A Message from J.J. Hollie The community spirit of giving is alive and well in The Woodlands area!

Without a doubt, South Montgomery County nonprofits make up the heart and soul of our community. They touch the lives of every resident and provide vital resources, services, education and employment for our region. At The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, we think it’s important companies understand that giving back is a part of doing business and feeling connected to and supported by the community. On April 26, The Chamber’s Community Relations Team (CRT) hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to celebrate the tremendous contributions that nonprofits and their devoted volunteers make to the community. The event was a huge success! Our keynote speaker LaToya Carter of Yes to Youth – Montgomery County Youth Services set the tone for an inspiring, forward-looking luncheon that left everyone in attendance with new energy and ideas. Throughout the year, CRT provides opportunities to develop and strengthen partnerships among the nonprofit, private and public sectors to raise awareness of the economic impact, needs, and values of local nonprofits. 2 woodlandschamber.org MAY 2019

Whether it’s through giving, volunteering or lending your talent, I encourage you to join us in supporting our nonprofit community and their important work. Open to all Chamber members, CRT is tasked with new projects every month that allow businesses, their employees and individuals to help make a difference in the community. Read more about CRT’s efforts, upcoming projects and learn how to submit your own service project for consideration on page 6 and at WoodlandsChamber.org/CRT. Lastly, if your organization is a current member of The Chamber (and a nonprofit), we welcome you to submit your information and donation needs to WoodlandsChamber.org/GivingGuide before May 31, and we’ll provide a complimentary listing in the featured Giving Guide section of our 2019-2020 Community Guide and Membership Directory. Learn more about the Giving Guide on page 13 or contact Lauren Joerg at Lauren.Joerg@ woodlandschamber.org.

Inside the

Community Relations Team…

“What is CRT,” you ask? The Chamber has a Community Relations Team “CRT” that coordinates community service projects with non-profit Chamber members. In speaking with members, this seems to be an unknown gem that many members are unaware of or have misconceptions on who can be involved.

One of The Chamber’s core functions is supporting charitable causes. This team was designed to fit that need. The team is comprised of business leaders that have the heart for giving and a spirit of generosity. It is an opportunity for nonprofits, individual small businesses and corporations to get together and contribute to the betterment of their community. All Chamber members are welcome. CRT has established a montly schedule of projects that include fundraisers, donation drives and community service days in support of The Chamber’s 170-plus nonprofit organizations such as Meals on Wheels Montgomery County, Habitat for Humanity, New Danville, and so much more. Every service project is a rewarding experience for the team as they work to fulfill thir own purpose as well as the vision of The Chamber. CRT is thrilled about some of the nonprofits they will serve over the course of the remaining year: Montgomery County Women’s Center, Rotary Club of the Woodlands Rotary House, Education for Tomorrow Alliance and The Woodlands Pride, Inc.

Submit Your Service Project for Consideration

E

very summer CRT takes applications from nonprofit members for community service projects for the team to consider. Applications are emailed out to every eligible nonprofit, asking for specific details about their project. Upon submission, applicants are invited to present their project to the team and answer any questions. Those that have received CRT assistance in the prior two years are not eligible to reapply until year three. Following the strategic planning meeting, the team deliberates over the many project opportunities and selects a project a month to support for the calendar year.

If you are looking for a way to help a variety of nonprofit organizations through community service projects, or you are a Chamber member that would like your project to be considered by the team, contact Cyndi Alvarado at (281) 363-8109 or cyndi. alvarado@woodlandschamber.org. The team meets the first Wednesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. at The Chamber. Reach out to Cyndi and ask to be added to the email distribution list for this team.

We invite you to join CRT and learn more about the great things they do.

Leadership Montgomery County Class Hosts:

Serving Our Community Session - Sponsored by Strike, LLC LMC recently hosted its Serving Our Community Session for the Class of 2019, sponsored by Strike, LLC. The session, held at The Ark Church in Conroe and introduced to the LMC program in 2015, is designed to allow class members to learn about needs in the community, the organizations filling those needs, and how they can help as leaders in the community. Session director and LMC Vice Chairman Barry Blanton of Blanton Advisors welcomed the class to the session and gave an overview of the day’s events before kicking off the day with the class Leadership Series facilitated by Chad Patterson and LMC alumni. After the leadership series, Sally Copley of the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County spoke on the history of Montgomery County, before Blanton spoke of the history of The Woodlands. The class spent the rest of the morning participating in a poverty simulation facilitated by LMC Past Chairman Phillip Moore of The Ark Church and LMC Chairman of the Board Melissa Young of Corporate Incentives. More than 20 LMC graduates participated in the simulation with the class. After lunch, Ky Bishop of Strike, LLC spoke to the class about Strike’s community advocacy initiative called Campaign for Change. The class then heard from an agencies panel including Mary Vasquez of United Way of Greater Houston, Jennifer Landers of Community Assistance Center, Missy Herndon of Interfaith of The Woodlands, and Allison Hulett of the Montgomery County Food Bank. Each presenter spoke about their organization and how their organizations work together to benefit the community. An impact panel that included LaToya Carter of Yes to Youth Montgomery County Youth Services, and Chris Follet of Innerfaith Disciple House followed, before class members attended a nonprofit volunteer/ board fair. The nonprofit volunteer/board fair featured more than 25 nonprofits from throughout Montgomery County. Class members were given the opportunity to speak to each nonprofit representative and explore how they could become more involved in the community. “This session is such an important part of the class experience,” said LMC Executive Director Sarah Rhea. “They spend the year learning about many important aspects of the county and growing as leaders. This is a time for them to assess what’s next and find out how they can serve our community with the knowledge and skills they’ve gained from the program.” Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, whose mission is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County. The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber are all partner Chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year. Visit LMCTX.org for more information about Leadership Montgomery County.
