ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL AWS NEWS WEEKLY — Friday 18th September 2015 Dear parents, carers, students and staff and governor colleagues,

The Governing Body at Allestree Woodlands School In all types of schools, governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions: a. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; b. Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and c. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent. Our Chair of Governors is the Rev. William Bates: I’ve been chair of governors at Woodlands since 2012 having joined the board in 2008. My role is to take a lead in organising the board’s work and in ensuring that what we do complies with the Law, though that seems to change slightly every few months! Woodlands currently has eighteen governors and I believe that the level of commitment, questioning and discussion among us is a strength. All of us want Woodlands to continue to improve what it does for students and we’ve recently agreed a new vision statement for the school. One of my early memories as a primary school governor in the 1980s is of long discussions about the state of the football pitch. At that time there was little sense of the head being held to account for the way a school was run. In my current role I work quite closely with the head and given recent staff changes, the new build and daily management issues I very much respect the job that he and his team are doing. Allestree Woodlands is a very vibrant place and I’m often struck by the professionalism, commitment and care given by staff. While education is a serious business, I appreciate the humour and banter that goes on as well. Over the last few years the trend has been to increase the robustness of systems whether that’s in finance, staff appraisal, or safeguarding. While that’s right and good, our main concern is to serve the needs of students currently at the school and do the best we can for them. In the next few weeks we will be seeking to recruit new governors and I hope you will consider serving the school in this way.

We are really keen that parents take up this entitlement so please do not hesitate to contact us.
