National Careers Week

Science Week

We had a number of school assemblies and events planned for National Careers Week including a presentation to students by Belfour Beatty. They spoke to students about the different paths they could take to work for a multinational company and offered career advice for school leavers.

Sustainable growth was the theme for this year’s British Science Week. Students have been building towers from spaghetti, growing plants from beans and testing out biofuels. The older students witnessed a dissection and genetically transformed bacteria using a jellyfish gene, successfully creating a glow in the dark colony. A presentation and Q&A session with a marine conservationist encouraged discussion about marine sustainability and Year 13 biologists recently took part in the Royal Society of Biology's Olympiad competition.

Netball Nationals Huge congratulations to our U19 Netball Team on their achievement at The National Schools’ Netball Finals two weeks ago. The girls finished 3rd in their group stage and ended the day as joint 5th in the country. This is an amazing achievement and the whole Grove community is very proud of the commitment and hard work shown by these girls.

Crafting with Purpose

A-level Geography Field Trip

Our fantastic boarder Sammi, from Miller house has made some wonderful crochet sunflowers to help those impacted by the situation in Ukraine. An amazing effort during one weekend. This will be supported by a whole school non-uniform day.

Some of our boarders were involved in the Year 12 A-level Geography field trip to the North Yorkshire coast this term. Part of the trip was exploring the coastal landforms of Flamborough Head. They had a day full on sunshine to visit this beautiful coastline.

Strength in Siblings More kindness and generosity from some of our sixth formers, who organised a charity rock concert in the Grove Theatre to raise money for the ‘Strength in Siblings’ project.

This project is dedicated to supporting and celebrating the amazing siblings of disabled children who are often overlooked when it comes to accessing support to help them tackle the many challenges they often face.

Junior High School Musical

Day Trip to Whitby

Our senior boarders have been involved behind the scenes with the technical production of our junior show, High School Musical. They supported Year 7 and Year 8 for what was a very lively show with catchy songs, that we will probably be singing for weeks!

A Great day out in Whitby on the Yorkshire east coast for our boarders. Fish and Chips, browsing in the town and a visit to Whitby Abbey. Lots of joy and laughter after a very busy week for our boarders.

Rosslyn Park National Rugby 7s Congratulations to our boarders Harry and Seb playing for the first VII at Rosslyn Park National Schools Rugby Sevens. Harry had been injured for much of the 15 a side season so it was great for him to play in this prestigious tournament. He was one of the outstanding performers, scoring a couple of tries and contributing to the team as a strong ball carrier and tackler.

Senior House Chess Competition

Year 8 boarder, Adam Hussain, was presented with his Grove Award badge and certificate by the Headmaster. To gain the award he had to undertake five challenges; these included co-curricular rugby, exchanging letters with a pen friend in Urdu, earning 17 house points and being a House Prefect and a Form Prefect as well as his work on boarding wellbeing and the school diversity group. Well done Adam.

Senior House chess was a tense affair this half term with boarders and day pupils pitting their wits against each other looking to secure points for their House.

Congratulations to Stephenson who were crowned Senior House Chess Champions.

Earth Hour

Girls Football at the Nationals These U15 girls, including boarders Gaelle and Paola, have made history by becoming the first girls football team from the Grove to play in a National Cup game. It was a fierce competition, but they played extremely well and worked hard as a team.

Already this term we have had a growing number of girls’ football fixtures at both U13 and U15 age groups and look forward to a growing representation in this sport.

On Saturday Rev Atkins and Miller House boarders participated in Earth Hour. From 8.30 to 9.30pm they turned off all non essential electric lights, as a symbol of commitment to the planet and spent the hour watching David Attenborough's 'A life on our planet'. The girls were very moved by the documentary and it inspired a whole conversation about personal impact on the planet and social responsibility.
