Trade Secrets Resource Guide Welcome to TRADE SECRETS 2018! We are incredibly excited to welcome you to our 18th annual Trade Secrets fundraising event! What began as a small event in my backyard has grown into one of New England’s finest horticultural outings, attracting attendees from across the country, and around the world. This much-anticipated event—months in preparation—is the major fundraiser for Women’s Support Services (WSS). Covering the northwest corner of Connecticut and surrounding communities in New York and Massachusetts, WSS provides crisis intervention and preventive education, as well as legal, medical, housing and other assistance to fulfill its mission of creating a community free of domestic violence and abuse. The TRADE SECRETS RESOURCE GUIDE has become a muchappreciated source of information for our attendees. It contains useful information on the area’s premier landscape professionals, home designers, home and garden destinations, lodging, dining, and more. We hope you will enjoy it, and find it a useful guide to the area’s best businesses. We want to thank all those who advertise in the TRADE SECRETS RESOURCE GUIDE. Their dollars, along with the contributions of many generous individuals and organizations, enable Women’s Support Services to fulfill its mission. We also want to recognize the many, many hours given by devoted WSS volunteers. Without their dedication and hard work, TRADE SECRETS would not have become such an outstanding event. This beautiful event for a wonderful cause would not be possible without YOU, our generous event attendees. Thank you, thank you for your enthusiasm and support. Enjoy this weekend, and know that you have made a difference in the lives of the many families and individuals in crisis who rely on Women’s Support Services to help them on the path toward a healthy, safe future. With much appreciation,

Bunny Williams Founder and Honorary Chair

“There are a few events that go on my calendar each year that I consider sacrosanct: my family’s birthdays, my summer vacation in Maine, my Christmas party, my Easter egg hunt and Trade Secrets.” – Martha Stewart

Did You Know that Trade Secrets Supports Victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse? Intimate partner violence, also referred to as domestic violence, is a serious, preventable public health problem. In the United States: • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime • 1 in 10 women and 1 in 43 men have been stalked by an intimate partner • Nearly 20% of children are exposed to intimate partner violence in their lifetime • Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children ` • Women in an abusive relationship are 5 times more likely to be killed if their abuser has access to a firearm Women’s Support Services, Inc. (WSS) is a non-profit domestic violence agency serving Northwest Connecticut and the surrounding communities in New York and Massachusetts. WSS serves anyone—women, men, children— who come to us. Our services are confidential and free of charge. The mission of WSS is to: • Create a community free of domestic violence and abuse through intervention, prevention and education • Increase public awareness and understanding of domestic violence and abuse • Work toward social change that empowers both men and women • Engage all members of the community in our efforts to end violence and abuse Thanks to our generous supporters—you!—WSS is able to provide a range of services, including: • A 24-hour confidential hotline • Legal advocacy • Short-term emergency shelter • Individual counseling and safety planning • Support groups

In Connecticut, there are 18 domestic violence member agencies in the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV). The following statistics only represent those victims who sought services at our member agencies and do not represent the total number of domestic violence victims in Connecticut. • More than 38,404 victims were provided support and counseling services —an increase of nearly 10% from the previous year • Over 32,774 victims were provided court-based advocacy—a 13% increase from 2016 • 1,207 adults and 972 children were provided emergency shelter when they had no other safe housing options; domestic violence shelters operated at 122% capacity throughout the year

Through their fidelity, support, and generosity, our many dedicated Underwriters make Trade Secrets viable. In this section, we honor just a few of these remarkable men and women, and introduce them to you. Our thanks go to Anne Day, Jonathan Doster, and John Gruen for their fine photographic portraits.

John Rosselli & Bunny Williams Trade Secrets began as an idea to bring great plantsmen together with dealers specializing in objects for the garden. Year after year, they have come together to create a magical show. Our continued involvement and support come from the amazing work that WSS does to combat and deal with domestic violence. It is an amazing organization that works tirelessly with many volunteers to produce this well run and beautiful show. 9

Tom Quinn & Maria Horn Tom and I have been committed to WSS for as long as we’ve lived in the area. Bringing attention to the scourge of domestic violence and working to end it are causes I first worked on in my legal career, and we have been very proud to support the wonderful work of WSS in our rural community, where it is one of the few organizations that provides free counseling and services to all who need them. I attended my first Trade Secrets after joining the Board of Directors of WSS and was awestruck by the wave of volunteers committed to creating such a beautiful event for such a great cause. It’s been a privilege to be associated with both WSS and Trade Secrets and all the people who bring them both into being.

Marika Lindholm & Heidi Kronenberg Women’s Support Services (WSS) is a literal lifeline for families terrorized by domestic violence. The life-changing outreach and support WSS provides is poignant and powerful. As the founder and director of ESME.com (Empowering Solo Moms Everywhere), a website dedicated to weaving a web of support for single moms, we know well the scourge of domestic violence across the nation. At ESME, we feature more than 5,000 non-profits that assist single moms, and WSS stands out as a small, shining star advocating for families trapped in a cycle of abuse. ESME serves millions of moms and understands what can happen to a family under threat. Our confidential chat rooms and Facebook groups, especially those focusing on domestic violence, reveal painful realities that no woman or child should have to endure; however, we also hear from women who’ve survived, and made their way to self-sufficiency and safety. ESME’s modest contribution is in deep appreciation for everyone involved with WSS whose work saves lives and transforms families in neighborhoods close by. We are proud to be community partners in the fight to reduce domestic violence and its tragic effect on too many American families. Bravo to WSS and to the organizers of this wonderful event, Trade Secrets!

Many years ago, we were introduced to Trade Secrets by our dear friend, Adelaide Harris. Adelaide’s passion and commitment were infectious. We soon became Trade Secrets underwriters, and have been ever since. In this current environment, the services provided by Women’s Support Services are more vital than ever before. We are proud to have supported this organization that is so integral to our community.

Scott & Roxanne Bok Scott and I have always been excited to support the exceptional work of Trade Secrets and Women’s Support Services. Women and gardens together have a long history of growth and healing and that this event is such fun and so successful makes it the very best of its kind. We are inspired especially, by the volunteers—our many neighbors who dedicate with such joy, their time, wares, expertise, and the glorious venue. Thank you, Trade Secrets and Women’s Support Services. May you continue the beauty for many more years.

There is Another Sky There is another sky, Ever serene and fair, And there is another sunshine, Though it be darkness there; Never mind faded forests, Austin, Never mind silent fields— Here is a little forest, Whose leaf is ever green; Here is a brighter garden, Where not a frost has been; In its unfading flowers I hear the bright bee hum: Prithee, my brother, Into my garden come! —Emily Dickinson 21

Matthew Patrick Smyth Supporting Trade Secrets is rewarding to me on many levels. Firstly, it is the event I look forward to the most each year. It is wonderfully organized and presented, not to mention a great kick-off to the spring! Secondly, and more importantly, it’s for a cause that rings true to me. I have several very close women friends and relatives in my life who, over the years, have been the victims of emotional and physical abuse. Almost everyone is, whether she or he knows it or not. Knowing that the monies raised will help women and their children in need of protection makes this event even more special and so very important. 25

Ileene Smith & Howard Sobel Howard and I have supported Trade Secrets over the years because Women’s Support Services is such a crucial organization for our community. As I’ve learned in my work as a trustee of Austen Riggs in Stockbridge, anything that supports the mental health of individuals and families has rippling implications for the well-being of our towns.

Douglas Thomas Supporting the work of Women’s Support Services is an opportunity to make an important difference in the lives of many men, women, and children in our community who might not otherwise have a resource for the help that they desperately need. The quiet mission of this organization provides free, confidential, and always-available guidance. Through the efforts of many volunteers, Trade Secrets has become a highly visible and successful event that gives public recognition to the work of WSS. Their energy, enthusiasm, and dedication have made Trade Secrets an annual destination throughout the Northeast, eagerly attended by visitors who come for the plants, antiques, and beauty of the scene every May. All of us who contribute in many different ways know that in doing so we are helping to raise an awareness and understanding of the serious need for a resource that aims to create patterns of social change that will free those who have need of immediate counseling and guidance. Since Trade Secrets began eighteen years ago, I have considered it a privilege to support and recognize the importance of this valuable organization in our community.

Trade Secrets Garden Tour ~ Sunday, May 20, 2018 Tickets for the Garden Tour on Sunday, May 20, 2018 may be purchased online in advance (TradeSecretsCT.com) or during the Rare Plant & Garden Antiques Sale on May 19; tickets are limited. WETHERSFIELD GARDENS “The inspiration is grand, the tradition noble, and the vision all-seeing; yet, with all, no detail has been neglected... Wethersfield Garden is the offspring of wise, patient and loving solicitude of a master.” These words by the noted architecture historian, Henry Hope Reed, describe both the grandeur and simplicity that is Wethersfield. Thought by some to be the finest classical garden in the U.S. built in the second half of the 20th century, Wethersfield is the creative child of the late owner Chauncey Devereux Stillman along with the landscape architects Bryan J. Lynch [1907-1986], and Evelyn Poehler [1914-1999]. A fine example of a classical garden, in scale, theme and concept, Wethersfield is set around the estate of Chauncey Stillman upon the highest point northeast of Millbrook, NY, giving the gardens the advantage of outstanding views. The gardens as we see them today were started initially in the 1940s when Lynch and Stillman himself created the Inner Garden. This differs in style from the rest of the gardens as it is in the style of a 19th-century English garden with its Lutyens-inspired rill and Grasshopper House. The Formal Gardens beyond and the Wilderness Garden were created over a 25-year period, beginning in 1947 when Stillman hired Evelyn N. Poehler, a collaboration that resulted in these classically styled formal gardens which “draw visitors through room-like enclosures and along green corridors to secret recesses and elevated lookouts.” Beyond this enclosed formality lies the Wilderness Garden, with a three-quarter of a mile woodland trail interspersed with sculptures by Peter Watts and Jozef Stachura. The gardens have changed and aged since conception, but thanks to the good planning of Poehler and the dedication of Wethersfield’s gardeners, it remains a destination not to be missed. THE GARDEN AT MIDDLEFIELD The garden at Middlefield may be said to be rooted in Classical Greek Revival architecture as is the house, designed by the owner, architect Gil Schafer. However, the gardens are an exploration of both traditional and modern design ideas. Using the language of contemporary landscape design, Middlefield is a pared, honed, and polished version of a classical garden. Set on 45 acres of mainly wooded hillside, the Middlefield of the name is the 6 acres of an old farm field that is the location of drive, entrance courtyard, house, barn, and surrounding gardens. 68

Trade Secrets Garden Tour ~ Sunday, May 20, 2018 Created in collaboration with landscape designer Deborah Nevins and started in 1999, it was the first of many subsequent co-creations. Nevins and Schafer set out to create territorial context around the house, using hedges, stone walls and small tailored lawns to make garden rooms. These align with the interior axis of the house, knitting the two harmoniously together. Utilizing architectural details of arbors and lattices, as well as reclaimed fieldstone in the walls, the gardens have an intuitive sense of age. The hedges echo the strict classical language of the house though in their more contemporary vocabulary, and bring an abstract sculptural linearity that interacts with the rolling landscape of fields and wooded hills in interesting and unexpected ways. This sculptural feeling is underscored by the simple palette of garden elements used, clipped hedges—box, yew and hornbeam—stone walls, gravel courtyard, simple terra-cotta pots of repeated design dotted about, as well as a restrained color palette of the floral elements. On the west side of the house, facing the 12-foot-high clipped hornbeam room and sometime croquet lawn, is the screen porch, inspired by the one at Bunny Williams and John Rosselli’s house in Falls Village—also on the garden tour. THE GARDENS OF BUNNY WILLIAMS AND JOHN ROSSELLI This varied and eclectic garden of interior designer Bunny Williams and her husband, antique dealer John Rosselli, has grown in range and diversity for over thirty years, all the while unifying under its classical symmetry and room-like enclosures. Set in the 15 acres that surround their pristine Federal Colonial clapboard house of the 1840s, it sits just on the edge of the delightful, unspoiled hamlet of Falls Village. As Williams says, “Great design, wonderful plant material, and delightful ornaments: A garden becomes a work of art when these three elements are at play.” The pair have designed, tweaked, experimented, and taught themselves through their additions and expansions of the gardens, learning by trial and error, and giving it a go. Aside from the perennial structural elements of the gardens, the waves of Taxus hedges, boxwood parterres and hornbeam walls, most of the colorful annuals of the gardens start in the greenhouse. Another place of incubation and inspiration is the vegetable and cutting beds of the Kitchen Garden, flowers in colors for the house and vegetables for their table. There is so much to see here: an aviary of fancy chickens, the dovecote of fantailed doves, a sunken garden with koi pond, century-old topiaries, meandering woodland paths, and a classical temple of a pool house inspired by an 18th-century folly. Trade Secrets has been lucky to have this garden on the tour every year and every year there is more to surprise and delight. 69
