A Message from J.J. Hollie

The Chamber…The Pathway to Opportunity

As we ramp up our business advocacy initiatives and election activities this fall, we will continue to offer the traditional events and programs that our members deserve – events that allow them to celebrate one another and to grow their business by connecting with customers and new markets. As the largest business organization in the Houston region, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is more than 1,500 members strong. Those members are people who believe in investing in our community. They are people who understand that chamber membership is more than just a path to network or grow their individual business. It certainly is that. But it is much more. Every member adds strength to our ability to affect legislative change and foster economic growth. Together, we are creating a shared, collaborative vision of certainty and prosperity in The Woodlands area. Since 1978, the Chamber has served its broad membership by working toward a singular goal of helping businesses succeed. We’ve combined the power of people, with our legacy of leadership and business advocacy, to drive economic growth.

2 woodlandschamber.org SEPTEMBER 2019

I invite you to partner with the Chamber on this journey and discover the various advocacy, networking and educational opportunities we present along the path. With more than 100 business networking events, educational conferences and seminars every year, the Chamber offers you the market access, diversity, and resources you need to grow a successful business. Take advantage of these resources. Check out a listing of our upcoming events on our website at woodlandschamber.org/calendar. And while you’re there, I encourage you to learn more about our volunteer teams at woodlandschamber.org/teams. If you have any questions or would like additional information, give us a call at 281-367-5777, email us at info@woodlandschamber.org or stop by our office at 9320 Lakeside Blvd., Suite 200, The Woodlands, TX 77381. CHAMBER NEWS

Founding Chamber Member Linda Fern Woods remembered as a community, business leader A beloved businesswoman who worked for the betterment of South Montgomery County for more than 40 years passed away August 4, 2019 at the age of 76. From early on, Linda Fern Woods was a tireless advocate for The Woodlands area business community. When she arrived in Shenandoah in 1973, she started serving the community by knocking on doors to support an incorporation vote that passed by a mere 13 votes. In the course of the next four decades, she went on to hold many leadership positions at area nonprofits. Chamber Member Sharla Grayson and Chamber Lifetime Member Linda Fern Woods enjoy a business connection event hosted by the Chamber.

Mrs. Woods was also one of the founding members of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the organization formerly known as the South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber. When asked about the development of the Chamber in a 2013 Community Impact Newspaper article, she said, “We decided because South Montgomery County was growing at a very rapid rate in that time period, that we needed a chamber of commerce to support commerce. There are many success stories which have come out of the chamber, and it certainly has played its part in the development of South Montgomery County.” The Woodlands Area Chamber and Montgomery County at large benefitted greatly from Mrs. Woods’ wisdom, integrity and dedication to the community. She left a remarkable legacy and will be missed by many.

As part of its Change for Charity initiative, Market Street recently donated more than $10,000 to ASD Hope, Inc. Texas Autism Academy. The funds were raised by Market Street patrons and The Woodlands Car Club event attendees during the second quarter of 2019 and will assist the organization, which is a private school for children on the Autism Spectrum that incorporates the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis into daily instruction and curriculum.

During the 5th anniversary of The Republic Grille in The Woodlands’ Panther Creek Shopping Center, $6,000 was donated from proceeds to local first responder charities: The Woodlands Fire Dept. and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Owner Terry McBurney presented $3,000 to Erik Secrest of The Woodlands Professional Fire Fighters Association and Wayne Walker, Retired Deputy Chief, The Woodlands Fire Dept., and $3,000 to Steve Squier of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Officers Fund.

DLP Coaching Principal, Elizabeth De La Pena Veeser, presented “Connect 2 Impact” to the local Hispanic Alliance for Care Enhancement group. In this workshop, she presented a new approach to networking and encouraged participants to go from small talk to smart talk in forming deeper connections.

EDUCATION Lone Star College and Springfield College are making it easier for students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Human Services thanks to a new initiative taking place between the two institutions. “Students will now be able to earn their Associate Degree in Human Services at Lone Star College then transfer directly to Springfield College to complete their four-year degree at LSCUniversity Center at The Woodlands,” said Stephen C.
