Welcome to school year.

new

WOEA has planned a year with many opportunities for you and the members of your local to find your place in solving the puzzles facing public education. We each have a piece of the puzzle as we each have our own unique gifts. The WOEA Board of Directors hopes we can help you discover your piece of the puzzle in the coming year. The WOEA Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of every month during the school year. To bring your issues to our attention, please contact your WOEA Area Representative. These Area Reps look forward to seeing you at Uniserv Council meetings and will gladly attend your local’s Executive Committee meetings if you invite them. WOEA has five Core Function Committees which have planned opportunities for you and members of your locals to grow as leaders in your association, professionals in our fields, and as advocates for the learners we serve. We hope that you will discover that a piece of the puzzle is for you to attend a workshop or perhaps even to

join the hardworking members of these committees to help plan additional professional development opportunities. As we work together, I hope you will join us in WOEA as we work to find each member’s place in solving the puzzle. Yours in support of public education,

OEA Fund for Children and Public Education Screenings in WOEA—May and June 2010 As we prepare for Campaign 2010, WOEA members worked to screen candidates for the Ohio House and Senate in order to share the word about which candidates are strong supporters of our Education Association, our profession, and our students. The WOEA Fund for Children and Public Education District Screening Committee (WOEA FCPE DSC) invited every local president in WOEA to participate and/or send his/her designee to participate in these screenings. On May 14, 2010 in St. Mary’s at the Country Hearth Hotel, the WOEA FCPE DSC met and screened a candidate for House District (HD) 4. The WOEA FCPE DSC was also prepared to screen for HDs 77 and 78 and SD 12. Neither the incumbents nor the candidates chose to participate in the screenings after repeated letters and phone calls inviting the candidates to participate. As a result of these screenings the following endorsements were made because of the candidates’ support of OEA positions:

Martin who is running unopposed for Senate District 70, but he did not respond to repeated letters and phone calls inviting him to participate. As a result, no endorsement could be made. On June 16 and 17, 2010, in the Troy Uniserv Office, WOEA FCPE DSC met and screened for SD 5 Bill Beagle and Senator Fred Strahorn; for HD 39 House Representative Clayton Luckie and; for HD 40 House Representative Roland Winburn.
