Ballycastle Knits

Fridays, September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 • 10 am - 12 pm • Ocean Pines Branch Victoria Christie-Healy, the club organizer, has been knitting since childhood. Victoria and her husband and business partner Mike Healy relocated to Ocean Pines in March of 2015. Her career as a knitting teacher started at the Reston Community Center in 2009 and grew over the next four years to several other community centers in Northern Virginia. She has taught several hundred women (and some men) how to knit. She conducts several knitting retreats a year in Ireland.

Celebrating 275 Years Travel to Washington DC to see the historic home of a local hero Stephen Decatur; then visit Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. The cost of the trip is $60.00. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. Author Talk by Deborah Chapman Newell “Memories in a Daughter’s Heart”

Friday, September 15 • 2 pm • Snow Hill Branch Deborah Chapman Newell grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and although her career has taken her to other places, her roots have remained on the shore. Her mother taught kindergarten full-time for many years, achieved a Bachelor’s Degree at the age of 56, and remained active and energetic years after her retirement. “Memories in a Daughter’s Heart” is Deborah’s first book, and it is the story of Deborah and her mother. As her mother aged, Deborah found herself learning to cope with her mother’s struggles and also encouraging and inspiring other women in similar circumstances.

Sea Glass Pendant Making

Friday, September 22 • 1:30 pm • Snow Hill Branch Have you ever been wandering down the beach and catch the sun glistening from a mysterious glass gem? Sea glass comes from discarded bottles from ships and industry, and also unfortunately from people that leave rubbish on the beach, too. Over time the sea washes it back and forth as the tide ebbs and flows until after many years it is thrown back onto our beaches transformed into the little sea gems we have come to treasure. At this workshop, you will learn how to make a one-of-a-kind sea glass pendant, with local sea glass hand collected by the presenter, Ashley Jones. Program is limited to 15 participants. Australia: A Serendipitous Trip “Down Under” Presentation by Harry Deitch

Monday, September 25 • 3 pm • Snow Hill Branch Harry Deitch presents highlights from a five week trip to Australia. His mother was an “Aussie War Bride” who left Perth, West Australia in 1946 and traveled to Chincoteague Island, VA. At age 68, Harry traveled alone on a five week adventure to meet his relatives in Australia for the first time. He will describe his adventures in Tasmania, Sydney, Perth, and a tiny outback wheat-belt town called Mukinbudin, and a train ride across the continent on the Indian-Pacific Railroad. One Maryland One Book Program Music of the West African Kora

Wednesday, November 1 • 1 pm Ocean Pines Branch Presenter Sean Gaskell play music on the West African Kora and talks about its origins. The West African Kora is a 21 string harp that is native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years, although some of the music comes from the middle 13th century around the founding of the Mandinka empire. Sean studied with master Kora players Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh from the Gambia over the course of multiple visits.

Gothic Art and Architecture

Wednesday, November 1 • 2 pm • Berlin Branch Join us for a look at the innovations of Gothic architecture (c.1137-1500) and tour two of France’s famous cathedrals, Saint-Denis and Chartres. Rib vaults, the exterior (flying) buttress, pointed arches, and highly decorative exteriors represent the major points of this era in cathedral design. As a cultural and ntellectual epicenter, our look at medieval Paris will also contemplate a couple of sculptures and images from folios. The so-called ‘dark ages’ were actually filled with light. Her career as a knitting teacher started at the Reston Community Center in 2009 and grew over the next four years to several other community centers in Northern Virginia. E. ENCOURAG INSPIRE. CREATE.

StudiOC is Ocean City Library's new digital media lab. It's a space designed to inspire creativity, encourage collaboration, and help build 21st Century Skills for our patrons and community members. Adjacent to the young adult / teen collection, StudiOC contains equipment and materials for people of all ages to explore stop-motion animation, podcasting, video recording with a green screen and editing software, in addition to our new educational programs on our iPads and gaming computer. StudiOC also has an Oculus Rift for patrons13 and older, with educational programming. StudiOC is available by appointment or for walk-in use. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Maryland State Library.
