Essential Boards to Plan Your Wedding By Megan Spreer

Do you remember the episode of “Friends where Monica Gellar whipped out a completed wedding binder the day after she got engaged to Chandler Bing? She had a section for each aspect of her wedding day organized before she even had a ring on her finger. Shocking? Not really. Many brides have been planning their wedding day in their heads, at least, since they were little girls. There are brides of 2013 that are guilty of the very thing Monica did. Yet, we don’t call them crazy. We call them Pinterest-ers. What is Pinterest? The social network calls itself a virtual pinboard allowing you to organize and share all of the beautiful things you find online in one place. Find the perfect wedding dress? Pin the photo from the website to your Pinterest board. See a fantastic ceremony photograph you’d love to recreate? Pin it. You can pin photos from your favorite wedding websites into one, easy-to-navigate account through this social network. You can even repin items that you see on other brides’ boards. There are already hundreds of different wedding-related pins and pinboards on Pinterest, but this is our list of the five essential wedding boards every bride should have to help plan her wedding day.

5. The Color Inspiration Board One of the first questions you’ll be asked as a soon-to-be bride is about your wedding colors. While you may already have the color or colors visualized in your head, it may be useful to find some real-life photo examples to help illustrate your vision to cake decorators, bridesmaids and wedding planners. For this board, cultivate pins that showcase the perfect shade of periwinkle for your centerpieces or the best version of the

10

LaWrencedBRides 2013

chartreuse you’re looking to find. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a wedding-related pin either. You can pin artwork by a famous artist or a photograph of spring flowers. Cultivate things that inspire you and portray the world you want your wedding to represent. 4. Photos that Make You Swoon Pinning photos, photo styles and poses you love will not only help you narrow down a list of photographers, it will also help

you direct the photographer you choose the kinds of photos you love from other weddings. You’ll find a plethora of wedding photos floating around Pinterest from Save the Date photo ideas to ceremony shots to honeymoon photos. Once you gather a good amount of photos for this board (10 or more), pinpoint the photography style you tend to choose the most. Do you like the whimsical, ethereal photos with romantic blurs or do you gravitate toward bright, vibrant shots with lots of contrast? Determine your own artistic style and then start the search for a photographer. Make sure to do this early as some of the most talented shutterflies can book up quickly. Then, once you make your choice and book your date, show him or her some of the photos or poses that you’ve loved from other weddings. It will help any photographer plan your wedding day shots. 3. DIY Projects As any bride soon finds out, weddings can be expensive. If cutting costs is important to you, a DIY board is a no-brainer. However, if cost isn’t a factor for your big day, a DIY project or two could still be an excellent resource and the perfect way to incorporate your personal style into your wedding day decor. Pinterest is full of various types of do-it-yourself projects other brides have found around the Web. The best part about this is that most of these pins will link back to a tutorial of some kind that will spell out how to tackle each project. Pin more projects than what you expect to be able to tackle. This will give you many options when you finally choose which you’d like to do when time and resources may be scarce. 2. Decor Perhaps one of the most prevalent pin topics on Pinterest regarding weddings is decor. You will see decor ideas for

Where high design meets today’s green technology for the ultimate culinary experience.

ceremony locations, reception halls, outdoor celebrations, bridal showers and bachelorette parties. You’ll find centerpiece ideas, invitation stenciling, unique aisle runners, table top arrangements, edible adornments for your cake, and so much more. If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, don’t fret. It’s usually pretty easy to hire someone to take on the decorations you’d like to adorn your wedding day space. 1. The Dress (and Attire) Now we reach one of (if not THE) most important part of your wedding planning: the dress. On Pinterest, you will find gowns for virtually every type of bride in the world. The tricky part here is the fact that because brides all over the world are pinning their favorite gowns, some are not available in your area, which could lead to heartbreak. When searching already pinned wedding gowns on Pinterest, it’s best to use the social network as merely an inspirational tool rather than a shopping catalog. The same goes for when you’re looking for items for your wedding party. That being said, this board is by far one of the most important and the hardest for soon-to-be brides to resist. It’s also a great board to cultivate ideas on your favorite hairstyles, shoes, jewelry and your something blue. Pinterest has thousands of wedding pins and ideas to help you plan your day. This list of five essential boards is by no means meant to limit the number of boards you use to pin your wedding ideas as you navigate the world of wedding planning. In fact, it’s best that you have as many as what makes sense to you. Want a board solely dedicated to nail polish shades to wear on your big day? Go for it. Need a board dedicated to groom’s cakes shaped like armadillos? Do it. It’s your day. And it’s your Pinterest board.

Let cake them eat

12

LaWrencedBRides 2013

Let’s face it: after the brides’ dress, the most important item on a wedding guests’ mind is “what will the cake be like?” If the dress is the centerpiece of the wedding itself, then the cake takes center stage at the reception for sure. For most brides, however, this is the first time they’ve designed, ordered and served a cake to more than just a few people. How do you ensure enough cake for all of your guests? That the cake looks good in photos? That the cost won’t break your budget? First up, a trip to a bakery to visit with the cake professionals. At BellaRoca Designs, owners Joel Lopez and Desiree Liddell invite brides for a tasting and to talk about all aspects of the wedding. “What is your budget? How many guests will there be? Do you want a round or square cake? Do you want a top tier to save,” are all questions Lopez asks brides. Brides struggle with budget, flavors and the size of the cake, he says. For many, the initial cost is more than they expect, but he can help them work out how to make the cakes less expensive. Most baker/decorators encourage brides to collect pictures of cakes they like – from other weddings, magazines or online. “That really helps us bring out the personality of the couple,” says Kerry Ray, cake specialist at Hy-Vee. While many cakes reflect the personality of the particular couple, there are trends in cake décor, the professionals say. “We’re seeing a lot more simple designs, plain, but elegant,” Ray says. “We’re also seeing a lot that a natural and woodsy, using tree bark, sticks, etc. There aren’t a lot of roses or bells and whistles to them.” Lopez is seeing many brides who want KU Jayhawk-themed cakes, naturally, in Lawrence, but also many who want a smaller cake accented with cake pops that do double duty as a party favor for guests.

Allyson Fiander’s knows cake pops well – she owns Billy Vanilly, which specializes in cupcakes and cakepops, although it also makes traditional wedding cakes. Fiander says cupcakes offer couples more options. “They are more practical because you don’t have to have a server,” she says. “They also offer the couple the chance to choose as many flavors as they want and really tie into any theme they have.” Grooms’ cakes remain popular as well, becoming more and more personal to the couple, Lopez and Ray say. “We’ve done Jayhawks as Star Wars characters, a pheasant cake with a shotgun – they are sometimes really crazy,” Lopez says. Ray says grooms’ cakes used to be more formal, but have become less so in recent years and more and more reflective of the groom’s personality. “If they are into a certain team or a certain sport, that’s reflected,” Ray says. The major trend these professionals are seeing, however, is that couples are incorporating their own creativity and touches to the cake, making it an important part of the wedding and not an afterthought. “They are being really creative in what they are doing,” Fiander says.

Registering for gifts is one of the most fun things about getting married. It is one of the few times in life when you are expected to tell people exactly what you want in a gift and, for the most part, they will oblige you. Some things to keep in mind as you peruse stores and fill out your wish list: 1. Register at more than one store. This will give breadth and depth to your list and offers your guests more than one option of where to shop.

Some Lawrence-area businesses with wedding registries:

2. Make sure you have a wide price range of gifts. Yes, this is an opportunity to ask for things you’d never buy or be able to afford for yourself, but keep in mind that your guests have budgets, too. And some will be buying you a shower and a wedding gift, so they will be spending a lot on you.

3. Choose some gifts that are traditional, even if your tastes aren’t. Again, your guests will likely not all be like you. Your grandmother may want to buy you a blender or candlesticks, while your closest friends may feel comfortable with funky household items.

4. Don’t use anything until after the wedding. You don’t want to think about anything coming up that will keep the wedding from happening, but it’s best to wait. 5. Don’t EVER put your registry locations on printed invitations, save the date cards, etc. Invitations are requests for someone’s presence, not a gift request. 16

Flowers

Celebrate at the Adams Center

Choosing flowers for a wedding should be a fun, creative part of the planning process. Flowers add color and ambiance to any wedding and reception.

Plan your wedding or reception at the Adams Alumni Center located next to campus. ě #23 , (#-!# ě (7 !3#1#1 ./3(.-2 ě 31(%'3$.161" /1(!(-%

Some tips to help brides get started: • Set a budget. Flowers can be expensive and it’s easy to go overboard with how many you want. • If you don’t know what you like already, start looking through magazines, Pinterest pages or visit a florist to get ideas. • Keep in mind what flowers will be in season for your wedding date. Although most florists can get any flower a bride wants at any time of year, if you choose something that’s out of season for your area, your costs may rise considerably.

.1 ,.1# (-$.1,3(.-Ĕ 5(2(3 www.kualumni.org or call Laurie Doud at 864-9774

• Think about what role you want flowers to play in your décor. Do you want flowers for everyone in the bridal party, plus on pews or chairs, plus on an altar, plus every table at the reception?

#""(-% /'.3.%1/' 8 #(3' 9#!'-2*( '.3.%1/'8

• Remember that there isn’t a right or a wrong way to choose flowers. This is a great place to show off your creativity with color, flower variety, design, etc. • Consult the experts. Florists know their stuff. They know what’s practical, what flowers will last through a long day and what will really accent a wedding and reception.

Gone are the days when bridal bouquets and wedding flowers were centered on the color white. Today's brides use flowers to add a pop of color and creativity to the ceremony and reception. Free State Bridal Show When: February 16, 2013 Where: 1031 New Hampshire, Lawrence, KS Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact: (785) 331-2096 www.freestatebridalshow.com

• Research vendors. • Make a list of vendors you definitely want to meet – don’t waste time visiting photographers if you have already booked yours. • Take your checkbook so you can make a deposit at the show. • Carry a small purse or a cross body for comfort. • Come hungry! There will be plenty of samples of appetizers and cake.

• Ask vendors before you take any pictures in a booth – some won’t mind, many won’t want you to steal their work. • Leave kids at home – the show will likely be crowded and you’ll be more efficient without little ones or a stroller. • Take good notes about which vendors you talk with, book for your wedding, how much of a deposit you have made, etc. • If there is more than one fashion show planned, try to arrive for the second show – it’s likely to be much less crowded and you’ll be able to get a better seat.
