location on South Main St. to 1010 Main, north of Chestnut Street. The building is owned by Kathryn Lang and was the previous location of Anita’s Restaurant. Chestnut Square has been sold and is tentatively scheduled to reopen in May as the Lost Pines Cinema 8. No more driving to Austin to see a film! The new owner is Mark Schulman, and the Schulman Family are the oldest theater owners in Texas and, I have been told, the third oldest in the United States. Word is that they will keep the bowling alley and the grill, not sure about anything else, and they will add four screens. The Book Basket at 913 Main St. is now more than just a great book store. When you visit Carol Pennell, you can now enjoy coffees and teas, pastries, and desserts. There will be tables and chairs and the back patio for your leisurely enjoyment of Carol’s many reading choices along with the new tasty offerings. Their new hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Magpie Trading Company is moving from its digs on Pine

Street to 909 Chestnut St., near the corner of Jefferson Street. We will soon see Marti’s smiling face in a much larger space. She always has unique antiques and collectibles. One of these days, I will find my vintage boots there. Creative Tana Morris is now sharing space with Mary Broussard at the Bastrop Picture Frame Emporium, 926 Main St. She specializes in Victorian and shabby chic offerings along with some handmade pieces as well. When I dropped by recently, Tana was still getting everything set up, so I am not sure what treasures she will have there. And last, but certainly not least is the goings on at 1112 Main St. In two weeks the Bastrop YMCA will open the doors there and have their very own location. Ever-enthusiastic Y director Terry Moore says, “You will see programs like Kinder Dance, Youth Needlepoint, drawing and art classes held there along with some of our fitness classes. The Indoor Cycling classes which are currently being held at the Kerr Center will begin at the new location as of April 3, followed by the Monday and Wednesday 12:15 p.m. yoga class. Female basketball players ages 60 to 65

Janice Wirtanen of Cedar Creek and Becky Beaver are seeking recruits to play some serious senior basketball. Janice says, “I live in the Cedar Creek area, and I have played on a women’s senior Olympic basketball team for the last ten years. Becky Beaver and I are trying to form a Central Texas team for women ages 60 to 65. We prefer not to play against 50-year-old ‘youngsters’ anymore. We have the option of playing with our age group on a team from San Antonio or a team from Dallas. Since gas prices are going up, and we have a gym in which we can practice on Sundays in Austin, we want to form a team for our age group here.” If you are interested, please contact Becky Beaver at bbeaver@ beckybeaverlaw.com for more information.

The Popcorn Time

Upstart is reviving its monthly movie series “The Popcorn Times” on the second Wednesday each month. The first film will be “Animal Kingdom” at 7 p.m. on March 14 at the UMAC, 1800 Linda St. It will be free for Up-

start members and $5 for those who have yet to join. “Animal Kingdom” was written and directed by David Michod, an Australian who brings insight into the modern urban drug scene, and what it’s like to be born into a criminal enterprise. Opening in 2010, the woman who plays the matriarch of the clan was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar last year for her riveting performance. The release from Upstart goes on to read, “’Animal Kingdom’ is a nuanced, honest, violent film. It stars James Frecheville as the conflicted youth, Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton as two of the leaders of the gang, and Jacki Weaver as the brains of the organization. “All are welcome, popcorn will be provided and a discussion will be held after the film led by Karen Sterling, who edits “the Popcorn Times” and who is movie critic for the BCAT TV show of the same name.”

Former Bastrop High School pitcher Corey Knebel is putting together another strong season for the Texas Longhorns baseball team.

Knebel back to his saving ways

The University of Texas baseball team may be off to a slow 6-8 start this year in its non-conference slate of games, but that hasn’t stopped former Bastrop High School pitcher Corey Knebel from picking up right where he left off in June. Knebel, the “Collegiate Baseball” Freshman Pitcher of the Year and Louisville Slugger All-American, has allowed just two runs and eight hits while striking out twelve of the 39 batters he’s faced. He has four saves and a 1.80 ERA so far during his sophomore season. Last year, Knebel had 61 strikeouts in 38 appearances for the Longhorns. He finished the season with a 1.13 ERA and 19 saves, tying the Texas record for saves in a season. Texas took on Texas State Tuesday evening in Austin, and opens its conference schedule this weekend with a three-game slate against Oklahoma in Norman.

Bastrop beats columbus to open tourney

The Bastrop Bears opened their own tournament with a 6-4 win over Columbus last Thursday. Columbus got on the board first, scoring twice in the first inning off starting pitcher Devin Weiss, but Weiss and the Bears’ defense rallied to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the next four innings. Bastrop got one back in the first on a Clifton Hendrix steal of home plate, and another in the third when Hendrix’s groundout scored Bradley Klaus. Bastrop broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth. Logan Allen gave the Bears the lead after a Columbus error. Blake Zimmermann’s single brought home Klaus and Hendrix after that. Thomas Solomon, pinch running for Zimmermann, scored the final run on a Dillon Becker single. Columbus looked to creep back into the game late, scoring once in both the sixth and seventh, but Weiss saw the game out to pick up the win and struck out the final two Columbus batters. New year, same story for this intra-county softball rivalry. The Elgin Lady Cats took an 11-1 win over the home team Bastrop Lady Bears Monday, extending their record to 16-4 on the season. Elgin pitcher Jenna Wing shut down Bastrop’s bats, striking out 11 and allowing two hits in her six innings pitched to earn her sixth district win. Elgin’s bats got off to an early start, with a Shelbi Swenson double scoring Abby Prinz and Bailey Alanis in the top of the first inning. Swenson later scored on a Haley Sewalson single. After Wing struck out the side in the bottom of the inning, Alanis added to Elgin’s lead with a double that scored Chelsea Everage and Kaci Olson. Elgin got three more in the third, with Prinz, Everage and Olson scoring again. The Bears earned their run in the third with some timely hitting. Though they finished the game with just two hits off of Wing, but they got both of them in the bottom of the inning to rob Wing of a shutout. Gisella Paranich led the inning off with a line drive double to left field. Wing then coaxed a pair of pop-outs from Bastrop’s lineup before Becca Roe lined a 1-1 double to center, bringing Paranich home for the score. Bastrop pitcher Lillian Raemsch, who came on in relief for Sarah Waldron Waldron in the third, managed to quiet the Elgin bats over the next two innings, holding them hitless through the fourth and fifth. Cedar Creek picks up district win The Cedar Creek Eagles boys soccer team rode a dominating defensive performance to an important district win Friday, beating Giddings 1-0. Kenny Wells scored the game’s lone goal from the corner of the six-yard box off a Ricky Sanchez assist in the 33rd minute of the first half. Cedar Creek peppered the Giddings goal, outshooting the Buffaloes 7-2 in the first half, but it was their defense that shined. Once Wells gave his team the league, the Eagles didn’t allow another Giddings shot through the rest of the game.

That defensive performance allowed Cedar Creek to get away with some lax finishing. Of the Eagles’ 13 shots, including 5 each from Jose Ortiz and Jo Jo Olivares, only four were on target. Still, that’s more than Giddings could say; neither of their two attempts troubled Cedar Creek goalkeeper Chris Venegas. The win combined with Lehman’s draw with Hays moves the Eagles into a points tie with the Lobos for second place in the district. I follow college basketball much more than I actually watch it. During the season I could have told you who the best teams were at any given moment, and now that it’s tournament time I’ve seen enough Sports Center and read enough Sports Illustrated to give you an educated guess on some mid-major sleepers. But I’ve probably actually watched fewer than five of those teams play. I saw that game on the aircraft carrier, which was pretty awesome, but couldn’t even be bothered to make sure I was home for either UNC-Duke matchup. Like the vast majority of Americans, my interest typically picks up right about now, or rather this past Sunday each year, when the bracket is announced and I take my annual pilgrimage to the online college basketball backwaters looking for obscure Canadian seven-footers playing in the America East Conference or a team from some town in Appalachia that doesn’t even appear on the map that shoots 45 percent from three-point range. I go through this late season cramming because filling out a bracket is fun: It’s fun to pick the same 5-12 upset that everyone else picks and be right anyway, fun to pick Duke to lose in the second round every year because they deserve it and absolutely no fun at all to have your Final Four sleeper get knocked out in the first round by Cleveland State. At one point, I had a five-year run of correctly picking the national champion, and that was fun too. I don’t think I ever had the best bracket any of those years, but it was something to hang my hat on. In a way, the bracket is a necessary addition to the way we consume sports now. In the prehistoric days of three and four channels, people took what sporting events they could get; they were a rarity, a treat, like going out for ice cream with the family. Now, the options for what to watch are limitless. A quick scan of ESPN’s online streaming service and I can find professional lacrosse, conference tournaments for everything from the Western Athletic Conference to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, girl’s high school basketball from Tennessee, the Clemson Tigers’ pre-NFL draft Pro Day and soccer from seven different countries, including this one. The bracket and the accompanying pools give us a reason to choose a particular one of those sports – college basketball – and care more about it than otherwise just as fantasy football gives us a reason to choose the NFL. It provides an impetus to watch or follow not just the marquee matchups or the games that involve our favorite team, but every last one of them. We watch games when we could be doing something else, housework or time with our families or, the horror, actually working. There’s not a single iota of my being that cares whether or not Long Beach

Without a bracket, it’s a nothing to me, and no amount of the reportedly brilliant Long Beach point guard Casper Ware can change that. So I’m going to try something this year. I’m going to watch the tournament without filling out a bracket, without giving myself the extra impetus to care that it provides. I probably won’t watch as many games, but

when I do it will be for good basketball, not because I need this one to make up the two-game deficit between me and my father-inlaw. Instead of giving up after the first weekend when my bracket is ruined, I’ll get that serendipitous feeling right from the very start. I’m not so old-fashioned as to suggest that this is the right way or even a better way to enjoy the NCAA tournament. I just think it’s a different way, and one that’s worth trying, at least this year. No research, no drafts,

no moving around Final Four combinations until we get one that feels right. It’s been tough at times – it’s almost automatic at this point – but I’m standing firm in my decision to skip the madness this year. But I will say that my friend, who I traditionally help with her entry in her office pool each year so she doesn’t have to do it, has Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and big-time sleeper Murray State in her Final Four. You didn’t get it from me.

Olson helped Everage get home, giving the Lady Cats their ten-run cushion, which Wing maintained by allowing just one runner on a hit by pitch in the bottom of the sixth.

Elgin’s offense finished with five doubles and four stolen bases on the afternoon. The Lady Cats’ next game was Wednesday, as they took on the Cedar Creek Lady Eagles at Cedar Creek High School. They’ll play Hutto next Tuesday in Elgin at 7 p.m. The Lady Bears will meet their district rival Lady Eagles on Tuesday at Bastrop at 7 p.m.

Play celebrates life of Smithville native Grace Jones By Denis McGinness Staff Writer Grace Rosanky Jones, who grew up in the Smithville area, was a pilot in World War II, a runway model, savvy businesswoman and aficionado of haute couture. Her legendary life and character is being remembered and celebrated in a two-act drama at the Salado Silver Spur Theater on March 16 and 17. Playwrights Laura Aarsvold and Diana Richardson will feature highlights from the life of the colorful Texan who started out from small-town roots and traveled the world, was a hit in New York and ended up in Salado where she helped foster an arts movement in the city through her exclusive couture shop. Jones was born in Waelder, a fourth-generation Texan and the great-granddaughter of a German immigrant

Football team receives national spirit award The Bastrop High School football team has been selected as the 2012 Section 6 recipient of the National High School Spirit of Sport Award by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The National High School Spirit of Sport Award was created by the NFHS to recognize those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the spirit of sport that represent the core mission of educationbased athletics. Beginning on Sept. 4, 2011, Bastrop County was ravaged by the worst single wildfire ever recorded in the state of Texas. The wildfire burned more than 34,000 acres of land, destroyed more than 1,600 homes and claimed the lives of two people. With a population of 7,218, the city of Bastrop has 2,900 housing units. Along with the rest of the state of Texas, Bastrop County was in the midst of one of the worst droughts in history and heavy winds accelerated the movement of the fire. The members of the Bastrop High School football team were not immune to the devastation. Four coaches and 11 players lost their homes in the fire. School and extracurricular activities were canceled, including the Friday night matchup between Bastrop and Austin Akins High School. Many of the evacuated residents, which included several coaches and players from the high school football team, were staying in community shelters not knowing they would have a home to which to return. Once the fire was contained, after more than a week of destruction, the recovery process began and members of the football team assisted in the recovery. ESPN.com profiled several players who had volunteered their time to work in shelters for those displaced by the fire. The student-athletes stacked clothing, took donations and helped displaced families while they focused on the recovery efforts. Football eventually resumed on Sept. 15, 11 days after the start of the wildfire and Bastrop head coach Gerald Perry would use that day’s game against San Marcos High School as a way to honor those who fought against the fire as well as bring healing to the residents of Bastrop with a return to normalcy and a distraction from the events that had rocked their world. The Bastrop football team ran out onto the field with a banner that read, “Out of the ashes we rise.” Volunteer firefighters and emergency responders were honored during a halftime ceremony. And in what was truly an emotional day for all those involved, Bastrop High School claimed a 4823 victory dedicated to the community of Bastrop. The high school would win one more football game the remainder of the season. However, for a community rocked by tragedy and devastation, their team had offered them a chance to forget about the pain and to be proud of what they had accomplished as a community in the face of adversity. The fire was not declared fully extinguished until Oct. 10, 2011. The NFHS divides

The states in Section 6 are Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Nominations for this award were generated through NFHS member state associations and reviewed by the NFHS Spirit of Sport Award Selection Committee composed of state association staff members. While the national winner will be recognized July 8 at the NFHS Summer Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, the section winners will be recognized within their respective states and will receive awards before the end of the current school year.

Rodriguez at Bugle Boy

Love and family have always been sources of inspiration for critically acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Carrie Rodriguez, but never have they featured so prominently than on her brand new release Love and Circumstance,” a covers album that includes songs written by her father, and once performed by her great aunt. Rodriguez’ journey from teenage violin student to touring the world with the likes of Chip Taylor (famed songwriter of “Wild Thing”), Lucinda Williams and Alejandro Escovedo, has resulted in a prodigious output of recordings - eight albums in as many years - for the young musician; with the new album, Carrie relies on others to handle the songwriting duties, she provides the interpretations. Besides the contributions from her immediate family, “Love and Circumstance,” includes compositions from her extended musical family and friends, including John Hiatt/Nick Lowe/Ry Cooder/Jim Keltner (aka

Sudoku

3/15/12

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you s q u a r e o ff , s o sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test.

Here’s how it works

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.
