Foreword

“We are proud of our 2011 cohort. They have worked hard over an intensive study period and deserve the success which must surely follow.”

Welcome to our yearbook showcasing the talents of the 2011 MBA cohort. This year we include a selection of students from out part-time as well as full-time courses. I am sure you will find a wealth of experience within these pages. Our students study hard to achieve a well earned MBA award and we are proud of them all. Although some of these students have already secured exciting postcourse positions with national and international organisations many are seeking opportunities from January 2012. A Norwich Business School MBA graduate is likely to have a deep understanding of the practical application of a range of business models, theories and frameworks. Our interactive teaching methods, commitment to group work and integration of knowledge and skills through real consultancy activities encourages students to reflect upon the application of knowledge in a variety of contexts. In 2011 consultancy projects have been undertaken with private and public organisations such as Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Marsh Risk Consulting, and Shaping Norfolk’s Future. Many of our part time students have undertaken an intensive consultancy project with international companies in Prague. We were the first university to offer a joint MBA and Diploma in Management Consultancy (awarded by the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute of Consulting). This means that our students have deep exposure to a set of skills that can be used in both internal or external consultancy and, indeed, general business management practice. Our students have studied either a general management MBA or have undertaken a defined series of electives which together with general MBA modules cover the domain knowledge of Strategic Carbon Management. As part of the School’s commitment to responsible business our students (full-time and part-time) have generated over £10,000 for charity in 2011. As in previous years we have maintained a diverse cohort both in terms of ages and nationality (over 20 nationalities represented in the 2011 cohort). This has given the cohort a broad global perspective with no one nationality dominating the class discussions around international business practice. In your search for talent please check out the students in this yearbook. I am confident that you will find industrious and intelligent MBA graduates within its pages. You can either contact the students direct or contact me for advice and pre-screening. I am always happy to support our graduates who have worked with during their challenging studies.

If you would like to attend this event, please contact the MBA team.

Opportunities for working with us Norwich Business School offers organisations and companies different opportunities for working with our MBA students. These are through consultancy projects and masterclasses. Consultancy projects

Masterclasses

By working with us on a consultancy project, you have the opportunity to host a small group of motivated students who will tackle a business issue that is important to you and your organisation.

Throughout the MBA programme, students attend a series of masterclasses organised by the Business School and its business partners. These masterclasses are taught by national and international experts.

MBA students undertake two consultancy projects during the year.

If you are interested in finding out more about our Consultancy Projects or our Masterclass series, contact: Terry Kendrick MBA Programme Director t.kendrick@uea.ac.uk +44 (0)1603 591540

“Both my consultancy projects went well - the second one was particularly successful. Our client reported that they were very happy with our research and report and now I feel very confident about delivering the consultancy process...Because of this I feel I have more options about what I might be doing in future... For me, the consultancy projects were one of the best parts of the whole course" Anahita Pajuhesh, MBA Strategic Carbon Management, 2011

A personal viewpoint: Mai Vu “There is quite a focus on teamwork in this MBA and I think it adds a lot to the course. When I look back, I made a very good decision to come to the Norwich Business School and to study the full-time MBA here - I’ve enjoyed the course and I’m satisfied I made the right choice.” Before Mai came to Norwich she was working as a department manager for Vietnam Communications Corporation, running a national children’s website in her home country of Vietnam. But in January 2011, she decided to uproot and move to Norwich to study the one year full-time MBA at the business school at UEA, and we asked her why she decided to do that, what brought her to Norwich in particular and what she hoped to do next? “Yes it is true that I had a good job at home in Vietnam, and I enjoyed working on the http://socnhi.com website which was a successful project for me. At the same time I wanted to extend my background in IT and get some more business skills on my CV. I looked around at business courses and MBAs in particular and decided that the UEA MBA was a good option for me. “Two things caught my attention about the course – a lot of the MBAs I had seen had September starts but Norwich Business School’s MBA started in January which actually suited me much better with finishing my job in Vietnam. At the same time, I could see how the consultancy projects would give me practical experience of business management – exactly the skills I was looking to build on. “When I finish the course, I hope I will have increased my skills enough to get some work in Europe somewhere. I know I wouldn’t even be thinking of this without studying an MBA first – the course has given me a lot of experience and more confidence about my business skills.

8

“Lots of the things I hoped for before I came to Norwich have really happened to me. I liked working on the consultancy projects and a few of the other modules such as Entrepreneurship were very enjoyable for me too. The teaching style here is very different to what I am used to in Asia. Most of the lecturers here have a very active style and everyone is invited to speak up and participate to the group in some way. ‘We’ve been working in teams of four for the consultancy projects and although I have learned a lot from Terry’s lectures [Terry Kendrick, the Course Director and lecturer for the Management Consultancy Skills Module], I have also got a lot from the other people in my teams. In one of my consultancy projects, I was lucky enough to be with people who have lots of work experience. In such a small team you have close working relationships, you get to know each other very well and you can learn a lot from your friends.’ ‘There’s also a lot of variety within the groups. I really enjoyed the teamwork in another assignment when we were working in larger teams. When we looked at ourselves, we saw that the 11 of us came from 10 different countries! That kind of cultural diversity makes group work great fun and of course there’s a lot to be learned about everyone’s background and their lives before coming to Norwich.’ ‘There is quite a focus on teamwork in this MBA and I think it adds a lot to the course. In fact, when I look back, I think I made a very good decision to come to the Norwich Business School and to study the full-time MBA here. I’ve enjoyed the course and I’m satisfied I made the right choice for me.’

MBA consultancy projects at Norwich Business School: how we teach our students to apply knowledge MBA consultancy projects at Norwich Business School are live and challenging projects. They are not simply placements where a student works full-time in an organisation for a small period of time. Consultancy projects take place over a period of about twelve weeks usually with groups of students acting as consultancy teams to address real problems and issues in organisations. All of this activity is undertaken whilst, at the same time, attending the taught units typical of an MBA programme. By consulting over a longer time period than many other MBA programmes, the students have an opportunity to undertake an unusually thorough consultancy. Our approach allows them to initiate discussion with a wider range of people than in a short intensive consultancy where access to the relevant people may not be possible within the timeframe. Furthermore the students have time to reflect on their learning as the project progresses and, indeed, part of their assessment is a reflection on the project once it has been completed. In addition to showing their analytical and creative skills, the students practice negotiation and time management (they work to a proposal agreed with the client) and learn to work as a group (never easy!) toward a high level objective. The projects are chosen so that models and frameworks taught within the course can be applied.

All of this is underpinned with 30 hours of formal education and training in consultancy skills. This commitment to education and training is vitally important when addressing real issues that matter in real organisations. Our approach has been recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and our students were the first in the UK to have the opportunity to leave with a joint MBA and a Diploma in Management Consultancy awarded by the Institute of Consulting and the Chartered Management Institute.

Example recent consultancy projects: Marsh Risk Consulting www.uk.marsh.com

Shaping Norfolk’s Future www.shapingnorfolksfuture.org.uk

A team of MBA General students studied the extremes of rise and fall in stock market prices in 250 businesses over a recent five year period and correlated these with company risk events, both internal and external – “Shareholder value: impact of risk events and relevance of intangible assets”. The students developed and negotiated a proposal to study this activity and, with regular contact and presentations delivered, met all deadlines.

A team of students studied the issues around sustainable prosperity for Norfolk for the county’s economic development partnership. After a literature review students undertook detailed interviews and an online survey with key stakeholders, both individual businesses and wider economic development organisations. The study concluded with a series of recommendations for future strategy.

The client was “very excited” by its findings and the UK Managing Director commented “The feedback I have had from members of my team concerning the conduct and professionalism of the group running the research has been nothing but positive. Our clients regularly ask us to demonstrate the value that can be created by managing risk and this piece of work provides us with another perspective”. The Forum Trust www.theforumnorwich.co.uk/the-forum-trust Students undertook a strategic review of The Forum (an iconic building in Norwich) as a destination for people throughout the county. The study undertook a literature review of best practice, identified and studied performance review methods and make recommendations to the Trust. In addition to a literature review the students designed and ran a range of stakeholder surveys as an input to their analysis and recommendations.

Adnams www.adnams.co.uk An MBA Strategic Carbon Management consultancy team in conjunction with key internal stakeholders addressed the issue of providing a measuring and reporting framework for carbon emissions and management. One of the key constraints was that the system be user friendly and easy to maintain whilst inspiring staff to be involved. The consultancy activity included a review of legislation and regulation, a series of linked spreadsheets for measuring and reporting and a friendly rivalry game – Carbon Combat – to inspire staff to take carbon management seriously.

“Since I started the part-time MBA course, new opportunities have opened up for me at work and I have changed my outlook completely. I have much more confidence in my work now – I really feel I know what I am talking about and that I am good at what I do!” Sam Khazanchi, Executive MBA, 2011
