rowing pains are something we all go through at different stages in our lives and businesses – growing is a process which never stops. I thought that after three years of publishing Women in Trade I would not face certain situations anymore, but I was wrong. Lessons learned have a way of coming back to us at a later date and revealing how much we have grown, or how much we have not. One woman who understands the importance of the planting of a seed and growing in her trade with grace and class is our cover star, Gabrielle Blackman. She says, “I grew up in a mad, busy house that my mum ran as a B&B. We were always re-setting rooms and moving things around… I suppose, looking back, that planted a seed in me.” Over time her career has gone from strength to strength; she has created beautiful and practical homes for anyone and everyone, from multimillionaires to the incredibly deserving families, often with very specific requirements, featured on BBC One’s DIY SOS series. Read more on page 42. Also in this edition, on page 16 you will learn how to cope with growing pains, whether in your personal life or business, and on page 16 you will learn that things which may seem dead could actually be thriving. If you’re feeling like it might be time to give it all up and throw in the towel, I would recommend reading our tips for not giving up on yourself or your dream on page 58 – you may change your mind. Have you ever thought about gigging? The gig economy could be the answer for women who are now seeking a flexible career aimed at a new generation of workers wanting to take control of their careers. Read more about this growing phenomenon, based on freelance work or short-term contracts, on page 36. Ever wondered how a new Tube Line gets up and running? Turns out, it takes a whole lot of design, procurement, testing, and at least one girl in an orange Hi Vis vest. Read Camilla Barrow’s fascinating engineering story in ‘The Girl in the Orange Hi Vis’ on page 50. You spoke and we listened! Our brand new trade’s directory, focused on women’s goods and services, is situated at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a woman to tailor your clothes, a virtual assistant, a milliner, a personal stylist, a cheese and soap maker, or even a chimney sweep, then look no further! Enjoy the unfolding delights of spring! I look forward to putting my heavy boots in storage! Roll on, summer!
