First Ever Community Design Initiative For Noonan Playground On Monday, October 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined students from PS 199 and community members to kick off his Noonan Park Community Design Initiative in Sunnyside. Van Bramer has secured $600,000 in order to redesign Noonan Park’s Playground. In an effort to increase transparency and community input in the playground’s design process, Van Bramer will be the first elected official to ask the community for their vision for the design of a public space.

Starting October 3rd, and running through October 31st, there will be suggestion boxes placed in the Sunnyside Library and Van Bramer’s District Office (47-01 Queens Blvd., Suite 205) where the community can fill out suggestion forms and voice their ideas for the new Noonan Playground.

Children and Community Invited to submit ideas for Park Redesign The Council Member’s office will also be receiving suggestions by phone and email.

At the kick-off event, the students of PS 199 kids shared their ideas by drawing and writing their ideas for the perfect playground.

The idea to improve Noonan was originally suggested by 4th graders at PS 199 where the Council Member spoke during its career day last year. A little girl in the class referred to the park as “Rainbow Park,” and said it would be a good idea to clean it. The Council

Columbia Association of the Department of Correction City of New York (NYCDOC) celebrated their 56th Anniversary with their annual dinner dance.

Our community’s own Vincent Renda, was honored at the dinner and received Columbia Association’s 2011 Community Service Award for his part as Chairman of Sunnyside/ Woodside Boys & Girls Club.

Member then joined students, teachers, and the principal for a cleanup day at Noonan.

After the first visit, Van Bramer sought and secured the necessary funding.

The Council Member wants and welcomes suggestions and ideas about how to improve the park and has already received a number of terrific suggestions on how the park should be improved. These suggestions from constituents have been emailed in and conveyed in person while the Council

Member is out in the community. Anyone wishing to offer suggestions should email jvanbramer@council.nyc.gov.

“The community deserves to have a voice in how their playground looks. The children in the community have wonderful imaginations, and exercising their ideas artistically is a great way to express their vision. The children of PS 199 shared great ideas this morning and I look forward to seeing what ideas everyone has to share,” said CM Van Bramer.

On Wednesday, October 5th, CM Jimmy Van Bramer joined students, parents and staff at IS 125 in Woodside to donate supplies from his 2nd Annual ‘Back to School Supply Drive’ for local schools. This year, the Council Member’s drive received over 4,000 items that were donated by community members. The items were

dropped off at five libraries throughout District 26 and his district office at 47-01 Queens Boulevard. The items included book bags, writing materials, rulers, and much more!

The Council Member will next deliver donated school supplies to PS 166 in Dutch Kills.

in and does their part to better their surroundings and enhance the lives of all of our children. I would like to thank all of those who donated to the drive. You have helped these students receive the tools they need to succeed.

Lions Club Celebrates 15 Years

The Sunnyside/Woodside M.G. Lottero Club celebrated the 15th Anniversary of their charter this past weekend. The Lion’s is a community service club who actively pursues their motto of “We Serve,” by collecting for the food pantries in the area, helping seniors at the Queens Blvd. Extended Care and hosting Halloween and Easter parties for the community children, to name a few.

There were many guests in attendance to share in the club’s celebration, including Sunnyside’s popular operatic singer, Paula Hostetter, who graced the crowd by singing, “God Bless America.”

The Three original charter members honored, who are still active are Ruth HaupertLengemann, Frances M. Schmidt, and Maura Wilson. These members were instrumental

in the founding of the club along with founding member Maria Lottero, whom the club is named after. They were given Certificates of Merit from the office of Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, represented that evening by San Vargas. Marie Konecko, member of the Anoroc Club and a Lion Member, handed out the Certificates to the Honorees. Lion’s International Zone Chairperson, Adina Callendar was in attendance to award the 15th year charter pins to the honorees. She also presented new Lion’s pins to all the members under new president, Norberto Saldana.

There was an abundance of delicious food and the cake, displaying the colors of the club, was a big hit. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere of community friendship, which encouraged a few guests to join the club.

Summer Scout Events & Open Registration

The end of the school year and beginning of summer vacation may have meant the end of weekly meetings for July and August but not the end of activities for our local Boy Scout Troop 390. The first week of July saw several boys start the week by attending an impromptu trip with Scoutmaster Eduardo Avila to Governor’s Island where they availed themselves of the free bike rentals for an hour, toured briefly some of the historical buildings on the site and took in the view of New York’s harbor.

The end of the same week a larger group converged on the John V. Daniel’s VFW Post building for an annual cleanup and inventory of the troop’s equipment in preparation for the new scouting season.

The end of the month was just as busy as the Scouts conducted their first service project of the season.

On July 22 the Scouts were broke up into two groups, led by Rennie S. and Bladimir R. under the guidance of Assistance Scoutmaster Peter Ross, who trekked through Second and First Calvary Cemeteries planting flags on the graves of the American Legion Seventh Regiment Post members and various other veterans from as far back as the Civil War and the Spanish American War through conflicts of the 20th Century. This project, specifically for the deceased American Legion Post veterans, was carried out annually since the sixties by several Boy Scout units (including our neighborhood’s own now defunct Troop 172), but had not been accomplished over the last decade due to the lack of flag donations and manpower (as the neighborhood had no Boy Scout group for almost six years!). The boys braved through what was the hottest day of the year, some for almost six hours, but in the end the project had to be completed on an additional day, September 2nd. In all approximately 112 veterans

graves were decorated and the Troop would like to acknowledge the assistance of the John V. Daniel’s VFW Post 2813 and Post Commander Marvin Jeffcoat for coordinating the donation of the flags and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs for providing the flags. The Troop plans to make this an annual event to be conducted closer to Memorial Day, as it had been in years past.

On July 30 the Troop floated on the Staten Island Ferry to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark to attend the Staten Island Yankees annual Scout Night.

This event has actually become so popular that the team held two nights this year.

The boys watched the “Baby Bombers” face the Jamestown Jammers who unfortunately had the Yankees number on this night, thoroughly beating the Yanks on both sides of the ball.

The night was not a total ruin though as the boys from our Troop and dozens of other boy and cub scout units were able to watch the after-game fireworks, run the bases, then camp out under the stars on the outfield. The adventure had only started though as August saw

a junior leader whitewater-rafting trip down the Delaware River followed by an overnight campout in Barryville, New York. The trip was limited to those scouts Second Class rank and above (a little incentive for the newer boys to hit their advancement a little harder) and was the second junior leader

outbound trip of the year for the boys. The middle of August saw six of our boys preparing for summer camp at the Ten Mile River Reservation Aquehonga Scout Camp in Narrowsburg, New York.

Under the watchful eyes of Scoutmasters Gordon Bennett and Michael Schulte of Troop 106 and their staff, Troop 390’s boys

worked hard on a variety of topics from fishing and astronomy to environmental science and soil and water conservation completing 13 merit badges and obtaining partials in 14 others. One boy, Steven V., also completed the Mile Swim Award for, you guessed it, completing a consecutive swim of at least a mile and the associated preswim water safety tests. Although turnout this year was under last years, the results were very encouraging and more importantly the Scouts had a good time in nature away from the computers, cell phones and other gadgets that have become such a close part of their everyday lives.

The Troop would like to thank those parents that assisted with transportation, Scout Executives Christina Jean-Baptiste and Joe Bradley for their assistance in helping process the boys applications, and to all those who donated to the Friends of Scouting campaigns that helped raise money to assist Scouts in financial need with going to camp, which included some of our own. Troop to an anonymous gentleman (we will call him “Ray”) for the generous donation he made on behalf of his mother to the Troop back in February which was used as requested to assist the boys with summer camp (the donation was used to offset transportation costs for all the boys attending).

The Troop has also begun their new season. The Troop invites all boys ages 10 Ω to 17 years old to come join Boy Scout Troop 390 which meets Friday nights from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in the auditorium of St. Teresa’s RC Church, located at 50-20 45th Street in Woodside, Queens. Registration is open and many activities are being planned including overnight camping, hiking trips, orienteering competitions, service projects and sports events. AN EYE ON GUTHRIE

Hi Doctor Guthrie,

The summer’s almost over. Why are my eyes burning and itching so much? And now I am starting to get a tender, red bump on my eyelid too. Help!

I was happy to attend the “Blessing of All God’s Creatures “on Sunday October 2nd at All Saints’ Church on 46th Street. Unfortunately I could not talk my cat “Munchkin” into coming - she is a recluse who does not like to leave the house (I hope that’s the case… I’m sure she’s not a heathen). As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd. On this Feast of St. Frances of Assisi a procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, which he wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things.

“All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”

Farther Joseph Jerome conducted a beautiful service as he welcomed about 25 families in the beautiful garden of the Church. This year unlike past years, only dogs showed up with their owners on a leash. Lucy DeFrancesco, a member of the Church Vestry, did a reading from Isaiah and we all then joined in singing “Joyful, Joyful” and a beautiful service followed, lasting about a half an hour. During that time, each person told of the love of their animal and why they wanted a blessing for their pet. Father Jerome visited every animal personally and gave each their own special blessing. One would have to be there to see the bond between pet and owner. There are many single householders in which a pet can be a true companion. Arriving home from work to find a furry creature overjoyed at your return is truly a blessing. As well as having your lap warmed with a furry creature. The lovely ceremony was truly beautiful.

Great topic! Having been practicing ophthalmology for more than 20 years, I’ve noticed a real cluster of eye maladies when the seasons are changing. My patients come in seeking help with flare-ups of seasonal allergies, eyelids getting puffy and red, inflammations of the inside of the eye (uveitis) and some recurrences of both corneal infections and corneal surface conditions. It seems that our bodies, our hormones, are sensing that the season around us is about to change. These conditions present themselves in the Spring/Summer turnover of seasons, but seem to be more frequent in the Summer/Autumn transition.

Experience has also taught me that those of my patients that seek care early with me get better faster. It is always better not to wait—occasionally conditions do get better on their own, but most times infections, inflammations, and allergies get horrible if not addressed.

Early intervention is very effective with all the “seasonal change” problems. I would much rather ‘nip a problem in the butt’ early and be able to use less medicine. It’s such a glorious time of the year...the leaves changing colors...let’s enjoy it with healthy eyes!

Congressman Crowley Dear Editor, I was delighted sometime ago when I heard our Congressman Crowley on the ‘John Bachelor’ radio talk show “intelligent talk radio.” I thought of that last week when Congressman Crowley was blamed for the Democratic defeat

in last week’s congressional election. It was clearly an Obama defeat, and for many reasons – not Joe Crowley’s.

As an Assemblyman years ago, Mr. Crowley bravely challenged the corrupt leadership of Sheldon Silver in Albany. A year ago, I urged Congressman Crowley to challenge the idiotic leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who made little sense, and was overwhelm-

ingly repudiated nationally last November when the Democrats lost of House of Representatives by a wide margin.

A new challenge for our intrepid Congressman: for 2012, for the good of the country and the Democratic party, challenge that amateur now in the White House, the Socialist Barack Obama.

Free Help In Applying For Diversity Visa Lottery

Queens Library is partnering with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to assist immigrants who want to apply for the Diversity Visa Lottery (DV-2013). Applications must be electronically submitted no later than noon on Saturday, November 5th. No paper applications will be accepted. Use of Queens Library’s computers is free of charge.

Customers wishing to fill out

the application at the library should sign-up for a one-hour computer at any library location during regular service hours. A Queens Library card is required to use the computer. A Queens Library card is free of charge.

Computers that do not require a library card have been reserved specifically for this purpose during the dates and times listed below. The Diversity Visa Lottery application is composed of three parts. It may require more than 30 minutes to complete. After the US Open, Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in Sunnyside

Molise Region had its 1 Nicola Scarano Doppio Giallo Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in cooperation with the Sunnyside Tennis Club. The Italian words doppio giallo (pronounced dopeee-o jallo) mean double mystery; that is, the participants do not know who their doubles partners will be for any of the tournament rounds, as participants cannot play with the same partner twice. Less skilled players have the opportunity, if lucky in the random draw, to play in more matches than they might otherwise. More skilled players have the opportunity, depending on the random draw, to showcase their skills as they try to complement the skills of their partners. In this way, a weaker but more fortunate player has the opportunity to make it to the final stage of the tournament.

Nicola Scarano, after whom this tournament was named, lived in Campobasso, Molise in the southern region of Italy. Apart from being a successful community builder, in 1981 he proposed and organized the first Doppio Giallo in Campobasso. Scarano worked for the community, organizing blood drives, organ donations, sporting events and other community-minded activities. It is in honor of his memory and his service that we replicate the Doppio Giallo here in New York. Nicola Scarano died suddenly in 1996 at the young age of 56.

The 2011 winners of the Doppio Giallo were Ivan Srb and Charles Erdokian who beat Angela Badalamenti and Elliot Weinstein in the final match.

Trophies and medals were distributed and all enjoyed a delicious BBQ/lunch featuring homemade Italian dishes like sausage & peppers, pasta con pesto, and pasta tricolore primavera.

The organizers couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather and were gratified by the wonderful turnout for this event. Participants left happy, excited and looking forward to the 2012 Doppio Giallo.
