Ferdinand “Ferd� H. Raffel Jr., 84, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, at the JourneyCare Hospice Center, Woodstock, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 1, 1932, to Ferdinand and Martha (Miller) Raffel in Woodstock. On Dec. 13, 1953, he married Carol Stecker at First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Woodstock VFW Post 5040 and served for several years as a member of the honor guard. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, and enjoyed ushering for worship services. He was an avid woodworker, making special projects for all his grandkids and teaching them the woodworking skills to create their own masterpieces. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his loving family. Survivors include his wife; three children, Don (Cheryl) Raffel, Janette (Dan) Hess and Barb (Keith) Sova; eight grandchildren, Brittany (Marc) Hinderlider, Andrew Raffel, Renee Merz, David Hess, Brian Hess, Shannon (Greg) Topf, Rebecca Friedel and Randy (Roseanna) Sova; four great-grandchildren, John McMahon, Alysia Foat, Aubrey Hinderlider and Emma Hinderlider; a brother, Ted (Donna) Raffel; a brother-in-law, Ralph (Shirley) Stecker; two sisters-inlaw, Marian Lang and Anita Stecker; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucy Poelling; a brother, Richard Raffel; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Lang and Bill Stecker. Visitation was held Oct. 23 at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was Oct. 24 at Grace Lutheran Church. Burial was at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock. Centegra Hospital-Woodstock. He was born Dec. 2, 1930, to Emmett and Isabel (Holsker) DeWane. On May 3, 1958, he married the love of his life, JoAnn Maree Florent, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Chicago. His faith was very John W. important to him, DeWane Sr. and he was a dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. In 1949, he graduated from St. Mary High School and jokingly said, “I graduated in the top 10 of my class of 10 students!â€? He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1954 and was stationed at R.A.F. Sculthorpe, England, during the Korean War. He worked for more than 30 years for the Western Southern Life Insurance Company. Upon retiring, he worked 12 years as a crossing guard on Route 47 at Northwood Elementary School. He was a member of VFW Post 5040. He learned the value of hard work while growing up on a farm and the value of discipline and integrity while in the service. He was a man of principle, good humor and kindness and was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan of all Chicago teams. He always found the good in people and was a mentor and friend to anyone he met. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Survivors include a daughter, Julie M. (Barry) Behler, Woodstock; three sons, John W. (Carolyn) DeWane Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., Joseph M. (Julie) DeWane, Windham, N.H., and Jerome 4 +LL+LL +L>HUL :\TTLYĂ„LSK N.C.; eight grandchildren, Christopher Wayne, Jennifer JoAnn and Bridgette Maree Behler, Jonathan Christian and Joseph Patrick DeWane, Joseph Michael DeWane, Ryan Olivia and Hannah Maree DeWane; a sister, Mary Statter; and many nieces and nephews. He also held a special place in his heart for his “adopted daughterâ€? Jennifer Stoudt, Loveland, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in April 1982; three brothers and sister-in-laws, Emmett and Lois DeWane, Bernard and Arlene DeWane, Leo and Dorothy DeWane, and Donald and Ann DeWane; and a sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Russell Osmun.
