WSA PATRON STATEMENTS LI YONG, UNIDO Director General UNIDO’s mandate is to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development in our Member States. Over the decades, industrial development has proven to play a key role in development, and in particular in poverty reduction through the generation of income-earning opportunities. Industrial development that is sustainable and inclusive also holds the potential to address environmental and climate change issues. At UNIDO, we strongly believe that the realization of SDG 9 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will have positive spillovers on the attainment of the other SDG’s. The future of manufacturing and the evolving industrialization process is undergoing a change, particularly during this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). UNIDO foresaw these changes - in 2016, our Industrial Development Report estimated that benefits arising from cutting-edge technologies would be between 16 and 35 US dollars per year by 2025. To ensure smooth transformation to 4IR, it is imperative that Member States foster technological learning, innovation and entrepreneurship – especially among youth and women. This is confirmed by the findings from our Industrial Development Report 2020 indicating that when the right capabilities are in place, new technologies offer huge potential to advance economic growth and human well-being and to safeguard the environment. UNIDO is actively engaged in supporting entrepreneurship development in our Member States. Among the many ongoing entrepreneurial activities, a key initiative that has had tangible results is our Entrepreneurship Curriculum Programme (ECP). Through this programme, UNIDO assists authorities in developing their own curriculum with syllabus, teachers’ guides, textbooks, monitoring and evaluation tools, assessment guidelines, training ECP teachers, piloting and ultimately embarking on a nationwide rollout of an entrepreneurship curriculum with the full involvement of the national authorities. The ECP supports inclusivity by engaging with girls and boys in rural and urban areas. Entrepreneurship is included as a general subject in secondary, technical or vocational schools on a nationwide basis. Universities and colleges serve as centres of excellence to support national efforts to promote entrepreneurship and technology absorbing capacities. The ECP empowers youth to acquire personal qualities such as self-confidence, innovation and creativity, the ability to take initiatives, as well as the willingness to take calculated risks and to collaborate. These competencies help them select and shape their career path as employees or entrepreneurs. Gender Empowerment and Equality is an important component in our work. Our efforts in this area is guided by our “Strategy for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women: 2020– 2023” that systematically helps us to plan, steer, deliver and report more effectively on progress towards its gender equality commitments at the global, regional, national and organizational levels.
UNIDO stands ready to support the role of entrepreneurship to drive towards the vision that we want as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

WSA PATRON STATEMENTS Leonore Gewessler, Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Republic of Austria We live in an ever-more digitalized and connected world with automated devices and algorithms influencing our daily lives in one way or another. This development is set to continue - whether we like it or not - but it is for us to decide how we shape it. Young inspiring innovators participating in the World Summit Awards teach us that digitalization can contribute to a more sustainable future; that it is possible to turn the digital revolution we are facing into climate action. They show us that digital transformation can be shaped to ensure it supports transitions towards more sustainable societies and towards taking climate action. What it takes is inventiveness and courage to walk off the beaten track. Qualities also decision makers sometimes need to be reminded of. I would like to thank the winners of the World Summit Awards for this reminder – for showing us that digitalization offers countless opportunities to help solving the challenges of the 21st century, if we take the right steps – now.
PETER HANKE, City Councilor for Finance, Economics, Digitization and International Affairs, City of Vienna Vienna shall become the capital of digitization in Europe. We understand digitization as a rapid development that should serve the people, which is why we have to actively shape it. In Vienna, we do this together with our citizens, no matter how young or old they are. In the most liveable city in the world, everyone must have access to the benefits of digitization. Efficient and effective administrative structures are also very important to me. Whether it be to save costs, or to save the citizens’ time. To achieve this, we want to make greater use of opportunities and technologies. The WSA, as a global initiative linking digital with social, fits perfectly to the city of Vienna and we are happy that the event is now back in our city in 2020.
MOEZ CHAKCHOUK , Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO UNESCO is committed to harnessing digital innovation and transformation to attain the Sustainable Development Goals. Technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence provide important opportunities to ensure inclusive development, based on human rights. We must, as the theme of this congress underlines, hack the gap, and ensure that marginalized communities, as well as youth and women, are empowered with the necessary tools to actively create a future that is sustainable, diverse, and inclusive. Today, women and girls are 25 percent less likely than men to know how to leverage digital technology for basic purposes, four times less likely to know how to programme computers and 13 times less likely to file for technology patent. At a moment when every sector is becoming driven by the rapid technological evolution, these gaps should alarm policy-makers, educators and everyday citizens. I salute the WSA Global Congress 2020, which begins on International Women’s Day, for putting women and girls at the heart of the discussion and ensuring that these technologies do not widen the digital and knowledge divides but are rather harnessed to reduce it.

WSA PATRON STATEMENTS SEBASTIAN KURZ, Federal Chancellor of Austria, Republic of Austria As a transformative force, digitalisation plays a crucial role in our status as a future hub of innovation and business. There are countless ways that society can benefit from the positive impact of digital innovation. Exploiting the opportunities of this immense technological progress is one of the most important tasks in ensuring a successful, sustainable future. The United Nations has also demonstrated a commitment to this task as part of its Sustainable Development Goals. However, digitalisation also poses certain challenges that we must tackle over the long term. In this regard, particular importance is attached to developing a high-performance infrastructure to bridge the digital gap through digital education, strengthening the country’s position as a business location by supporting companies during the process of digital transformation, or disseminating technological content and offers. Austria is already among the EU pioneers in certain areas here. However, the Federal Government has set itself the goal of becoming one of Europe’s leading digital nations. Everyone in our country ought to benefit equally from this effort, whether they live in urban hubs or rural areas. The World Summit Award acknowledges the work of exceptionally creative young entrepreneurs from over 180 countries worldwide, awarding prizes in recognition of their outstanding digital concepts and practices. The commitment demonstrated by these young entrepreneurs is crucial to ensuring that modern technology has a positive impact on our society while also promoting equal opportunities. The active contribution of these skilled young people also serves as an example for later generations, showing that we can deal with the challenges of digitalisation responsibly and in the best possible way, now and in the future. I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to all the winners. Thank you for recognising digitalisation as a driving force for the long-term implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and for making such an important contribution towards achieving these aims. MARGARETE SCHRAMBÖCK, Minister of Digitalisation and Economics, Republic of Austria The Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs aims to further improve Austria as a business location, to promote growth and ensure a stable upswing. To develop the business location, considerable endeavours in the area of research and innovation are still necessary, and efforts must be made to spread digitisation in all economic and social areas. Both are top priorities for the new Austrian Federal Government, and they are centrally coordinated by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs. All activities toward digital transformation are combined in the “Digital Austria” scheme (www.digitalaustria.gv.at/EN). Currently we are working on new “strategic action plans on digitisation”. The aim is to bolster Austria’s role as a leading digital nation in order to guarantee and increase prosperity, job opportunities and quality of life in the long term. Modern technologies offer enormous opportunities and require entrepreneurs to fully unlock their economic potential. The World Summit Award presents the most innovative young people from more than 180 countries together with their outstanding digital projects, each with the capacity to make a deep impact and improve our society. I would like to thank all participants and winners of this year’s Award for their courage and patience in working on new digital solutions for a better world.

WSA WELCOME STATEMENTS BERN SPALT, CEO, Erste Group Bank Welcome to Erste Campus, headquarters of Erste Group Bank and a thriving, open venue in the heart of Europe. Having created George, the largest pan-European digital banking platform, we at Erste Group believe that meaningful digital innovation can improve the financial lives of millions. Our original purpose, for more than 200 years now, has been to democratise access to finance. This is the most direct way we know of empowering people in our region. In our current context of social polarization, this purpose has become more relevant than ever -- and technology will help us broaden financial inclusion and financial education. For more than a decade, Erste Group has been fostering social banking activities across Central and Eastern Europe through a combination of financial solutions, education and mentoring. It is perhaps one of the most important things we can do in a region where millions of people are still left behind, at risk of poverty. But it is also true to say that if we are to transform things on a meaningful scale, we need to partner with multipliers and change makers. So we have engaged very energetically with NGOs and social entrepreneurs, and we are doing everything in our power to help them expand their services, outreach and impact. One thing is clear: finding practical solutions to today’s complex social problems can only be achieved by harnessing the power of networks. The World Summit Award – WSA Global Congress is known for connecting digital pioneers with societal impact and we are looking forward to hosting inspiring presentations, workshops and exchanges at Erste Campus in March 2020!

WINNERS INNOVATION PITCHES & WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS JURY VIENNA The 40 WSA Winners and 5 WSA Young Innovators already proved that their products are the most innovative solutions selected in the democratic and tough selection process of the WSA. Each winner had to first succeed in a local competition to prove their product to be the most promising from their country in the respective category. Each UN member state is eligible to nominate 1 product per WSA category. This year WSA received more than 400 submissions from over 100 countries. 100 international online jurors decided on a shortlist per category that was then presented to the WSA Grand Jury in Tunis, Tunisia. The Grand jury selected in long and democratic discussions the 40 WSA winners that have been inivted to the WSA Global Congress in Vienna. At the WSA Global Congress Vienna the winners pitched their products in front of a specially appointed experts jury. Each team had 4 minutes to convince the jury that their team is the most committed, their solution has the strongest impact and their pitch is the most entertaining. 4 minutes Q&A-Time were given to each presenter after their pitch. After the last presentation, the jury selected 1 WSA Global Champion in each of the 9 categories to be specially awarded on stage at the WSA Gala Ceremony. The WSA winners demonstrate the richness and diversity of local content and prove that digital solutions are a key for development.

WSA GALA AND AWARD CEREMONY Usually the WSA gala and award ceremony is one of the hightlights of the WSA Global Congress, awarding the winning teams with their highly deserved awards, but also announcing the WSA Global Champions. The WSA gala and award ceremony 2020 was supposed to happen on March 11th at the Viennese cityhall, with Guest of Honors from the Federal Government of Austria and other important stakeholders. Due to COVID19, the Austrian government announced on March 10th, that starting from March 11th all events with more than 100 persons need to be cancelled. WSA lived the entrepreneurial mindset - demonstrating flexibility and fast reactions to new challenges. Since all winning teams, jury members and international delegates have been accommodated at the Hotel Schani, WSA organized over night an improvised and small award ceremony at the lobby of the hotel - guaranteeing the safety and health protection of all guests, but honoring the winning teams. The Varietas ensemble enriched the experience with their beautiful music and Habibi & Hawara supported the evening with their delicious food.

WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS & FEEDBACK
Andrew Liebermann, Liebermann Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, USA ‚What a program!!! - Bringing together such an amazing group of people that are diverse in their expertise, yet united by a common belief about the power of ICTs to achieve global development goals. It was an honor to be a part of the Summit. Thank you so much for including me!. ‘‘
Winning Teams: ‚‚Thank you WSA for those great days spent with you back in Vienna. The congress, the events, all just very well organized and attention was simply the best. Very happy therefore to be winners and participate pitching with the judges , all mentors, and staff. Just excellent, I can not explain in words how wonderful you make us feel, and the lessons we take back home. ‘‘
‚‚My experience coming together with such an incredible likeminded group is invaluable. The platform itself is the most brilliant inspiring trampoline that launches, connects and amplifies the worlds best collective subconscious minds together.‘‘
‚‚We’re happy to have joined such a great and inspiring gathering of experts who drive innovation and sustainability, improve society, and impact the world in the best way possible. It was a pleasure for us to get familiarized with all the local and global initiatives that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and could be the right partners for our purpose-driven project. A million thanks to the World Summit Award for this being a comprehensive platform for communication and development. Let’s hack all the gaps together! .‘‚

WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS AND COVID-19 The WSA Global Congress took place during very difficult times, right at the beginning when the Corona Virus started to spread, companies started issue travel bans and politicians started to think about cancelling events. WSA constantly needed to change its planning and had to prove that it can react as quick as flexible, as expected from start-up founders. WSA Global Congress missed a few previously committed and confirmed speakers and winning teams due to the Corona virus, but could take place more or less as planned, with careful planning and procedures. Participants were asked to wash their hands frequently, report to the conference team any symptoms, avoid shaking hands, etc. Several guests re-routed their flights, avoiding to travel through Italy. Guests from South Korea and China had been tested before joining the event. The wonderful WSA moderator Ms. Rita Isiba, Isiba helped the audience to remember the important measures.
