Dear Parents and Carers, Students, Governors and Members of Staff Welcome to this week’s edition of our school’s newsletter GOOD LUCK MR BRADY

Our very much loved Mr Brady will be leaving Allestree Woodlands at the end of the term to embark on his next adventure. He has genuinely cared for the school, his staff and students for 14 years. We will miss his fatherly smile each morning, his ability to see the good in people and his kind and positive approach to life. We thank you Mr Brady for all your dedication and commitment to our school.

During our school Book Festival Week, students took part in a 'Poster Quiz.' To enter students had to find the answers to 15 questions by reading posters dotted around the Learning Resource Centre. Congratulations to all the students who took the time to complete this quiz and especially to Hassan who won the prize!

Congratulations to Grace and Ben who took part in the, 'Vote for your Favourite Poem,' competition during our Book Festival week. They each won a selection of sweets and a fiction book for their efforts. All students who actively took part in an activity during our Book Festival week received achievement points to acknowledge their effort.

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL SPECTROSCOPY WORKSHOP

The University of Leicester came into school on Monday 1st July to run a spectroscopy workshop for our Year 12 chemistry students. The ‘Spectroscopy in a Suitcase’ scheme run by the Royal Society of Chemistry, covers the principles of spectroscopic techniques, students needed to use such methods to solve a murder mystery! Students got hands-on experience using an infrared instrument which costs in excess of £25,000! Our students really enjoyed the experience and it gave them the chance to put what they had learnt in lessons into context. We are hoping to further consolidate what students have learnt during this workshop with visits to the University of Nottingham and Lubrizol in the new academic year. Thank you to the University of Leicester and the Royal Society of Chemistry for making this workshop possible.

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL SPEAKING COMPETITION 2019

As a result of the school’s successful Orators’ Award we were delighted to take four students on to the Derby Schools/Colleges Public Speaking Competition which took place on the Thursday 4th July and Friday 5th July 2019. The speakers really impressed the judges with Freya and Erica going through to the Friday finals. The judges said it was difficult to choose an overall winner because of the quality of the speeches. Our students learnt speaking techniques from the Lost Boys’ Theatre company director and then deployed these techniques when they deliver their excellent speeches to the public of Derby.

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL CITY SPORTS

Following on from our PE assemblies last week, we had a very successful day at the City Sports championships. We had 19 students make the podium throughout the day (please see list below). Imogen Morland broke the year 9 girls 300m record. A fantastic achievement! We had several students gaining 4th place, and most made A finals.
