30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE THE JOURNEY SO FAR

pertex.com

The start of our journey The concept of the fabric that later became Pertex® was an idea of Hamish Hamilton, who some 30 years ago discovered that moisture would move along the microscopic capillaries within a woven fabric, spreading over a larger surface where it quickly dried. Hamish brought his idea to Perseverance Mills Ltd, a Lancashire textile manufacturer specializing in very lightweight, tightly woven synthetic fabrics used in dot matrix printers for the rapidly growing data processing industry. The Pertex® brand was born and with it garments such as the Buffalo Double-P system that was the forerunner to what we now know as ‘soft-shell’. Hamish claimed that the (Double-P) Pertex / pile system would protect against 1/2” / hr rain fall and up to 50 mph winds. This transfer of technology from one industry to another was unusual in the textile industry where there was (is) a ‘habit’ of resisting change and as a consequence failing in the face of stiff competition from, in the case of the UK, Asia. It was in the mid 1980’s that Rab Carrington began to use Pertex for the shell of his down clothing and sleeping bags, replacing the much heavier fabrics which were used at the time. We soon discovered that the Pertex was not only lighter, it dried more quickly, was softer, allowing the down to loft to it’s maximum and was comfortable against the skin. It was these attributes that led Pertex to become the recognised leader in high performance fabric technology. The technicians at Perseverance Mills’ began to understand how the components of the fabric worked together to create these levels of performance. Yarns with a filament size > 1.2 dtex/ filament (each yarn comprising of 34 individual filaments) where 10 km of each yarn weighs only 44g! woven into a precise structure. Our 30 year heritage staying true to our British roots has led us on a path of continuous innovation to deliver the best end-use focussed fabrics. The Pertex label is our promise of all these things. Today we have a group of sub-brands that make up the Pertex family.

What is it? Pertex Quantum GL offers the ultimate balance of lightness and strength. Similar to spider-silk, Pertex Quantum GL balances extreme gossamer lightness with high tensile strength. Using this symmetry of the elements, apparel and equipment weight is dramatically reduced without the need for compromise. Quantum GL is the most advanced fabric we’ve ever made and is a natural evolution of our award winning Pertex Quantum fabric. Precisely woven using incredibly fine 10 denier yarns these products are nanolight at less than 25 g/m2 (0.75 oz/yd2).

What is it? Pertex Quantum is a true featherweight at around d 30g/m2 (0.9o/yd2). We use some of the finest yarns available to us with the maximum thread count. Tear strength and seam strength are good for its weight. Pertex Quantum can be used in shell jackets and withstands the abuse of hardcore use. Quantum is light and strong offering a significant weight reduction without sacrificing much strength and abrasion resistance. The fabric’s softness allows insulation in your sleeping bag or jacket to have more loft.

Pertex Microlight is a luxuriously soft and light shell fabric for insulated apparel, sleeping bags and wind-shells. Woven using micro-fine 30 denier yarns these products are-light at less than 50 g/m2 (1.5 oz/yd2). Microlight is well balanced and offers weight reduction whilst maintaining good strength and abrasion resistance. It is windproof but allows a controlled amount of air to pass through the fabric to provide comfort during high activity. The fabric’s dense weave reduces heat loss.

What is it? Pertex Classic is the reference, the standard by which others are measured. The range has been successfully proven in the marketplace for over 15 years. Made from nylon yarns these lighter 44 decitex/40 denier fabrics have set the global standard for quality sleeping bags. Using the concept of capillary action technology, Pertex Classic moves moisture away from the body whilst offering excellent weather protection. Pertex Classic is dry and comfortable and it’s lightweight softness provides maximum loft for insulated items.

What is it? Pertex Endurance technology incorporates an ultra-thin membrane with a durable nylon face fabric. This layer is so thin that it hardly adds any weight, nor does it affect the softness of the material. Designed as a shell for insulated apparel and sleeping that may be exposed to spindrift and condensation ie in snow caves or tents Pertex Endurance technology incorporates an ultra-thin air permeable coating that is both highly breathable, water and wind resistant. This layer protects the insulation material from the elements to maintain loft and retain warmth. Pertex Endurance is 100% windproof. This property increases thermal efficiency; warm air can’t escape and so it remains trapped inside. Pertex Endurance can increase thermal efficiency by up 10ºF/5ºC.

Main properties + Density and denier gradient structure moves moisture away from the skin + Weatherproof + Tough and durable + Very low comparable weight and packing volume Used In + High performance outerwear

Technical specification Composition - 100% Nylon 6 Yarns - 40 denier, 48 filaments, flat, Full-Dull, Nylon 6 Weave -Duplex Warp threads / inch = 197 Weft threads / inch = 133 Air permeabiity = 6.0cc (max)

What is it? Pertex Equilibrium is the result of extensive development work in the laboratory and field. Pertex Equilibrium applies capillary action technology conventionally applied to base layer products. This means that during high aerobic activity, moisture is transported away from the skin to the outside of the fabric where it evaporates, hence creating body temperature ‘Equilibrium’. Pertex Equilibrium 3-dimensionally wicks the moisture away from the body. The engine behind this process is your own body heat. On the outside the smaller filaments have a relatively high surface area, which causes the excessive moisture to evaporate quickly. Equilibrium is lightweight and soft - allowing full freedom of movement and yet is strong and robust, making it suitable for rigorous use. It has a comparable low weight and packing volume.

Fabric care Water repellency All our fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon based chemical. This dramatically reduces the surface tension on the fabric so water simply runs off (imagine a freshly waxed car). The fabric is not however resistant to prolonged heavy rain. Restoring water repellency The effectiveness will deteriorate during normal wearing, the rate really depends on how often the garment is worn andwashed. The repellency can be restored by tumble drying or ironing on a synthetic setting. In the case of total loss the garment can be restored using a proprietary treatment from Gangers or Nikwax etc. Downproof This term is often misunderstood, as no lightweight woven fabric that relies only on very high thread count and calendaring can be truly downproof. Some small quill or down fibres may percolate the fabric. Should this happen, do not pull the down out through the fabric as this will result in an endless fountain of downs following, also the gap between the threads will become enlarged. It is better to pinch the down on the inside of the fabric and work it back into the chamber. How do I wash it? + Machine or hand wash at 40ºC (104ºF) + 30ºC (86ºF) for stretch fabric + Use a synthetic setting and mild soap + Avoid fabric softeners + Rinse well in cold water + Cool tumble dry or iron on a synthetic setting
