WOODLANDS ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART,

founded in 1858,

is an independent, Catholic, day and boarding, college preparatory school for young women, grades 9–12, who wish to pursue a course of study committed to academic excellence within the context of a faith-based community. As a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States, Woodlands Academy commits itself to educate to:

A PERSONAL AND ACTIVE FAITH IN GOD A DEEP RESPECT FOR INTELLECTUAL VALUES A SOCIAL AWARENESS WHICH IMPELS TO ACTION THE BUILDING OF COMMUNITY AS A CHRISTIAN VALUE PERSONAL GROWTH IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF WISE FREEDOM

A Message from the Leadership “We must respond to so many benefits by a practical gratitude.” —

SAINT MADELEINE SOPHIE BARAT

DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF WOODLANDS ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART, The Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria are the thoughtful articulation of St. Madeleine Sophie’s vision and mission as we are called to live them today. The Goals call us to transcend the ordinary and ask us to strive for the perfect. That is our challenge. We want to live the Sacred Heart mission with the fidelity and integrity that would make our Founding Mother proud. As we embark on another exciting year of Sacred Heart education, we find these Goals and Criteria richly represented in the past year’s many accomplishments. In 2008-2009, Woodlands Academy: Placed the 46 members of the Class of 2009 in 110 colleges of their choice with 52 scholarships totaling more than $525,000. Expanded the Mandarin Chinese curriculum, and introduced Freshman Honors Physics and a Hip Hop/Jazz dance program. Distributed nearly $520,000 to deserving students in the form of financial aid. For the second consecutive year, honored two of our graduating seniors as members of the prestigious Daily Herald Lake County Leadership Team.. Sent a Woodlands Academy faculty and student group to our Network sister school, Gymnasium Sacré Coeur, in Vienna, Austria, and again welcomed our Viennese student and faculty guests for a spring exchange. Honored Wildcat athletes, who finished 2nd in the Independent School League (ISL) in varsity volleyball; participated in ice hockey and crew; earned All State rankings in field hockey and tennis and All-Conference rankings in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, field hockey, and soccer; and swam in IHSA Swimming Sectionals. Celebrated the remarkable achievements of our orchestra, which included an IMEA All-State Honors Orchestra honoree; and Kaleidoscope and Microscope, who qualified for an Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Division I Award, and two “Gold” rankings and two Maestro Awards at the national Heritage Festival choral competition. Your gifts enable us to maintain a competitive edge in our programs while also securing the funds we need to assist families who may, without tuition assistance, be unable to send their daughters to Woodlands. We cannot imagine how many young women may have missed this priceless opportunity if not for your continued support. We thank you for your commitment to our school and to the mission we together hold in sacred trust.

Gerald J. Grossman HEAD OF SCHOOL

Judith B. Castellini CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

I feel very fortunate now to share not only my time and my talent, but also my treasure with Woodlands Academy. — BARBARA WOOD-PRINCE ’54, Board Trustee
