A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE

Shop, eat and give back this holiday season with help from The Woodlands Area Chamber. SHOP At The Chamber, we believe making the holidays merry and bright is in part about supporting local businesses and giving unique gifts that value the community. From secret Santas to significant others, our member companies have your shopping list covered with great products, services, gift cards and more. Visit WoodlandsChamber.org/list and search keywords like “gifts,” “spa” or “jewelry” and you’ll be well on your way to checking off your shopping list while supporting the local retailers that make our community strong.

EAT The Woodlands area offers a multitude of restaurants and fine dining options, but it can be hard to give them all a chance when you’ve already picked your favorites. If you’re ready to try something different in 2020, then you don’t want to miss the 34th annual Taste of the Town on January 16 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. This event is a longstanding community favorite and features more than 40 restaurants, bakeries, breweries, caterers and more, all offering unlimited samples from their menu to compete in the Best of Taste 2

Competition. Learn more about this year’s participating vendors on page 11 and purchase tickets at TasteOfTheTown.org.

GIVE BACK Creating an emphasis on supporting charitable causes is not traditionally a core function for a chamber of commerce. However, given the generosity of spirit that is woven into our community culture, we believe it to be integral to our success as The Woodlands Area Chamber. This holiday season and throughout the year, I encourage you to get involved with The Chamber’s Community Relations Team. CRT is open to all members and is tasked with new projects every month that allow businesses, their employees, and individuals to help make a difference in the community. Projects range from volunteering to soliciting donations and raising awareness. More information on monthly CRT projects can be found at WoodlandsChamber.org/CRT. On behalf of The Woodlands Area Chamber Board of Directors and staff, I wish you and your families a happy holiday season and a new year full of joy and prosperity. I want to thank all of our members for making 2019 a successful and memorable year, and I am thrilled about working with you in 2020 to make The Woodlands area an even greater place for business.

Now Taking Reservations for The Chamber’s 2020 Street Map and Resource Guide The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to once again be working with the cartographic and marketing firm of Target Marketing to publish a new, up-to-date, fullcolor South Montgomery County Area Street Map. This publication will be the only official map endorsed and distributed by The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the publication being a printed, overall guide to our area, the new update will also include a digital version linked from the Chamber’s website. Accurate, user-friendly maps are a popular item for our newcomers, potential commercial relocation candidates and even our lifelong residents. Here are a few more reasons to include your advertisement on the new map. According to ”The New Movers Marketing Potential“ published by relevategroup.com: Over 12% of the U.S. population moves each year, that is 37.1 million people in 15.8 million households n New homeowners spend more within 6 months than the average consumer spends in 3 years n New mover expenditures total more than $150 billion annually n New movers are 5 times more likely to become your long-term customers - if you reach them first n

The Business and Professional Showcase Directory of Members section offers the opportunity to promote your business. This section will classify participating businesses by category, including a brief description of products and/or services. Advertising space on the back cover and a limited number of interior display panel ads are also available. Participating advertisers will receive a complimentary supply of the folded maps with a counter-top display dispenser.

Don’t miss out on the unique members-only opportunity to reach potential buyers, new residents and new partners. Space is limited, and advertising rates are reasonable, especially considering more than 11,000 maps will be printed and available for the next 12 months.

ACT NOW! Email Tyler Shepard at tshepard@chambermaps.com or call Target Marketing at 800-933-3909 to reserve ad space. woodlandschamber.org/map 10

anuary 24 marks the start of the 2020 SCI://TECH, themed Science: It’s Worth Exploring. SCI://TECH is a long-standing partnership between Education for Tomorrow Alliance, Conroe ISD, and private schools to engage students in hands-on STEM education. What started as EfTA finding volunteers for about 100 student science fair projects in the then McCullough High School gymnasium in 1990 has expanded into four weekends, 13 events, and a full day of science fair where volunteers have the chance to judge nearly 1,500 projects. The 30th Annual SCI://TECH kicks off on January 24 with the Private School Science Fair and Senior High Science Bowl, and extends through the Consolidated Communications Junior High Engineering Design Competition on February 22. Community volunteers still play a critical role in supporting SCI://TECH programming, with the greatest need for science fair judges on January 31 at 7:45 am, 9:30 am, and 2:00 pm at the Lone Star Convention Center. Visit efta-us.org/scitech for more information or to register as a volunteer. Community Relations Team

CRT is helping breast cancer patients “Feel Beautiful Again” This month the Community Relations Team partnered with The Breast Cancer Charities of America and iGoPink to collect items for their Feeling Beautiful Again Program. Much like a canned food drive, members collected beauty products instead to provide women going through breast cancer with a beauty bag of HOPE. Included are items that make women smile and feel like a true woman again. A simple touch of lip gloss can make them feel pretty and blush can help brighten the complexion of the illness. These items and others are included in the beauty bags and distributed to hospital partners nationwide.

iGoPink is a national non-profit focusing on educating, empowering and encouraging everyone to become proactive in preventing and surviving breast cancer. Through free program services, patients are educated, taught and given the latest accurate information about integrated cancer care, cancer prevention, recovery, treatment, early detection and survival. This will be the first time since its inception that the organization has had its own building to use effectively serving the expanding needs of the senior population in the county. Pictured is Executive Director Summer Day with City of Conroe Administrator Paul Virgadamo, Jr. Pathway Forensics, a subsidiary of Briggs & Veselka Co., was voted among the best of the best by Texas Lawyer Magazine again this year. The firm has won or placed in the top three in each of their relevant categories since the list’s inception nine years ago. “It’s an honor to be recognized each year as the best in what we do, and we continue to fill that #1 spot in Houston, which means our dedication to the city doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Noel Kersh, Principal at Pathway.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

A local Woodlands favorite, the Interfaith Hand Me Up Shop, is opening its doors to a new location at 536 Sawdust Road. Rob Banzhaf and Zack Wheeler of Newcor Commercial Real Estate represented the Interfaith Hand Me Up Shop, with the lease negotiations of the 22,000-square-foot retail space. The resale shop has been serving the greater Montgomery County community for more than 30 years. All of the proceeds benefit the Interfaith of The Woodlands programs, such as the food pantry, crisis support, and care programs for senior citizens.

Houston-based Briggs & Veselka Co. CPAs and Business Advisors – Houston’s largest locally owned accounting firm and the third-largest locally owned firm in Texas – has been named to the list of Best Places to Work by the Houston Business Journal for the 11th year in a row. The firm was ranked among the top 25 large companies (100-999 employees) and was the only full-service CPA firm recognized in this year’s list.

The Woodlands Resort has been recognized as No.8 Best Resort in the Southwest Texas by 2019 Condé Nast Readers’ Choice Awards, rising 11 spots from 2018 rank. The Resort was also named the No. 5 Best Hotel Pool in the U.S by USA Today 10 Best. “We are honored to be recognized with these awards,” said Gregg Harper, GM. “Our commitment to creating memorable experiences is a top priority for us here at the resort – this is a true testament to our incredible team, and most importantly, to our loyal guests.”

The 2019 Habitat for Humanity Heroes Soiree hosted by Momentum Title was a huge success! Brian Brewer and his team at Momentum Title are passionate about the veteran community and joined forces with Montgomery County Habitat in 2018 to build homes for veterans in need of housing. In the last two years, the event has raised more than enough to build a home for a hard-working veteran family in Montgomery County.

Continuing to invest in their community, Kean Miller The Woodlands recently fielded a team to support the North Houston Association of Professional Landmen’s 7th Annual Sporting Clays Tournament to benefit the professional development of land professionals and raised money for scholarships and donations to several nonprofits. All participants are senior counsel for the Kean Miller Oil and Gas Group in The Woodlands. Interfaith of The Woodlands recently received two grants from Woodforest National Bank’s Woodforest Charitable Foundation. A $10,00 grant will help purchase much needed dental and medical equipment and a $30,000 grant to help fund Interfaith’s many programs and services such as Holiday GIVING and the Food Pantry.

Shop through December 31 at Barnes and Noble and make a donation to Children’s Books on Wheels. On Dec. 12, Children’s Books on Wheels will be wrapping gifts for Christmas at the store.

EDUCATION

Texas Rep. Dr. Tom Oliverson and former Lone Star College Board of Trustees member Dr. David Holsey were recently recognized for their contributions to the LSC lifePATH® program. The program provides a unique opportunity for adult students with cognitive disabilities to learn the social and skill expectations needed in business, academics and personal relationships. Forty-three local K-8 students, representing 70 schools throughout the county, were recognized and awarded cash prizes in a packed courtroom of teachers, school principals, parents and excited siblings on The Dispute Resolution Center’s Conflict Resolution Day for their creative bookmark art with Judge Kathleen Hamilton of the 359th Judicial District Court, Senator Brandon Creighton, and Sir John Olivarri, with the Arabia Shriners. The students demonstrated through their art ways to peacefully resolve conflicts. See the winners at resolutioncenter.org/bookmark.
