Histories of Art: Manet’s “Bar at the Folies-Bergere”

Wednesday, December 12 • 2 - 3 pm • Ocean City Branch This art discussion looks at Manet’s painting from 1882 and places it within a cultural context while also observing the manner in which the painting conveys ideas of consumerism to the viewer. I refer to this as the consumer gaze because of the products seen in the foreground, the customers in the background, and the barmaid herself. Manet chose to sign one of the wine bottles, establishing the idea of product placement and the notion of consumption during the 1800s. This exploration seeks to fuse the ideas of a multiplicity of gazes and the enigmatic quality of the barmaid with that of a new leisure class watching labor and thus turning a cultural experience into leisure of consumerism. Presented by Elena Coelho.
