Dear Parents and Carers, Students, Governors and Members of Staff Welcome to this week’s edition of our school’s newsletter

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL W O R L D B O O K D AY

There have been lots of exciting things happening for World Book Day week, ranging from 'Book Factor' in the Library, where students could listen to and vote on the most entertaining book reading, to a book cafe and a cake sale, all in aid of Book Aid International. There was also an opportunity to enter the school's own 'Flash Fiction' competition; a challenge to write a story in just fifty words. This was based on the Derby Book Festival competition, which some pupils have already entered. Fingers crossed for their entries! Form groups have been involved in a 'Decorate Your Door' competition, using creative thinking skills to promote a chosen genre. They have also taken part in a 'Treasure Hunt' quiz, where not only have students had to know the answer to the question, they have also had to find the member of staff wearing a badge with the right answer! We hope everyone has enjoyed the World Book Day week as much as we have.

Book Factor 2018, an interactive book event for students, took place in the Learning Resource Centre during lunchtime. The sixth form Literacy Ambassadors and Miss Heron presented thoughts about one of their favourite books and then students had the opportunity to vote for who they thought presented the best book on a live system set up by our IT department. Thank you to all who joined in with this fun event, especially the presenters and the year 11 students who helped with the voting! Joanna Weightman Learning Resources Mentor

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL SKI TRIP TO ANDORRA

Ski Trip – Andorra 2018 During half term, 57 students and 7 members of staff had a fantastic week skiing in Vallnord, Andorra. The snow conditions were amazing and we had a couple of blue sky, knee deep powder days, which will long live in the memory. During the evenings we had a great time bowling, swimming and having a pizza night in a local restaurant. All in all – a brilliant trip! Stop Press! Next year’s trip is already being planned. We shall be going to Tarvisio in Italy next February half term. Mr Bate and Mr Hammond will be launching the trip in assemblies next week and letters will be distributed. Deposits will need to be returned promptly as demand is sure to be high!

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

The drama department would like to say a massive well done to all students who took part either on stage or behind the scenes, in this year’s school play ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. The students began rehearsing back in September and have shown a great level of commitment to bring the weird and wonderful story of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” to life, we are very proud of them all. The performances took place over two nights and we would like to thank all who came along and supported the performance. The money raised from the raffle on both nights will be sent to the Nottingham Children’s Hospital Big Appeal to help support poorly children and their families during a stay in hospital. Well done again to all of the cast and crew, we hope you had a well-deserved relaxing half term break, we are very proud of you all!! Many Thanks Helen Burton

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL BUDDY READING

The Sixth Form Buddy Reading Programme, where our Woodlands Sixth Formers read with the students at Portway Juniour School, has existed now for many years and is a very valuable programme that many of our students have fond memories of doing themselves. Here are a few photos of our current sixth formers enjoying reading with their buddy.

FUNDRAISING

Sixth formers Sara Djalalvandi, Freddie Baldwin and Nyah Hudson have been raising money for the charity Rams for Kenya by selling brownies to staff and students. The charity helps with the funding of the installation of running water, building classrooms, providing resources, supporting teachers, completing maintenance and site improvement.

ALLESTREE WOODLANDS SCHOOL Y O U T H M A J O R E L E C T I O N R E S U LT S Firstly I would like to thank you, your school and students for taking part in the recent Youth Mayor Elections. The event was hugely successful. There were over 10,000 ballot papers issued for secondary pupils across 17 school and college venues. There were more than 7,000 votes cast, resulting in a 70% turnout. In comparison, a normal Local Election across the city would have a turnout of 35%.. We really appreciate the opportunity to engage with so many schools and young people across the city in encouraging them to experience the voting process. It all helps students to understand and take part when they are eligible to vote in traditional elections themselves on reaching 18. The result of the Youth Mayor Election for 2018/19 is as follows: The 2018/19 Youth Mayor will be Frederico Almeida, Student at Bemrose School. The Deputy Youth Mayor will be Sonja Sebastian, Student at Derby College. Many congratulations to both candidates. They will take up their new roles when they are formally appointed at the Council’s Annual Meeting in May 2018. Special thanks to all of the candidates that took part in the process at the various stages, they all did incredibly well. We look forward to working with you all again for the 2019/20 Youth Mayor Election. Mick Styne MBA, AEA (Cert) Elections and Local Land Charges Manager

RAINBOW’S HOSPICE FUNDRAISING

The amount raised for the Rainbow’s Hospice day was £457.54. Many thanks to all the staff and students who took part in this fund raising day.
