A Message from J.J. Hollie

Summer is here! While that means

school break, family vacations and summer hours to some, for The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce it means continuing to advocate for the business community, create marketing and networking opportunities, serve as a professional and community resource, and support our local nonprofits. Be healthy. Have fun...Health, Wellness and Fitness Expo Recap Hundreds of residents and visitors took advantage of the opportunity to learn about moving more, eating better and stressing less at the Health, Wellness and Fitness Expo held May 18 at Market Street in The Woodlands. Highlighted by goat yoga and 40-plus exhibitors, the event offered free health screenings and children’s activities including a teddy bear clinic. Many thanks to those who participated in this year’s event, especially our underwriting sponsor America’s ER. Connecting leaders and influencing decisions is a natural role for the Chamber. The Woodlands Area Chamber is well-known for political advocacy on behalf of member businesses and industries, meeting regularly with elected officials on topics such transportation, health care, education, workforce development and tourism. In fact, in February, we traveled to the Texas State Capitol with 150 business leaders from Montgomery County to present our 2019 legislative priorities directly to policymakers. After a 140-day marathon in Austin, lawmakers left town May 27 after considering more than 7,300 pieces of legislation during the recently concluded 2 woodlandschamber.org JUNE 2019

session. On July 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lone Star College System, the Chamber, along with Texas Association of Business, invites you to a special review of the 86th Legislative Session. It is a unique opportunity to hear from State lawmakers and area experts on what was accomplished during session and what issues our state and specifically The Woodlands and surrounding communities still face. Learn more and register at txbiz.org/events. Last but not least…don’t miss the opportunity to promote your organization in the 2019-2020 Community Guide and Membership Directory The Woodlands Area Community Guide and Membership Directory is going to print soon! More than 10,000 copies are distributed throughout the year to Chamber members, relocation and visitor packets, real estate offices, hotels, apartment complexes and new residents. Take advantage of this special opportunity that our 2019-2020 directory presents and secure your ad today. The deadline to reserve ad space is June 28. Engagingand Empowering

future leaders of The Woodlands area

Are you looking to meet and network with other young professional people like yourself? The Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (also referred to as YPN) provides The Woodlands area’s future leaders with the opportunity to grow their leadership skills, network with peers, and engage with political, civic and business leaders.

What benefits does a YPN membership provide? • Numerous opportunities to meet, socialize, network, seek advice and share experiences with other ambitious and like-minded professionals. • Access to a variety of professional development programs specifically designed to heighten knowledge and contribute to the success of young professionals. • Guidance from area business leaders

Why We Exist It is our belief that a community influenced by young professionals is a community that attracts and entertains them. Core to the Young Professionals Network’s strategic agenda is the brief that the more informed, involved and networked young professionals are, the most influence they have on The Woodlands area community.

What is a Young Professional? We are a group of people, ages 21-40, interested in enhancing ourselves and the future of our community. We work hard, we like to socialize, we’re technologically savvy, and we make the change that we want to see in our lives, our businesses and our community.

What to Expect Through the Young Professionals Network you will have the opportunity to meet people you would never otherwise have met and learn about businesses you never would have known about and participate in events that never would have existed. You will have access to numerous business programs and learn about the happenings in the community that will have an impact on your life.

Their clientele ranges from first-time homebuyers, experienced homeowners, to entrepreneurs searching for investment properties. Each and every client receives the Richmond Realty Group distinctive service of “Exceeding Expectations Always.” The group also includes Marketing Coordinator Aleisha Bannenberg, Transaction

We love their combined years of experience and we have learned a lot through them during this process.” Richly steeped in serving the community, Richmond Realty Group RE/MAX The Woodlands & Spring once again presented the “Shelter for Shelter” fundraising event benefitting YES to YOUTH - Montgomery County Youth Services for the third year in a row on May 9.

Transportation Education Council

BUSINESS VOTES DAY

MUD AND RUD UPDATE

he Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Advocacy Council encourages our members to get involved in the political process and understand how decisions made by those elected impact the businesses we serve. In light of this, the Business Advocacy Council hosted a “Business Vote Day” in April as a rally to encourage the business community to get out and vote early for the May 4th election. Thanks to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, we took a few of our friends at Calvetti Ferguson, The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership and Corporate Incentives, Inc. to the polls in style. We hope to inspire every chamber business to host their own Get Out the Vote campaign within their company.

The Transportation Education Council received an update about The Woodlands Municipal Utility Districts and Road Utility District Friday, May 3.

T

James Stinson, the general manager of The Woodlands Water Agency (formerly known as The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency), informed the council about the agency’s role in managing water distribution and waste water collection services for 10 municipal utility districts in The Woodlands. Stinson reported the agency operates and maintains 450 miles of water distribution lines and 5,000 fire hydrants in the township. In addition to learning about MUDs, the council also heard from Gil Staley, president of The Woodlands Economic Development Partnership and board member of The Woodlands Road Utility District, and Dan Kolkhorst, vice president of The Woodlands Development Company.

About the Transportation Education Council The Transportation Education Council facilitates discussion and action related to the business perspective of transportation and educates members on local and state policy issues. The council holds meetings on the first Friday of every month at 8 a.m. at The Chamber and all members are welcome.

If you are interested in hosting a nonpartisan campaign within your company, our Governmental Affairs Department here at The Chamber will be happy to assist you in getting started by providing all the tools and resources you may need to make sure your employees are informed on all the issues, are registered to vote, know when and where to vote, as well as provide you with sample ballots for the upcoming election. If you have any questions at all, please contact Margo McZeal, director of governmental affairs, at margo.mczeal@ woodlandschamber.org or 281-363-8106. 2019 MONTGOMERY COUNTY ELECTION CALENDAR Election Day: NOV 5, 2019 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early Voting: OCT 21-26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. OCT 28-30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. OCT 31-NOV 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check your voter registration status, find your voting precinct with polling location map, pictures and directions, a sample ballot and get links to your elected officials at mctx.org/election.

TEAMS IN ACTION Community Relations Team / VOLUNTEERS Our Volunteers Sparkle, Volunteers Are A Community’s Best Friend

T

he Community Relations Team “CRT” truly raised the bar at this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon honoring the Chamber’s non-profit members. Incorporating this year’s theme – Our Volunteers Sparkle, they transformed the room with elaborate, sparkly, yet elegant décor.

the diplomat team

of the Month:

DIPLOMAT TEAM WORK♦ LIFE♦BALANCE Team was honored as the April Diplomat Team of the Month.

Upon entry into the luncheon, guests saw the room lit up. Guests were treated to a presentation that scrolled on the big screen showcasing the many activities and events that showcased the impact our local non-profits made in our community. LaToya Carter, Yes to Youth HR Generalist, touched everyone by her story and showed us how Montgomery County takes care of its own. The work we all do as volunteers has an impact on others and we need to all pay it forward. Chris Elmi, Heritage Texas Properties, served as this year’s Community Relations Team Leader and Jennifer Majors Baca, JMB Insurance Solutions served as Co-Team Leader. The vision for this year’s theme had been something that Chris had thrown out there a few years, so it was fitting that the team really rallied behind him and made this year’s décor magical. These two leaders along with their team worked hard to make this year’s luncheon special for those individuals who give so graciously of their time and talents to make our community such a fabulous place to live and work.

The team would like to give a special thank you to Consolidated Communications, Waste Connections, Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Parish, MD Anderson Cancer Center – The Woodlands, Spinal Care Chiropractic Center, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, Woodforest National Bank and all our other sponsors for helping us recognize our volunteers. And a special thank you to The Republic Grille for catering the event. If you are looking for a way to help a variety of Non-Profit Organizations through community service projects, contact Cyndi Alvarado at (281) 363-8109 or cyndi.alvarado@ woodlandschamber.org. You can learn more about the great things the Community Relations Team has in store for the coming year.

Diplomats are active chamber members that serve as an extension of the membership department. Their volunteer role is to welcome new members, coordinate monthly business connection events and assist in member retention. If you would like to be paired with a diplomat to learn how to make the most of your membership, contact Cyndi Alvarado, vice president of membership at info@woodlandschamber.org.

the diplomat team DIPLOMAT

of the Month: KATHY RIFAAT

Congratulations to Kathy Rifaat of Community Assistance Center on being named the Diplomat of the Month for April. We truly value Kathy’s commitment to the Chamber. She not only serves on our Board of Directors, but also our Diplomat Team. She has been a strong advocate for the Chamber. When we think of someone that is a good representative of our four core functions, Kathy is one of those names that comes to mind. Despite the demanding job, she is always there to lend an ear to a new member, helping guide them through membership and and serving as a resource for them. She volunteers at a Business Connection Events and stands alongside the Chamber in support many of the community service projects for other nonprofit organizations.

Congratulations, Kathy!
