from the publisher A Holiday Miracle Hello and welcome to the December issue of Eydis Authentic Living magazine, I am so happy you are here. I love this time of year, the hustle, and bustle of shopping, family celebrations, the joy of giving; it’s a glorious time for sure. No matter what your religion or spiritual practices are, I’d like to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday.

For those of you who know me, know that I am a very spiritual person.

I have a strong faith in God, the universe, a higher power. I believe that through awareness we are all guided and as long as we are open to receiving, signs will always show up for us.

I was talking to my dear friend, Lisa Marie, and told her of a story; an experience I had just witnessed days earlier. When I finished, she asked if I was going to write about it. I thought for a moment and took it as a sign that I should share with all of you.

A couple of evenings ago, I snapped a photo of the work that I had done earlier that day in taking down a huge vine from the deck.

As I took the picture, I stood there looking at it and in the lower right corner of the photo, a shiny image caught my eye. I quickly looked up from the photo and onto the deck to see what it was, but nothing was there. In making the photo larger, it became clear to me that I had captured something magnificent!

Something that appeared to looked like a translucent angel wing.

A Nature Spirit? I had heard of them before being captured in photos but had never seen one. What a cool thing. In doing some research, it is my understanding that they tend to be translucent and if you are lucky enough to capture one in a photo, you will only see a part of its body, which would explain what looked like a translucent wing.

True holiday miracles happening all the time, and this year I was given the gift of one, an angel wing. And although I am unsure of its meaning, I am sure it was meant to be shared this holiday season.

ebra Poneman is a best-selling author, the founder of “Yes to Success” seminars and the co-founder of “Your Year of Miracles,” a mentoring program for women.

Debra began transforming lives in the 1970’s when she studied with the greatest spiritual masters of the east and taught meditation to thousands. Since then, she’s shared her teachings on how to create outer success on the basis of inner silence around the world helping tens of thousands of people to create lives they love.

SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

I had the pleasure of meeting Debra at a seminar I attended and we instantly connected on a soul level. This contagiously witty, kind and brilliant aura of white light and love embraces every aspect of her life and allows others to follow in her “judgment free” Miracle Zone.

Debra belonged to a club that was formed in her grade school called the Cleftos. If you belonged to this club, you were considered to be one of the “cool” girls.

Debra’s life growing up was surrounded by the energy of her loving family and friends.

Always kind to others, it was no wonder that she was one of the “popular” ones. But as life lessons would have it, she quickly learned that the title came with incredible responsibility.

At the age of 13, and in eighth grade, Debra had a powerful “awakening” experience. The lesson of that experience would mold the rest of her life.

“There was an unwritten rule that to be a ‘cool’ girl in school,

you had to be exclusive and not mingle with the ‘uncool’ ones.

Sometimes I even saw what we would now call bullying,” Debra shared.

That code of conduct never resonated with Debra, but she says although she didn’t perpetuate it, she never interrupted it.

“One day I remember being on the playground sitting at a picnic table where all the cool girls hung out,” Debra explained. “Two of the girls in the club walked toward us with a girl that was not a part of the group. They said to her, ‘We have good news. We want you to be a Clefto!’ I remember that girl’s eyes lite up as though her dreams were coming true. I could literally see the joy oozing from her as she thought she eydisauthenticliving.com 21

was being accepted into this world of coolness. As this joy was spilling out, the two girls laughed and said, ‘We’re just kidding! We would never have you in our club.’’

Debra vividly remembers the look on the girl’s face as her complete joy turned into intense pain and how excruciating it was for her to witness it. That was when Debra had what she now describes as a spiritual awakening.

“I actually saw that the moment this girl contracted in pain, that pain radiated from her body. I actually saw the entire planet, beginning with the playground, become a hologram and I saw how her pain affected every corner of creation,” Debra shared.

“What I also experienced was that the greatest part of this pain bounced back and went into the bodies of the two girls who perpetrated the incident. I 22 | Eydis Magazine

saw it lodge itself as a darkness in their subtle physiologies that would affect them over and over throughout their lives.”

In that moment Debra realized that each person’s pain was all of our pain—that there wasn’t a molecule on the planet that wasn’t affected.

I love the quote from Mahatma Gandhi who said, “If you can’t see God in the next person you meet, you need look no further.’”

DEBRA’S JOURNEY

It was at that moment that Debra made a promise to herself, that she would never consciously cause another living being pain and makes every effort to continue that practice day.

At the age of 18, Debra began her formal spiritual journey studying at the feet of some of the greatest spiritual masters in the world. She would spend months on end in deep meditation for up to 12 hours a day, often in silence for weeks at a time.

“One thing I try to live by is to remember that the most important person in the world is the person standing in front of you at any given moment, and the most important thing you can do for your success is to treat everybody as the most important person in the world, because to them, they are. We are each the most important people in our own worlds and

Some may ask … why would one do that? The answer Debra gave was simple; “We were told that our deep meditation and silence was a counterbalance to the chaos and violence on the planet at the time. We were making our contribution to world peace. I was also deeply committed to my own selfrealization and that was the path I chose.”

Debra shares, “People often feel helpless when they see some of the horrible things that are going on in the world. But the truth is, each person can make a difference. I love the teaching of the great Kabbalist, Rabbi Ashlag and the simple analogy he gives to show how each individual can have a tremendous impact on the entire world.”

One day, the Rabbi put a balance scale on the table and he told his students to place equal amounts of sesame seeds on each side of the scale. He then said, “The seeds on one side of the scale represent the pain, the darkness, the suffering, the cruelty, the unhappiness in the world.

When we add to that, we bring the planet closer to an age of destruction.

The seeds on the other side represent joy, light, happiness, kindness, love, good. When we add to that, we bring the planet closer to a golden age, an Age of Enlightenment.

He then said, “We are at a very precarious time in the history of

creation, where there is a great battle going on between good and evil. If there are equal amounts of seeds on both sides, how many seeds would it take to tip the scales one way or the other? The answer is one. How do you know that that one act of hurt or that one act of love that you perform isn’t the act that tips the scales one way or the other? You are more powerful than you can imagine.”

In 1980 Debra was introduced to the energetic concepts like the “Law of Attraction” that have now been made popular by the book and film The Secret. When Debra was first introduced to this body of knowledge, it resonated so powerfully that she knew that it was what she wanted to teach for the rest of her life.

In 1981 Debra founded Yes to Success Seminars and became a pioneer in the “New Thought” movement. She began giving seminars based on “radical” ideas like everything is energy and your thoughts create your reality. It didn’t take long before her seminars were established in cities across the US and in seven countries on four continents. She also went on to have the first infomercial in the history of infomercials to offer a self-improvement product.

One tenant of Debra’s teaching is that if an idea comes to you, it comes to you because it wants to be manifested through you. That’s why we all have different ideas. You have the ideas that you have the ability to manifest. One of Debra’s favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson who says, “There is nothing capricious in Nature. The implanting of a desire indicates

She was a trainer for major corporations like MacDonnell Douglas, Mattel Toys, and the Xerox Management Group at a time when there were virtually no women doing training in the corporate sector. Among her students were those who went on to become mega-successful entrepreneurs, NY Times bestselling authors, millionaires, billionaires and renowned luminaries like Marci Shimoff, Janet Attwood, Steve Farber and Phil Town. Even Deepak Chopra attended Debra’s seminars numerous times.

that its gratification is in the constitution of the creature who feels it.” In other words, Nature doesn’t trick you and give you desires without giving you the ability to fulfill them!

A great example that Debra gives is through this statement, “God has no hands but yours.”

can’t come down and open a gluten free bakery on-line so the Creator chooses a worthy vessel and gives you the idea but if you don’t act on it, that idea is going to have to go to someone who will.

I would just say that I didn’t give up anything. Not only did I love being a mom but I knew that each of us was put here for a purpose and if my purpose is to teach people energetic laws

Debra said that the decades she spent being home with her two biological children and the many others who called her mom and lived at the Poneman home for days, months or even years, were deeply fulfilling.

But time marches on and Debra’s former students who had now gone on to become icons in the world of transformational leadership were urging her to return to that world that she’d left twenty-one years before.

There are people who came on this earth to hear the message from you. There are people who incarnated for you to be their teacher. And they are waiting for you.”

YOUR YEAR OF MIRACLES

Three years ago, Debra received an excited call from Marci Shimoff. Marci, who was Debra’s secretary when she founded Yes to Success and went on to be a featured teacher in the Secret and a multiple time #1 NY Times bestselling author (while, Debra says, “I was at Chuckie Cheese”) had an idea.

Debra shared, “Two of my closest friends, Marci Shimoff and Janet Attwood kept saying to me, ‘When are you going to stop pretending that your kids still need you and start speaking again?’ The truth is, there are a lot of great people who were raised by parents who Debra Poneman and Marci Shimoff worked outside the home or by grandparents or foster parents.

So I don’t know if my kids ever really needed. But I do know that I needed them.

Because to me, one, ‘I love you, Mommy, you’re the best mom in the whole world,’ is worth more to me than a thousand standing ovations. But I

Marci told Debra that she was personally mentoring a handful of high-end clients on how to create miraculous lives. She said that although over a thousand women had applied for her mentorship program, because of its one-on-one structure, she could only accept eight.

Marci realized that what she wanted to do was offer a program that had less personalized attention but where she could still teach her formula for miracles. She said that she thought to herself, “Who do I know who also lives a life filled with the miraculous, is a fabulous teacher and who I would love to launch this program with?”

Marci said there was only one person who fit the bill and together she and Debra created Your Year of Miracles (YOM), a group-mentoring program for women who are ready to create

miraculous lives for themselves.

They created a price structure so that the program was so affordable that anyone who was ready could join them and learn their formula for creating miracles beyond their wildest dreams.

“We created a year-long program because we saw what happens when people go to weekend programs or even week or month-long programs, Debra shares. They get hyped up but there are not a lot of long-lasting effects. What we’ve seen in the three years that women have been in YOM is that their lives really change, powerfully and permanently.

“Over 4000 women have participated in our program and we’ve seen everything from women in their sixties finding their soul mates for the first time; women with a lifetime of money struggles becoming financially abundant; women leaving careers to 26 | Eydis Magazine

pursue their non-profit dreams and ending up making more money than they did before.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve seen miraculous healings of chronic conditions and miraculous healings of relationships – even somewhere the rift occurred decades ago.

“One woman who was at our retreat said to me, ‘This has been the greatest year I’ve ever had. I lost my job, divorced my husband and had to move out the home I’ve been living in for twenty-five years and I’ve never been happier in my life.’ The tools we shared and the support of the community allowed her to let go of what wasn’t serving her highest good and to create a space for something better to come in. And I’d need all day to tell you all the miracles that are now happening in her life. What better can you ask for than that?

“And honestly,” Debra added, “I think what our participants love

the most is the life-long friends they make in our community, and that they finally start deeply loving and accepting themselves.

It really is miraculous.”

INSPIRING WORDS

Many people ask Debra if they’ll find their life’s purpose if they join her YOM program.

She says that we all have a lot of life’s purposes—that there is a time for every purpose under heaven. But when we think our real purpose is external, we may never find it. Our real life’s purpose is to develop the unshakable inner peace and contentment that never leaves us no matter what’s happening in our external world—the contentment that’s there whether our book soars to #1 or never moves past #100,000.

Debra believes that people are too obsessed these days with finding their “PURPOSE” like it’s some holy grail. What if your purpose, the reason you’re here,

is to go out and give love each day or to get out of bed and grab every opportunity to do a random act of kindness? Or, instead of feeling like a loser because you’re not playing piano in Carnegie Hall, why not use your God-given music talent and bring joy to the residents of a retirement home?

If you can’t play baseball with the NY Yankees but you love baseball, do what my friend Dean did, he founded a buddy baseball league where young people are paired with kids with special needs and they play baseball each Sunday together in the summer. What if your purpose is to just see God in every person you meet?

And here’s the miracle: Do that, and you’ll probably end up playing in Carnegie.

When you ask for something with all your heart, you’ll get one of only three answers… .”Yes;” “Not now;” or “I love you too much to give that to you—there’s something better on the way.”

Debra reminds us that you’re not capable of having a desire that you’re not capable of fulfilling. Just don’t push.

Instead, surrender and trust that all will unfold exactly as it’s supposed to in perfect timing. That doesn’t mean you don’t take action. Quite to the contrary, as you can’t steer a parked car.

And don’t forget to have gratitude for what you already have now. That’s the way to create an opening for your heart’s desires to find their way to you. And yes, there are some things you think you want that you won’t get. Just remember we live in a benevolent universe where everything happens in our favor.

It’s too easy to try to fill oneself with material goods when one is really seeking spiritual or personal fulfillment.

So we ask you now to search deeply and answer the question that is really on your mind: “What do I really want?”

To do this, access the right hemisphere of your brain. This is your creative aspect.

• Use different types of art media to draw or create.

• Create or play music, or dance to the representations of your feelings.

• Is it fulfillment?

• Disconnect your left-brain analyzing-mind with activities like yoga or tai chi.

• Is it gratitude?

• Meditate or pray.

• Is what I am seeking actually what I want to be giving?

Strive to look beyond the surface-meaning of the thing that you believe you want.

Avoid evaluating with your head when you can be listening through your heart and soul.

You may find direction to your answer by identifying how you think you will feel if you achieve

If you are not yet skilled in the technique of channeling, you can allow yourself to write whatever comes to mind, even if it seems unrelated, silly, or ridiculous at first. This can be done with pen and paper, but it is also helpful

he mere thought of getting in front of a camera for a video shoot gets me weak in my knees.

What’s interesting about this is I’m the person who often speaks about the importance of stepping

into leadership, living out your big mission you know, the one that only your closest friends know about - and how the world is made for those who stand out, not fit in.

While I’ve spoken on platforms on several continents and numerous stages with my message reaching hundreds of thousands of people, video has always felt different to me.

Yet, being on video makes me feel incredibly vulnerable.

When I am speaking on stage, it’s once and done.

I’m stuck reliving my mistakes over and over and over again.

When I look back at the videos that were taken of my years ago when I opened the doors to Upside Thinking, Inc., I cringe and say aloud just about every time, “What were you thinking? ?” lease don’t run to google to look for those videos.

And, if you do, be kind.

It’s not that I go looking for them, the videos simply have a way of finding me. There’s nothing quite like an old high school connection that you were never very close to reaching out to you out of the blue to let you know that they’ve seen your disastrous video from a decade ago .. utting yourself out there in video or any format opens you up to being judged.

As I desire to speak loudly and proudly about who I am and who I am not, I am clear that this is one of the main reasons that producing videos has been a knuckle-clenching struggle for me, despite countless coaches and mentors insisting that this needs to be part of every leadership coach’s repertoire.

The audience gets to take in my message in the moment.

All that remains is the memory of what I said and how they felt at the end of my presentation.

And, I get the memory of having

delightful conversations that made my heart smile, as usually, the only people who wait in line to talk to me were people who found value from my keynote.

With video, however, the message lasts f-o-r-e-v-e-r

So, really, this isn’t about video at all it’s about whether you’ve been hiding out and what you can do to step out of the shadows.

It’s impossible to lead your mission and design your destiny if you’re being pulled in multiple directions.

You “should” spend more time on social media to increase your sphere of in uence.

You “should” have partners and sponsors at work who promote you and your great work.

You “should” be producing videos, writing white papers or your own book to get media attention to make a name for yourself. ots of con icting messages from different gurus will actually 48 | Eydis Magazine

And, while each of these may have some merit, if you don’t stick to what you do best and network the rest, you’ll also be unfulfilled. If you’re ready to step out of the shadows and into the light, here are four ways you can ensure you take action on what matters most. now who you are - and who you are not. egardless of what others are doing or the results they are getting, if you follow their lead and it isn’t in alignment with who you are, you will find yourself in an incredibly unhappy place. or e ample, if you spend countless hours marketing yourself online by writing articles, and blog posts and you’re your genius is speaking to groups or

sharing your wisdom through video, every time you sit down a little part of you will shrivel up inside and you’ll probably spend a lot of time procrastinating.

Use your strengths now where you’re going. When my husband plans a vacation for the two of us, he always has a specific country in mind.

After choosing the destination, he has a checklist he follows to ensure we have a first-class e perience.

If you don’t know where you’re headed to in your professional and personal life, it’s a lot like taking a trip without a destination in mind.

Sure, you may end up somewhere but it could take a lot more energy.

When you have a specific location, you avoid the overwhelm and uncertainty and even have something to be e cited about during the highs and lows of the journey.

If you have no idea where you are going, how do you know where to start? now why what you do matters.

You’re big why enables you to be laser-focused on what actions to take.

When you e pend time thinking about what you should be doing or working on each day, you squander energy that could be used to live out your big mission.

When you are clear about your big why you don’t waste time, you invest it.

Create margin in your schedule. ven if you’re not claustrophobic, overcrowded elevators aren’t fun to be in. Actually, any place where you aren’t free to move limits what is possible. The same is true with you as you move about your day.

A calendar that is overfull, bursting at the seams, doesn’t allow for creativity and new opportunities to ow freely amine where you may be hiding out and implement one of the four ways to take action on what matters most. eadership is a relationship. eople follow the person first then their great plan.

ll of us, regardless of our background or culture, e perience a number of transitions throughout our lives. They may be a change in a relationship, career, home, or in our health. We can choose to embrace and learn from these transitions, or to resist them.

William Bridges in his book Transitions: Making Sense of ife’s Changes differentiates between a change and a transition. He views change as e ternal and situational, such as moving to a new city or becoming a parent.

He sees a transition as the internal work we do to reorient and redefine ourselves and incorporate e ternal changes into our lives. ife e perience and research show that if we don’t do the internal transition work, we will keep repeating the same patterns in our lives. or e ample, a man or woman who marries times and keeps choosing similar partners and revisiting the same issues, never resolving them and remaining unhappy, because they haven’t taken the time to get clear on who they are, and what they want in their lives.

So how can you embrace and learn from life transitions?

Bridges, based on years of research, has identified phases people go through regardless of the type of transition they are e periencing: an ending a neutral zone and a new beginning. ach phase has work associated with it to help us embrace and learn from the transition, and evolve.

An ending is the end of a relationship, job, or career.

The “work” associated with this phase is letting go and celebrating the positive aspects and lessons learned from it.

A personal e ample is a recent move I made with my partner from the interior of British Columbia living in the dream home we purchased years ago, to a city on ancouver Island where we know hardly anyone. We moved because my partner was headhunted and offered a position that was too good to turn down. We decided to sell our -bedroom home and downsize to a -bedroom apartment. It’s been a huge adjustment, more than I could have imagined, as I’ve moved many times. eydisauthenticliving.com 51

It took a few weeks after we decided to put our house on the market for me to “let go” of the house and realize that “home” is where my heart is, and I can make a new home anywhere I choose. I released and let go of a lot of furniture, clothing, jewelry and possessions. The process enabled me to give to people who didn’t have a lot and to e perience the joy of giving. I’m now in the process of celebrating that I no longer have a lawn to mow, a garden to “put to bed” or a driveway to shovel.

I am celebrating the “lightness”, freedom and joy I feel from not having so much “stuff” and surrounding myself with carefully chosen possessions that bring me joy.

Initially, I e perienced much e citement and joy at the adventure of living in a new city and creating a new home.

I found a yoga studio about minutes walk away and started cycling, which I hadn’t done in years. I walked and cycled everywhere. However, after about weeks things began to change. When we sold our house and our furniture arrived we lived in chaos for a time.

There was so much “stuff” and nowhere to put it all. I had to make some decisions to let go of things I initially thought would fit. I became easily angered and felt “hemmed in” by the small space. I became upset with the quality of workmanship of our recently renovated apartment it was certainly nowhere near what I was used to. After looking around for another place to rent, I realized our view and location is amazing compared to what is available in this low-vacancy market. So I made the choice to “suck it up” and make our apartment a home that I would enjoy living in. I started to think about all I am grateful for and appreciate in our new place.

I’m now feeling ready to move on to the ne t phase of the transition journey.

Dreams you have, seem to keep eluding you each time you try to reach out for them.

The person you thought would always be there for you or simply love you the way you hoped to be loved, just isn’t showing up in that way. The job you thought you wanted doesn’t hold the joy you thought it would. verything and every person around you just doesn’t seem to hold the magic you were hoping for.

So what do you do? Do you throw in the towel? Do you concede to the idea that maybe you’re just not meant to be happy and your life is not meant to be blessed like other people’s lives are? Do you start questioning your purpose in this world and start believing that perhaps you’re not worthy of having the life you desire?

Maybe you’re finally at the point where it just seems easier to stop challenging yourself, lie down and let life have its way with you.

In that service, you will find your joy and ultimately start seeing who you really are. I’m encouraging you to take a closer look at why you are choosing a particular path, whatever path that may be, and decide if it’s really about your love for it or for what you feel you will gain from it.

DISILLUSIONED This might sound harsh, but you might actually be deluding yourself as to what you truly want. The job you think you need in order to be happy might only be your desire because you mistakingly think it will fill some unfulfilled part of you. o job, person or material possession will ever occupy that empty space within you.

That space is longing for a deeper connection with you.

give rather than what it is you want to take. You have to dig deep and figure out what lies beneath the surface of your desires. Maybe the reason you want that “in the spotlight” job is because you really want to feel loved. erhaps you never felt seen as a child and this is your chance to show up and off for the world. This is your chance for all the world to never ignore you again because your face is right in theirs. And while you might achieve those accolades, the truth is, they won’t last or after awhile, they won’t even

So, the object of your affection just isn’t everything you had hoped for. You worked and waited so hard to be in a relationship and suddenly you find yourself still not happy.

Maybe you knew all along that this wasn’t the right person but you also knew that they had some great qualities and maybe, just maybe, you could make it work. Maybe they fed a certain part of you that felt unsatiated. Temporarily, they will feed you but you will still find yourself yearning for more. You see, when you stop e pecting others to be a

certain way and you just allow them to show up as they are, then you will really know love and a beautiful relationship will be born and ourish. Anything in between that just isn’t real.

It’s not fair, it’s not honest and it’s not love. That doesn’t mean that it won’t work out, but it might be a rockier road while the two of you try to navigate your way through it. ove ows. Sure, there are naturally some bumps along the way, but not because either of you are placing those obstacles there. ife can be challenging at times but we don’t have to make it more challenging because we are not showing up as ourselves or because we aren’t letting someone else. Something to really think about: If you find yourself unhappier in a relationship than being alone, it’s time to pack up those bags and hit the road. Scary? Sure, but not any scarier than staying somewhere where you’re feeling more alone than if you were actually alone.

SO NOW W AT o matter where you are in your life and what challenges you might be facing, you can get through them. You do not have to roll over and let them keep compounding until you finally have a breakdown.

Here are some things to think about to help you figure out if where you are is where you want to be.

Take stock of what is going on in your life and really look at you.

Take a look around and figure out if everything and everyone that is present in your life is really aiding you along your journey or hindering you.

hen I was growing up, it was always stressful and frustrating for me to figure out what kind of birthday or Christmas gift to get

for my mother. It seemed that no matter what I picked out, it didn’t make her happy. As I got older, I noticed that she reacted the same way to gifts from my

dad. Mom always complained about the color, the style, the size, the use or purpose of the item, or some other feature that dissatisfied her. I remember

many trips to the store to return or e change whatever it was she had been given. In fact, a common phrase for her to say when she opened a gift was

“What did you get that for?”.

You may have someone in your life like this. Hopefully not to this e treme, but you get the picture. When you freely offer eydisauthenticliving.com 65

them a gift or a compliment with warmth and sincerity, what you feel in return is a form of resistance. It may be strong or mild, but it feels like a block against the energy of giving you are offering. They may say something like “you shouldn’t have” or “anyone could’ve done that job as well”. But how it impacts you isn’t just the words that they say, it is the energy behind the words. You know the difference between how it feels to you when someone is genuinely open to accepting a gift or compliment from you, and when someone resists.

How do you feel when someone resists a gift or compliment from you? I feel dissatisfied. When I

offer a gift or compliment, it is an e pression of appreciation and or care for that person. When they de ect that energy from me, I feel incomplete in my process of giving. The act of delivering the gift or complement has been completed, but the energetic e change between us still feels incomplete.

The reason for this feeling of being incomplete in my giving brings me to the main point for this story. This is also often a key lesson for clients to who want to reduce stress and strengthen their resilience skills. Here it is. Giving and receiving are not separate things. They are two halves of one whole. It is like breathing in, and breathing out. You must do

both to have a complete cycle of breath. You can’t only breathe out or only breathe in, even when you try very hard. You end up gasping for air in either case. or an act of giving to be complete and satisfying, there must be someone on the other end willing and open to authentically receive what you have offered. Therefore, one of the very best gifts you have to give is to graciously and authentically receive what has been offered to you.

You can’t change how someone else responds. But you can pay attention to your own reactions.

What is your automatic feeling when someone presents you with a gift or compliment? n the outside, you may have

complete composure and offer a warm and polite thank you. But I am asking you to look at what happens on the inside. How do you feel? Are you simply e cited or delighted as well as maybe honored and grateful? r is there a resistance, either mild or strong, that rises within you? If so, at some level your receiving channels are not fully open. The bad news is - chances are good that the giver senses it. The good news is - you can alter this automatic response.

Here are three tips to help you e pand your receiving channels. otice Your esistance - If you are uncomfortable when a compliment or gift is offered, then notice and acknowledge to yourself that you have some resistance. It is much easier to clean up and change a habit when you are aware of it. Don’t beat yourself up for having the resistance. Bringing it to conscious awareness turns it from a negative to a positive. ow you can actively work on making a shift to be more open to receiving. Also, notice if there is a difference in your resistance when you are in a professional versus a personal situation or relationship. Maybe you can accept compliments from your family more easily than from your coworkers, or vice versa. erhaps it is easier for you to receive from women than from men. Is there a particular person or situation that magnifies your resistance? otice if you have a particular pattern or

threshold where your resistance kicks in. or e ample, homemade gifts are just fine with you but purchased or more e pensive gifts make you uncomfortable. ust notice. These patterns are clues to where you might need some deeper work with a coach to clean up some limiting beliefs that no longer serve you.

Adjust Your Behavior - If your resistance is a pattern, then it may take some “fake it till you make it” behavior changes to break that pattern. If you find yourself looking away or de ecting the compliment or gift as somehow not necessary or underserved, adjust those actions. If you are babbling about why you don’t deserve it, take a breath and stop. Make an effort to look in the eyes of the person, and simply say thank you with the most sincerity that you can muster. The more you do this, the easier it will

become, and the more genuine it will feel. ventually, you will be able to connect to and receive the energy of appreciation and acknowledgment being offered to you. emember, that connection is what makes the giver’s e perience complete. eview and einforce - To accelerate your shift, take some time at the end of the day and review any e periences where your resistance to receiving popped up. ook back, and acknowledge yourself for any adjustments in your behavior that you were able to make, even if you judge them as clumsy or imperfect. The simple fact that you were able to notice your pattern and make an adjustment is an accomplishment to celebrate. Allow yourself to connect once again to the feeling of appreciation and acknowledgment that was offered to you. In many cases, eydisauthenticliving.com 67

thank you notes or a te t or phone call are the perfect opportunity to do this review, as well as to e press your gratitude.

Becoming more and more comfortable with receiving can produce some surprising benefits. If you are an entrepreneur, perhaps there is a ceiling on your earning level ceiling that you can’t push past. As you clean up your receiving channels, the ow of money and opportunities can also e pand. If you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or underappreciated at home or work, as you e pand your receiving channels you may find that you are better able to ask for, recognize, and accept support. As your ability to receive e pands, you will likely notice that what you want and need crosses your path with more abundance and ease.

An advanced moved to opening your receiving channels is to pay attention to a relationship where your gifts are continually resisted. It took me many years to understand what was going on with my mother and her resistance to gifts from me and Dad. Having a family of my own opened my eyes to a more natural and joyful pattern of ow and balance between giving and receiving. I accepted the fact that I could not change my mother or her resistance reactions to offers of gifts, help, compliments, and almost any form of kindness. She certainly 68 | Eydis Magazine

had her own life journey and set of e periences that had brought her to that place.

It wasn’t that gifts from Dad and I weren’t good enough. It turned out to be just the opposite.

Generosity overwhelmed her, and not in a good way. To use a sports analogy, we were asking someone who was ine perienced at baseball and did not have a mitt, to catch a mile an hour fastball. She didn’t like it and wasn’t good at it. I finally decided to try some gentle tosses in place of the fastball.

What I noticed was that Mom’s discomfort was less when I gave her small, ine pensive yes even cheap or tacky , practical items.

It became clear to me that she could tolerate receiving at that level and even started to enjoy it.

So, I got her little practical things for her birthday or Christmas or Mother’s Day, and she began to be able to say thank you and not reject them automatically. I would also throw in one “nicer” gift just to test the waters. I finally found the balance that works for both of us. We never had a conversation about it, and I doubt that she even noticed the changes I was making. What I do know is that she is no longer felt confronted and completely resistant when I offered her something. She learned to stretch her ability to receive, and I was able to feel complete in my giving well , most of the time .

The month of December is a

perfect opportunity to practice the gift of receiving. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, wanzaa, or maybe a few birthdays like my family, there is an abundance of opportunities for giving and receiving. So, double your joy this season and into the ew Year. Give as you wish, and pay attention to the receiving tolerance levels of those who resist. To keep things in balance like breathing in and breathing out , remember to practice opening your receiving channels to the appreciation, love, and acknowledgment that comes your way. ust remember, one of the best gifts you have to give is to genuinely receive the gifts and compliments that are offered to you.

Dear Liberty, I don t like talking about my feelings. I m always afraid people will think I m silly or stupid.

It s not so bad in situations where it doesn t really matter if I say anything like in a group or at a party where other people are doing all the talking. I can usually get away without saying much and people just think I m uiet.

but I m afraid to say anything, especially if I think it s going to make somebody mad or maybe someone will be upset with me.

It s causing a problem now because, in some of my closer relationships, people say I m putting up a wall or they think I m mad at them for something, which isn t the case. At least, not most of the time. I feel like I m damned if I do and damned if I don t If I say anything, people will be mad at me, but if I stay uiet, they re mad at me anyway. to certain people and their situations no doubt there are others that you ust can t figure out no matter how hard you try. At the end of the day all of us are essentially the same. All of us feel fear hurt anger and embarrassment as easily as we feel love oy and happiness.

When you hold yourself bac from others and don t let them see the truth of who you are you don t let yourself see it either. etter to come from a place of having faith and con dence in yourself for being who you re meant to be and bravely letting the world see who that is. y allowing yourself to be vulnerable and authentic you will connect with the world in a much more deep and meaningful way.

Dear Traveler,

I was traveling and had gotten into a vehicle with some other people. It was open and we were standing up. This dream was strange since the environment did not seem real--it looked more like a picture or cartoon, but very modern in style. I felt like an observer until the end of the dream. We began riding and I was concerned that we were going in the wrong direction, but someone said it was ok. I could see the top of what looked like the Empire State building in the background and knew we were supposed to be traveling away from it. Then we came to a canal. It was cement with water that did not look deep. People were racing in it.

I got in with some other people and started to swim. Seems like we had gone a long distance and I was getting concerned. We turned to go back. At some point, some people left the water and walked toward a building. It looked like we were in the desert and there was sand. They said they were going to a talent contest. I said I was not going because I didn’t have talent. Some of the people decided to walk rather than swim. I thought swimming would be faster so I continued. We were still in this cement canal that was not very wide or deep. When we got to the end I was on the floor in some kind of building. I was looking at mail and tearing up and didn’t want anyone to be able to get my name and address. I tore out one section that had some notes of mine written in pencil. I looked at people leaving and a lady checked the card of a lady leaving. It was the plastic type credit card you get at casinos. I checked to see if I had one and there was one in my shirt pocket. I got up to go out and showed it to the lady and she said it was okay, there was no balance owed to me.

You are heading in a particular direction in life that is different and unique than the way you normally head toward a destination or goal.

You are now able to be more objective and be the observer of your actions. However, you recognize that you are heading in the wrong direction. You then decide to get more involved in your life experiences (swimming) and be more of a participant in life rather than an observer. You are concerned about getting to your destination quickly, rather than enjoying the experience of life. There is a part of you that does not feel you have much to offer, yet other parts of yourself recognize you do have talents.

There is some inner communication you are receiving, and you have a concern about others seeing your true identity. You are identifying with yourself in a particular way that does not see much value in yourself.

I suggest you look at the goals and direction you are heading in life and see where you need to make a course correction. It is time to enjoy the journey and not be so concerned with the end result. You also have a theme of not valuing yourself and recognizing your talents that need to be changed in order for you to see your full potential.

Threading these on skewers after they’re cooked keeps the skewers clean for serving.

1/2 cup minced onions ¼ coconut milk

2 Tbsp. soy sauce

2 Tbsp. Thai red chili paste 1 Tbsp. brown sugar

2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice

2 Tbsp. peeled, minced fresh ginger root 1Tbsp. sesame oil

1 tsp. grated lime zest 1 tsp. Minced garlic

2 pound large, RAW, peeled and deveined shrimp - tailon (13-15 size, about 26-30 whole shrimp) 30 wood or bamboo skewers - about 10-inches long Ground paprika, garnish

½ cup minced scallions (white and green parts), garnish ½ cup chopped cilantro leaves

Make the marinade. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and whisk well. Add the shrimp, toss well, cover with plastic wrap and allow to marinate for an hour, or up to 8 hours.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Spray a large rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and arrange the shrimp without overlapping.

Cook the shrimp for about 6- to 8-minutes, or until just cooked through (DO NOT OVER COOK - they will continue to cook on the hot baking sheet even after you remove them from the oven).

Thread shrimp (one shrimp per skewer)by running the skewer through the body twice - so they look like the letter “C.” Serve sprinkled with paprika and sprinkled with scallions and cilantro. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Makes 12-15 servings.

Serve this with gourmet crackers or sliced French baguettes or use to stuff tiny baked potatoes or as a topping for bruschetta, toasted baguette rounds.

½ cup grated Gruyere or other Swiss cheese

8 slices cooked and chopped bacon

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

8 oz. (1 package) cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup sour cream

10 (1 package) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained ½ cup minced red or Bermuda onions

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 Tbsp. dried parsley flakes 1 tsp. minced garlic

2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice

Salt and Pepper to Taste

Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and stir well.

Transfer to an attractive baking dish and bake for 30-minutes. Serve with chunks of hearty bread or cut raw vegetables if desired.

You may also bake this in a hollowed bread bowl instead of a baking dish.

Makes 12-16 or more servings.

I love Ferrero Rocher Chocolates–they’re delicious and beautiful in their gold-foiled wrappers. Unwrap them and fold them into your favorite brownie recipe for festive fun. Or use my recipe below. For the ultimate hazelnut chocolate experience, drizzle with melted Nutella.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line the bottom of a 9-by13-inch baking dish or pan with parchment. Spray the parchment with nonstick cooking spray.

1 cup butter, melted (I use a microwave oven) 1 cup brown sugar ¾ cup white sugar 1 Tbsp. hazelnut liqueur 4 large eggs 1 cup flour 3/4 cup baking cocoa 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt ½ cup chopped hazelnuts 16 Chopped Ferrero Rocher chocolate candies (unwrapped), Chopped

In a large bowl, beat together the melted butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually add the flour mixture to butter mixture, mixing until smooth. Fold in hazelnuts and chopped chocolates.

Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl and whisk well. Set aside.

Spread in prepared baking pan. Bake 30-minutes (do not overbake). Cool and chill before cutting.

Run a knife around the rim of the pan and invert the pan onto a cutting board. With the brownies still upside down, use a sharp knife to cut into squares as large as you like. Turn the brownies over to serve. Makes a various number of brownies.

¼ cups fresh or frozen corn, thawed 1/2 tsp. chili powder or to taste Pinch dried oregano, crumbled

Hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco) to taste 1/4 cup chopped scallions, garnish

2 corn tortillas Olive oil for brushing Heat oil in a soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, broth, corn, chili powder, oregano and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool about 20 minutes.

While the soup is cooking, prepare the tortilla strips: Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. Brush 1 side of tortillas with oil and cut crosswise into thin strips.

Arrange strips on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until lightly toasted about 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Place half the cooled soup in the pitcher of a blender or bowl of a food processor and blend or process until smooth. Add the blended soup back to the pot and add the lemon juice, salt, pepper to taste. Just before serving, stir in the scallions. Serve the soup in “shot glasses” or with a “dot” of red pepper sauce and a couple of shredded tortillas in the soup. Makes 12 or more servings (depending on the size of the shot glasses).

Brie cheese comes in several sizes, ranging from about half-pound to about 2.2 pounds, approximately. Use any size brie you wish, but be sure to adjust the topping ingredients as necessary.

1 1-pound brie, chilled

1 cup pumpkin pie filling (canned is fine) 1 cup chopped pecans

½ cup dried cranberries (sweetened or unsweetened) 120 | Eydis Magazine

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Unwrap the brie and place in an attractive, rimmed baking dish just large enough to accommodate it (A quiche pan or pie dish work well). Use a fork to heavily “scratch” the top rind (this white top) of the brie (leave the edge and bottom of the brie untouched). This will help the toppings melt into the cheese.

Top with pumpkin pie filling and sprinkle with pecans and dried cranberries. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 15-20 minutes more, until the brie is melted. Serve with sliced French baguette rounds. Makes 8 servings.

Serve these little round cheesy crackers on their own or with toppings of your choice.

4 ounces shredded Gruyere cheese 5 Tbsp. butter, cut into pieces 2 Tbsp. sesame seeds 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup flour

1 tsp. baking powder 3 Tbsp. water

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line two baking sheets with parchment or spray well with nonstick cooking spray. Combine all ingredients except water in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until combined.

Add the water and pulse until a soft dough is formed. Form into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap.

Chill for 1 hour.

Cut the dough into 2 pieces. Roll one piece on a floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut the dough into 1-inch rounds.

Transfer the rounds to the prepared baking sheet and bake until lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Makes 60 crisps.
