A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE

Big News! After 41 years, we’ve released an updated brand identity, which includes a new logo, colors and font. You’ll see the new look anywhere we’re out in public like our website, social media accounts and publications; very soon you’ll see it on all our building signage and swag, as well. We believe the new look better matches what we’ve become since 1978: “The Pathway to Opportunity.” Learn more about the concept behind the design on page 9. Coming up on November 5, voters will be asked whether to approve two Conroe ISD bond proposals that the chamber’s board of directors has endorsed. I encourage all eligible voters in the district to vote on this matter and take advantage of the early voting period, beginning October 21 and ending November 1. Checkout a rundown of the bond referendum and our election activities on page 10.

2

In this issue, we also highlight our 2018-2019 Corporate Partners. Comprised of members that have the ability and desire to invest in the chamber beyond standard membership dues, these companies help us build the strongest, most collaborative and successful business community in the region. Many of the chamber’s accomplishments on behalf of all members would not be possible without the additional support provided by this elite and civic-minded group of businesses. Read about these members on page 12. As always, thank you for reading Business Today. If you have any questions or would like more information about anything you read in here, give us a call at 281-367-5777, email us at info@woodlandschamber.org or stop by our office at 9320 Lakeside Blvd., Suite 200, The Woodlands, TX 77381. We’d love to hear from you!

F E AT U R E

We have a new look! Since our founding in 1978, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce has more or less stuck with the same red and black star logo. But in the last few years we’ve changed quite a lot: we grew our membership to nearly 1,500 companies, making us the largest business association in Greater Houston, beefed up our Business Advocacy Council and launched a Young Professionals Network.

The old look no longer represented our values and the businesses we serve. The star was frequently likened to the insignia of Star Trek’s Starfleet and the color scheme felt a bit heavy for our work. Needless to say, it was time for a change. With input from our members and leadership, a small team inside the chamber worked to create something that better matched who we are today. We hope you like this new look and feel for the chamber! Be on the lookout for member window clings at our events and be sure to add the new logo to your website to display your membership (email lauren.joerg@woodlandschamber.org for the file).

BUSINESS BACKS THE BONDS

A

t more than 348 square miles and serving more than 64,000 students, Conroe Independent School District (CISD) is the largest school district in Montgomery County, the 11th largest school district in Texas and the 65th largest school district in the nation. CISD is home to a total of 64 campuses: • 7 high schools • 3 ninth grade campus • 7 junior high schools • 10 intermediate schools • 3 alternative education centers • 34 elementary schools CISD grows on average by 1,300 to 1,500 students annually. This is more students per year than the entire enrollment of approximately 70 percent of the school districts in Texas.

Here’s what you need to know about the two propositions on the November 5 ballot: Proposition A includes four new elementary schools and one new junior high school in the fastest growing areas of the district. Two new elementary schools are planned for the Caney Creek High School feeder zone. One will provide enrollment relief for Creighton, Austin and Milam Elementary Schools and the other will address the projected growth near San Jacinto Elementary. The Caney Creek feeder zone is also the location of the new junior high school.

The third elementary school, a K-6 campus, will be built in the Conroe High School feeder zone to reduce student To sustain this rapid growth and enrollment at Stewart Elementary, maintain its current facilities – which are Giesinger Elementary and Cryar Interan average of 28 years old – the CISD board of trustees by a vote of 6-0 called a bond mediate. The fourth elementary school election for November 5, 2019. will be in the Grand Oaks High School The district’s voters will see two propositions on the November 5 ballot – one relating feeder zone to relieve crowding at Synder primarily to construction, renovation, safety and security and the other for artificial turf and Broadway Elementary Schools. at the district’s high schools.

10

“Conroe ISD is a vitally important asset for our community in attracting business. When business leaders are determining whether to relocate their operations to The Woodlands area, one of the very first questions they ask is, ‘How are the schools?’” Lapp said. “We have the pleasure of saying, ‘The schools are great.’” Stuart Lapp, Partner, Stibbs & Co., P.C. Attorneys 2018-2019 Chairman of the Board

Several of the district’s older campuses that do not have gymnasiums will receive dedicated P.E. classrooms, giving students at Runyan Elementary, and both Wilkerson and Collins Intermediates, more opportunities to engage in physical activity. Proposition A also includes funds for safety and security enhancements at CISD schools. Projects include upgraded security cameras, required first responder radio signal amplifiers, emergency generators, exterior door sensors and required upgrades to fire alarm systems.

Without these new schools, the district will be forced to rezone students more frequently and across high school feeder zones to campuses that are not experiencing the same level of rapid growth. Proposition A also includes adding general instruction classrooms at College Park High School; career and technical education, engineering and science classrooms at The Woodlands High School; and expanding fine arts and athletic spaces to meet the needs of the increased enrollment at Caney Creek High School. Students in South County will no longer need to travel to Conroe High School to access the district’s only automotive technology program. A facility at Oak Ridge High School will serve as the South County automotive technology center and be a hub for district-level technical and engineering programs. Oak Ridge High School, a 38-year-old building, will also receive improvements to its air conditioning, electrical and plumbing systems.

To transport its growing student population, the district needs more buses. Currently, the district transports over 37,000 students to and from school each day. The average age of the district’s 550-plus bus fleet is an average age of 11.4 years old and 131 buses do not have air conditioning. Proposition A includes funds for more buses that come with seat belts and air conditioning. The district has also run out of space to park its fleet, so funds to expand its Conroe Transportation Center are also included, along with funds for technology infrastructure. Proposition B includes the installation of artificial turf at Oak Ridge, College Park, Conroe, Caney Creek and The Woodlands High Schools. Artificial turf allows the more than 15,000 students participating in athletics, JROTC, band, cheer, P.E. classes and drill team to use fields for their activities on a more consistent basis. To provide these items for our students, the district is asking voters to approve $677.37 million in bond funds – $653.57 million for Proposition A and $23.8 million for Proposition B. If both propositions are approved by CISD voters, it is not anticipated that taxpayers will see a tax rate increase. This is largely due to the growth, current favorable interest rate environment, the district’s ability to refund current bonds at lower interest rates and ongoing reductions of the district’s existing debt. CISD has consistently maintained the lowest school district tax rate in Montgomery County and the second lowest in the greater Houston area. The board of trustees approved the tax rate this year at $1.23 per $100 of assessed valuation, a rate $5 cents lower than last year. CISD continues to be recognized for being a good steward of its taxpayer dollars. The Education Resource Group named CISD the second most productive school district in Texas based on its academic outcomes for students and its financial efficiency for taxpayers. According to Texas Smart Schools, CISD is one of only two of the 1,100plus public school districts in Texas to be recognized with a five-star rating 10 years in a row for high academic achievement while maintaining cost-effective operation. CISD was also named one of the top 200 employers in the state of Texas by Forbes.

York Junior High and the Conroe High School Ninth Grade Campus will receive additions to address current and future capacity issues. York Junior High is currently at 115 percent building capacity. Community Relations Team CRT Contributes

Young Professionals Network

to EfTa Trivia Night; “Helps Kids Make the Grade!”

Soars to New Heights at iFly The Woodlands

The Community Relations Team stayed busy in the month of August with two service projects: Education for Tomorrow Alliance’s Trivia Night and YMCA’s Operation Backpack.

iFLY The Woodlands hosted the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network August social.

Created in 1989 as a project of The Woodlands Area Chamber and local science and technology professionals, EfTA is a nonprofit dedicated to connecting the business and education communities in Montgomery County. With innovative programs focused on career, leadership and STEM education, EfTA has become a portal through which business leaders can access and strengthen local education. The Community Relations Team donated an Astros giftset for the silent auction at EfTA’s Seventh Annual Trivia Night, an evening of brain-busting fun and friendly competition. CRT members went on to collect donations in support of YMCA’s Operation Backpack, a program that provides school supplies for children in the community so that they may start school with the tools they need for a successful year.

More than 40 young professionals gathered to network and escape the ordinary at the indoor skydiving center located at 26860 I-45 North in Oak Ridge. Attendees had the chance to watch several impressive routines conducted by a professional skydiving team and win awesome door prizes gifted by Lakonia Imports, On Stage Hair Design and Butter & Love. To learn more about iFly and its offerings, visit iflyworld.com/ houston-woodlands. Interested in learning about the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network? Contact Margo McZeal, director of government affairs, at 281-363-8106 or margo.mczeal@woodlandschamber.org.
