First Tree Of Hundreds Planted In Astoria Greening Western Queens $2 Million Project Digs In

Photo Top Right: Members of the US Army Transportation Group based out of Fr. Totten enjoying camaraderie at John Vincent Daniels VFW Post 2813 in Woodside after marching in the November 11th Veterans Day Parade in NYC. Many of the soldiers have just recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

At 11AM on 11/11/11, 75 people arrived at John Vincent Daniels Jr. Square to celebrate Veterans Day. A celebration to honor our military Veterans, as well as an opportunity to thank those currently in the military – those who put their lives on the line to protect

and serve our country daily. It’s a day of gratitude and recognition and the VFW Post 2813, Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Sunnyside/ Woodside Lions Club and Boy Scouts filled the park to honor those lost and those who protect. We salute you all. (Continued on Page 4)

The honey locust tree, located at 20-16 27th Street in Astoria (near the corner of 20th Avenue), is the first of the goal 850 trees to be planted throughout Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, and Woodside over the next three years. This is the first season of tree planting for the project. Tree planting locations have been determined based on community requests and commitments to long-term care. Tree planting will continue each planting season (spring and fall) through the duration of the project. Greening Western Queens is a project of City Parks Foundation through the Partnerships for Parks program, in partnership with NYC Parks and New York Restoration Project and is supported by the Greening Western Queens Fund of North Star Fund. The goal of the project is to foster a community of tree stewards in Western Queens, an area that lacks significant green space.

H.S. Enrollment Fair On Wednesday, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan held a high school enrollment fair at the Long Island City YMCA. At the fair, sixteen Queens high schools set up tables to answer detailed questions from parents, and future high school students. Teachers, counselors, and administrators also provided pamphlets and prizes while encouraging attendees to look at each school, which all have specialized curriculums, and plenty of extra-curricular activities. “Choosing a high school can feel overwhelming to parents and students alike, so we held this fair to help make the process less stressful by having many schools in one place,” said Van Bramer.

“”By bringing schools from across Queens together with parents and students, allowed for another look at the variety of schools we have in Queens and a chance to get last minute questions answere,” said Assemblywoman Nolan.

Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez, whose district includes parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, took a trip to Long Island City on Nov. 9. As the ranking Democrat on the House Small Business Committee, she wanted to visit the Entrepreneur Space, a 12,500square-foot food-and-business incubator at 36-46 37th St. Know as the “E-Space,” the building houses various fully equipped kitchens, office space and classrooms that can be rented at below-market rates. Velázquez discussed government programs aimed at helping small businesses with Queens Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Seth Bornstein before touring the kitchen, where she met Odette Fada, who was preparing lasagna for her company Rana Usa. In photo are (from left) E-Space Founder Kathrine Gregory, Fada, Velázquez and Bornstein. They are wearing hair nets as required by city law.

School Induction

Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) was inducted into the first class of the Power Memorial Academy Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 5th in Manhattan. Crowley graduated from the school in 1980 and was inducted into the hall by his brother Sean (third from left) class of 1983. The alumni of the prestigious Irish Christian Brothers high school, which closed in 1984, raised money for a scholarship fund to send young men to Catholic high schools. Also pictured are former NBA player, attorney and sports broadcaster Len Elmore, class of 1970 – who served as the master of ceremonies at the event – and Alumni Association President Andrew Pisani.

Fire Safety Tips This Thanksgiving With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the American Red Cross encourages families to prevent kitchen fires by taking some basic safety measures. In the U.S., Thanksgiving is the peak day for cooking fires, 90 percent of which are caused by unattended cooking.

-Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen even for a short period of time, turn off the stove. -Keep anything that can catch fire—potholders, wooden utensils, food wrappers or towels away from your stove top. -Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove. -Turn the handles of pots and pans on the stove inward to avoid accidents.

Scouts March With Veterans Peter A. Ross

Citywide there was a lot of activity last week honoring our country’s veterans for Veterans Day and this recognition was not lost on our local Scout youth. Boy Scout Troop 390, based at St. Teresa’s RC Church, was busy this past Friday helping to give the proper accolades to those that serve to protect our freedom and that of others around the globe. On Friday November 11th the boys were up early to assist with color guard duties at the Veterans Day ceremony hosted here locally by the John V. Daniels VFW Post # 2813 at JV Daniels Park at 52nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue. As always it was an honor to perform this task for the Post which often invites and utilizes the Troop at their functions. Afterward, the Troop had the privilege to march in the NYC Veterans Day parade in Manhattan. The Troop had requested months ago to march in the parade and was supervised and coordinated by Scoutmaster Eduardo Avila, who has been deployed overseas in the past and is still an active Army Reservist at present. They carried the John V. Daniels VFW Post # 2813 colors for our local vets and although they did not march until near the end of the parade the wait allowed the boys to view and interact with some of the thousands of veterans who marched and gave them the opportunity to see all the branches of service at one time and some of the apparatus with which they use in their work every day. Most importantly it provided the opportunity for them to thank and acknowledge the veterans directly for their service, in the past, present and their readiness and willingness to continue to do so in the future.
