A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE More than 600 business and community leaders gathered at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott on February 21 to hear national, regional and economic updates at the Chamber’s 34th Annual Economic Outlook Conference. In case you missed it: growth is on the horizon. U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady shared data on the increase of new jobs (including 500,000 new manufacturing jobs), updates to the tax code to encourage companies to stay and conduct business in the United States and lowering regulation costs by $80 billion. Gil Staley, CEO of The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership (EDP), announced that health care is now the largest employment sector in our service area at 26 percent, followed by energy at 22.4 percent and education at 17.8 percent. Staley also shared data on the area’s top major employers, companies with 100 or more employees, stating that in 2010 there were 48 non-retail companies recognized as major employers in The Woodlands area, and in 2020 there are now 80. Attendees also heard an economic update from Jesse Thompson, a senior business economist of the Houston Branch of The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, who cited modest growth ahead in 2020. In line with this year’s conference theme, “Innovative Solutions in a Diverse Economy,” a panel of four executives discussed how 2

the latest trends in innovation are helping businesses to solve economic issues. Panelists included Clint Brinkley, CEO of Your Business Solutions; Ashok Gowda, president and CEO of Biotex, Inc.; Tony Nash, founder and CEO of Complete Intelligence; and Deanea LeFlore, senior director of corporate and community engagement at Ion Houston. Renu Khator, the University of Houston System Chancellor and the University of Houston President, concluded the event with an inspiring keynote presentation about her journey from India to becoming the UH system’s first female chancellor and the first Indian immigrant to head a comprehensive university in the U.S. Ahead of the March primary, the Chamber hosted the 2020 Whistle Stop Tour on February 26. The political event featured a variety of Montgomery County candidates running for office who gave short presentations to attendees about their platforms, allowing many candidates and county residents the opportunity to network and share ideas. As we look forward to the spring months, we have a host of events planned for our members and the community at large, including a Water Forum on March 17, Community Job Fair on April 21, Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 24, and Health, Wellness and Fitness Expo on May 16. Be sure to check our online calendar at woodlandschamber.org/calendar for the latest details.

Things You Should Know

About The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce

1

WE EXIST TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS

The entire point of a chamber of commerce is to further the interests of businesses – to advocate on their behalf and provide needed services and opportunities for growth. We take this definition seriously here in The Woodlands. We want to be your voice, we are eager to help you succeed, and we believe that when you’re successful, our entire community benefits from that success. We’re all about the win-win scenarios.

2

WE HAVE BEEN A PART OF THE COMMUNITY FROM THE START

The Woodlands Area Chamber was established in 1978, just four years after The Woodlands marked its grand opening. Our leaders at that time recognized the importance of having an organization designed to promote and protect the interests of the business community and we continue to believe in this mission today.

3

WE ARE NOT A PART OF THE GOVERNMENT

While we appreciate our political leaders and work closely with them continuously on issues that impact our economy here in Montgomery County, we believe that it is our position as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that allows us to successfully support business interests regardless of who is in office. We work with government officials without regard to their party affiliation and we advocate on behalf of all of our members to propel the best interest of the entire business community.

4

EVERY BUSINESS OWNER IS ELIGIBLE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

For-profit or nonprofit, large or small, in town or out in the country, we welcome all business owners to consider membership in the Chamber. While many may think that joining the Chamber is a thing big businesses do, the truth is that 90 percent of our membership is comprised of small business owners with less than 50 employees.

5

AND, WHEN YOU JOIN, EVERYONE IN YOUR ORGANIZATION BECOMES A MEMBER

That means it is also a great benefit to your employees. They get all the benefits that you do. (Hello, great professional development events!)

6

MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE MEMBER BUSINESSES VIA THE CHAMBER

Because we aren’t just here to hand out member plaques and do ribbon cuttings! We provide our members with multiple ROI opportunities. Access to expert-led courses, networking events, opportunities to gain new skills, meeting space, marketing assistance and promotion, a news outlet devoted entirely to them – these are just a few of the ways you can benefit from your Chamber membership this week alone. You should see what we can do in a month (view our calendar at woodlandschamber.org/calendar).

7

WE CAN HELP YOU STAND OUT

8

BASICALLY, WE’RE YOUR TRIBE

We know that our members are multi-talented. With that in mind, we’ve developed countless opportunities for our members to show off their talents and toot their own horns. From submitting monthly business briefs to event and social media highlights, we want to shine a spotlight on your business. If you’re looking for bigger exposure, you’ll find many opportunities to play a more prominent role by sponsoring and/or hosting events. It is an incredible way to show off what you do and spread brand awareness.

The business climate in The Woodlands area is diverse and unique and we recognize that! We’re continually evolving to address the varied needs of our membership so that we can provide the support, education, guidance and information you truly want and need. From an advocacy council to a young professionals network, infrastructure issues to service projects and resources and everything in between, our volunteer committees work tirelessly to provide our members with the tools they need to succeed.

At the end of the day, our primary goal is to support our members’ businesses in ways that allow them to experience the growth and sustainability they desire. Because when all of our members succeed, all of The Woodlands area succeeds!

Leadership Montgomery County Education in Montgomery County

T

he Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2020 recently explored the vast amount of opportunities for education in Montgomery County at their Education Session.

The class then had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of education through round-tables that included topics such as the juvenile detention education partnership, mental health services, school safety, public school funding/budgeting, school communication, and K-18 schooling options. The day ended with a tour of Grand Oaks High School and a higher education panel including Mike Krall of Lone Star College – Montgomery, Dr. Leah Mulligan of Sam Houston State University, and Dr. Stephen McKernan of SHSU – Conroe.

Young Professionals Network Upgrade Your Networking Game Networking. Some of us hate it, others love it, and if you’re a young professional it’s almost impossible to avoid. Ask not what your contact can do for you, but what you can do for your contact. If you adopt the mindset of helping others, you’ll not only be more fulfilled, but more desirable. Business Insider recommends that you have three qualities: visibility, credibility and profitability. Essentially, do what you want to do and do it well so that you can show it to the people that you want to sell it to. Have an elevator pitch ready. This is an introduction of yourself, your position, your company and your goals with the listener. The idea is if you should meet somebody important in an elevator, you should be able to explain everything that you want them to know before they reach their floor. Have business cards. These are important if you want to stay in touch with people that you make contact with. But keep in mind that these are for the end of the conversation. Only give them to people if you get a good enough vibe that you think they’re going to follow up. Otherwise, it’s just going to end up in a drawer, never to be seen again.

Make good conversation. If you aren’t good at small talk, just ask them questions about themselves. You can even prepare these in advance so that you can have an idea of where you want to steer the conversation. Find somebody in your field that you respect and ask them for some job advice. Remember that you are not asking them for a job, only tips. Follow through. You must prove that you’re dependable, so do whatever you told them you would. Sometimes you will get rejected (it’s not because you’re not the bomb, because you are!).

Transportation Education Council

Mark Keough: Thoroughfare plan is key to managing transportations Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough addressed the Transportation Education Council on February 7, highlighting the area’s mobility needs. Keough said in 2020, the Montgomery County Commissioner’s Court will work to update its thoroughfare plan incorporating mobility studies from other precincts to ultimately provide short, mid and long term recommended improvements, funding options and an implementation process.

About Thoroughfare Planning A thoroughfare plan is a long-range plan (50-plus years) that identifies the location and type of roadway facilities that are needed to meet projected long-term growth within the area. It is not a list of construction projects but rather a tool to enable counties and/or cities to preserve corridors for transportation system development as the need arises. According to the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s website, many of the proposed arterial and collector streets identified in the 2016 Regional Thoroughfare Plan will likely not be needed or constructed within the next 20 or 30 years. However, one of the purposes of the plan is to preserve needed transportation corridors so that as development occurs, counties and/

or cities will have the ability to develop appropriately sized transportation facilities to serve the needs at that time.

About County Judge Mark Keough Mark Keough was elected as the Montgomery County judge in 2018, moving from his previous role as a representative for District 15 in the Texas House of Representatives, which includes The Woodlands. He was elected to the House in 2014. Before entering politics, Keough worked in the automotive industry and as a minister.
