ABOUT US

The Enugu State Multicultural Association of Canada was founded over 10 years ago. It was founded as a direct consequence of the need for a sociocultural association committed to the promotion and advancement of members' wellbeing and Enugu States Igbo cultural heritage. The association is run effectively as a family unit and has created a strong support system for our members during their personal lifecycle events. We have also celebrated together, grieved together and rendered financial assistance within our limited resources. MEMBERSHIP Enugu State Multicultural Association of Canada membership is open to all Enugu State indigenes residing in Toronto and other cities in Canada. We are always open and offer welcoming hands of co-operation to other cultural associations and new Canadians (immigrants and refugee/asylum seekers) and Canadian citizens of Nigerian descent. Meetings other than the bi-monthly general meeting are held in members individual homes. This is a deliberate policy that helps foster a family atmosphere as members get to know each other’s places of abode and be more inclined to relate well with each other.

Enugu State is a mainland state in southeastern Nigeria. Its capital is Enugu, from which the state created in 1991 from the old Anambra State - derives its name. The principal cities in the state are Enugu, Agbani, Awgu, Udi, Oji, and Nsukka.

Geography Enugu State is one of the states in the eastern part of Nigeria. The state shares borders with Abia State and Imo State to the south, Ebonyi State to the east, Benue State to the northeast, Kogi State to the northwest and Anambra State to the west. Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State, is approximately 2½ driving hours away from Port Harcourt, where coal shipments exited Nigeria. Enugu is also located within an hour's drive from Onitsha, one of the biggest commercial cities in Africa and 2 hours drive from Aba, another very large commercial city, both of which are trading centers in Nigeria. The average temperature in this city is cooler to mild (60 degrees Fahrenheit) in its cooler months and gets warmer to hot in its warmer months (upper 80 degrees Fahrenheit) and very good for outdoor activities with family and friends or just for personal leisure. Enugu has good soil-land and climatic conditions all year round, sitting at about 223 meters (732 ft.) above sea level, and the soil is well drained during its rainy seasons. The mean temperature in Enugu State in the hottest month of February is about 87.16 °F (30.64 °C), while the lowest temperatures occur in the month of November, reaching 60.54 °F (15.86 °C). The lowest rainfall of about 0.16 cubic centimeters (0.0098 cu in) is normal in February, while the highest is about 35.7 cubic centimeters (2.18 cu in) in July.

History The name of State derives from its capital city, Enugu. The word "Enugu" (from Enu Ugwu) means "the top of the hill". The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1909, led by a British mining engineer, Albert Kitson. In his quest for silver, he discovered coal in the Udi Ridge. Colonial Governor of Nigeria Frederick Lugard took keen interest in the discovery, and by 1914 the first shipment of coal was made to Britain. As mining activities increased in the area, a permanent cosmopolitan settlement emerged, supported by a railway system. Enugu acquired township status in 1917 and became strategic to British interests. Foreign businesses began to move into Enugu, the most notable of which were John Holt, Kingsway Stores, British Bank of West Africa and United Africa Company. From Enugu the British administration was able to spread its influence over the Southern Province of Nigeria. The colonial past of Enugu is today evidenced by the Georgian building types and meandering narrow roads within the residential area originally reserved for the whites, an area which is today called the Government Reserved Area (GRA). From being the capital of the Southern Provinces, Enugu became the capital of the Eastern Region (now divided into nine States), the capital of now defunct Federal Republic of Biafra, thereafter, the capital of

7

East Central State, Anambra State, (old) Enugu State, and now the capital of the present Enugu State through a process of state creation and diffusion of administrative authority.

Politics The State Government and the Local Government are the two levels of government in Enugu State and in all other states of Nigeria. Sullivan Chime is the current executive governor for the whole of Enugu State. He was elected by the people of Enugu State in April 2007[4] and was sworn into office on May 29, 2007.[5] The governor is above a group of commissioners who he has placed as heads of ministries that oversee various portfolios such as Health and Housing; both the governor and the commissioners form the Executive Council of Enugu State. Government House, Enugu is where the government of the state is based.

Economy Economically, the state is predominantly rural and agrarian, with a substantial proportion of its working population engaged in farming, although trading (18.8%) and services (12.9%) are also important. In the urban areas trading is the dominant occupation, followed by services. A small proportion of the population is also engaged in manufacturing activities, with the most pronounced among them located in Enugu, Oji, Ohebedim and Nsukka.

Energy Electricity supply is relatively stable in Enugu and its Environs. The Oji River Power Station (which used to supply electricity to all of Eastern Nigeria) is located in Enugu State. With the deregulation of electricity generation in Nigeria, and the proposed privatisation of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), the State Government would assist private investors to negotiate the take over and reactivation of the Oji Power Station. This is more so with the proximity of the Enugu coal mines to the power station, a driving distance of about 20 minutes. There are also traces of crude oil in Ugwuoba, in the same Oji-River Local Government area of the state. The state will also negotiate with investors interested in investing in the coal mining in Enugu. The coal industry used to be one of the biggest employers of labour in the state and the state is looking to attract investors in the industry.

Education Every community in Enugu State has at least one Primary/Elementary school and one Secondary school, funded and run by State Government. There are also large numbers of private nursery, primary and secondary schools in Enugu State. Nigeria's First Indigenous University, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is located in Enugu State. The state also hosts the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Institute of Management and Technology (Nigeria)Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Federal Cooperative College, Oji River (FCCO), Enugu State College of Education Technical, Enugu, Caritas University, AmorjiNike, Renaissance University, Ugbawka; Federal Government College Enugu, Federal School of Dental

Medicine The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) is located in Enugu State, as is the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine. In addition to numerous private hospitals and clinics in the State, there are seven District Hospitals at Enugu Urban, Udi, Agbani, Awgu, Ikem, Enugu-Ezike, and Nsukka and at least one health center or cottage hospital in every one of the seventeen (17) Local Government Areas and thirty nine (39) Development Centres in the State.

PREMIER OF ONTARIO Premier Dalton McGuinty was born and raised in Ottawa’s Alta Vista neighbourhood. He credits his parents with teaching him the values and ethics that guide him as Premier. They passed on their commitment to education, family and community service to each of their 10 children. Dalton’s mother is a retired nurse living in Ottawa and his father was a teacher and professor who served as the Ottawa South MPP until he passed away in 1990. After graduating from St. Patrick’s High School, Dalton worked as an orderly at the Rideau Veterans’ Hospital where he formed the basis of his strong values on health care. Dalton holds a law degree from the University of Ottawa and a science degree from McMaster University. Before entering politics, Dalton practised law at an Ottawa South firm and taught at Carleton University. He met his wife Terri, an elementary school teacher, when they were both still high school students. They have been married since 1980 and have four grown children. In 1990, Dalton won the Ottawa South seat formerly held by his father. During his first term, he successfully fought to bring paramedics to Ottawa. In opposition, Dalton rallied with the community to save CHEO’s cardiac unit. Saving the unit was one of his first actions as Premier. CHEO now houses the provincial Newborn Screening program for all Ontario newborns. Dalton will continue to work hard to improve our schools, our hospitals - the things that matter most to our families.

MAYOR OF TORONTO Rob Ford was elected Toronto's 64th mayor in October 2010 after serving 10 years as Councillor for Ward 2 (Etobicoke North). Since he was sworn in as Mayor on December 1, 2010, Mayor Rob Ford has led a very busy Council agenda. In very short order, Mayor Rob Ford eliminated the Personal Vehicle Tax, putting $64 million back into taxpayers' pockets. He also declared the Toronto Transit Commission an essential service, protecting riders from future labour disruptions. Leading by example, he reduced his office budget by $700,000 and Councillor's tax-free expense accounts saving another $900,000 and led Council to freeze its own salaries. Mayor Rob Ford contracted out garbage collection in half the city for a savings of $11.5 million per year for seven years. By bargaining hard, he won new fouryear collective agreements with the city's major unions, achieving unprecedented flexibility to improve customer service while giving taxpayers the best value for their tax dollars and saving over $100 million. He also fulfilled another election promise, by recognizing Emergency Medical Service as an essential service. Faced with a major leadership crisis at Toronto Community Housing Corporation and a broad loss of public confidence in the agency, Mayor Rob Ford acted decisively to remove the board of directors and senior management team and replace them with a skills-based board that has made major progress in restoring public and tenant faith in North America's second-largest social housing provider, with 164,000 tenants. Born in Etobicoke, May 28, 1969, Mayor Rob Ford learned the importance of community service and political involvement from his father, the late Doug Ford Sr. who served as MPP for EtobicokeHumber from 1995-99. A strong believer in building better communities, he is a past volunteer at the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal, Terry Fox Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Mayor Rob Ford's passion in promoting the positive development of youth and his own experience in playing high school and university-level football is why he spearheaded an initiative to bring back high school football. In 2002, Mayor Ford founded the highly successful Eagles football program at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School in North Etobicoke where he has remained the Head Coach of the Junior and Senior Teams. In order to ensure all Toronto youth have an opportunity to play football, he established the Rob Ford Football Foundation which has helped fund football programs at high schools across the City, including Newtonbrook Secondary School, Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, Sir Sanford Fleming Academy, Westview Centennial Secondary School, Forest Hill Collegiate, Eastern Commerce Collegiate, Lester B. Pearson Collegiate and C.W. Jefferys Collegiate. Mayor Ford has also helped ensure youth between 14 and 19 have the opportunity to participate in youth football programs through the summer with the Rexdale Raiders. As a principal of a successful family business, Deco Labels & Tags, employing over 200 people in North America, with plants in Etobicoke, Chicago and New Jersey, Mayor Rob Ford brings a "bottom line and customer service" focus to city government. His top priority is customer service excellence. Mayor Rob Ford and his wife Renata are lifelong residents of Etobicoke, where they are currently raising their children Stephanie and Douglas.

EDITORIAL “Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it.” ― Frantz Fanon

Enugu State Association Canada, has since its birth been striving to unite all men and women of Enugu descent living in Canada. To achieve this, they have continuously met once every two months in each other’s homes, and later in a designated venue. We have also grieved and supported one another whenever there was a loss of a loved one in our community. In the same vain, we have celebrated with one another, whenever there was a baby dedication, wedding, birthday or other reasons to celebrate. We have come to a point in the life of our organisation, when we feel that our generations yearns for us to take charge of our destiny and chart the future of our young sons and daughters, and those yet unborn. It is for this reason that we, the entire members of ESAC, sought to engage the authorities in the country where we reside-Canada, and our country and State of origin Enugu State through its agencies and departments, with a view to discovering ways in which we in the diaspora can propagate the investment potentials which abound in our fatherland Enugu State. Our vision is that if we attract investors and they are able to establish companies in our home state of Enugu, this will lead to employment opportunities for our young ones and for people living in our father-land Enugu Through this engagement which we hope to achieve by the Economic Summit we would be contributing our own quota and lending support to the extremely tremendous work being executed by our dear Governor, His Excellency Sullivan Iheanacho Chime in Enugu State. This Economic and Development Summit is the first in a series of summits planned on an annual basis. We welcome you, all delegates from all over the world to Toronto. May your reason for coming be fulfilled. Thank you.
