That payload was the Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V (DLR) Euglena Combined Regenerative Organic Food Production in Space (Eu:CROPIS, for short) research satellite. Euglena (Eu) is an Oxygen producing microbe and the aim of the research is to give astronauts access to fresh fruit and vegetables while on longterm missions, potentially leading to the assembly of Greenhouses in Lunar or Martian habitats.

The Eu:CROPIS satellite represents years of hard work by the Gomolzig team, having initially been tasked by DLR with the manufacture of the main Satellite structure in 2015. Specifically, the structure needed to protect the internal components during the high G loads, a full frequency range of vibrations, zero pressure and many other dynamic parameters of launch and operations. The outer skin, meanwhile, needed to provide protection from the impact of micro particles the satellite would meet at high velocity which would impart high energy on impact. Moreover, the structure had to be strong and light, being manufactured from aluminium. The design, prototyping and preproduction test structures were all subjected to a rigorous testing program, and in 2016 Gomolzig was given the go-ahead to manufacture the production structure for this important space mission. In full cooperation with DLR and in compliance with a very high-quality standard, work began. Production of sheet metal parts and the complex assembly were carried out at Gomolzig’s Schwelm facility, and once complete the structure was delivered to DLR.

Tecnam of Italy’s 11-seat P2012 Traveller aircraft was granted a type certificate by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in December. FAA certification is expected to follow soon and Tecnam hopes to start deliveries this year. The prototype P2012 made its maiden flight in July 2016 and two prototypes were used in the certification programme, flying a combined total of 600 hours. It included various sorties in extreme environments, in real icing conditions and very hot temperatures, and testing diving speeds and flutter conditions. The company stated that “particular care has been applied in cabin safety, evacuation and fire protection tests, going further than CS23 EASA and FAR23 FAA requirements and reaching commuter category standards (for up to 19 passengers). Tests were also performed in partnership with organisations such as Federico II University of Naples Wind Tunnel, Polytechnic of Milan for dynamic tests on seats, ice wind tunnel testing in New York, and lighting tests in Nuremberg, Germany. Head of the Tecnam’s design organization, Michele Oliva, said, “I am especially proud that we have successfully completed the project that the late Prof. Luigi Pascale started. We know we have achieved all that he envisioned in the development of this game changing aeroplane.” The certified aircraft configuration is a high-wing twin powered by two Lycoming six-cylinder TEO540C1A turbo-pistons. It is the first piston aircraft with electronic management of engine power, which, coupled with Garmin autopilot, enables a reduced workload for pilots and a better lifetime of the engines. The anti-ice, de-ice system chosen is TKS from Cav Ice, which makes the aircraft FIKI and capable to fly in all weathers. The P2012 superb versatility will open up new unexplored opportunities as a passenger aircraft, Medevac, VIP, Cargo and for any other mission. The original Carbon Cub SS, first sold in 2009 as a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA), was known for its performance resulting from an all-new lightweight design incorporating a 180 horsepower engine under the cowl. The SS became the best-selling LSA in America. “The industry, the media, and even the FAA told us all that an LSA could produce no more than 100 horsepower and fly at a maximum speed of 120 miles per hour,” said CubCrafters founder & CEO, Jim Richmond. “I didn’t see those limitations when I read the rule, and I knew that we could use a much more powerful engine and qualify for LSA.” Carbon Cub LSAs were thus equipped with the newly developed CC340 powerplant, producing 180 horsepower. The Carbon Cub is in its third generation and now has more thrust, carries heavier payloads, and “gets there more quickly.” The newest Experimental Carbon Cubs, equipped with constant speed props and more powerful engines, produce higher thrust-to-weight ratios than any airplane in their class, claims the company. EASA Event Reviews New Basic Regulation EASA’s Vienna Safety Conference in November included a meeting on the New Basic Regulation (BR) that governs aviation in then EU. The definition of “Commercial” and “Complex Aircraft” are gone from the BR and therefore the future scope of both Commercial and Non-Commercial Complex (NCC) regulation will be determined through upcoming rulemaking work, which IAOPA Europe welcomed as it could have “an active role in shaping the outcome.” “The new BR calls for a lot of work, clarification, explanation and thought over the next few years,” IAOPA concluded. IAOPA says the new Basic Regulation “holds a very welcome opening that invites pilots to call EASA for help with nationally divergent interpretations of EU regulations.” This is useful as European Member States are often seen not to apply European aviation legislation properly. IAOPA believes the new BR requires EASA to take a more active role. It says Article 62 on “Certification, supervision and enforcement” in the new EU Regulation 2018/1139 says (at Point 11) that the Agency may be called upon by citizens or businesses to remedy difficulties in the application of EU law at national level: It states: “Where differences in applying the rules cause significant difficulties, the Agency and the national competent authorities of the Member States concerned shall cooperate to address the differences and, if necessary, to eliminate them without delay. If the differences cannot be overcome, the Agency will present the matter to the Commission.” IAOPA is encouraging affected parties to make intensive use of this new possibility. “If you think that you are not being treated under current EU law in licensing matters, in the areas of flight operations, technology, maintenance and so on, then contact EASA. www.easa.europa.eu

IAOPA Europe criticised comments by NATS CEO Martin Rolfe who described as “perverted” calls for wider access for IFR flying, as if it should be an exclusive domain for airlines and business aircraft. “As a monopolist, Air Traffic Control is not allowed to select favorite customers, just because they pay the best. Of course, general aviation is also entitled to the best possible service. Light GA aircraft (less than two metric tons MTOM) are exempt from IFR route charges but, says IAOPA, “it is often forgotten that owners of these aircraft pay energy tax on the fuel that lands at the Ministry of Finance. The airlines, however, do not pay a single cent of energy tax - but air traffic control fees.” “The number of IFR flights in GA is declining and remains far behind its potential. Because the IFR training is too complicated, because the smaller airfields can only obtain IFR procedures with enormous effort, because the air traffic control does not want to hold capacities in the lower airspace ... there are many reasons. To stop this trend, we need to tackle these causes… “IFR flying contributes to an increase in flight safety and a more economical and weather-independent use of airfields and aircraft. We associations are now in demand and we will continue to seek dialogue with air traffic controllers and EASA.”

Diamond Aircraft received an order late last year for 60 training aircraft from the Saudi National Company of Aviation (SNCA). The order comprises a mix of DA42-VI twins and DA40NG piston singles. SNCA, a CAE authorized training centre, will take delivery of the aircraft over a five-year period. They will have Austro engines and Garmin G1000 NXi avionics.

EASA To Stage IMC Simulator Experiment At the EASA Safety Conference in Vienna last November, EASA said one of its first new GA safety promotion initiatives involves VFR flight into IMC conditions, with the Agency stating: “It is important that we help pilots to understand both how to avoid such situations through effective pre-flight planning and updating their weather knowledge, as well as exploring what actions a pilot can take when such a situation still would occur.” To this end EASA is selecting 12 pilots to take part in a simulator experiment where it will film them flying into IMC conditions in a scenario developed with flight instructors and weather experts. It will then interview the pilots about what happened and what they felt. Also, a second group of pilots will be provided with basic techniques to help them handle the situation, to highlight how pilots can be better prepared. Blockchain in Aviation Owner Trustee Transactions

What is blockchain, how does it work, and how could it be applied to aviation? Aircraft Guaranty explores the advantages and risks this technology could bring to aviation owner trustee transactions… Blockchain: the highly advanced, decentralized database technology behind every virtual currency you can think of and that most of us don’t understand. Blockchain has many companies in many industries making huge strides to be at the front of the digital revolution, including aviation. That isn’t regarding the use of virtual currencies (i.e. cryptocurrencies) like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and others, but the multitude of other applications for which blockchain technology can be used.

How Could it Work in Owner Trustee Transactions? Smart contracts, as previously referenced, are digital contracts agreed to by the parties involved. They are already used outside of blockchain technology, helping to efficiently authenticate and conclude agreements, but the increased ability for automation in conjunction with a distributed and neutral ledger offers specific benefits in owner trustee transactions. Not only can certain permissions be applied to the database and contract, but certain conditions as well, meaning if the pre-set ‘input’ requirement is met then the ‘output’ would be automatically enacted.

In last month’s article, ‘Cryptocurrency in Aviation Owner Trustee Transactions’ we looked at virtual currencies and their possible use in the aviation industry (and specifically in aviation owner trustee transactions). Following, we will focus purely on the technology behind it all, and what its potential use is in aviation owner trusts.

The Four Pillars of Blockchain

To review, blockchain has four main pillars. These include a distributed ledger, a decentralized database, immutable records and smart contracts (digital contracts of data agreed upon). This decentralized, encrypted database in the Cloud is shared by all its participants, is open to all (anonymously if desired), and provides access to view its immutable records (permanent and timestamped with each new transaction or alteration) but not retrospectively change. How Does Blockchain Work? For aviation owner trustee companies, and the large amount of data produced with every transaction, there is a big opportunity for blockchain technology to be applied and significantly streamline the process (possibly opening the door for the use of cryptocurrency in the future). A relatively brief synopsis of key blockchain capabilities will hopefully help to understand the potential benefits of digitizing and automating the aircraft owner trustee registration process and associated transactions. Increased accuracy and integrity are at the top of that list.

There are two main types of blockchain ledgers – ‘open’ in which participants are anonymous or ‘closed’ in which participants are identified. Confidence and trust in the accuracy of records is established because participants have access to the same information and consensus is needed to add new inputs (‘blocks’) which are connected to those preceding them. Closed blockchains are also referred to as ‘permissioned’ because certain parameters can be applied, allowing specific participants and limiting functions such as the ability to view, add to, or validate the ledger. While a closed blockchain database can limit access and functions, providing a more private transactional space, the same level of confidence in records applies due to their immutability. Either type can provide a way to carry out transparent, verifiable and secure transactions in real-time, but a closed blockchain database is more applicable to aircraft owner trusts, and even more so the use of ‘smart contracts’ within it.

This digital offer and acceptance of terms, and the resulting transactions still necessary to conclude it, would be immediately accessible to the parties, making the process almost fully automated and free of human error. Accordingly, the amount of time spent and the cost incurred retrieving and circulating documents, along with the fees associated with processing transactions would be greatly reduced. However, blockchain technology is still largely unregulated. Without consensus among lawmakers regarding its use and enforceability, there could be many pan-jurisdictional issues. There is currently a lack of integration in the aviation industry, too, which could make it difficult to fully realize the benefits of the technology. Aviation owner trustee companies must consider all aspects of the industry, especially security and compliance, so widespread regulation and integration of new technologies is important. However, unlike the use of cryptocurrency (given its currently volatile nature) the use of blockchain technology could mean more security, and a competitive edge. Aerial Survey Flying: What are the Market Options? Most of the world’s aerial survey fleet have an average age of around 50 years, with many exceeding 14,000 hours flying. However, there’s a good selection of aircraft manufactured today that meet the requirements. Lyndon Yorke discusses the market… Over the past few years, aerial survey operators have seen the useful life of an airborne sensor reduce from around 25 years’ service (as per analogue instruments) to about three years (for digital sensors) even though they are carried in aeroplanes that could be anything up to 50 years old.

Today the popular survey platforms like Twin Commanders, PA31 series, Cessna 400 series plus older Beech types can be expensive to support and operate and sometimes present additional surprises to operators in the form of ADs, SIDs and other mandatory requirements especially on the older pressurised platforms.

Today instigation of a new STC for a camera hatch has become a long-winded, highly expensive exercise requiring the services of a Part 21 design organization, which in turn needs to get a lot of complex data from the OEM’s typically metallurgical data, load factors and stress figures. Unfortunately, most OEMs no longer supply such data, particularly US companies who are concerned about longterm liability responsibility.

During the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s many of the aircraft types incorporated factoryinstalled camera hatches or pre-STC-era-approved/certified modifications. How things have changed today! camera hatch STCs that enable such modifications on both newer King Air and earlier models. Pilatus now offers a special missions version of the PC-12 which is slowly gaining market penetration. And then on the horizon there are some potentially interesting twins being developed in Eastern Europe. Aficionados of the DC-3 will be pleased to read that the Turbine powered/revamped version produced by Basler (the BT67) has proven to be a very valuable survey asset, especially for geophysical operations in the Arctic area and Africa. The VulcanAir P.68 series (ideal for low/medium altitude operations at lower speeds) has proven to be highly popular, and there are many survey P68 aircraft operating on survey missions worldwide. To complete the operating range Vulcanair has recently introduced a Special Mission configuration of its twin-turbine A-VIATOR aircraft featuring two camera hatches. Vulcanair P.68 Observer

Into the Twenty-First Century Today, the aerial survey industry must take into account the ever-increasing cost of maintaining these old aeroplanes, including the (lessening) availability of spare parts and those surprise ADs, SIDs and more. Responding to those considerations, there is a new generation of factory-modified survey airplanes which can facilitate survey clients’ requirements. Popular models include those from Vulcanair, Tecnam and Diamond at the lighter end of the scale with these types facilitating about 50% of the platform demand. Diamond’s DA42/62 is ideal for carrying smaller/lighter sensors and is now well established and highly valued by the special missions surveillance operators using FLIR type sensors and airborne telemetry. The single-engine types from Cessna (i.e. the Cessna 206 and Cessna 208 series) have proved extremely good aircraft for usage in developing countries. Gaining popularity is an excellent rival to the Cessna 208 – the Pacific Aerospace 750XL, a roomy, versatile platform with the ability to have up to three floor hatches and multitask survey, medevac, para dropping and more. Meanwhile, the Vuncanair P.68R and Tecnam P2006T SMP’s high-wing and retractable landing gear allows for a ‘no view obstruction’ for external cameras and operator FoV (Field of View). The high wing keeps two economical engines completely cleared from dust and any foreign object that could damage the propellers and the engine through the air intakes. The option to use automotive fuel (MOGAS) as well as AVGAS allows Tecnam P2006T (and Diamond types) to dramatically reduce direct costs, making it possible to fly in areas where AvGas is difficult to find or prohibitively expensive. The key success of this solution is mainly related to the high quality/price ratio and the many possibilities according to the needs of the final user/operator. At the top end of the scale (for civilian users) are the Beechcraft King Air series 90/250/350 for which specialist modification companies offering ‘off-the-shelf’ Pacific Aerospace P750 XSTOL

Finally, the newly-certified Tecnam P2012 offers 11 seats and comes in a Special Mission configuration: High wing, Lycoming piston engines and all-weather ability makes this aircraft an interesting option for operators worldwide.

Larger Cabin/Higher Payload Platforms There is still considerable demand for larger cabin class aircraft that are able to carry a wide range of sensor types. These vary from large format cameras on gyrostablised mounts, lidars, hyperspectral, multispectral, Thermal, SAR, FLIR, oblique looking cameras, spectrometers, geophysical and research instruments. For commercial operators a typical platform needs to have a range of more than 1,000nm while offering capability to fly both at low altitude at relatively low survey speeds, and at higher flight levels and higher speeds. Moreover, aircraft in this arena ideally need to be capable of carrying more than 300kg payload in sensors and associated support equipment, two crew, plus seating for an observer (as required by some governments). Turbine power will tend to ensure fuel availability worldwide for survey operators. Some countries, however, impose aeroplane age restrictions, stipulating that aircraft typically should be no older than 15-20 years, so the requirement for younger platforms is now a serious consideration. Although an expensive purchase for a commercial operator, the operating costs for a new(ish) airplane will soon prove cost-effective with greater reliability and easier servicing than for older aircraft. What’s the Cost of a Survey Modified Aircraft? An older piston twin that has been survey modified can be purchased for anything between €150k-300k. For older standard aeroplanes like the Piper PA31 series, it is possible to retrofit/modify with EASA/FAA certified hatches for less than €50k, but you still end up with an old aeroplane. Today, to purchase a modern/near-new survey airplane will cost from about €1.5m up to €4m, depending on type and modifications required. Although sensors are getting smaller and lighter, demand for a modern surveying platform is a serious consideration. Tecnam P2012

My First Trip Across the North Atlantic in a New Piper M600

Tecnam delivered three of its P2008JC MkII aircraft to the Polish Medical Air Rescue (PMAR) service, where the aircraft will be used for training purposes.

In December 2018, Bjarne Jorsal, co-founder, European Aircraft Sales, had the pleasure of ferrying a factory new Piper M600 across the North Atlantic, from the Piper factory in Vero Beach, Florida to Denmark. But how did the aircraft fare along the route?

The Tecnam P2008JC MkII is a twoseater, single-engine piston airplane characterized primarily by its high flight endurance. It offers a notably low fuel consumption rate (4.5 US gallons/hour) and state-of-the-art modern avionics. Tecnam built the P2008 to offer a number of advantages over competing aircraft in the market. For example, the P2008 incorporates metal wings and stabilator structures for strength, reliability and greater ability to flex in flight (ensuring a more comfortable ride), but a carbon fibre fuselage was selected to produce the desired increase in cabin width and aerodynamic efficiency. By using both materials in the construction, Tecnam says the aerodynamic qualities, flight characteristic and reliability of the P2008 is fully optimized. The P2008JC MkII saw further design enhancements, including a redesign of the dashboard and glareshield, enabling the introduction of Garmin’s G3X Touch display with a MD302 attitude instrument that is also available as a VFR Night option.

The Perfect Fit

The PMAR aircraft are based in Warsaw at the PMAR Air Training Center alongside two Robinson R44 Raven II helicopters that were also added to its fleet recently. The introduction of the Tecnam P2008JC MkII will enable PMAR to meet its growing training needs as it seeks to attract more pilots to its operation.

According to the manufacturer, the Piper M600 single-engine turboprop is designed for owners seeking extra range and speed without the inflated operating cost. At the heart of the aircraft is its wing design, offering some very slick aerodynamics. Indeed, it’s because of the wing design that for such a small aircraft the M600 offers some truly impressive range. Updated panel in the P2008JC Mk II

“Thanks to these machines, candidates will be able to acquire the required qualifications by performing training missions of a similar kind to the operations carried out by PMAR,” a company spokesperson outlined. The total cost was approximately €580k for the three P2008JCs, a purchase jointly funded by the Polish Government and the Polish Medical Air Rescue. Tecnam’s CEO Paolo Pascale commented, “We were delighted to be invited to participate in Polish Medical Air Rescue’s rigorous selection and evaluation process and we are delighted that we were selected above a number of other competitors. “PMAR not only valued the overall benefits the P2008JC MkII affords them as a training aircraft, but particularly appreciated the ongoing services and support that Tecnam have firmly established a great reputation for.” More information from www.tecnam.com

That range would prove useful for the North Atlantic crossing that lay ahead. But there’s much more to the aircraft that made flying it long-haul through some harsh winter weather conditions relatively easy. Equipped with the new Garmin 3000 avionics suite the ferry flight was a remarkably easy task. We started the first leg of our transatlantic flight on a Saturday morning, leaving Vero Beach in beautiful 20°C weather and flew northwards at FL280, heading for Bangor, Maine. Initially passing above some very poor weather over the Carolinas and in the DC area, we eventually found blue skies over New York, though temperatures were significantly lower than in Vero Beach, plummeting to –9°C by the time we approached Bangor. As beautiful as Bangor was, however, we decided to push on to Goose Bay, Canada, which remained open despite some snow. Enabling us to monitor the situation there (and indeed all the way up the Eastern seaboard) the Piper M600 incorporated GDL 69A SXM Satellite Weather and L3 WX-500 StormScope. On arrival at Goose Bay there were no hangars available, and with temperatures down to -16°C we checked the weather forecast and chose to head straight to Keflavik, Iceland, where the temperature was a comparatively mild +2°C. The en route weather showed headwinds of a maximum 25kts, so we set about refilling the tanks of the Piper M600, put on our survival suits, and took-off into the night sky.

Cruising at FL270 more-or-less directly to Keflavik, the M600 behaved beautifully. This lovely flight across the North Atlantic invoked memories of the last time I’d ferried an aircraft the

previous month when I'd picked up a factory new Pilatus PC-12 in Colorado. On that occasion we’d decided to make a detour and visit Sondrestrom Air Base in Greenland, taking a walk on the icecap, but this time there was no need for a stop. We continued straight across to Keflavik. After 5 hours and 15 minutes flying we landed with 1 hour 15 minutes of fuel remaining, which, for a single-engine turboprop in the Piper M600’s class is impressive. By now it was Sunday morning, and with only 3.5 hours flying time ahead of us we decided to refuel and move on. Landing in Aalborg, the aircraft was ‘baptized’ by two of the airport firetrucks to mark the occasion of the arrival of the first Piper M600 in Denmark!

Functionality Designed for Challenging Conditions

In total, we’d been airborne for 16 hours, and (including stops) reached Aalborg 20 hours after leaving Vero Beach. Making the Piper M600 particularly adept for a December North Atlantic crossing was the fact it has heated fuel. This function ensured the fuel temperature never went below -29°C even though at one point the outside temperature was -60°C for several hours. Helping us to manage the fuel situation the whole time, the G3000 avionics suite told us exactly how much fuel was in the tanks, what the remaining range was, and the condition of the weather around us. Moreover, the Safe Taxi function built in to the Garmin display helped greatly. For example, on our arrival in Goose Bay we could barely see the runway lights in the harsh weather conditions, but with the combination of synthetic vision and Safe Taxi we found the taxiway to the FBO with relative ease. Without it, we would have had some difficulties. To summarize, this North Atlantic crossing was a pleasure to undertake. Simply put, the Piper M600 flies extremely well and is a very stable aircraft – to the point that you really don’t want to stop flying. More information from https://europeanaircraftsales.com

On January 1, European Aircraft Sales was appointed as the new exclusive dealer of Piper Aircraft in the Netherlands. Based at Hans Christian Andersen Airport in Odense, Denmark, this dealership represents a significant new European territory to European Aircraft Sales’ existing territories in Scandinavia and the Baltic States. The M600 was airborne for a total 16 hours and 15 minutes from take-off in Vero Beach to landing in Odense, and made just three stops along the way.

Cirrus launched the second generation of its Vision Jet on 8th January. The G2, deliveries of which were to start by the end of January, has enhanced performance, comfort and safety, said the U.S. manufacturer, with an increase in cruising altitude, speed and range along with an upgraded flight deck. New to the type is an autothrottle and “Flight Stream” connectivity. Enhancing the passenger experience, new executive seats, thoughtfully-engineered noise reduction and a passenger productivity console highlight numerous G2 cabin upgrades. The expanded flight envelope takes Cirrus’s “Personal Jet” to Flight Level 310 (31,000 ft at standard atmospheric pressure), and access to Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) flight levels which takes the Vision Jet’s achievable range to over 1,200nm. In addition the G2 can carry an additional 150 lb on an 800nm mission, and top cruise speed is now “even further above 300kts,” said the Diluth, Minnesota-based company. The G2 introduces the ‘Perspective Touch+’ by Garmin – with new hardware, faster processing speeds and greater screen resolution. The flight deck will now have 3D Synthetic Vision, SurfaceWatch, integrated crew alerting, datalink weather, active weather radar, ADS-B, satellite communications, system synoptics and more, said Cirrus. Finally, upgraded Intelligent Batteries from True Blue Power round out enhancements delivering improved cold start capabilities. Dale Klapmeier, who co-founded Cirrus with his brother Alan in the 1980s, announced in December that he intended to step down as CEO of the company in the first half of 2019. He will remain involved in a senior advisory role to focus on long-term strategic developments.

The equipment was provided and installed by Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions and funding was joint between Saab and Cranfield University. Before going live, air traffic control officers (ATCOs) shadowed the operations of the existing traditional visual tower for six weeks while Saab technicians fine-tuned the system. The “opening” of the control center was made possible under a temporary approval to gain live experience with limited traffic. Now work has started with the UK CAA to clear the system for unrestricted use, something Cranfield hopes to complete in around six months. Its aging visual tower will then be closed. The system has two elements, a sensor “tower” and the control center. The sensor tower has 14 cameras arranged to provide 360-degree surveillance of the entire airfield and surrounding airspace. It also has cameras that can be panned, zoomed (up to 30 times) and elevated to the vertical to provide controllers with the ability to examine targets of interest in detail. The 360-degree imagery from the cameras is displayed in real time on a 225-degree arc of screens around the operator consoles. Cranfield’s ATCOs, who are employed directly by the university, have found the transition easier than expected, said the airport, and have adapted quickly to the new working environment, which has been designed with input from controllers at every stage. Saab started digital tower operations in Sweden in 2015 as part of a joint venture with air navigation services provider LFV. The first installation was a control center at Sundsvall airport that also controls operations at Örnsköldsvik remotely. Saab is now installing digital systems at Linköping and at the new-build Scandinavian Mountains Airport at Sälen-Trysil. The company is also providing digital systems to the Irish CAA, and at London City Airport. Research, especially into the integration of manned and unmanned systems, is the primary reason that Cranfield has adopted the digital tower as part of its Cranfield Global Research Airport vision. The University owns the airfield and has two research/flying classroom aircraft (Jetstream 31s, one of which is shortly to be replaced by a Saab 340). The new digital tower is an integral part of the future activities of the University’s DARTeC (Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre), a venture part-funded by industry that will open in 2020. DARTeC is tasked with exploring areas such as drone and unmanned vehicle integration, secure data communications, increased aircraft reliability and availability through self-sensing and self-aware technologies, and to the harnessing of digital technologies to enhance airport efficiencies. www.saabgroup.com

Britten-Norman Sets Up Maltese Base Isle-of-Wight-based aircraft manufacturer Britten-Norman has signed a lease on premises at Malta International Airport, where it intends to conduct training activities and establish an International Air Operator’s Certificate. Company CEO William Hynett said, “Malta benefits from favourable weather conditions and relative airspace freedom, making [it] an ideal location to help broaden Britten-Norman’s training output. He added Malta “also offers a sensible solution to the Group’s requirement for a Brexit contingency plan in the event that the UK and the EU fail to negotiate an effective bilateral relationship.” Charles Pace, director of Transport Malta, welcomed the company’s decision. “We look forward to future opportunities of expansion and the employment opportunities it will provide in Malta.” www.britten-norman.com

robust growth. “Activity has clearly slowed in H2-2018 in UK, France, Italy,” said WingX founder Richard Koe. “The biggest declines [in 2018] came from Russia and Turkey,” he added. Flight activity within Europe was flat in December, with a big gain in arrivals from North America and a drop-off in flights from Africa, the CIS region and the Middle East. Business jet flights from China into Europe were up by 11% in 2018, however. AOC/Charter activity comprised almost 60% of all flights in December, but activity growth was flat YOY, and there were “solid” declines in business jet flights, notably for Cessna, Hawker and Dassault types. The business jet types with most AOC growth in December were with the Embraer Legacy and Citation Latitude. WingX says Super Midsize jet activity is “surging along” – up 16% in 2018, boosted by Citation Latitude activity. Embraer was the OEM with most activity growth in 2018, sectors increasing by 10% vs 2017. Top airports saw a major decline in December, centred on Paris, Geneva, Nice and Luton. Biggin Hill was an exception, with almost 20% growth, mainly in charter/ AOC activity. Le Bourget, Biggin Hill and Farnborough saw the most growth during 2018. “Overall flight activity trends in December were flattered by a big increase in business piston traffic. Clearly business jet demand slumped in France and especially Paris due to the widespread protests,” said Koe. “Elsewhere, we’re seeing slackening activity in Italy, UK, and Switzerland. The outlook for 2019 will depend on the genuine demand for replacement and upgrade of older aircraft as new business jets now come off the production line in larger numbers.” www.wingx-advance.com

WingX Sees Mixed Results for Euro Bizav According to WingX’s January Business Aviation Monitor, 53,546 business aviation departures in Europe in December, a slight increase in YOY activity, boosted by “exceptional growth in business piston traffic.” Business jet sectors were down by 3% overall, and charter down by 4% YOY. Prop activity boosted growth in France and Germany.

HondaJet Elite Gets Japanese Approval The new HondaJet Elite, an upgraded version of the HA-420, received approval from Japan’s JCAB certification authority in December and deliveries in the country were due to start shortly afterwards. The Elite was unveiled last May at the EBACE business aviation show in Geneva, and deliveries began in August following FAA and EASA certification. This approach eliminated the impaired downward visibility due to landing gear – The MX-15 in its extended position on the lift enables unobstructed 360° view, said ABT. Robinson, the Torrance, California-based helicopter manufacturer, has a range of recent news including adding Avidyne’s IFD 400 series touchscreen GPS navigators as options for its R22, R44 and R66 models. Wi-Fi, for interfacing with an iPad, and synthetic vision are standard – when used in conjunction with Avidyne’s IFD100 app, an iPad can mirror the IFD display or serve as an independent display capable of controlling the IFD. The IFD100 app is free and available on the Apple App Store.

Meanwhile the Polish Air Force University in November added two R44 Raven IIs to its fleet, via local dealer PHU Polinar. It is the first acquisition of U.S. helicopters to be used for military training in Poland, the decision being influenced by more than 70 Robinson helicopters successfully operating in Poland. Both R44s were equipped with a fully integrated glass cockpit featuring Garmin’s GDU 1060 TXi, GTN 750 navigator, GTX 345 transponder with ADS-B In/ Out and Spidertracks for real time tracking. In other news, Transport Canada in December approved the R66 Cargo Hook, which can carry external loads of up to 1,200lb. It increases the helicopter’s max. gross weight from 2,700lb to 2,900lb. Optional extra-large bubble windows enable the pilot to view the load for precision placement. “One thing I’ve learned from all my years in the industry is that high operating costs are the main reason commercial operators fail,” said Eric Gould, owner Aerial Recon, a longtime Robinson dealer in Calgary, Canada. “The R66’s bottom line gives users the edge over aging fleets currently in the field. And, now with the cargo hook, R66 operators can handle loads of 1200 lb. all day long and not with just 15 minutes of fuel.” Robinson is now accepting orders for cargo hook installations on new R66 aircraft, at a cost of $28,000. www.robinsonheli.com

Garmin G500H TXi Displays Approved Garmin has announced the “certification and availability” of the G500H TXi touchscreen flight display for normal category VFR helicopters. The unit offers an array of panel possibilities and a streamlined upgrade path for helicopters already equipped with the original G500H flight display. Also, a new software version for the GTN 650/750 series has been approved for helicopters. “Together, the G500H TXi and GTN offer seamless touchscreen continuity in the cockpit, bringing a new level of reliability, adaptability and affordability to helicopter operations,” said Garmin. The the G500H TXi is available in several sizes and formats, including a large 10.6inch touch-controlled display and two versions of 7-inch touch-controlled displays in either portrait or landscape orientations. The 10.6-inch G500H TXi is available in a horizontal format that can accommodate PFD information and MFD simultaneously. The 7-inch portrait display can be individually dedicated to a PFD or MFD. For space-limited panels, the 7-inch landscape display can serve as a dedicated PFD with instrument tapes and an arc-view horizontal situation indicator (HSI). The G500H TXi also features multiple video input options, night vision goggle (NVG) compatibility and a graphical map overlay within the HSI for most display formats. The G500H TXi is equipped with a five-colour Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS), WireAware wire-strike avoidance technology, as well as optional Garmin HSVT 3D synthetic vision. An expanded obstacle database is available offering more than 700,000 miles of power line data. Connext cockpit connectivity with Flight Stream 510 and added Database Concierge is also available as an option. Robinson R44 Sets Electric Flight Record An all-electric manned helicopter has set a Guinness World Record for distance flown, with a Robinson R44 developed by Tier 1 Engineering of California flying 30nm at an average speed of 80kts, at a height of up to 800ft. The record was set by test pilot Capt Rick Webb at Los Alamitos Army Airfield in Orange County, California on 7 December 2018, using a special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category. The electric R44 project is funded by organ transplant specialists Lung Biotechnology, which hopes to produce a semi-autonomous craft for organ delivery. The Tier 1 team removed the original Lycoming IO-540 engine and installed a custom mount for the electric motors and a reduction gearbox to interface with the existing drivetrain. Flying car designer AeroMobil says it has applied for a European type certificate for its Aeromobil 4.0 craft, as a noncomplex aeroplane with a maximum takeoff mass of under 1,200kg. The CS-23 rules have an amendment allowing use of airbags and other automotive systems. The Slovakian company is simultaneously seeking compliance with European car rules through the Vehicle Certification Authority. Doug MacAndrew, CTO of AeroMobil, said, “We are looking forward to working with EASA on the type certification process and showing how we’ve been able to incorporate the best aspects of automotive and aerospace technology into one design to

Rolls-Royce To Build World’s Fastest E-Plane UK-based aeroengine manufacturer Rolls-Royce says it plans to build the world’s fastest electric plane, which can fly at more than 300mph. Named ACCEL (Accelerating the Electrification of Flight), the aircraft is scheduled to be ready for flight in 2020. The project is part-funded by the UK government and also involves YASA, an electric motor manufacturer, and start-up Electroflight. Matheu Parr, ACCEL project manager for Rolls-Royce, said: “This plane will be powered by a state-of-the-art electrical system and the most powerful battery ever built for flight. In the year ahead, we’re going to demonstrate its abilities in demanding test environments before going for gold in 2020 from a landing strip on the Welsh coastline.” Rolls-Royce says ACCEL will be able to fly 200 miles (London to Paris) on a single charge. The propeller will be driven by three high-power density electric motors, together delivering more than 500 horsepower. Bell Unveils “Nexus” Air Taxi at CES At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, on 7th January Bell Helicopter revealed the Bell Nexus as full-scale VTOL mock-up, based on its hybrid-electric flying vehicle using a novel powered lift concept developed by the U.S. company, which is part of Textron. Team Nexus, consisting of Bell, Safran, EPS, Thales, Moog and Garmin, are collaborating on Bell’s VTOL aircraft and on-demand mobility solutions. Bell is leading the design, development and production of the VTOL systems; Safran is providing the hybrid propulsion and drive systems; EPS is providing the energy storage systems; Thales is providing the Flight Control Computer (FCC) hardware and software; Moog is designing the flight control actuation systems; and Garmin is integrating the avionics and the vehicle management computer (VMC). Alongside the debut of Bell Nexus, Bell was showing the Autonomous Pod Transport (APT) – the pod varies in payload capability to serve various missions. www.bellflight.com

Merlin Starts Portable Runway Light Trial

A new patented system of portable and stackable runway lights has been tested for the first time at an airfield, Eshott in the UK. Produced by Merlin Aerospace Systems the lights drew considerable interest at last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s AeroExpo event at Wycombe Air Park, near London. Richard Pike from Eshott Airfield said there had been huge interest from pilots and outside companies including JetFly, which operates PC-12s and is set to start using Eshott. The set of 10 lights was on trial from Merlin and had also been welcomed by the Army, which sometimes uses Eshott for refueling its helicopters, according to Merlin founder and inventor of the stackable, portable lighting system, Gerard Moroney.

Aero-Dienst Technician Wins Top Award Nuremberg based Aero-Dienst says that one of its apprentices has been recognised as Germanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best aircraft electronics technicians by the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). Frank Hofmann was selected from the best 165 final-year apprentices from all over the country; he achieved the best final examination results. Aero-Dienst says it is the first time an apprentice focused on business aviation has won the award. The company has around 30 aircraft electronics technicians, of whom six are apprentices. Germany’s MT-Propeller has received an extended type certificate for its MTV-34 propeller, meaning that it is now certificated for use on engines up to 141 shp with a system weight of approximately 10 kg (22 lbs) and a maximum propeller speed of 2560 rpm.

Leonardo Redstreak System Wins Award

The small and light three-blade propeller, with a diameter of up to 70,08 inch (178 cm), was originally designed for ultralight and light sport aircraft that use Rotax 912/914 series engines. With the upgraded TC, it is now also applicable for UL and LSA with the Rotax 915iS, said MT-Propeller, which noted that it is the lightest certified constant-speed propeller and ground adjustable propeller certified for 141 hp. It has been vibration tested and approved on the Rotax engine family. The MTV-34 natural composite propeller weighs only 9kg (19.8lbs), the UL MTGovernor for UL is about 1kg (2.2 lbs) and the optional MT-Propeller Kevlar spinner assembly has a weight of about 1kg (2.2 lbs). “It has the same technology as MT-Propellers for regional airliners and aerobatic aircraft,” said the company. MT-Propeller offers 30 certified propeller models from two-blade to seven-blade hydraulically controlled variable pitch propellers, for engines producing up to 5000hp, and 2-blade to 4-blade electrically controlled variable pitch propellers, for engines producing up to 350hp – as well as two-blade, fixed-pitch propellers. The company holds around 210 STCs worldwide and is OEM supplier for more than 90 percent of the European aircraft industry as well as 30 percent of the US aircraft industry. More than 20,000 propeller systems with more than 70,000 blades are in service. A team from Smith Myers, which is based in of Biggleswade, England, and Leonardo Helicopter’s Yeovil, UK plant, have won a Royal Aeronautical Society Silver Medal for developing the Redstreak Mobile Phone Detection and Location System, which enables a search-and-rescue helicopter to locate and communicate with a person in distress possessing a mobile phone. The system works in areas with no cellular network coverage, effectively configuring the mobile phone as a rescue beacon. Redstreak demonstrated detection ranges of 32km with accuracies of better than 100m. While locating the individual, Redstreak provides both voice and text communications. Redstreak can locate individuals not detectable by other sensors and large search areas can covered rapidly. The search is quicker, safer and more effective. The Redstreak system is used on the AW101 Norwegian All Weather Search and Rescue Helicopter. The systems avionics certification covers both rotary and fixedwing aircraft.
