INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES

President’s Report As the Academy enters its second 40 years, 2013 has been a time of significant growth and new initiatives. Our organization now has over 700 members, all of them key media professionals from around the world. Their presence and interest has enabled us to take several important steps for the future of the organization: In February, we held our first stand-alone Kids Emmy ceremony, attended by 300 people in New York City. The second International Emmy Kids Awards will take place on February 10, 2014 in New York. The International Academy and the US Primetime Academy jointly decided that our organization will take on major responsibility for judging and awarding Emmys to US primetime programs produced in a language primarily other than English. This is an important new activity for the International Academy and a significant recognition of the power of non-English language programming in the US market. We launched the International Academy’s new education initiative and will be piloting this course with students from around the world. The course, directed at people interested in learning the business of international television, is a combination of online learning and several days of classroom activity and media organization visits.

Even while all these new initiatives were being put in place, the basic activities of the Academy continue to thrive. We had well over 1,000 entries from around the world for our four Emmy competitions, including the one which culminates at the November Gala. In addition to that long time event, the Academy now holds separate ceremonies for Emmys for News and Current Affairs Programming, Digital Programming and, of course, Kids Programming. Our board and members meetings this year dealt with Academy business and industry issues and featured two prominent guests. At the March meeting, Academy Director Jonathan Miller led a wide-ranging discussion with News Corp’s James Murdoch about industry and world issues. Mr. Murdoch took our members through a perceptive countryby-country analysis of media opportunities and challenges. At our Los Angeles meeting in September, held at the Paley Center building in Beverly Hills, Paley President and Academy Director Pat Mitchell interviewed leading media innovator Anne Sweeney, the Co-Chair of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney/ABC Television Group. We have now scheduled dates and places for our very popular initiative, International Academy Day. Next spring, we will hold an Academy Day in Jerusalem, from June 11 to 14, which will be hosted by Academy Director Nadav Palti and his company, Dori Media Group. The organizers of this major event are planning meetings with leading media and political figures in the region and several outstanding cultural events. A year later, from June 25 to 28, 2015, we will hold an Academy Day in Rio de Janeiro in conjunction with the run up to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Our host,TV Globo, is a long-time and valued partner of the Academy and the host broadcaster for the Olympics. We will be welcomed by Globo’s Executive Team, headed by Globo CEO Carlos Henrique Schroder and its Director of Programming, Amauri Soares. As television around the world has become increasingly interdependent, the Academy has come to work with a wide range of distinguished partners. We present the Digital Emmys at MIPTV in partnership with the Reed Midem organization; we present the News Emmys in New York in an alliance with the National Television Academy’s own news awards. And, of course, we have a group of distinguished partners for the November Gala, the Kids Emmy Awards and our annual World Television International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014
